Virgin Mary Appears in Chunk of Ice

While ice has caused countless accidents in cities from Dallas to New York this week, it may have also brought a miracle.

Jennifer Bloomer, an employee of Simply Self Storage in Dearborn Heights, Mich., claims to have seen an image of the Virgin Mary in a chunk of ice outside of the office.

"I came into work this morning and someone came in and said, 'You have to come outside and see something,' " she told CBS News. "I came outside and there was just this little ice statue. It was bizarre. He said, 'What do you think this is? I said it's the Virgin Mary.'"
The likeness formed from a dripping faucet.

"It was crazy," Bloomer said. "We were both like, I can't believe we're seeing this right now. It was really cool."

The ice chunk is being preserved in a freezer on the property.

This isn't the first time icy conditions have evoked images of the Virgin Mary.

Two years ago in February she reportedly appeared outside a mobile home in Plymouth, Ind. The ice formation was discovered at the base of the hitch, frozen to the structure. It gave the appearance of the Virgin Mary with her head bowed and her hands at her chest, clasped in prayer.

The surprised homeowner was soon joined by large crowds gathering to view the immaculate icicle. Visitors left candles and flowers at the site. Some even hung rosary beads around her.

In January 2007, a Morton, Texas, grocery store reported a Virgin Mary ice formation inside its freezer. An employee noticed that water dripping from the ceiling had created the image, and soon believers flocked to the freezer to see it for themselves.

Some of them cried in its presence. One woman even claimed it answered her prayers. "I had a lump in my breast and yesterday when I went home it disappeared," she told reporters. "I don't have it no more."
Like the Plymouth formation, candles and flowers were placed around this sighting.

Another recent sighting had nothing to do with ice but did manage to find its way into a refrigerator. Two months ago a California woman said her candle wax had melted in the shape of Mary kneeling and praying. In order to prevent melting and preserve the likeness, she placed it in the fridge.

Of course, the mother of all Mother of Jesus sightings remains the well-publicized Virgin Mary grilled cheese sandwich. In 2004, the holy lunch, featuring an image of her face, fetched $28,000 on eBay. The winning bid was placed by online casino GoldenPalace.com.
