It was Dietrich's Great-Great-Grandson Johann Michael Bassermann who
came to America on the ship Hampshire, landing at Philadelphia on
7 September 1748. According to German custom this immigrant
ancestor always went by Michael Basserman, never Johann Michael Bassermann.
It was in America that Michael met Christina Dierdorff,
a daughter of Johannes and Margaret (Earheart) Dierdorff. Michael
and Christina were married about the year 1755 in York County Pa and that
is where they lived out the remainder of their lives. Their
farm and old stone home was on a
piece of land known as "Point Petry" in Reading Township of York
County. Due to land boundaries changes in January
1800 the location of their homestead is now in Reading Township of
Adams County Pa. Looking on today's roadmap the nearest
town is East Berlin PA. Michael and Christina's
graves may be seen in the graveyard beside
Mummert's Church Of The Brethren Meetinghouse
near East Berlin Pa.
Michael and Christina (Dierdorff) Bassermann had twelve children, six
boys and six girls. Nine of these, perhaps ten, lived
to marry and have children of their own. The children's names and
spouses are shown below.

This is the Stone House in which Michael and Christine (Dierdorff) Bassermann lived and raised their children . It's location is in Reading Township of Adams County Pennsylvania. At the time the house was built (during the mid-1700s) the property was in York County Pa. Due to boundary changes of the counties, the property is now in Adams County. During January 1800 Adams County was formed from a part of York County. Photo taken in 1980.

There are many graves here for descendants of the Bosserman Family, including the graves of Johann Michael Bassermann and his wife Christina (Dierdorff) Bassermann. This Meeting house and cemetery are a part of The Upper Conewage District, Church Of The Brethren. Michael and Christina were members of this congregation. It's location is not far south of the town of East Berlin, Adams County, Pa. Photo taken in July 1976.

gravestone of Christina Dierdorff Bassermann in the graveyard beside The
Mummert's Church Of The Brethren Meetinghouse. She died
in April 1774 and is buried beside her husband Michael Basserman. Both
Christina and Michael were first buried on their farm, then circa 1910
moved to the meetinghouse yard. Christina's gravestone is of
the same type as her husband's and two of their
children, Hannah and Peter. All of these stones
are amoung a cluster of Bosserman gravestones.
How Johan immagrated to America- the ship the Hampshire
Johann Michael Basserman:Michael Bassermann emigrated to America, likely traveling down the Main and Rhine Rivers to Rotterdam in Holland. There he boarded the ship, "Hampshire", and after a stop at Falmouth, England, where immigrants to the British colonies were required to sign the oath of allegiace to the British Crown, sailed to America, landing at Philadelphia 7 Sept. 1748. We have little knowledge of Michael's residence or movement until 1765 when we find him purchasing land in Reading Township, York Co. from the Pennsylvania Colonial Proprietor. In the purchase contract, he is required to pay interest back to 1758 from which we may presume that he has been living on the land at least since that latter date. On this piece of land, the couple lived out their lives, raised their family of 12 children. Both died and were buried on the farm. Some time after 1900 their graves were moved to the Old Mummerts Cemetery, the site of the Old Mummerts Meeting House, now Upper Conewago Church of the Brethren, between Berlin and Abbotstown, Adams Co., PA. Two of their chilren, Peter and Hannah, are buried next to them. Many other members of the Bosserman families were buried there also. They prospered as their wills would indicate. The farm was known as "Point Petra". Likely from some stony feature thereon. After Christiana's death, it was sold to son John for 1270 pounds. "The Brethren in Colonial America" by Donald F. Durnbaugh includes the mention of Michael as active in the Church of the Brethren. Both Michael and Christiana signed their wills Basserman, but all their children spelled the name as we do today. father 1639-1671 johann weygel bassermann,

BOSSERMAN FAMILY ROOTS
Starting in the year 1615 with the birth of
Dietrich Bassermann
Joseph H. Bosserman
1930-2010
It was Dietrich's Great-Great-Grandson Johann Michael Bassermann who
came to America on the ship Hampshire, landing at Philadelphia on
7 September 1748. According to German custom this immigrant
ancestor always went by Michael Basserman, never Johann Michael Bassermann.
Michael Bassermann was born on 19 Dec 1726 in Dornigheim Germany,
one of the eight children born to Johann Daniel and Appolonia Bassermann.
He was their second born child and oldest son. When
Michael was a young man of twenty-two he left his native home land
and sailed for America on the ship Hampshire. Three ships
(Hampshire, Judith, and Two-Brothers) sailed together and their crossing
took 31 days.
Michael died during November 1793 and Christina during April 1794. They
were first buried on their farm and later (circa 1910) moved to the churchyard
beside The Mummert's Church Of The Brethren Meetinghouse. To

Photo of The Mummerts Meeting House in Hamilton Township of Adams County Pa. The cemetery can be seen off to the left of the photo.
This
photo shows some of the graves in the yard beside The Mummert's
of The Brethren Meeting House.
About one fourth of the cemetery's graves are shown here. In
the center of the photo there are two long strips of stones set in
rows of cement. In these two rows are the fourteen
graves that were moved from the old Bosserman Family Farm circa 1910. In
the back row, the sixth stone from your left is
Michael's. And
his wife Christina's is the seventh from your
left. This photo was taken on 12 August 1976 by Joe Bosserman
of Covington, Miami Co., Ohio.
This
This
is a close up photo of Johann Michael Bassermann's gravestone. It
is engraved with fancy German lettering. The stone itself is carved from
a slab of slate. This photo of the stone makes it look larger than
it is. It is around three feet in height and about two inches thick.
Even
though there are no dates on the stone we know from other sources that
Michael was born in Germany on 19 December 1726 and died during November
1793. He had came to America during 1748. Also see the photo of his wife
Christina's gravestone and a photo of the cluster
of Bosserman gravestones that Michael's stone
is in.

Notes for Johann Michael Basserman:
Michael Bassermann emigrated to America, likely traveling down the Main and Rhine Rivers to Rotterdam in Holland. "The Brethren in Colonial America" by Donald F. Durnbaugh includes the mention of Michael as active in the Church of the Brethren.
Both Michael and Christiana signed their wills Basserman, but all their children spelled the name as we do today. To this day the name is Bassermann as used in Germany. While Bosserman is most prevalent in America, it has been seen ina umber of forms including Boserman, Bosorman, Bosseman, Bauserman, and perhaps even Passirman. The variations may partially be the result of non-Enlish speaking family members having their legal papers drawn by officials who wrote the name as it sounded to them.
The John Penn who signed Michael's land contract was a granson of William Penn, but not the same John Penn who signed the Declaration of Independence.
Buried in Hamilton Twp., Adams Co., PA
