UN Seeking to Control the Internet

A UN agency is planning to propose regulations on the internet at a meeting in Dubai, which could “censor free speech, levy tariffs on e-commerce, and even force companies to clean up their ‘e-waste’…”

Concerns about the meeting, run by the International Telecommunications Union (ITC), led the U.S. State Department to file a series of new proposals to ensure “competition and commercial agreements – and not regulation.” The United States is against sanctions and believes management of the internet by one central organization goes against free speech.

There is a decent chance however, that some of the ITC’s proposed regulations will go into effect. Telecommunications businesses are taking it seriously. After all, they have a vested interest in the outcome.

The ITU tried to reassure those with concerns that they are not trying to take control of the Internet. But “key experts remain concerned.” The conference in Dubai is meant to exert some sort of controls.

But that is only the beginning. There are plans to bring stronger proposals at a similar conference in 2015. The goal right now is to restructure so that the telecommunication companies in each country have more control over what is on the Internet.

“The open, multi-stakeholder approach that has led to the massive growth of the Internet over the last 15 years [would] be replaced with a system of top-down, international regulation,” said one expert. Another expert said, “what were formerly considered rough guidelines will become more precise governances…”

If the ITU cannot get regulation of the Internet, it will become irrelevant. That is the nature of global institutions. They have to have a reason for their existence. Control is that reason.

Freedom of speech is going to fade. Eventually everything will be so organized that those proclaiming God’s last message will not be able to use the modern conveniences like the Internet to do so.

Every day Satan has his plans to carry out—certain lines that will hedge up the way of those who are witnesses for Jesus Christ. EV 101

The message of warning must be carried to every nation upon the globe. The work should move forward with alacrity. Satan is already astir to hedge up the way. We must be wise or he will prevail. What we do must be executed with greater promptness. Manuscript Releases, Vol. 8, page 215. (Letter To S. N. Haskell, October 12, 1875.)

One month until they regulate the Internet
