Bronislawa Jarosz, 83, was sentenced to 18 years in jail for killing her neighbour in 2007. The Polish-born pensioner stole jewellery and four bottles of wine after beating Austrian Maria P., 78, to death in Korneuburg near Lower Austria.
After only 10 months behind bars, the convict was controversially allowed to spend her sentence under house arrest. A doctor had decided she was not healthy enough to spend any more time in prison.
The physician's verdict was overturned recently by another expert, but when police officers came to take the woman back to jail, they were told by her daughter that she had gone on a pilgrimage to the Vatican. Austrian police then decided to issue an international arrest warrant on her.
Jarosz was arrested in Krakow yesterday (Mon). It is unclear when the woman, who told policemen in the Polish city she was suffering from ventricular fibrillation, will be extradited to Austria.
