Africa's Rapid Urbanization · December 15, 2010

Over a third of Africa’s 1 billion inhabitants currently live in urban areas,” wrote the Economist, “but by 2030 that proportion will have risen to a half.”

UN-HABITAT, a United Nations agency reported, that “the population of some cities is set to swell by up to 85% in the next 15 years.”

Cairo, Lagos and Kinshasa will each have between 13 and 16 million people. Of the current populations of these cities some 70% live in slums. Food and water shortages are also predicted.

The rapid urbanization is prophetic. The Bible shows us this in Genesis. When Nimrod tried to establish a world government under a monarchy established in Babel, he build huge cities. His protégés also followed his example and built more cities like Nineveh, Sodom, Gomorrah and Gaza. See Genesis 10.

“…These Babel builders determined to keep their community united in one body, and to found a monarchy that should eventually embrace the whole earth. Thus their city would become the metropolis of a universal empire; its glory would command the admiration and homage of the world and render the founders illustrious. The magnificent tower, reaching to the heavens, was intended to stand as a monument of the power and wisdom of its builders, perpetuating their fame to the latest generations.” Patriarchs and Prophets, page 118.

Nimrod’s attempt at globalization failed, but it was not without consequences for the wicked descendants of Ham. Today, globalization is being attempted again. It too will fail. But like in the days of the generations after the flood, the urbanization into huge megacities will make the inhabitants of the world vulnerable to massive problems, such as disasters, strife, corruption and greed which will create shortages of basic necessities, crime, chaos, disease and other unimaginable problems.
