Study: Frogs affected by progestogen

Spring peeper frog

UPPSALA, Sweden, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A pharmaceutical progestogen released into the environment can lead to sterility in frogs, Swedish researchers at Uppsala University reported Wednesday.

The study, published in the scientific journal Aquatic Toxicology, indicated female tadpoles swimming in water containing the progestogen levonorgestrel are subject to abnormal ovarian and oviduct development, resulting in adult sterility, the university said in a release.

Many medicines consumed by people are released into the environment through sewage systems and different kinds of progestogens -- hormonal preparations usually prescribed for contraceptives, cancer treatment and to ease menopausal discomfort in women -- have been identified in waterways in a number of countries.

Uppsala University associate professor Cecilia Berg and doctoral student Moa Kvarnryd in the Department of Environmental Toxicology showed that levonorgestrel can cause sterility in female frogs at concentrations not much higher than those normally measured in the environment. The research group is part of MistraPharma, one of the largest global research networks focusing on pharmaceuticals and the environment.

Female tadpoles in water containing low concentrations of levonorgestrel showed a greater proportion of immature ovarian egg cells and lacked oviducts, entailing sterility, the university said. The frog's reproductive organs begin developing in the tadpole stage.

The findings show the importance of studying how pharmaceuticals affect animals in the environment, researchers said.

"The findings represent important initial evidence that an environmental progestogen can adversely affect frogs," Berg said. "Our findings show that pharmaceuticals other than estrogen can cause permanent damage to aquatic animals exposed during early life stages."

Chinese Demand For Gold “Explosive” We Want Our Gold, We Need It Now! Like J.G. Wentworth

Zero Hedge

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

According to an executive of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the world’s largest bank by market value, demand in China for physical gold and gold-related investments is growing at an “explosive” pace and its appetite for the yellow metal is poised to remain robust amid inflation concerns, reports Reuters. In other words, what was previously repeatedly reported on Zero Hedge, and by the World Gold Council, is starting to be appreciated by everyone else. Yet in a market in which supply and demand are completely disconnected from price discovery thanks to global central planning, and courtesy of precious metal price suppression by JPM, China investors are able to accumulate gold and other non-dilutable metals at prices that no longer reflect surging global demand. And just like in the US, China is also starting to fall for physical substitute investments: “There is also frantic demand for non-physical gold investments. We issued 1 billion yuan worth of gold-price-linked term deposits in 2010, but we managed to sell the same amount over just a few days in January this year,” Zhou said, adding that such deposits would easily exceed 5 billion yuan ($759 million) this year.” Although in China, unlike in London, these deposits may actually have real coverage behind them.

From Reuters:

ICBC, the world’s largest bank by market value, sold about 7 tonnes of physical gold in January this year, nearly half the 15 tonnes of bullion sold in the whole of 2010, said Zhou Ming, deputy head of the bank’s precious metals department on Wednesday.

We are seeing explosive demand for gold. As Chinese get wealthy, they look to diversify their investments and gold stands out as a good hedge against inflation,” Zhou told Reuters.

Gold imports into China soared in 2010, turning the country, already the largest bullion miner, into a major overseas buyer for the first time.

The surge, which comes as Chinese investors look for insurance against rising inflation and currency appreciation, puts the country on track to overtake India as the world’s top gold consumer and a significant force in global gold prices.

Oh yes, silver too

Zhou said there was also voracious demand for silver, with the bank selling about 13 tonnes of physical silver in January alone, compared with 33 tonnes in the whole of 2010.

Not surprisingly, China is doing all it can to offload bubble frenzy to its billion plus consumers:

The bank on Tuesday launched its second physical gold investment product, which sells gold bars to investors, which can be resold for cash through ICBC based on real-time gold prices.

The WGC said ICBC’s introduction of this gold investment could lift China’s gold retail investment by 10 to 15 percent in 2011 from about 170 tonnes last year.

For those who think gold is already in a bubble… check back in 1 year.

Hosni Mubarak’s Death Could Come At Any Time: Arab News Report

Death By 1000 Papercuts

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Will Hosni Mubarak die before he writes his memoir? A memoir which might have contradicted George W. Bush’s memoir Decision Points and Bush’s claim, Mubarak informed Bush there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. WMD’s, the reason Americans and the world were given for launching the invasion of Iraq. Hosni Mubarak, Bush’s Iraq War ‘fall guy’.

According to the Arabic international daily Asharq Alawsat ‘Hosni Mubarak’s death could come at any time’.

Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat –After Egyptian Ambassador to the US Sameh Shoukry publicly acknowledged that former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is in bad health, a former security official affiliated to the Egyptian military high command told Asharq Al-Awsat that the announcement of Hosni Mubarak’s death could come at any time. The former security official said “what is certain is that his state of health is declining drastically, in addition [to this] there is information that he is refusing to receive the required medical treatment.”

‘The source also revealed that there had been attempts to convince Mubarak to travel abroad for medical treatment, most probably to German where he previously underwent treatment to remove a gallbladder last year. However the former security official clarified to Asharq Al-Awsat that “Mubarak is refusing this…in fact, he has asked those around him to allow him to die in his country, and I believe this is just a matter of time” adding “it is unfortunate that this is how it will end.”

Contrary to reports that Mubarak is working on a memoir, the former Egyptian official told Asharq Al-Awsat that “this is untrue…Mubarak’s health is not up to this, he is only regains consciousness rarely, spending most of his time in a comatose state.”

GlobalSecurity.org published a report on Bush’s memoir and Bush’s claim about the role Hosni Mubarak allegedly played in the invasion of Iraq.

Former U.S. President George W. Bush says Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak informed the U.S. that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. He also spoke of other people who had influence on his decision to invade Iraq.

The revelation comes in Bush’s memoirs, Decision Points, in which he highlighted mistakes made during the Iraq war campaign, and the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in the country.

“President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt had told [general] Tommy Franks that Iraq had biological weapons and was certain to use them on our troops,” Bush revealed in his newly-released book.

The former president said Mubarak “refused to make the allegation in public for fear of inciting the Arab street.”

Bush explained that the “intelligence from a Middle Eastern leader who knew [former Iraqi president] Saddam [Hussein] well had an impact on my thinking.”

“Just as there were risks to actions, there were risks to inaction as well,” he wrote in Decision Points.

About that Mubarak memoir, two weeks after George W. Bush’s memoir Decision Points hit the bookshelves on November 9th, a statement was released by Mubarak spokesman Suleiman Iwad, a statement in which Mubarak denied he told Bush Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

By November, 2010, Bush was a private citizen while Mubarak was still in power. Mubarak immediately denied Bush’s claim. One month later protests against Mubarak began in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

Dalai Lama nephew hit by car, killed on Fla. walk

PALM COAST, Fla.—The Dalai Lama's nephew was smiling, radiating energy as he tackled the first leg of a 300-mile walk to promote Tibet's independence from China. He insisted on finishing the last two miles on his own, even as darkness fell.

"For the cause," Jigme K. Norbu said, as he had on so many similar journeys before.

Norbu was alone on a dark coastal highway Monday when was struck and killed by an SUV. He was headed south in the same direction as traffic, following a white line along the side of the road, according to the Highway Patrol. The impact crumpled the vehicle's hood and shattered the front windshield.

Authorities said it appeared to be an accident and the driver, 31-year-old Keith R. O'Dell of Palm Coast, swerved but couldn't avoid Norbu. The Highway Patrol was still investigating, but didn't expect any charges. O'Dell and his 5-year-old son were not hurt.

Norbu, 45, had completed at least 21 walks and bike rides, logging more than 7,800 miles in the U.S. and overseas to support freedom for Tibet and highlight the suffering of its people. He completed his most recent 300-mile trek in December in Taiwan.

He lived in Bloomington, Ind., where his father had been a professor at Indiana University and he owned a restaurant that served Tibetan and Indian cuisine.

He had set out Monday with a group of friends, but insisted he would continue on his own after one of his companions tired and they decided to take a van to a restaurant. Norbu planned to meet them there.

About an hour before the accident, Norbu met a Florida couple, Gary and Damian Drum Collins, who had heard about his jaunt through town.

"He was smiling and happy. He had as much positive energy as you could imagine," Gary Collins told The Associated Press.

His wife took a picture with Norbu, who was wearing running shoes, a dark pullover and a white sandwich board-like sign that said, "Walk For Tibet Florida."

The couple was troubled by the fading sunlight and urged Norbu to stay at their place for the night. He was already behind schedule, they said, and agreed to change his plans.

"It was becoming dusk. We were worried and we were concerned he wasn't going to have daylight," Gary Collins said.

They suggested Norbu stay inside their condominium, about three miles from their Hammock Wine & Cheese Shoppe, but he wanted to spend the night under the stars.

So the Collinses made preparations for Norbu and his group to spend the night outside the cheese shop. They left a towel, bar of soap, three bottles of coconut juice, a can of stuffed grape leaves and crackers on a table outside. The back door was also unlocked so the travelers could

shower and use the restroom.

A note for the group read: "Hi! Please make yourselves at home. It is an honor to have you here."

Norbu was killed just a quarter of a mile from the shop. On Tuesday, a vase with seven roses marked the accident site on the side of the two-lane State Highway A1A, where the speed limit is 55 mph and there are no traffic lights.

A woman who identified herself as the mother of the SUV driver said her son didn't want to talk to the media.

"What more is there to say? He was wearing dark clothes. It was an unfortunate accident. He hasn't been charged. That's all we're going to say," said the woman, who would not give her name.

A dishwasher at a nearby restaurant was killed in September along the same stretch of road where Norbu died.

"It is such a sad thing," Damian Collins said. "I was honored to see him. I said, 'I'm sorry to stop you,' but he said he didn't mind because he wanted to raise awareness for his cause."

Norbu, the son of the Dalai Lama's late brother, Taktser Rinpoche, had done several other similar walks, including a 900-mile trek in 2009 from Indiana to New York.

After that four-week journey, his feet were full of painful blisters. He had lost nails and the feeling in one toe.

"But I feel energized, because the cause itself energizes me," Norbu told AP then, after emerging from New Jersey through the Lincoln Tunnel.

That walk marked the 50th anniversary of the failed Tibetan rebellion against Chinese rule that resulted in the exile of his uncle, who is Tibet's top spiritual leader.

Thupten Anyetsang, owner of Anyetsang's Little Tibet Restaurant in Bloomington, said he once joined Norbu's father on a 60-mile walk between Indianapolis and Bloomington to promote awareness of Tibet. He said the hazards posed by passing cars were evident.

"There can be dangers, especially when you're walking on the highway or rural roads," he said.

On the outskirts of Bloomington Tuesday night, about 40 friends and fellow Buddhists prayed for Norbu. They sat on maroon cushions aligned in rows on the floor of the ornately decorated shrine room of the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center that Norbu's father founded.

Center director Arjia Rinpoche led three other monks through a series of prayers in front of a framed photograph of Norbu lit by three burning candles. The prayers came amid the monks' rhythmic chanting and pealing of bells.

"He was so full of life, full of energy, and very, very dedicated to his father," said Mary Pattison, a Bloomington resident who was an assistant to Taktser Rinpoche, who was committed to the Tibetan cause.

"He (Norbu) grew up drinking that in," she said. "He was carrying forth, carrying the torch for his father."

Taktser Rinpoche was a high lama who was abbot of a monastery when the Chinese invaded. The brothers fled into exile following the 1959 uprising. Rinpoche, who died in September 2008 at 86, was a professor of Tibetan studies at Indiana University in Bloomington and the Dalai Lama's U.S. representative.

David Colman, whose son has an arts store near Norbu's restaurant, said he had shown some wild behavior during his youth but had come into his own in recent years and embraced the Tibetan political movement.

"He was maturing. Jigme was growing into being a full-fledged figurehead for Tibet," Colman said. "It's really tragic that this happened just as he was hitting his prime as the nephew of the Dalai Lama."

In northern India, officials at the Dalai Lama's office in Dharmsala could not immediately be reached and the Tibetan government-in-exile had not commented as of late Tuesday.

China claims Tibet as part of its territory, but many Tibetans say Chinese rule deprives them of religious freedom. Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama of pushing for Tibetan autonomy and fomenting anti-Chinese protests.

Norbu talked about his relationship with his uncle in an interview with the Chicago Tribune published in 1995.

"It's hard sometimes," Norbu told the newspaper. "I don't get next to him that often. I can't just hug him or anything like that. You don't do things like that. Sure I have an audience with him. Sure I see him. I respect him to the point where if I'm in India I don't go see him every day. He's got more important things to do. He's got 6 million Tibetans to worry about."

Number sickened after Playboy Mansion fundraiser rises to 200

By MOLLY HENNESSY-FISKE
Los Angeles Times
LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles County health officials said Tuesday that the number of people who have fallen ill after a four-day conference that culminated in a fundraiser at the Playboy Mansion has reached 200, and that investigators have focused on the Playboy event as they look for the cause of the sickness.

The possible outbreak of legionellosis, or Pontiac fever, affected people connected with the DOMAINfest Global Conference, "with symptoms mostly consisting of fever, chills, general discomfort (malaise) and some cough," according to a statement by the county Department of Public Health.

More than 700 people from 30 countries attended the conference held at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica Feb. 1-3.

"The department is currently focusing its investigation on the social event that occurred at the Playboy Mansion, Holmby Hills, on Feb. 3, 2011," the statement said, noting that, "Public Health has not yet determined that exposure is limited to a specific source from that event. There is no information suggesting that there is a risk of ongoing infection or that this outbreak extends beyond those individuals associated with this conference."

Many of those sickened after the conference have fully recovered, according to the statement, and they may not have suffered the same illness.

"We are considering several possible causes of illness for this suspected outbreak," said Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding, the county's public health director.

"Not everyone with reported symptoms is likely to have the same illness, because a number of respiratory infections with similar symptoms are circulating," Fielding said. "We are working diligently to identify the causes, which may include viruses, bacteria or irritants."

Teri Thomerson, a Playboy spokeswoman, released a statement Tuesday saying, "The Playboy Mansion continues to fully cooperate with the Department of Public Health in their investigation."

She did not respond to further e-mails or phone calls.

The department was notified last Friday of a "suspected respiratory infection outbreak" among those associated with the conference for technology professionals in the domain name industry.

The state Department of Public Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and surrounding county health departments have been providing assistance to county health officials.

Pontiac fever is not contagious, and most symptoms disappear in two to five days, according to the CDC. Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia that usually responds to antibiotics, although 5 percent to 30 percent of cases prove fatal, according to the CDC.

A statement the department sent to conference attendees Friday noted that some at the conference had developed pneumonia.

Nationally, Legionnaires' affects 8,000 to 18,000 people annually.

Mason Cole, a spokesman for DOMAINfest organizer Oversee.net, encouraged conference attendees to get tested.

"If you haven't been in touch with the L.A. County Department of Public Health and you were a guest at one of these events, you should get in touch, even if you're healthy," said Cole. "At this stage, we're just trying to help the doctors figure out what this is.

"There's so much speculation about what caused this, but we don't have any facts."

Police: Man's wife turns him in for downloading child porn

York, PA -
A wife called police and turned over evidence after she found child pornography her husband had downloaded onto the computer at their East Manchester Township home, police said.

Lambert Andrew Estrada, 40, of the 4100 block of Board Road, was charged Tuesday and is in York County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.

His wife, Cynthia Estrada, told Northeastern Regional Police that, when she got home from work on March 12, she went to use the family laptop and noticed that her husband had downloaded a video from a pornographic website using his external hard drive.

Searching the hard drive, she found a file titled "magic tricks" that contained folders that had female names and ages on them, including one that said "Tara 8 years old," according to charging documents.

She found other similar folders, all with photos of children younger than 18 - some as young as 6 - and pornographic videos involving children, police said.

Cynthia Estrada called her minister, who told her to call police. She then turned over the laptop and three hard drives to police, according to charging documents.

Police said they found 24 videos of apparent child pornography on the laptop and 65 videos on Lambert Estrada's hard drive.

Police said they believe Lambert Estrada was also disseminating the material, based on his use of a peer-to-peer file-sharing network.

The charges

Police charged Lambert Andrew Estrada with the following:

--- Sexual abuse of children -- dissemination of photographs, videotapes, computer depictions and films

--- Sexual abuse of children -- child pornography

--- Criminal use of a communication facility

Sheriff says York County inmate assaulted deputy

Miguel Angel Ascencio-Ayala scuffled with deputies when he refused to let them search his property.
By RICK LEE
Daily Record/Sunday News
ork, PA -
Miguel Angel Ascencio-Ayala did not make it to his hearing in court Tuesday.

When York County deputies told him they would have to search his property -- the court documents he had -- for contraband before transporting him from county prison to the Judicial Center, Ascencio-Ayala refused, Sheriff Rich Keuerleber said.

The 33-year-old started to raise his cane and fists at deputies, the sheriff said. One deputy was injured in the struggle that followed, taking Ascencio-Ayala to the floor.

"Needless to say," Keuerleber said, "he wasn't transported to court."

Keuerleber said his office will file charges in connection with the assault against Ascencio-Ayala before District Justice Barry Bloss.

Keuerleber said the injured deputy, whose name he declined to release, was treated for undisclosed injuries.

Ascencio-Ayala was scheduled Tuesday for a pre-trial conference on simple assault and harassment charges and false identification to law enforcement, and a parole violation hearing on charges of false ID and identity theft.

Those hearings have been moved to March 22.

Ruling Triggers Flurry of ZIP Code Suits

Kate Moser

Justice Carlos Moreno, California Supreme Court

Justice Carlos Moreno, California Supreme Court

SAN FRANCISCO — A San Francisco plaintiff firm filed six proposed class actions Monday seeking to penalize retailers for requesting ZIP codes from customers paying with a credit card, less than a week after the state Supreme Court ruled that practice is illegal.

Kassra Nassiri of Nassiri & Jung filed the suits — targeting Old Navy, Target Corp., Macy's Inc., Cost Plus Inc., Toys "R" Us Inc. and Trader Joe's Co. — on behalf of named plaintiff Heather Robertson.

California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno, writing for the unanimous court last week, said retailers violate a consumer protection statute when they ask card-using customers for ZIP codes. ZIP codes constitute personal identification information, the court held, and requesting and recording that data from cardholders violates The Song-Beverly Credit Card Act of 1971. When paired with the cardholder's name, the ZIP code allows retailers to find a home mailing address.

Another 10 class actions making similar claims were filed by a handful of other law firms in Los Angeles on Monday, said Michael Burns, a partner in Seyfarth Shaw's San Francisco office who's tracking the litigation and has handled a similar case in the past.

The San Francisco suits filed Monday contend that "if successful, this action will enforce an important right affecting the public interest and will confer a significant benefit, whether pecuniary or non-pecuniary, on a large class of persons."

Retailers can be forced to pay up to $1,000 for each violation of the act.

"The potential statutory damages could be what they call 'annihilating,'" Burns said.

Nassiri didn't respond to messages today. The high court's decision last week emphasized that the statute lists maximum penalties but that courts have discretion over how badly retailers get penalized.

Retailers are bracing for those penalties and for more class actions. After Monday's "banner day" for the ZIP-code litigation, Burns said, "I have a feeling there's a lot more coming."
