Those costly conventions. How
big was the tab for U.S. taxpayers for the two political conventions
that recently concluded? At least $136 million. That includes $18.2
million to help cover the costs of both the Republican and Democratic
national conventions, plus another $50 million spent on security at each
gathering. While this is a tiny fraction of overall Federal
expenditures (and deficits), does anyone want to suggest that it should
be the political parties themselves — not the taxpayers — who foot the
bills for these lavish affairs? More »
