A four day visit from the pope for a Roman Catholic youth festival, an event that draws thousands from around the world, looks to cost the Spanish government roughly 100 million euros according to critics, although officials won’t say exactly how much they’re shelling out.
During a time of severe austerity and cuts affecting the country’s poor and middle class, this visit has touched a nerve.
Tens of thousands were in the streets Wednesday night, to protest their tax dollars being used to host the leader of the Catholic church. The scene turned violent in short order, with police and angry youths clashing openly in the streets.
