York County board discusses having prisoners clean up litter

The prison has recently emphasized acclimating low-risk inmates to the community.
York, PA -
Members of the York County Prison Board are discussing a proposal to have inmates from York County Prison do regular litter pickup around the county.

Board chairman and county commissioner Doug Hoke said the topic came up at the board's meeting Tuesday. It's not a definite plan, but all of the board members -- which include all three county commissioners and prison warden Mary Sabol -- seemed amenable to the idea, Hoke said.

Hoke said the York County Sheriff's Office Criminal Response Unit has previously supervised groups of prisoners doing targeted clean-ups in problem areas, particularly where law enforcement is concerned that the general run-down condition might contribute to crime.

But on Tuesday, board members discussed an ongoing program that would take place all over the county.

"I think it's a good use of resources," Hoke said.

Commissioner Chris Reilly said such a program would include only low-risk prisoners who are cleared for work release.

He said it would fit in with a recent emphasis at the prison on acclimating low-risk prisoners to being part of the community again before their release.

President Commissioner Steve Chronister said the emphasis at first would probably be on York, and it could expand from there.

"A cleaner city, a cleaner county, certainly makes it a better place to live and a better place to work," Chronister said.
