ROCHESTER (NY)

Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester

March 27, 2011

An allegation of sexual abuse of a minor dating back to the late 1960s has been made against Rev. Vincent Panepinto and deemed credible after an investigation by the Diocese of Rochester.

Rev. Panepinto has been placed on administrative leave and his priestly faculties have been withdrawn. He can no longer exercise public ministry in any capacity.

Rev. Panepinto was ordained a priest on June 3, 1967. He served at the former St. Philip Neri parish in Rochester and St. Anthony’s in Elmira; St. Michael’s in Rochester; as a chaplain at several state correctional facilities and at Our Lady of Mercy High School; as spiritual director at Becket Hall discernment house; as pastor of the former City East parishes in Rochester (Corpus Christi, Holy Redeemer, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel); and most recently as sacramental minister of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini parish in Rochester.

HELP FOR VICTIMS: The Diocese of Rochester encourages victims of abuse to always report to the civil authorities. To report a case of possible sexual abuse and to receive help and guidance from the Diocese of Rochester, victims are encouraged to contact Barbara Pedeville, the victims’ assistance coordinator appointed by Bishop Matthew H. Clark: Phone 585-328-3228, ext. 1215 (toll-free 1-800-388- 7177, ext. 1215), or by e-mail to pedeville@dor.org

As the world mourns the loss of an American icon, newly released details from a 1997 interview with Elizabeth Taylor reveals a shocking secret about legendary film star James Dean that she allegedly kept for most of her life.

According to The Daily Beast, writer Kevin Sessums interviewed Taylor for a cover story for POZ, an American magazine dedicated to AIDS activism. It was then the actress reportedly let him in on a secret about Dean, a close friend of hers.

“I loved Jimmy. I’m going to tell you something, but it’s off the record until I die. OK? When Jimmy was 11 and his mother passed away, he began to be molested by his minister,” she revealed to Sessums, who was sworn to secrecy.

“I think that haunted him the rest of his life. In fact, I know it did,” she said of her friend. “We talked about it a lot. During ‘Giant’ we’d stay up nights and talk and talk, and that was one of the things he confessed to me.”

Six more members of a Black Earth church are expected to face child abuse charges in what experts say is a rare – and legally indefensible – case of claiming the Bible dictates using a rod to punish children as young as 2 months.

“I think these are deviant people, not deviant beliefs,” said law professor Michael Broyde, who is academic director of the Law and Religion Program and a project director at the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University in Atlanta.

“It’s an exceptionally rare view of the Bible that permits activity that would otherwise be considered abuse,” said Broyde, who is also a rabbi.

“As I understand the Biblical text,” he said, “there is no right in the Bible to commit child abuse.”

PHILADELPHIA (PA)

A funny thing happened in the aftermath of yet another clergy sex-abuse scandal embroiling the Archdiocese of Philadelphia: Nothing.

Area Catholics contend that they’re enraged by the revelations, but they have a strange way of showing it.

Some stay home. Others put less in the offering basket. Neither Voice of the Faithful nor the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) has gained critical heft to make Cardinal Justin Rigali and church lawyers tremble.

Philadelphia sports fans earned their rabid rep. But Catholics here remain passive, unwilling to challenge men who lie and betray.
