Bhutan has some of the toughest anti-smoking laws in the world, and police can now enter homes if they even smell tobacco. And last week, police arrested the first person under the new law: A Buddhist monk.
The monk was arrested with 72 packs of chewing tobacco, according to Reuters, which he bought across the border in India and smuggled back to Bhutan. The unnamed monk says he had no clue abut the new law, which could put him in jail for the next five years if convicted.
He can be charged with smuggling of controlled substances, which is a fourth degree felony," a police official from the Narcotic Drug and Law enforcement Unit of Bhutan, who did not want to be identified, told the Bhutan Today newspaper.
Damn, that's pretty harsh, no?
