Robbery suspect shot by York police officer, dies at hospital
STAFF REPORT -- The York Dispatch
A robbery suspect was shot by a York City police officer early Saturday morning and later died at York Hospital, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Victor Arvelo, 24, of York, was pronounced dead a York Hospital at 2:43 a.m., about 1 1/2 hours after the shooting, the York County Coroner's Office said.
The shooting followed a reported robbery in the area of the Waterway Bar & Grill in the 200 block of Philadelphia Street at about 1:15 a.m., York City Police said.
According to state police, Paulo Sanchez, 43, had parked his Kia SUV in the Waterway parking lot when he was approached by a man who demanded his car keys, which Sanchez turned over.
Sanchez ran to the Waterway and alerted employees to what had happened. The
employees saw the man trying to start Sanchez's car and ran toward him, at which point the robbery suspect fled, according to state police.
A York City police cruiser was patrolling the area and two officers chased the man, who was a few hundred yards from Waterway, state police said.
One officer caught the robbery suspect and tried to restrain him, but he resisted, state police said.
At that point, the man displayed a pistol and was shot by the officer, state police added.
Because the incident involves a York City police officer, state police are investigating.
An autopsy will be performed Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, according to the coroner's office.
