VATICAN CITY -- The Vatican praised President Barack Obama's proposals for curbing gun violence, saying they are a "step in a right direction."
The Vatican's chief spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Saturday that 47 religious leaders have appealed to members of the U.S. Congress "to limit firearms that are making society pay an unacceptable price in terms of massacres and senseless deaths."
"I am with them," Lombardi said, in an editorial carried on Vatican Radio, lining up the Vatican's moral support in favor of firearm limits.
`'The initiatives announced by the American administration for limiting and controlling the spread and use of weapons are certainly a step in the right direction," Lombardi said.
Obama is trying to rally support for reinstating a ban on assault weapons and requiring background checks on all gun sales. He faces stiff opposition in the U.S. Congress and from powerful gun lobbies.
Considering that Americans possess `'about 300 million firearms," Lombardi said, `'people cannot fool themselves that it is enough to limit the number and use (of guns) to impede in the future horrendous massacres like that of Newtown that shook the conscience of America and world, as well as that of children and adults. `'
He was referring to the Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school where 20 children and six adults were killed by a sole attacker last month.
`'But it would be worse to be satisfied with words" of condemnation alone, Lombardi said. And while massacres are `'carried out by unbalanced or hate-driven persons, there is no doubt that they are carried out with firearms," the Vatican spokesman said.
Lombardi renewed Vatican appeals for disarmament and encouragement for measures to fight "the production, commerce and contraband of all types of arms," an industry fueled by `'enormous economic and power interests."

Hitler Gun Ban
"Hitler Gun Ban" seems to be trending as a search term lately. Try the search yourself. Once the results come up, start reading the articles. The ones from liberal bloggers all seem to say the same thing: Hitler did NOT ban guns, he only banned them from Jews and his political enemies.
What happened to the Jews and his political enemies? Looks like a gun ban to me. Of course he was going to let his political allies keep their guns or even increase the number of guns they own. Most of the blogs use that fact to propose that in fact it wasn't a gun ban, but an increase in overall gun ownership. That's one way to interpret it.
I'd bet those same bloggers would believe that the tyrant who's system of governance hinged on the total control by the government, of every citizen's life - was from the right side of the political spectrum.
"...for the Fascist, everything is in the State, and nothing human or spiritual exists, much less has value,-outside the State."

Vatican backs Obama’s gun controls, wants guns “eliminated,” except for the Pope’s armed guards
All of the Roman Catholic libertarians and anarcho-capitalists at LewRockwell.com and the Acton Institute must be grinding their teeth over this one. Choose ye this day. . . .CatholicNews.com reports,
The Catholic Church’s position on gun control is
not easy to find; there are dozens of speeches and talks and a few
documents that call for much tighter regulation of the global arms
trade, but what about private gun ownership?
The answer is resoundingly clear: Firearms in the hands of civilians should be strictly limited and eventually completely eliminated.
But you won’t find that statement in a
headline or a document subheading. It’s almost hidden in a footnote in a
document on crime by the U.S. bishops’ conference and it’s mentioned in
passing in dozens of official Vatican texts on the global arms trade.
The Vatican’s chief spokesman the Rev.
Federico Lombardi, said Saturday that 47 religious leaders have appealed
to members of the U.S. Congress “to limit firearms that are making
society pay an unacceptable price in terms of massacres and senseless
deaths.”
“I am with them,” Lombardi said, in an
editorial carried on Vatican Radio, lining up the Vatican’s moral
support in favor of firearm limits.
`’The initiatives announced by the
American administration for limiting and controlling the spread and use
of weapons are certainly a step in the right direction,” Lombardi said.
Worse yet, it seems a bit hypocritical coming from a guy who travels in a bullet-proof car and is guarded by the oldest continually-operating military force in the world, armed with Glock 19s, H&K MP5s, and SIG 550 assault rifles.

Vatican Wrongly Supports Obama’s Gun Grab
I
miss Pope John Paul II. Even though he had been targeted by would-be
assassins, he still came down firmly for the right of an individual to
defend himself, his family and his state.
In his 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae, the pope cited the Catechism
of the Catholic Church that “legitimate defense can be not only a right
but a grave duty for someone responsible for another’s life, the common
good of the family or of the state. …
Unfortunately, it happens that the need to render the aggressor incapable of causing harm sometimes involves taking his life.”
That’s why it’s so disheartening to hear Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi lining up behind President Obama’s gun restrictions.

That’s why it’s so disheartening to hear Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi lining up behind President Obama’s gun restrictions.
According to Lombardi, speaking on
Vatican Radio, 47 religious leaders have appealed to congressional
members “to limit firearms that are making society pay an unacceptable
price in terms of massacres and senseless deaths. … ’The initiatives
announced by the American administration for limiting and controlling
the spread and use of weapons are certainly a step in the right

The American Catholic bishops have been
leading the legal fight against the Obamacare mandate that all
businesses and organizations including churches must carry insurance
that covers contraceptives and abortions despite religious objections.
The bishops and other plaintiffs have rightly pointed out that the
mandate represents a gross violation of the freedom of religion.
So to then have the Vatican turn around
and support violation of another constitutionally protected right
underscores the internal conflict between supporting individual
freedoms, and the church’s love of bureaucracy and authoritarian power.
The church has a sad history of
flirting with Marxist thought and leftist ideology, which made
organizing the revolt against Obamacare an unlikely undertaking from the
get-go. The mixed signals and cluttered thinking of the Catholic
leadership goes a long way toward explaining why so many Catholics have
supported Obama.
The church itself had a hand in
creating this president by funding training seminars for Obama in his
younger days. The church in the past even went so far as to provide
millions of dollars in funding to several Chicago groups connected to
Obama’s role model Saul Alinsky, who dedicated his “Rules for Radicals”
to Lucifer.
The church’s dalliance with “social
justice” groups has led many Catholics away from biblical teachings.
Where the church should be standing up for human rights and true
justice, the laity often receives a mushy commingling of Marxist
revolutionary thought with biblical thinking.
The Vatican is deeply wrong on the issue of gun control, which only makes victims of those people the church was meant to help.
Catholic clergy would do well to
refresh their memories of Luke 22:36 — “If you don’t have a sword, sell
your cloak and buy one.”
