Air Force to Share Its Info on Planet-Flattening Meteorites

Bolide

Sixty-five million years ago a five-mile wide meteorite smashed into the Earth, wreaking havoc on weather patterns and possibly hastening the extinction of the dinosaurs. In June 1908, a somewhat smaller space rock exploded over a luckily uninhabited Tunguska, Siberia, flattening trees and killing reindeer over a nearly 10-mile radius. “The fire was brighter than the sun,” one eyewitness claimed.

These planet-altering meteorites were once thought quite rare. Then came the Cold War. The U.S. Air Force filled Earth orbit with sophisticated satellites meant to spot nuclear tests and missile launches. The satellites, it turned out, were also quite good at detecting the explosions — the official term is “bolide” — of meteorites like that over Tunguska. We now know they occur as frequently as several times a year. Over the decades, the military has periodically released brief reports on bolides and the other effects of so-called Near-Earth Objects. Today, for the first time, the Air Force is considering openly sharing this vital intel in a systematic way.

There are clear scientific reasons for better data-sharing. “From past experience working with U.S. government satellite data, the information provided is unmatched by any other data source and allows scientific analyses which are otherwise impossible,” Peter Brown told Space.com. But never mind all that. Planet Earth’s safety is at stake. This isn’t national security. It’s global security. “Data from NEO air-burst events observed by the U.S. Department of Defense satellites should be made available to the scientific community to allow it to improve understanding of the NEO hazards to Earth,” stated a report from the National Research Council.

The Air Force anticipates sharing a range of data on bolides, including: date, time, location and altitude of the explosion, meteorite velocity and total radiated energy of the blast. The trick, from the Air Force’s point of view, is sharing info without giving away the capabilities of its most secret satellites. The Air Force has run into a similar problem with its mysterious X-37B space plane. The X-37 is meant, in part, to boost military space awareness. But to soothe other space-faring nations, some critics say the Air Force should share the data the X-37 gathers. Scientists say a shared bolide-tracking system could be modeled on the current Space Situational Awareness Sharing Program, which uses U.S. military systems to track orbital debris, and shares that data with other government agencies, foreign countries and private companies.

“I would say that we’re working it,” said Robert Rego, chief of Space and Cyberspace Operational Integration at Colorado’s Peterson Air Force Base, “not from the perspective of ‘no and how we can’t do it’ … but from ‘yes, and how we can do it’ and make it beneficial while still protecting a space capability.”

Commission Urges U.S. to Step Up Protection for Iraqi Christians

By Elena Garcia|Christian Post Reporter

An independent federal commission on international religious freedom is calling on the U.S. government to "redouble its efforts" in protecting the religious rights and safety of Iraqi Christians.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom wants the government to use Wednesday's United Nations Security Council meeting on Iraq as an "opportunity" to address the "grave situation facing that country’s Christians and other imperiled religious minorities."

Since America entered Iraq in 2003, more than half of the Christian population in Iraq, an estimated 1.4 million, have left the country. More persecuted Christians have chosen to flee the country following a recent wave of violent attacks, including an Oct. 31 slaying of worshippers and priests at Our Lady of Salvation Church in Baghdad.

The recent persecution against Christians only "makes clear" that the "country’s most vulnerable religious minorities remain in peril," stated USCIRF in a statement Tuesday.

They "face targeted violence, including murders and attacks on their places of worship and religious leaders, intimidation, and forced displacement; they also experience discrimination, marginalization, and neglect."

The loss of Iraqi religious groups, including Chaldo-Assyrian, Syriac, and other Christians, Sabean Mandaeans, and Yazidis, results in less diversity in the country and threatens the future of Iraq "as a secure, stable, and pluralistic democracy," the commission asserted.

USCIRF has issued three recommendations for the U.S. government in securing protection for these communities.

First, the group wants the government to work with the Christian and religious representatives in Iraq to beef up military security for places where "these targeted minorities worship, congregate, and live, and work." The U.S. government would periodically inform Congress on progress.

The second recommendation is for U.S. authorities to collaborate with the Iraqi government, Christians and public representatives from other minority groups "to establish, fund, train, and deploy representative local police units to provide additional protection in areas where these communities are concentrated."

Lastly, the commission urges the U.S. development assistance to prioritize "areas where these vulnerable communities are concentrated, including the Nineveh Plains area, and that the use of such funding is determined in consultation with the political and civic leaders of the communities themselves."

Former FBI Agent Sentenced

Defendant Admitted Employing Illegal Aliens in Her Restaurant

DALLAS—Ann Cox, a former special agent with the FBI in Dallas, was sentenced this morning by Chief U.S. District Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater to two years' probation and ordered to pay an $18,000 fine, announced U.S. Attorney James T. Jacks of the Northern District of Texas. Cox, 49, of Rockwall, Texas, pleaded guilty in September to the misdemeanor offense of unlawfully employing aliens.

According to documents filed in the case, from at least August 1997 until December 2008, Cox operated a Schlotzky's Deli in Rockwall. While operating the deli, she hired and employed individuals, knowing that they were not either admitted for permanent residence in the U.S. or authorized to be employed. The documents name a total of six such individuals.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert E. Casey, Jr. stated, "When FBI internal security procedures first detected the possibility that former Special Agent Cox may have committed this crime, I immediately referred this matter to our headquarters in Washington, D.C. Pursuant to established procedures within the Department of Justice, an investigation was then conducted by the Department of Justice, Office of Inspector General and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with the full cooperation of the FBI. While it is disappointing that an FBI special agent chose to break the law, it is important for citizens to understand that the FBI has an unwavering commitment to take appropriate action when transgressions are committed by its employees, the overwhelming majority of whom are above reproach in their professional and personal conduct."

Deputy Criminal Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Guess and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert H. Dunikoski, III, were in charge of the prosecution.

Former Hoffman Estates Man Sentenced to 27 Years in Prison

for Producing, Transporting, and Possessing Child Pornography

CHICAGO—A former Hoffman Estates man was sentenced yesterday to 27 years in federal prison for manufacturing, transporting, and possessing child pornography. The defendant, Donald R. Peppers, 36, pled guilty in August, admitting that he had produced a video of himself sexually molesting a 1-year-old minor knowing that it would be disseminated in interstate commerce via computer. Using an online profile in the name of "illinoisdonboy31," Peppers communicated via computer about brutally sexually molesting children, and he created and traded images of children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge William Hibbler. Peppers must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for release and there is no parole in the federal prison system. The sentence was announced today by Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Peppers has been in federal custody since June 3, 2009, when he was arrested by FBI agents in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he was traveling on business at the time. According to court documents, Peppers had been identified by the FBI's Innocent Images Task Force in Virginia as a possible distributor of child pornography over the Internet.

A search of Peppers' residence by the FBI and Hoffman Estates police following his arrest yielded a collection of hundreds of thousands of images and videos of child pornography, which he had stored on various computer hard drives.

According to his guilty plea, in May 2009, Peppers began communicating with an undercover agent via an internet chat room, using the name "illinoisdonboy31." During these chats, Peppers stated that he collected child pornography and had engaged in illicit sexual conduct with minors. Peppers sent the undercover agent video files depicting the sexual molestation of minors by an adult male, including the one in which Peppers himself molested the infant victim.

The government was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Julie Porter and Tiffany Tracy.

US Child’s Foot Washes Ashore in Wash. State; Second in Four Months

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) – Authorities are seeking more information about a small human foot that washed ashore in Washington state.

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum (FULL-jum) said Tuesday the right foot was still inside a boy’s size 6 “OzArk Trail” hiking boot, and likely belonged to a juvenile or small adult. He says the boots were sold in Walmart stores from 2004 to 2005.

The foot found early last week is believed to have floated in from either the Puyallup River or Puget Sound. It’s the second to wash ashore in Washington state in four months.

In late August, a right foot believed to be that of a woman or child washed up on a beach in Whidbey Island, about 70 miles north of Tacoma.

Fulghum says police don’t yet know if the cases are linked, or if they have any connection to cases in British Columbia, where seven feet have washed ashore in the past four years.

The Untold History of the Inquisition

A cloaking device that can shield macroscopic objects in visible light.

Invisibility Rug Hides 'Large' Objects

A cloaking device can shield macroscopic objects in visible light.

Nature

By Zeeya Merali

Objects large enough to be seen with the naked eye have been swept under an 'invisibility carpet' for the first time.

Invisibility cloaks were proposed in 2006, and prototypes that can shield objects for certain wavelengths of light have since been built. However, until now, physicists have been unable to fabricate a cloak that could hide macroscopic items at visible wavelengths. Two independent groups have now achieved this feat, by building transparent 'carpet cloaks', made from calcite crystals, that lie over the object to be hidden.

Carpet cloaks render covered objects invisible by bending light rays as they enter the cloak and then when they exit it -- after they have bounced off the hidden object. The light is deviated in such a way that the rays seem to have been reflected directly from the ground underneath the object -- as though the object was not there.

To build such a cloak you need a material that will bend the incoming and outgoing light rays by different amounts -- determined by the dimensions of the object underneath, explains Baile Zhang, an optical engineer at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) Centre in Singapore, who designed one of the cloaks. Calcite is perfect for the job because the speed at which polarized light passes through it depends on the crystal's orientation. So by sticking together two pieces of crystal, it is possible to create a cloak that bends incoming and outgoing light by the desired amount.

"The fact that calcite's optical properties depend on orientation is usually a disadvantage in making devices, but I realized we could actually exploit it to our advantage," says Baile Zhang.

Natural solution

Baile Zhang and his colleagues have built a calcite carpet-cloak that can shield a steel wedge that is 38 millimetres long and 2 millimetres high from red, green and blue visible light3. The team designed their cloak to work under water. "I think that governments could make a lot of use out of a cloak that can hide objects on the seabed -- although I won't speculate on exactly what they may want to hide," says team member George Barbastathis, a mechanical engineer also at the SMART Centre.

By contrast, an independent group led by physicists Shuang Zhang at the University of Birmingham, UK, and John Pendry from Imperial College London has built a calcite cloak that can work in air, hiding objects a few centimetres high4. Pendry was one of the first scientists to propose how an invisibility cloak might work. The team, however, were unable to comment as their research has been submitted for publication and is under embargo.

Both of the calcite carpet-cloaks are much cheaper to make than previous invisibility carpets, which were built using intricately fabricated silicon microstructures and could only conceal microscale objects, says Baile Zhang. "Because they were so difficult and expensive to construct they are difficult to scale up," he says. But the calcite cloak uses naturally occurring materials that cost only about US$1,000 to make and are easy to manipulate. "It's not quite easy enough to make at home, but it's not too far off," says Baile Zhang.

Michal Lipson, a physicist at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, says "one of the real worries about cloaking has been that people would only be able to cloak microsize objects." Lipson adds that creating macroscopic devices now shows that "we are close to cloaking objects that we are familiar with in every day life".

NUESTROS MOTIVOS

Police: North Hopewell Twp. man found dead in pool

CHRISTINA KAUFFMAN The York Dispatch

A 53-year-old North Hopewell Township man was found dead and frozen in the above-ground swimming pool to the rear of his home Tuesday night.

Chief Larry D. Bailets Sr. said North Hopewell Township Police were called to the home in the 11000 block of Crossroads Avenue at 6:38 p.m., after a family member found Mark Blizzard floating face down.

"The water in the pool was frozen over and it was obvious he had been in the pool for some time, as long as possibly 24 hours," Bailets said.

Blizzard's wife, 51-year-old Barbara Blizzard, said her husband did not work because he was disabled with Crohn's disease and had undergone 11 neck and back surgeries.

She had last seen him on Monday and hadn't realized he was missing until after the couple's adult son had returned from work Tuesday, she said.

Barbara Blizzard works unusual shifts at a McDonald's in Hampstead, Md., and had gone to sleep at 7:30 p.m. on Monday night, she said.

She hadn't seen her husband, to whom she had been married for 26 years, when she woke on Tuesday morning. She went Christmas shopping, figuring he had gone away without leaving a note, as that would not have been unusual, she said.

"I told him the night before I was going shopping," she said. "I just thought he went out somewhere."

After she returned from shopping and her son returned home, they determined that neither knew where Mark Blizzard had gone, she said.

"I asked if he'd seen him and he hadn't, and we decided let's look outside," she said.

The son found his father shortly after, Barbara Blizzard said.

She said she suspects her husband was tending to a tarp that was placed over the pool, and he must have fallen.

"We had ice on top of the pool on the tarp and he was always trying to fool with the tarp," she said. "We had holes in the tarp because of the weather, it was tearing, and he was always fooling with it."

Police and the York County Coroner's Office are trying to determine what happened, Bailets, the police chief, said.

The coroner's office said an autopsy was taking place Wednesday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown.

The death is York County's second pool-related death in a week. Beverly A. Scott, who had been mayor of Dallastown since 1995, was found dead in her backyard swimming pool on Dec. 8.

Scott, 69, drowned and her death was ruled accidental by the York County Coroner's Office.

Africa's Rapid Urbanization

Africa's Rapid Urbanization · December 15, 2010

Over a third of Africa’s 1 billion inhabitants currently live in urban areas,” wrote the Economist, “but by 2030 that proportion will have risen to a half.”

UN-HABITAT, a United Nations agency reported, that “the population of some cities is set to swell by up to 85% in the next 15 years.”

Cairo, Lagos and Kinshasa will each have between 13 and 16 million people. Of the current populations of these cities some 70% live in slums. Food and water shortages are also predicted.

The rapid urbanization is prophetic. The Bible shows us this in Genesis. When Nimrod tried to establish a world government under a monarchy established in Babel, he build huge cities. His protégés also followed his example and built more cities like Nineveh, Sodom, Gomorrah and Gaza. See Genesis 10.

“…These Babel builders determined to keep their community united in one body, and to found a monarchy that should eventually embrace the whole earth. Thus their city would become the metropolis of a universal empire; its glory would command the admiration and homage of the world and render the founders illustrious. The magnificent tower, reaching to the heavens, was intended to stand as a monument of the power and wisdom of its builders, perpetuating their fame to the latest generations.” Patriarchs and Prophets, page 118.

Nimrod’s attempt at globalization failed, but it was not without consequences for the wicked descendants of Ham. Today, globalization is being attempted again. It too will fail. But like in the days of the generations after the flood, the urbanization into huge megacities will make the inhabitants of the world vulnerable to massive problems, such as disasters, strife, corruption and greed which will create shortages of basic necessities, crime, chaos, disease and other unimaginable problems.

Globalists Can Win Cyber War, But Not Information War

Eric Blair

Activist Post

The establishment has been desperately trying to implement legal control over the Internet. They’re attacking freedom of speech and the open Internet from all angles; through government tools, corporate methods, and even the courts. All three of these methods are converging in the WikiLeaks case, but that’s not the only battle being waged in the so-called “all-out cyber war.”

The government, through the DHS, has already shut down over 80 websites for copyright infringement without due process, in addition to floating the idea to tax information websites. Corporations like Google, Verizon, and others are making deals to tip the Internet in favor of major players.  Finally, in the courts, ambulance-chasing copyright infringement lawyers are bullying blogs to pay settlements despite Fair Use rights — while their ultimate goal is to set a golden precedent with which to attack all news aggregating websites.

Don’t you see what’s happening here as the media continues to hype this cyber war?  Because of the fierce resistance to all proposed changes to the Internet, they need an Internet “Pearl Harbor” to usher in these draconian laws. As the hacktivist army of WikiLeaks defenders are now reportedly turning their focus on UK government websites, we can expect that after the first major Web interruption, governments will convene urgent meetings to demand better enforcement and more control over the Internet.

Therefore this cyber war would seem to be playing right into their hands — as already, mainstream polling on the sheeple ranch called the United States shows that 70% believe Julian Assange and WikiLeaks is doing harm and should be prosecuted.  It won’t be difficult to convince the masses to shut down dissent if essential infrastructure is “attacked” in this all-out war.  Especially if that infrastructure is the Web itself.

Indeed, even the aware among us would suffer greatly if the Internet was down for multiple days.  It is our heroin, our entertainment, our news, our communication medium,  our livelihood . . . in essence, our freedom.  I think most of us would beg for at least limited access after less than a week of being blacked out.  We’d be on our hands and knees saying, “We don’t need all of it; just give us enough access to get our fix.  Please, I’ll even register for an Internet tracking ID number.”

Incidentally, it would seem the elite know the power they have over this technical opiate of the masses simply by shutting it down when the offensive anarchy gets too chaotic.  They will simply switch the Fortune 1000 over to Internet 2 and let us vermin swim in the virus-ridden battle-torn Internet 1.  Don’t worry, though, they’ll let us buy controlled access to their network where they will openly track, trace, and database our every keystroke and mouse click.

However, this war is not about technology, it is about the freedom of information and ability to view it in privacy.  Anyone who is fundamentally against WikiLeaks is the enemy of free speech, because WikiLeaks has become the poster child for the people’s right to information.  The stronger a critic expresses their disdain for WikiLeaks, the more tyrannical we can expect the response to be.  In other words, the more dangerous they can make WikiLeaks out to be, calling them “high-tech terrorist” and the like, the further the compromise bar is pushed in the establishment’s direction.

Because the establishment is already in control of the technical gears of the Internet, they can and will win a technical cyber war — even if they have to go nuclear and pull the plug to do it.  The hacktivists fighting for Internet free speech have truth and principle on their side, yet they may be falling into the King’s trap quite effectively.  Just as the establishment needs violent street protests to justify their armored police state, they also need offensive protests by these hacktivists to justify policing the Internet.

Victor Hugo famously said, “All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.”  The ideas of liberty, justice, peace, and the right to open-source knowledge has come of age; it is clear that the globalist machine is opposed to these ideals — thus they’re losing the information war.  Therefore, they must attack the battlefield of the infowar under the pretext of protecting cyberspace from those pesky freedom-of-speech bandits.

This so-called cyber war will likely fester into a Pearl Harbor-type event.  When it occurs, the mainstream media will incite fear in one hand and sell the solution out of the other.  We must be aware of their tactics and keep fighting for Internet freedom with heavy doses of the truth.

Reclaiming the rainbow

Reclaiming the rainbow
Becky Yeh - OneNewsNow California correspondent

RainbowAn activist fighting for traditional marriage in California is urging Christians to reclaim the rainbow from homosexual-rights activists who have hailed the symbol as their icon of "gay" pride.

Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse of the San Diego-based Ruth Institute rightly argues that the rainbow is a sign of God's covenant with man, and she says proponents of Proposition 8 -- California's measure that passed in 2008 to define marriage as between a man and a woman -- are the original "rainbow coalition."

Jennifer Roback Morse (Ruth Institute)"Proposition 8 was passed by a great grassroots coalition that included people from all across the religious traditions, and also people of every race and color," Morse recognizes. "We are the real rainbow coalition. The gay lobby does not own the rainbow."

She tells OneNewsNow that she wore a rainbow-colored scarf to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals hearing on Proposition 8 as a statement to signify that supporters of traditional marriage still own the symbol.

"We can't simply let that go by. Families put rainbows in their children's nurseries. Little Christian preschools will have rainbows...Noah's Ark and all the animals.... Those are great Christian symbols, great Jewish symbols," the Ruth Institute president points out.

She adds that marriage is an issue that goes beyond race and religion, and she encourages Christians to take back the symbol of the rainbow because it represents God's promise to humanity.

Religious litmus test applied in Ariz.

Religious litmus test applied in Ariz.
Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow

In Arizona, a candidate for a panel to redraw congressional districts has been barred for his faith.

The Arizona Commission on Appellate Court Appointments is charged with qualifying people for the state commission that will decide redistricting. Cathi Herrod, president of the Center for Arizona Policy, picks up the story from last week involving nominees for the Independent Redistricting Commission.

"At that meeting, a commissioner disqualified an applicant simply because of the applicant's religious faith," she explains. "Commissioner Louis Araneta spoke out against Christopher Gleason's application because he thought that it had 'strong religious overtones' and even said that 'there should be a separation of church and state.'"

Cathi Herrod (Center for AZ Policy)Herrod stresses that a person's religion has nothing to do with the redistricting effort -- but that it is a matter of doing the math and understanding the geography.

"We've called on Commissioner Araneta to resign his position," notes Herrod. "And we also have been concerned because out of the 13 other members of the commission, no one challenged Commissioner Araneta's use of religion as a disqualifier." (See update from AP below)

Herrod admits she finds such "religion bias" troubling. "...The Commission is the same group that nominates judges for Arizona's appellate courts," she says in a press release. "It's deeply disturbing that those individuals charged with selecting judges would say that faith in Jesus Christ is a disqualification for public service."

Gleason, from Pima County, is on the board of 4-Tucson, a Christian community service organization. Herrod tells OneNewsNow that should make it clear Gleason is not associated with a dangerous cult.

Panel member quits

Associated Press logo smallPHOENIX (AP) - A member of a state panel has resigned amid controversy over whether an applicant for Arizona's redistricting commission was rejected because of his involvement in a religious group.

Louis Araneta had voiced concern during a December 8 nominating commission meeting about separation of church and state while discussing Tucson businessman Christopher Gleason's application. The application included references to Gleason's involvement with a Christian community service organization.

Critics said Araneta and possibly other commission members seemed to have blackballed Gleason because of his religious activities. Araneta denied that in his resignation letter, and said he quit because he didn't want his comments to be a distraction for the commission, whose main job is screening applicants for appellate court openings.
