'Doomsday Comet' Elenin to swing by earth today (well, 22 million miles away)

'Doomsday Comet' Elenin to swing by earth today (well, 22 million miles away)

The 'Doomsday Comet' Elenin will make its closest approach to earth today, something conspiracy theorists have long feared.

The comet started breaking up in August after being blasted by a huge solar storm so tomorrow, when it comes to within 22 million miles of earth, it will be a stream of debris rather than an intact comet.

Astronomer Don Yeomans of the Near-Earth Object Programme Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, told Space.com: 'Folks are having trouble finding it, so I think it's probably dead and gone.'

Doomsday comet: Elenin will pass by the earth tomorrow but will mainly consist of debris

Journey: NASA today stepped in to try to allay baseless fears that a comet heading into the solar system from deep space will trigger disaster on Earth

Journey: NASA today stepped in to try to allay baseless fears that a comet heading into the solar system from deep space will trigger disaster on Earth

That means anyone who wants to get a glimpse of the comet on Sunday will have to have their binoculars or telescopes out.

Previous rumours about Elenin said the comet was going to be a major threat to earth and set off havoc by causing major earthquakes and tsunamis.

Others said that Elenin was not a comet
at all, but in fact a rogue planet called Nibiru that would bring about
the end times on Earth.

But Mr Yeomans said that all these theories were nonsense: 'Elenin was a second-rate, wimpy little comet that never should have been noted for anything, really. t was not even a bright one.'

According to Space.com, Elenin's remains will not be the only objects about to make their closest pass of Earth.

One day after the Elenin flyby, the small asteroid 2009 TM8 will zip close by. Like Elenin, it poses no risk of striking earth.

Elenin was discovered by Russian astronomer Leonid Elenin in December 2010.

It never posed any threat to life on Earth, Mr Yeomans said. It was far too small to exert any appreciable influence on our planet unless it managed to hit us.

'Just driving to work every day in my subcompact car is going to have far more of a gravitational effect on Earth than this comet ever will,' he said.

Elenin's supposed connection to earthquakes was just a correlation, and a weak one at that, he added. There is nothing to worry about.

'It's time to move on to the next Armageddon,' he said.

World 'will end on Friday 10/21/2011 says preacher who claims the Apocalypse has arrived

A doomsday date for your diary! World 'will end on Friday' says preacher who claims the Apocalypse has arrived

Doomsday preacher Harold Camping was left a laughing stock when his prediction that the world would end on May 21 failed to materialise.

But the 90-year-old Californian may well have the last laugh after revealing that date was in fact Judgment Day - a spiritual moment when the righteous would be chosen - and simply a warm-up for the Rapture which happens exactly five months later.

This means that Friday, October 21, will mark the start of the Apocalypse - when believers will be whisked away into heaven and hell will be unleashed on earth.

And cynics should be warned, as the
Rapture Index - a monitor of current affairs for the frequency and
intensity of end-time signs mentioned in the Bible - is at an almost
all-time high.

Back again? Thousands of Harold Camping's supporters publicised his campaign warning of the end of the world on May 21

Will you be back again? Thousands of Harold Camping's supporters publicised his campaign warning of the end of the world on May 21

Bed-ridden Camping, who suffered a stroke soon after 'Judgment Day', said: 'We can be sure that the whole world [will be annihilated] on 21 October 2011.'

And since he said that the day of judgment had already passed, there was nothing the non-righteous could do to save their souls.

Therefore, he added, there was no point in advertising it to the extent of his May prediction - which saw his radio station sponsoring a worldwide publicity blitz.

Camping's new, muted, prediction of
imminent death and destruction comes as the Rapture Index - dubbed a
'Doomsday Dow Jones' - hovers at an all-time high.

Warning: The Rapture Index is a 'Doomsday Dow Jones' that predicts, when it has a high score, the end of the world

Controversial: Is Harold Camping a figure of fun or a true prophet of modern times?

Controversial: Is Harold Camping a figure of fun or a true prophet of modern times?

In August the table - which measures 45 categories including levels of drugs abuse, anti-Semitism and wild weather - hit an unprecedented 184.

It now currently stands slightly lower at 180 - only two points below the 182 it reached in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist atrocities.

Unrest in the Middle East, the global economic crisis, the famine in the Horn of Africa and the slowing down of recent volcanic activity are all signs that the world is about to end, it claims.

The index, created by Terry James in December 1993, adds on its website: 'The Antichrist: The EU now has President. This office could be a precursor to the AC'.

James, of Little Rock, Arkansas, said he did not use his table to make predictions, but to measure 'the type of activity that could act as a precursor to the Rapture'.

He said: 'The higher the number, the faster we're moving towards the end.' And he revealed that any figure over 160 made it time to 'fasten the seatbelts'.

Camping, a radio evangelist and president of a network of radio stations known as Family Radio, spent up to $100million over seven years predicting the Rapture.

His followers put up billboards, with many spending thousands of their own money in passing his message on.

He was openly mocked by talk show hosts and comedians, and religious leaders blasted him as a false prophet.

Non-believers and Christians alike made fun of his message and protests and demonstrations were held against his prediction - many of which turned into parties as the date approached.

He is not alone in his predictions as, over the past 2,000 years there have been at least 200 publicised prophecies that the world would end on a specific date.

Overreaction? The UK ship was warned by agents to reposition the guns

A British Royal Navy ship was ordered to turn its guns around because they were parked pointing at a hotel room Michelle Obama was staying in.
Fearing the First Lady might be in danger, minders ordered the captain of the HMS Edinburgh stationed in Cape Town, South Africa, to switch them away from her five-star suite.
The U.S. agents have since been accused of overreacting after it emerged the Sea Dart missiles were, in fact, loaded with blanks having been used during a ceremony in honour of a sailor who had died.
Former Royal Navy officer Mike Critchley told the Daily Mirror: 'This is typical American Secret Service going over the
top.
'I would have thought that they could trust their British allies to not
put a missile through the bedroom window of the First Lady. It is
unfortunate that this happened at an extremely sad time for the ship.'
Mrs Obama was on an official visit to South Africa in June and was staying in a luxury suite at the five star Table Bay Hotel.
The boat, meanwhile, happened to be in the middle of a ceremonial routine to remember Lieutenant Sara Hellawell, a 26-year-old whose body was found onboard a few days before.
That did not stop the agents raging at them, saying: 'You can’t point those guns at the
First Lady.'

Describing the ceremony, a Navy spokesman said: 'This involved the drill missiles
being on their launcher. American officials did visit the ship. They
simply wanted to know if the missiles were live. When it was explained
that they were drill rounds they went away content.'

A White House spokesman told the Mirror: 'We do not comment on security questions
regarding the First Lady.'

The revelation came as the First Lady dazzled at a state dinner hosted by President Barack Obama for South Korean President Lee Myung-bak at the White House.

Hemlines were soaked and raindrops spattered tuxedos, but not even a thunderous downpour could dampen the excitement of guests at one of Washington's most exclusive social events.

'President Lee has had a very full day - and a very wet day,' Mr Obama said at the event.

'Gay' hate vandalizes church, threatens even more violence

Note on bricks thrown through window: 'This is just a sample of what we will do'

By Drew Zahn
Brick thrown through window of Christian Liberty Academy

In the early morning hours, on the eve of a banquet designed to expose the homosexual activist agenda, security cameras on the campus of the Christian Liberty Academy, a school run by the Church of Christian Liberty in Arlington Heights, Ill., captured what may be a prominent example of an anti-Christian "hate crime."

An unknown vandal or vandals threw chunks of concrete bricks through the school's entryway with a message protesting the banquet, which was planned by Americans for Truth about Homosexuality, or AFTAH, to honor pro-family activist and author of "The Pink Swastika," Dr. Scott Lively.

Upon the concrete bricks were written the words "Shut down Lively," and the vandals included a note theatening more violence if the church and school didn't stop hosting such "homophobic" guests.

"This is just a sample of what we will do if you don't shut down Scott Lively and AFTAH," the note reads. "F--- Scott Lively. Quit the homophobic s---!"

Hours later, a "press release" was sent by email to AFTAH President Peter LaBarbera, Church of Christian Liberty Pastor Calvin Lindstrom and the Chicago Independent Media Center claiming responsibility for the attack.

"In the early morning hours of October 15th, we put two chunks of concrete through the glass windows and doors of the Christian Liberty Academy," claims the author of the release, identifying himself only by a vulgar nickname. "We did this because at 6 p.m. today they will be hosting an event organized by the homophobic hate group Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, that [sic] will be presenting an award to Scott Lively."

The statement continues, "These chunks of concrete were thrown through these windows and doors for two reasons: to show that there is a consequence for hatred and homophobia in our community and to directly cause this event to be shut down. If this event is not shut down, and the homophobic day trainings do not end, the Christian Liberty Academy will continue to be under constant attack."

"In my 20 plus years of pro-family activism," Lively told WND, "I have never seen such a brazen act of 'gay' militancy."

"We see the homosexual agenda is becoming so arrogant in its growing power," LaBarbera added, "but we've never seen this before, what we would call 'homofascism' being raised to the level of domestic terrorism."

The Christian Liberty Academy has hosted several events for Americans For Truth over the years, including last year's three-day Truth Academy, which drew a large protest led by the Chicago-based Gay Liberation Network, or GLN. The GLN has also announced that it will protest the AFTAH banquet.

"The GLN has always targeted us," LaBarbera told WND. "But right now we don't know who did this. It could be just a rogue activist. It could be just one person. We don't know, and I wouldn't want to link the attack to any group unless we had evidence linking it."

Investigating the attack has been turned over to the police, but Pastor Lindstrom told WND the church has no plans to cancel the banquet.

When asked how the church would respond to the attack, Lindstrom answered, "In prayer. The Lord is our ultimate defender, and we trust the Lord will give us safety and will bring whoever did this to justice."

"A lot of Chistians cower in fear before the power and influence of the homosexual lobby," LaBarbera added. "It's not helpful. If you demonstrate you can be intimidated, you reward the bully. The 'gay' bully has been rewarded enough times, so many times they think they can get their way. We hope more churches will refuse to be bullied and will stand up to tell the truth about the homosexual agenda."

Lindstrom told WND he wasn't comfortable labeling the attack as a "hate crime," since such legislation is "typically used against Christians," but did say the police had intoned the attack may be investigated as such.

Matt Barber, AFTAH's board chairman and vice president of Liberty Counsel Action, however, wasn't so hesitant.

When asked if the attack could be grounds for an FBI investigation, he answered, "Absolutely: anti-Christian hate crime, civil rights violation, terrorism and potential others."

Barber also released a statement about the attack: "AFTAH is called in love to share God's truth about homosexual sin. This courageous Christian organization is also tasked with exposing the lies of the political sexual anarchy movement. Homofascist organizations and hard-left extremist groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center lie and smear Christian organizations like AFTAH as 'hate groups.' We will not compromise on God's truth. Neither will we be terrorized into silence. God's Word says that there is no fear in love because perfect love (Christ) casts out fear. Although we are beginning to see a sharp rise in left-wing extremism and violence across our nation, we will not be intimidated. We will continue to fearlessly respond to hate with truth in love. 'Gay' activists: Your terrorist tactics have failed."

Animosity toward Dr. Lively

Lively is the founder and president of California-based Abiding Truth
Ministries and its subsidiary, Defend the Family International. Lively developed the ministry to respond to the deterioration of family life and the decline of Christian influence in America and many other countries.

The author of five books, Lively has appeared on hundreds of radio and TV programs and travels around the United States speaking at churches, seminars and conferences on issues of family life and the "culture war." He also travels around the world meeting with foreign religious, media and civic leaders, lecturing in universities and holding seminars for churches, seminaries, social organizations and Christian political parties.

While AFTAH is planning its banquet to honor Lively, Lindstrom told WND many homosexual groups have "a special place of hatred" for him.

The press release claiming responsibility for the attack on the Christian Liberty Academy even blamed Lively for murder:

"In 2009, Lively and other American homophobes spoke at a conference in Uganda called 'Exposing the Truth About Homosexuality and the Homosexual Agenda,'" the release asserts. "This conference stirred the anti-gay atmosphere that already exists in Uganda, a country with laws that punish homosexual acts with up to 14 years in prison. As a direct result of this conference, participants have drafted a bill that, if passed, would increase the sentencing for homosexual acts to life sentences and execution and make it a legal responsibility to report homosexuals in the community.

It continues, "On Jan. 26, 2011, Ugandan gay rights activist David Kisule was murdered after being outed in a newspaper ad that listed names and photos of queer people in the community as a part of an anti-gay campaign that is a result of Scott Lively's visit."

The GLN took up a similar complaint about Lively's time in Uganda in a letter to prominent Chicago pastor Erwin Lutzer, urging Lutzer to decline speaking at the AFTAH banquet because Lively and LaBarbera allegedly "support violence [against homosexuals] outright."

Lively, however, made public a letter to LaBarbera in which he countered claims about fomenting "hate" and "violence" in Uganda:

"I am a Bible-believing Christian who abhors violence against anyone, and has never advocated violence or hatred against homosexuals," Lively asserts. "During my 2009 trip [to Uganda] I also addressed members of the Ugandan Parliament in their national assembly hall. My advice to the MPs regarding the law they were contemplating but had not yet drafted was to focus on rehabilitation and not punishment. I urged them to become the first government in the world to develop a state-sponsored recovery system for homosexuality on the model we have in the United States for alcoholism.

"In contradiction to my advice, a few months after the seminar an MP introduced a bill to criminalize homosexuality," he continues. "The terms of the bill were harsh, as is very common in African countries, including capital punishment. … I do not support capital punishment for any sex crimes, let alone simple homosexuality, which I view as a treatable behavioral disorder, and so I opposed the bill. I was nevertheless accused in the international media of not only endorsing the bill, but of advocating for it."

As for the murder of David Kato Kisule, Lively points out there's no cause to blame him for the crime.

"Not once, but twice, when supposed homosexual activists in Uganda were killed, it was implied by the liberal Western media that I was responsible," Lively asserts. "In both cases the deaths were later proved to be unrelated to the passions surrounding the Ugandan bill. The first turned out to be the work of pagan witch doctors involved in some bizarre ritual. The second, involving the grisly murder of Ugandan homosexual activist David Kato [Kisule], turned out to be a crime of passion by a male prostitute whom Kato had bailed out of jail and taken to be his houseboy."

He concludes, "I must, however, exhort my fellow Christians not to allow themselves to be influenced by the propaganda nor intimidated by the harassment tactics. It has always been the case that the cause of Christ is advanced only through selfless courage in the face of determined opposition."

DADT Repeal Was Never Enough For Homosexual Lobby

Public Advocate Banner

The repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell has left the military wide open to attack by the Homosexual Lobby.

From the beginning I told you that the Homosexual Lobby's designs against our military wouldn’t end at the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

A group of homosexual soldiers who plotted for years in secret have just emerged to distribute their propaganda on base!

They demand the “right” to spread their filth.

Already they have forced two branches of the military to endorse their magazine “OutServe,” which is now bragging to everyone that radical homosexual culture has become a permanent part of military life.

They have turned the men and women who selflessly defend our country into political pawns in their anti-moral agenda.

And they haven’t stopped there.

They also demand special housing and benefit privileges for homosexual “couples” on base.

They even want the military to violate the Defense of Marriage Act by performing legal homosexual marriages!

I was right.  They didn’t stop at just repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

The military has been so under-cut by the recent actions of the most radically pro-Homosexual administration in history, they think they have no choice but to comply.

And so they have instructed chaplains to start performing same-sex marriages.

Right now the chaplains still have a choice in that matter, but that won’t last for long.

The Homosexual Lobby seeks nothing less than the complete infiltration of all aspects of American society.

Whether it’s our military, our schools, our private businesses, or our churches, they won’t stop until they control it all.

Soon “homosexual marriage” will be mandatory in the military.  Every chaplain will be required to bless any same-sex union or be charged with violating their “rights.”

And what’s even worse, these ministers will be risking military court martial if they refuse.

These men and women serving in uniform have no one to protect them, except Public Advocate.

But I need your support to do it.

Please stand with me to defend those who have so selflessly defended our country.

For the Family,

Eugene Delgaudio

President, Public Advocate of the United States

Occupy York helps occupy Harrisburg

About a dozen of the local group's members rallied with others on the Capitol steps Saturday.

York, PA - About 12 members of a group coined Wednesday as "Occupy York" helped occupy Harrisburg Saturday, standing in solidarity with the monthlong Occupy Wall Street movement in New York City and a similar group based in the state capital.

Starting at the Capitol steps, they mingled around Strawberry Square and picketed the Wells Fargo office on North Third Street. The rally was scheduled to run from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday.

Organizers said the crowd peaked at about 150 about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, and numbered about 80 at 11 a.m.

"I'm tired of not being heard," Rachel Seward McKelvey, 44, of York, said Saturday from the protest. "Today's a great day to be out with a bunch of other Americans who are making sure their voices are being heard."

This weekend, it's unlikely many legislators, state employees, or financial workers were in their offices to physically hear the screams coming from the sidewalk below. But that doesn't mean their efforts weren't worth it, said McKelvey, who works for a nonprofit helping others find affordable housing.

"The standard of living in this country has gotten to the point that some people are too poor for me to help them," she said. "My standard of living is being affected by rich people who have no idea what it's like to have to pay bills and deal with the day in, day out."

McKelvey, herself, hasn't gotten a raise in four years.

"This is life-affirming," she said of the protest. "It makes me believe that we're all doing the right thing."

Lisa Lefevre, 47, arrived at the Capitol steps at 10 p.m. Friday. She left at 2 a.m., and came back eight hours later.

The Spring Garden Township woman lives on a fixed income. She's an unemployed, single mother of two kids.

"The cost of living being as high as it is, the cost of goods, getting as high as it is -- it's making it really difficult for the average person to support their family," she said, balancing her phone and two signs.

One read, "free your mind." The other: "One love, no labels."

"That's something I feel strongly about," she said. "Conservative, Democrat, socialist, (tea party members), whatever. No labels, focus on everything we have in common."

The protest served as an umbrella for a menu of issues, from fracking in the Marcellus Shale to arguments against the Federal Reserve.

For 12-year-old Michael Payan, son of Occupy York co-organizer Maria Payan, the issue was the future -- what life will be like in 10 years when he graduates from college.

"It's just easy to be really poor or really rich, and you can't change that anymore," he said. "Of course, it scares me. The way we're going, things can only get worse."

The Patriot-News contributed to this story.

Nationally

Four weeks ago, protesters began camping out in New York's Financial District. Since then, the protest, aimed at corporate greed, has spread to at least two dozen cities.

13 arrested in prostitution raid at Philly Mummers club

One night a month, police say, the inside of the modest Mummers' Downtowners Fancy Brigade clubhouse in South Philadelphia transformed into a bacchanalian free-for-all where dozens of men ate, drank, and had sex with prostitutes in full view of each other.

For a $30 cover charge, attendees got one free beer from the cash bar, food, and access to the women at the party. The women, police said, walked around scantily clad or naked, charging from $30 to $100 for sex.

On Tuesday night, the festivities came to an abrupt end when police officers swarmed the two-story building near Second Street and Snyder Avenue. About 50 men and 20 women were inside.

Police arrested 13 people in the prostitution sweep, including 10 women and two executives of the Downtowners.

John Murray, 56, of Deptford, the club's financial secretary, and Alfred Sanborn, 44, of South Philadelphia, its steward, were arrested on liquor violation charges. The two acted as bartenders during the parties, and the clubhouse did not have a liquor license, police said.

Lawrence Crovetti, 65, of Feasterville, was charged with promoting prostitution by arranging for the women to get to the building. Police said he organized the parties and rented the building each month. Authorities on Wednesday were uncertain how long the parties had been held at the clubhouse.

Calls to multiple members of the Downtowners were not returned Wednesday.

The Philadelphia New Year's Shooters and Mummers Association said in a statement that the events at the club had taken place without the knowledge or approval of the association, and that any money raised that was found to be linked to illegal activities would be donated to charity.

Murray and Sanborn were aware of the prostitution, said Deputy Police Commissioner William Blackburn, but police did not have enough evidence to charge them with prostitution-related offenses. The dozens of men seen interacting with the women were not arrested, either.

"We weren't privy to the conversations between the males and the females, where there was a price and a particular act that was identified," Blackburn said. "Our main targets were the females."

Police also seized about $4,000 from the clubhouse, as well as a handgun, the owner's permit to carry, and a small amount of drugs.

Police said they did not know whether the money collected at the parties was for Mummers-related expenses.

The Downtowners group, which was formed in 1959, is among the most successful Fancy Brigades. Its website advertises its clubhouse as available for rental for parties, citing its air-conditioned banquet hall, full kitchen facilities, and "clean, modern bathrooms."

The investigation into the club began almost two months ago, after police received tips that women were soliciting sex on the second floor of the building every second Tuesday of the month between 7 and 11 p.m., Blackburn said.

Lt. Charles Green of the citywide vice unit said an undercover officer gained access to one of the parties last month after wrangling an invitation from Crovetti. Inside, the officer saw women walking around wearing next to nothing, as well as about 50 men.

About 7:30 Tuesday night, two undercover officers made a repeat visit to the party. As the officers made their way around the building, they saw a man pulling his pants up near a naked woman in one room, and others engaging in sex acts in view of the bartenders and others. Meanwhile, Green said, 10 women approached the officers about paying for sex.

"It was just so out in the open, and so obvious what was going on," Green said.

Neighbors of the clubhouse appeared shocked by the news, and some expressed disgust at learning that the parties were occurring in what they considered a family-oriented neighborhood. However, many declined to give their names and said they feared retaliation from club members if they criticized the group.

One woman said that most club members live in New Jersey or Delaware, and that she always knew they when they were having a party by the cars with out-of-state license plates parked on the street.

"It's shocking to all of us," she said. "This is not the kind of neighborhood where you expect something like this to happen."

Another neighbor, whose grandfather was a Mummer, lamented the damage to the organization's reputation.

"I think it's a disgrace," he said. "There are young kids who want to take the time to learn about the traditions of the Mummers, and sew the costumes, and they destroyed that sense of heritage."

Some neighbors said they had heard of exotic dancers being hired for poker games at the clubhouse.

"I heard they had strippers with their card games," said Jimmy Fiocca Jr. "But it was by invitation only. And I never thought they were prostitutes. No one thought that."

Also arrested were Philadelphia residents Michelle Lauber, 32; Sherry Davidson, 40; Regina Mahoney, 26; Chiante Galezniak, 35; Adriana Arena, 51; and Alexis Simon, 24. Police also arrested Virginia Ruiz, 46, of Bear, Del.; Judith Jacobs, 36, of Sicklerville; Jennifer Quenderfield, 36, of Conshohocken; and Barbara Gogos, 44, of Cheltenham.
