Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Child Porn
David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that JEFFREY ANDREW RICHARDS, 45, of Burlington, waived his right to indictment and pleaded guilty yesterday, March 3, before United States Magistrate Judge Donna F. Martinez in Hartford to one count of possession of child pornography.
According to court documents and statements made in court, in October 2006, RICHARDS used his work-issued computer and compact discs to amass a collection of child pornography. RICHARDS possessed more than 600 images and videos in his child pornography collection, including many images of children under the age of 12 engaging in sexually explicit conduct.
RICHARDS is scheduled to be sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Alvin W. Thompson on June 29, 2011, at which time RICHARDS faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000.
This case has been investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Connecticut Computer Crimes Task Force, and the Glastonbury Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anastasia E. King.
The Connecticut Computer Crimes Task Force investigates crimes occurring over the Internet, including computer intrusion, Internet fraud, copyright violations, Internet threats and harassment and online crimes against children. The Task Force also provides computer forensic review services for participating agencies. The Task Force is housed in the main FBI office in New Haven, Connecticut. Man Charged with Enticement of a Minor
On February 24, 2011, Roy R. Browne, 28, of Columbia, Ill. was indicted by a Federal
Grand Jury sitting in East St. Louis, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois,
Stephen R. Wigginton, announced today. The Indictment charges Browne with Enticement of a
Minor. The violation is alleged to have taken place on February 4, 2011, in Monroe County, Illinois.
Trial has been set for May 2, 2011. If convicted, Browne faces a term of imprisonment of
not less than ten (10) years nor more than imprisonment life, a $250,000 fine, and a term of
supervised release of five (5) years to life.
An indictment is merely the method by which federal charges are lodged. A defendant is
presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat
the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the
Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child
Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local
resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet,

235 months for Transporting Child Porn
RICHMOND, VA—Wade Robert Ellis, age 37, of Chesterfield County, Virginia, was sentenced today by Senior United States District Judge Robert E. Payne to 235 months’ incarceration for one count of Transportation of Child Pornography. Ellis pled guilty to the charge on September 29, 2010. Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, announced the sentence.
According to court documents, law-enforcement officers identified Ellis making child pornography images available for download using peer-to-peer file sharing software. During their investigation, agents executed a search warrant at Ellis’s residence, where they recovered several computers, at least 18 computer hard drives, hundreds of computer disks and other electronic storage media. A subsequent forensic examination of two of the computer hard drives revealed over 475 image files of child pornography. Ellis later admitted to agents that he had used various file-sharing programs to view and obtain child pornography over the Internet.
Ellis also admitted in a subsequent interview with law-enforcement officers that he had engaged in sexually explicit conduct with a minor female relative while she was in his care and custody on multiple occasions in 2007 and 2009.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Richmond Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth C. Wu prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.

Christian leaders fear large-scale violence like that of Kandhamal in 2008.
Hindu extremists have attacked Koya tribal Christians in villages in a remote area of Orissa state at least 15 times since Dec. 8, 2010, Christian leaders said.
In the latest incident in Murliguda, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Malkangiri town, about 60 assailants from the Hindu extremist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh on Feb. 23 damaged the eardrums of Bhadan Hontal and beat another Christian, Markari Soma, until he fell unconscious, according to a report by the Malkangiri District Christian Manch (MDCM, with Manch meaning “Forum”).
Christian women, some pregnant, as well as children were among those injured in the attacks on churches, reported Pastor Vijay Purusu of Bethel Church and president of the MDCM. The spate of attacks began on Dec. 8 in Katanpali village, when about 35 Hindu extremists stormed the house of Pastor Mark Markani and beat him.
“Police action was delayed, so it resulted in more attacks against the Christians,” Pastor Purusu told Compass.
On Dec. 25, some 200 extremists barged into a Christmas Day celebration at a church in Koyi Konda village, beat the worshippers and destroyed furniture. Some church members received serious injuries on their hands, head and chest. About 10 houses belonging to Christians and their crops were destroyed, according to the MDCM.
The Christians filed a police complaint, but no action was taken, the forum reported.
“Persecution against the Christians has become a daily occurrence in the area,” Pastor Purusu said.
Christians have suffered midnight raids on prayer meetings in which they have been beaten, he said, resulting in some Christians fleeing their homes and going into hiding. At least four families have left their village and not returned due to extremist warnings, reported the MDCM.
“There is great fear among the people because of the threats they received from the extremists,” Pastor Purusu said.
At the same time, Hindu extremists have forced about 25 people to convert into Hinduism in the Mottu area, the forum reported.
Church leaders said increased attacks on Christians are a symptom of fear and envy among Hindu extremists, who perceive that Christianity is spreading in many areas and who mistake Christian social and educational ministries as illegally “luring” people to convert.
The MDCM last month met with the district collector and superintendent of police, and Christian leaders had submitted a memorandum to the state chief minister on Jan. 27.
“Delayed action of the police, and less police force on duty aggravated the matter,” the Rev. Rendang Remo Paul stated in the MDCM report. He led a team consisting of representatives of the National Council of Churches in India, Church of South India and the Indian Missionaries Society that met with district collector on Feb. 3.
“We told the district collector that the situation must not become another Kandhamal [where large-scale violence broke out in Orissa in 2008], and the district administrator is responsible to curb the situation,” Pastor Paul stated. “To our plea he said, ‘Let’s see, because it has just started.’”
The local Christian community has met with various district authorities to address the situation, including the chief minister, said Tehmina Arora of the Christian Legal Association.
“However, the situation in Malkangiri is very tense, and the police do not have control over large portions of the district due to Naxalites [Communist militants],” she said. “This is the biggest hurdle in controlling the situation.”
Yesterday (March 3) area Christian leaders again met with the area district collector, who assured them that immediate action would be taken. Meantime, village Christians received rice and some essential items from the administration.
Area Christians fear that Malkangiri may see the same kind of eruption of violence that killed at least 100 people in Kandhamal district, as the same officials – R. Vineel Khrishna, district collector; Anurudh Kumar Singh, superintendent of police; a second officer of Mottu police station identified only as Jaal; and a project director, Gobinda Dansena – have been transferred from Kandhamal to Malkangiri district, Pastor Paul reported.

In a new study, a team of researchers has proposed a new theory of CTCs that can resolve the grandfather paradox, and they also perform an experiment showing how such a scheme works. The researchers, led by Seth Lloyd from MIT, along with scientists from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy; the University of Pavia in Pavia, Italy; the Tokyo Institute of Technology; and the University of Toronto, have published their study in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters. The concepts in the study are similar to an earlier study by some of the same authors that was posted at arXiv.org last year.
“Einstein's theory of general relativity supports closed timelike curves,” Lloyd told PhysOrg.com. “For decades researchers have argued over how to treat such objects quantum mechanically. We believe that our theory is the correct theory of such objects. Moreover, our theory shows how time travel might be accomplished even in the absence of general relativistic closed timelike curves.”
In the new theory, CTCs are required to behave like ideal quantum channels of the sort involved in teleportation. In this theory, self-consistent CTCs (those that don’t result in paradoxes) are postselected, and are called “P-CTCs.” As the scientists explain, this theory differs from the widely accepted quantum theory of CTCs proposed by physicist David Deutsch, in which a time traveler maintains self-consistency by traveling back into a different past than the one she remembers. In the P-CTC formulation, time travelers must travel to the past they remember.
Although postselecting CTCs may seem complicated, it can actually be investigated experimentally in laboratory simulations. By sending a “living” qubit (i.e., a bit in the state 1) a few billionths of a second back in time to try to “kill” its former self (i.e., flip to the state 0), the scientists show that only photons that don’t kill themselves can make the journey.
“P-CTCs work by projecting out part of the quantum state,” Lloyd said. “Another way of thinking about closed timelike curves is the following. In normal physics (i.e., without closed timelike curves), one specifies the state of a system in the past, and the laws of physics then tell how that state evolves in the future. In the presence of CTCs, this prescription breaks down: the state in the past plus the laws of physics no longer suffice to specify the state in the future. In addition, one has to supply final conditions as well as initial conditions. In our case, these final conditions specify the state when it enters the closed timelike curve in the future. These final conditions are what project out part of the quantum state as described above.
“Although one would need a real general relativistic CTC actually to impose final conditions, we can still simulate how such a CTC would work by setting up the initial condition, letting the system evolve, and then making a measurement. One of the possible outcomes of the measurement corresponds to the final condition that we would like to impose. Whenever that outcome occurs, then everything that has happened in the experiment up to that point is exactly the same as if the photon had gone backward in time and tried to kill its former self. So when we ‘post-select’ that outcome, the experiment is equivalent to a real CTC.”
To demonstrate, the scientists stored two qubits in a single photon, one of which represents the forward-traveling qubit, and one of which represents the backward-traveling qubit. The backward-traveling qubit can teleport through a quantum channel (CTC) only if the CTC ends by projecting the two entangled qubits into the same state.
After the qubits are entangled, their states are measured by two probe qubits. Next, a “quantum gun” is fired at the forward-traveling qubit, which, depending on the gun’s angle, may or may not rotate the qubit’s polarization. The qubits’ states are measured again to find out if the gun has flipped the forward-traveling qubit’s polarization or not. If both qubits are in the same state (00 or 11), then the gun has not flipped the polarization and the photon “survives.” If the qubits’ states are not equal (01 or 10), then the photon has “killed” its past self. The experiment’s results showed that the qubits’ states were almost always equal, showing that a qubit cannot kill its former self.
The scientists noted that their experiment cannot test whether an actual CTC obeys their new theory, since it is currently unknown whether CTCs exist at all. In the future, they plan to perform more tests to better understand time travel paradoxes.
“We want to perform the so-called `unproved theorem paradox' experiment, in which the time traveler sees an elegant proof of a theorem in a book,” Lloyd said. “She goes back in time and shows the proof to a mathematician, who includes the proof in the book that he is writing. Of course, the book is the same book from which the time traveler took the proof in the first place. Where did the proof come from? Our theory has a specific prediction/retrodiction for this paradox, which we wish to test experimentally.”

LONDON — A 350-year-old notebook which documents the trials of women convicted of witchcraft in England during the 17th century has been published online.
The notebook written by Nehemiah Wallington, an English Puritan, recounts the fate of women accused of having relationships with the devil at a time when England was embroiled in a bitter civil war.
The document reveals the details of a witchcraft trial held in Chelmsford in July 1645, when more than a hundred suspected witches were serving time in Essex and Suffolk according to his account.
"Divers (many) of them voluntarily and without any forcing or compulsion freely declare that they have made a covenant with the Devill," he wrote.
"Som Christians have been killed by their meanes," he added.
Of the 30 women on trial in Chelmsford, 14 were hanged.
Wallington also recounts the experiences of Rebecca West, a suspected witch who confessed to sleeping with the devil when she was tortured because "she found her selfe in such extremity of torture and amazement that she would not enure (endure) it againe for the world." Her confession spared her.
Carol Burrows, who managed the notebook's digitization, on Thursday told Reuters that Wallington's journal was important because of its connections to the civil war.
"It's a personal account and it tells us a lot about the time — they were troubled times," she said.
"It's in English and it's very easy to read so it's going to be of interest to the general public as well as scholars," she added.
The manuscript is one of Wallington's seven surviving notebooks. The woodturner wrote 50 journals about religion, the civil war and witchcraft trials during the course of his life.
A team at the University of Manchester's John Rylands Center for Heritage Imaging and Collection Care spent two weeks photographing the notebook kept at Tatton Hall in Cheshire so they could make it available online.

“It’s a nice piece of speculative work, but it is speculation,” says theoretical physicist Matt Visser of Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.
In an article posted online at arXiv.org February 25, physicist Vladimir Folomeev of the Institute of Physicotechnical Problems and Material Science in the Kyrgyz Republic and his colleagues suggest that pairs of stars could be joined by wormholes full of an exotic material known as “phantom matter.” Strictly hypothetical, the stuff has been proposed as a possible explanation for the accelerating expansion of the universe. Its exotic properties could also enable phantom matter to keep a wormhole propped open.
“I am pretty sure that once you admit exotic matter of some suitable kind, you can mathematically construct a star with a wormhole inside,” comments relativity theorist Dieter Brill of the University of Maryland in College Park.
Actually seeing one is another thing entirely. It’s possible, says Folomeev, that a stellar wormhole might generate signals that telescopes could record. In general, an ordinary star and one with a wormhole at its center would look the same to a distant observer. But if the wormhole has a strong enough influence, it might alter properties such as the mass or size of the stars in a nonstandard way. And if the wormhole is short, so that the two stars it links don’t lie far apart, an observer might see another unusual signpost — two closely spaced objects with nearly identical properties.
The team performed preliminary calculations suggesting that such a configuration might be stable against relatively simple disturbances to the system, supporting the possible existence of such a beast. However, the researchers acknowledge that their analysis isn’t complete.
“They seem to have done a serious analysis of the system, but they haven't claimed to have shown stability, as would be necessary to take the model seriously,” comments theoretical physicist Robert Wald of the University of Chicago.
In their paper, Folomeev and his colleagues suggest that the phantom matter in the wormhole would slosh around, generating astrophysical fireworks in the process. Oscillations in which different parts of the material move at different velocities could lead to collisions that might be energetic enough to produce gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions in the universe.
For now, this is just an idea that still must be confirmed by further calculations, says Folomeev.
Although it’s unclear whether or not the stellar wormhole model will collapse under scrutiny, says Brill, “I am generally in favor of calculating models that a priori seem far-fetched and wild.”
