Court convicts Israel ex-president Katsav of rape

JERUSALEM – Former President Moshe Katsav was convicted Thursday of raping an employee when he was a Cabinet minister, the most serious criminal charges ever brought against a high-ranking official in Israel and a case that shocked the nation.

Katsav, 65, likely faces from four to 16 years in prison for the crimes, which included two counts of raping an employee in 1998 when he was tourism minister and lesser counts of indecent acts and sexual harassment involving two other women who worked for him when he was president.

Katsav served as a minister in several right-wing Likud governments before he was elected president, a largely ceremonial post, in 2000. He has denied the rape charges, claiming he was a victim of a political witch hunt and suggesting he was targeted because he comes from Israel's Sephardic community. Sephardic Jews, of Middle Eastern origin, were for decades an underclass. Katsav was born in Iran and immigrated to Israel as a child.

A somber Katsav left the courtroom without commenting, surrounded by his legal team. He was ordered to surrender his passport while awaiting sentencing at a date that has not yet been set.

Katsav can appeal the verdict, but legal experts said Israel's Supreme Court was unlikely to overturn such a sweeping conviction. A presidential pardon is also highly unlikely because of the severity of the offenses. In his ruling, the judge said Katsav's defense was full of lies.

Katsav's son Boaz vowed his father would clear his name.

"We will continue to walk with our heads high and all the nation ... with God's help, will know that father, the eighth president of the state of Israel, is innocent," he said.

One of Katsav's lawyers, Avigdor Feldman, said he hopes his client will appeal, but he has not yet decided how to proceed. "I don't know how strong he is, how long he can continue this saga," Feldman said.

Katsav's case initially broke in 2006, when the then-president complained that a female employee was extorting him. The woman then went to police with her side of the story, detailing a series of sexual assaults and prompting other women to come forward with similar complaints.

According to the indictment, Katsav forced one woman to the floor of his office at the Tourism Ministry in 1998 and raped her. A second time that year, he summoned her to a Jerusalem hotel to go over paperwork and raped her on the bed in his room. The indictment alleged that Katsav tried to calm his victim by saying: "Relax, you'll enjoy it."

The indictment also alleged that he harassed two women during his term as president, embracing them against their will and making unwanted sexual comments.

On Katsav's 60th birthday in 2005, an assistant offered congratulations. He then hugged her at length, sniffing her neck, according to the indictment. She complained to police, and the indictment said Katsav later tried to persuade her to change her testimony, earning him an additional charge of obstruction of justice.

The conviction by a three-judge panel was widely praised as a victory for Israel's legal system and for women's rights.

"The court sent two clear and sharp messages: that everyone is equal and every woman has the full right to her body," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement. He called the verdict a sad day for Israel and its citizens.

The conviction capped a four-and-a-half year saga that stunned Israelis, both with its lurid details and bizarre twists and turns.

Katsav resigned in 2007, two weeks before his seven-year term expired, under a plea bargain that would have required him to admit to lesser charges of sexual misconduct. He was replaced by former prime minister Shimon Peres.

But in a dramatic reversal in April 2009, Katsav rejected the deal, which would have kept him out of jail, and vowed to clear his name in court.

Around that time, he held a bizarre news conference in which he lashed out at prosecutors and the media and denied any wrongdoing. His erratic behavior, in which he shook in anger, waved a computer disc that he said proved his innocence and screamed at reporters in the room, raised questions about his state of mind at the time.

The president in Israel is head of state but a largely ceremonial post, representing the country at ceremonies around the world. The post, filled by parliament, is traditionally given to an elder statesman as a reward for years of public service.

Katsav's case sparked a high-profile campaign by woman's right groups. On Thursday, hundreds of women stood outside the courtroom holding signs against Katsav and chanting: "The whole nation knows Katsav is a criminal."

Prosecutor Ronit Amiel said the verdict sent a strong message that victims of abuse of power should not keep silent.

"This day is not a happy day. It is not an easy day," she said.

Oren Gazal-Ayal, a professor of criminal justice at Haifa University, called the verdict a "badge of honor" for the country's legal system.

"I think we should be very proud of the Israeli justice system," he said. He said that while Katsav's crimes could carry a total of nearly 40 years in prison, under Israel's legal practices, sentences are served concurrently, so the maximum penalty would not exceed 16 years, the top penalty for the rape convictions.

The conviction was the latest in a series of high-profile cases against Israeli officials.

Former Israeli Finance Minister Avraham Hirchson is currently in prison after being convicted of embezzling more than $600,000 from a workers union. Former Justice Minister Haim Ramon was convicted in March 2007 of forcibly kissing a female soldier. Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is currently standing trial on corruption charges.

Former Atheist Aims to Reverse Negative Christian Stereotypes

Former Atheist Aims to Reverse Negative Christian Stereotypes

By Stephanie Samuel|Christian Post Reporter

Concerns about the face of Christianity have led a former atheist to form a non-profit to address the perceived hypocrisy of the church.

The Texas-based non-profit Changing the Face of Christianity Inc. is a direct response to non-believers who believe all Christians are intolerant, judgmental, hypocritical and homophobic, explained founder R. Brad White.

White said when he speaks to non-believers, skeptics and agnostics, they constantly label Christians with one of those four words. And those four labels are preventing backsliders from returning to the church, he added.

"Where if 75 percent of people were coming back in the past, 35 percent of people are coming back now," he pointed out.

With this, White created Changing the Face of Christianity to be a resource to reform those spreading the negative stereotype and to educate younger Christians from following in their footsteps.

White's insights are not new. Dan Kimball opines in the beginning of his book, They Like Jesus but Not the Church, that the emerging generation is spiritually open to talk about Jesus but are very disinterested in joining or being associated with church.

Kimball argues that pastors and ministers have lost touch with the younger generation by shutting out all other viewpoints and opinions but those of fellow Christians.

White has taken the argument a step further and states that church members and leaders have blatantly turned them off by "hating the sin and the sinner." He said this is most evident with homosexuality. Church leaders have mixed the Bible with politics to condemn homosexuals for their lifestyles, he lamented.

Though the sentiment may be based on the Bible, he noted, "The things we say and the way we say them turn them off."

According to a 2008 survey by LifeWay Research, 72 percent of unchurched Americans believe the church is full of hypocrites. An earlier LifeWay survey also revealed that 17 percent of those who formerly attended church left because they felt church members "seemed hypocritical" and "were judgmental of others.”

White believes Christianity is under attack from the inside with many believers paying little more than lip service to worship or living the Christian life.

“Defectors,” he said, “see superficial name-tag-only Christians who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. Non-Christians don't take them seriously, because they often don't follow their own teaching and preaching, which endangers the effectiveness of Christian evangelism efforts.”

Non-believers despise Christianity for all the wrong reasons, he lamented. "If non-believers hated us for truly living our faith and for being the best lovers of people the world has ever known, then our campaign would end. We would joyfully accept the criticism."

Changing the Face of Christianity is focused on launching an awareness and education campaign to help Christians reverse the negative stereotypes. The nonprofit is designed to “save the Christian religion from self-destruction, by helping Christians become more like Jesus Christ.”

Currently, the organization has a Bible study series that addresses topics such as "being judgmental," "being too political" and "having superficial faith" over a period of seven to eight weeks.

"Our approach is to teach what the Bible says about how to relate to non-believers," explained White.

Each lesson starts with a definition explaining why each title trait is negative and quotes material from atheists and other non-believers. There are several passages from the Bible meant to express God and/or Jesus' view and discussion questions.

Several churches in the Dallas area have begun using the study with young adults and have given the curriculum positive marks, according to White.

In four to five months, White hopes to expand the non-profit's efforts to include open discussions where Christian college students can come with their non-believing friends to talk openly about the faith.

He also wants to hold a retreat-like boot camp to delve deeper into issues that repel non-believers from the church.

Pastors and Sexual Sin

By Perry Noble|Christian Post Guest Columnist

Dear Pastor,

Sexual temptation IS going to HIT you…there’s nothing you can really do about it except deciding NOW to MAKE WAR and actually do what God commands of us in Nehemiah 4:14. (I wrote an article a while back entitled, “Keep your penis in your pants” that may be worth reading if you haven’t yet.)

My advice for those facing extreme sexual temptation…

#1 – Don’t buy the lie – you KNOW that satan is a lair (John 8:44) and that all he is offering you is a counterfeit. The “ideal” scenerio that you have in your mind in regards to that affair isn’t going to play out. You’ve seen it in SO MANY PEOPLE…don’t allow the enemy to convince you that you will be the exception.

#2 – Don’t use David as an excuse! If I hear it again I am going to throw up, “But David committed adultery and was called a man after God’s own heart.” Uh…yeah…but he REPENTED (which means he turned away from his sin instead of diving deeper into it and then screaming that people needed to show him grace!) He also had sexual sin in his family for generations, had a daughter raped and a son rebel against him. You are a FOOL if you think that your children are not going to suffer the consequences all because you were more passionate about an orgasm than Jesus.

#3 – GET HELP!!! If you are struggling with temptation…TELL SOMEBODY that you KNOW loves Jesus and loves you. ”But Perry, if I do it may get bad.” I would say if you DON’T it WILL get bad!!! Get some great men around you, confess the problem and then submit to their leadership.

#4 – Don’t blame others for your screw up – IF you choose not to listen to men who sincerely love you and want to try to protect you, your marriage and your church then don’t scream that they and the church turned their back on you when it was actually you that decided to pull your pants down and put things where they did not belong. You are not the victim once you decide to take this step…and sin has consequences. And that’s not being judgmental…its simply declaring the truth!

BTW…your “friends” aren’t the one who rally around you and affirm your sin…they are the ones that DO love you, do beg God for you to repent, do speak truth and do hurt for you more than you know! AND…the church didn’t turn its back on you when you sinned…you turned your back on her!!!

#5 – Don’t think your sexual sin is going to give you long term satisfaction – If you are a pastor and you have an affair with a lady in your church then you’ve GOT to understand that what attracted her to you (integrity, godly character) is now SHATTERED the minute you have sex with her…and sooner or later the blinders will come off of her eyes and she will see what you really are.

#6 – STOP expecting your wife to be impressed with you – bro, she’s seen you in the nude, there is NOTHING you could do to ever impress her!!! Seriously…she is NOT your servant but rather your opportunity to SERVE. If you want her to treat you like a rock star then you are on dangerous ground because you will hop in the sack with the first lady that does.

#7 – Set guard rails in place – Don’t travel alone…don’t ride in a car with a lady alone…don’t counsel a woman alone…JUST DON’T! We KNOW the areas we are tempted in…and for us to NOT establish some sort of boundaries is simply stupid! AND…if some people think that these kinds of things are extreme…it’s BECAUSE THEY ARE!!!

Can God forgive sexual sin? ABSOLUTELY! He is a God who loves unconditionally! BUT…pastors/church leaders…PLEASE HEAR ME ON THIS ONE…God’s Kingdom is TOO important for ANY one of us to sell out for momentary pleasure. We’ve GOT to fight…we’ve GOT to RUN FROM THIS TEMPTATION (I Corinthians 6:18-20!)

AND…one more thing, Jesus didn’t die on a cross so people that claim to follow Him could run around and screw whoever they want and then scream “grace” and “you’re being judgmental” when people point out the sin and plead for repentance!

We’ve GOT to fight through this men…we’ve GOT to ask for help and have integrity…our ministries and marriages AND THE CROSS are TOO IMPORTANT to sell out for sex…I’m praying Psalm 69:6 for all of us!

World (Updated) False Alarm: Bomb Suspected Outside U.S. Embassy to Vatican

ROME (AP) — Bomb squad teams were dispatched to the U.S. Embassy to the Vatican on Wednesday after it reported a suspicious package – but it was a false alarm, police said.

Embassies in Rome have been on high alert for a week after anarchists mailed package bombs to at least three embassies in the Italian capital. Two exploded, injuring the people who opened them.

There have also been more than a dozen false alarms in recent days as embassy staff comb through mail backlogs following the Christmas holidays.

Police at the site of the Embassy, overlooking the Circus Maximus field, said the latest report was a false alarm.

An Italian anarchist group calling itself the “Informal Anarchist Federation” has claimed responsibility for sending the bombs to the Chilean, Swiss and Greek embassies to Italy, saying it was responding to an appeal by Greek anarchists to step up attacks.

Greek anarchists sent 14 mail bombs to various embassies in Athens last month and called on anarchists worldwide to unite and organize a “revolutionary war.” Two men were arrested for the Athens bombings. In addition, more than a dozen members of the group that claimed responsibility, the Conspiracy Nuclei of Fire, are due to go on trial in Athens on Jan. 17.

Earlier Wednesday, two small bombs exploded in front of the northern Italian headquarters of a right-wing party, the Northern League, that is a member of Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s government.

Varese police inspector Carla Galluccio said no one was hurt. She said anarchists were believed responsible.

The anti-immigrant Northern League – whose founder Umberto Bossi lives down the block from party headquarters – once advocated secession for Italy’s prosperous north. It has been the target of previous attacks; Wednesday’s blasts shattered the office windows.

Crime Man Punches Boy on Flight for Refusing to Turn Off iPhone

BOISE, Idaho (The Blaze/AP) — Police say an Idaho man on a Southwest Airlines flight from Las Vegas punched a teenage passenger who refused to turn off his iPhone as the plane approached the Boise airport.

Officers arrested 68-year-old Russell E. Miller, of Boise, late Tuesday on suspicion of misdemeanor battery. KBOI reports the boy was punched hard enough to leave a mark.

Witnesses told police the 15-year-old was playing games and listening to music on his cell phone when flight attendants instructed passengers to turn off their electronic devices because the plane was landing.

Witnesses told police that when the teen didn’t respond, Miller got angry and punched the boy in the arm.

Jail records show Miller has been released from police custody, but he couldn’t be reached for comment. The two phone listings for Russell Miller in the Boise area were disconnected.

‘The Five Best Arguments Against Sharia in the United States’

Zombie:

I shouldn’t have to write this essay. But a judge in Oklahoma forced me into it.

Last month, 70% of the voters in Oklahoma approved State Question 755, which bans Sharia law (and international law) from being used in the state’s legal system. Almost immediately afterward, CAIR (the Council on American-Islamic Relations) sued to have the vote overturned, based on the bizarre claim that the measure is “unconstitutional.” U.S. District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange then sided with CAIR and issued an injunction preventing the measure from taking effect until all lawsuits against it are resolved. Since the suits will likely take years to play out, the new measure (and the will of the voters) will be stymied for the foreseeable future.

Those who oppose Sharia in the United States often argue their point by highlighting how misogynistic, backward, cruel and discriminatory Islamic law can be under most interpretations. And while all that may be true, it is the wrong argument to make. I get so frustrated watching pundits, politicians and bloggers making the weakest argument in what should be a slam-dunk debate that I’ve decided to write this brief outline of what I think should be the prioritized hierarchy of arguments against the use of Sharia in the United States.
