Fort Worth transit bans religious ads on buses

Associated Press logo small 2FORT WORTH, TX - City buses in Fort Worth, Texas, will no longer carry religious ads because of a furor sparked by an atheist group's ads that say, "Millions of Americans are good without God."

The Fort Worth Transportation Authority unanimously voted Wednesday to ban religious ads, a decision the atheist group's Terry McDonald hailed as a "secular victory."

Some ministers had been so upset about the ads -- especially during the Christmas season -- that they urged a boycott of public transportation and offered residents free rides. The ministers also threw their support behind several transit employees who say they were forced to take days off without pay for refusing to drive the buses carrying those ads.

One religious group recently hired a billboard truck to drive behind the buses with messages that read: "I still love you. - God" and "2.1 Billion People are Good With God."

Iranian Christians persecuted for rejecting Islam

Iranian Christians persecuted for rejecting Islam
Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow

IranA Christian pastor in Iran is facing the death penalty for renouncing Islam, even though he didn't practice any other faith before his conversion to Christianity.

Abe Ghaffari of Iranian Christians International (ICI) tells OneNewsNow Youcef Nadarkhani is only one person involved in the latest Iranian crackdown against Christians.

"He, along with some other believers in Shiraz, which is a city in southern Iran, have been detained, and two of these brothers are in real danger," Ghaffari reports. "One is Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, who is the one who is under [the] death sentence right now."

cross in cuffs persecutionThe status of the other Christian is unknown at this time, but both are charged with apostasy as it is illegal to leave Islam for another faith. While Iran is serious about barring conversions, the ICI spokesperson says such treatment is really a message to the public at large.

"They are trying to arrest...interrogate [and] torture [people], and in this case, they passed the death sentence," he explains. "So the ultimate aim is to intimidate the church and to intimidate any other Muslims who want to become followers of Jesus Christ."

But even though Christians face serious threats and repercussions for their beliefs, the underground church continues to grow Iran. So Ghaffari is urging people to take Pastor Nadarkhani's situation, along with the plight of all Christians in that country, to prayer.

Nutrition bill missing the mark: Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010

Crouse: Nutrition bill missing the mark
Chris Woodward - OneNewsNow

School lunch line, cafeteria foodA leading member of Concerned Women for America (CWA) says the child nutrition bill that was signed into law this week does amount to government overreach -- but even so, she adds, it does little to meet its goal of curbing child obesity.

Dr. Janice Crouse, senior fellow of CWA's Beverly LaHaye Institute, agrees with those who argue the "Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010" [PDF] is unfair and unnecessary -- specifically, the regulation of school menu items and vending machine snacks, and even USDA authority over bake sale goods. (See earlier article)

Still, Crouse points out that she does not think "any of us would say people ought not to do anything when kids are hungry."

Janice Crouse 2"I don't like the idea of schools providing meals [like] breakfast and so forth," she concedes, "but far too many of our children can't learn because they're not getting breakfast and they're not getting the rest that they need and so forth.

"We are in a vicious cycle," Crouse continues, "but even there, they're following the path of least resistance. [Government policies are] attacking the periphery and haven't really addressed the major problem."

In Crouse's opinion, the major problem is an American culture in which children are spending too much time watching television; and parents -- married or single -- are not providing the guidance their children need, including how to live a healthy lifestyle.

"And so we have [schools] full of children who are eating junk food and drinking sugary sodas and not really learning," she laments, the result being that "our teachers are ending up babysitting instead of providing instruction that our kids need in the academic subjects that they need to have."

The expert on family policy adds: "You can lay down as many laws and regulations as you want to, but that's not going to get at the root problem we are facing with children today."

* This year Amazing Facts Television (AFTV) went from just being an Internet channel to a 24/7 satellite broadcast across North America, and it has continued to grow in every way.

* Now 21 percent of the world’s population—that’s 1.4 billion people!—can now access Amazing Facts Bible Studies and sermons online in a language they understand.

“Thank you for your web broadcasts. On television and the web there are a thousand paths to destruction. … But through Amazing Facts streaming TV, I can fill my mind with God’s heavenly truths. Thank you!” —Mike

* The Most Important Questions (MIQ) youth series was a phenomenal success! More than 1,000 sites registered for the event, with young viewers from more than 60 nations. Thousands of questions about God came in to our MIQteens.com website. Now the videos and new lesson book continue to spread salvation to teens around the country.

“Wow! [MIQ is a] powerful and life-changing program! It is such a blessing. God bless Pastor Doug triplefold. He is really good with teenagers. Whenever I listen to his preaching, he inspires me. Keep up with the good work!” —Lomi

* More than 130 young men and women were trained in soul-winning through AFCOE programs in three different countries. These soul-winners are now fanning out across the country—and overseas—to share the gospel.

“Coming to AFCOE was an answer to my prayers! I look forward to winning souls as a result of my training.” —L.G.

* More than a billion people around the world now have access to Amazing Facts television and radio programs. No, I’m not exaggerating!

“I now know the truth after watching Amazing Facts! It is so eye opening and amazing! I watch Amazing Facts all the time! I cannot get enough! I joined the local church a couple of months ago.” —J.W.

Security Check

This is one of the major reasons I believe Jesus is coming very soon! Why? Because our Lord promised that when the gospel is preached in all the world, “the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). It’s happening now, friend!

I saw this firsthand last week when returning from an event in Los Angles.

I was passing through a crowded airport security area with my family. As our bags went through the X-ray machine one of the TSA officers looked at me and said, “Sir.” I thought to myself, “Oh no, do I have a security problem with my bag?” I was already concerned about being late for our flight.

He continued, “Are you on TV”? Now the other people in line were looking.

“Yes,” I said.

“Are you a preacher?”

I wondered how he recognized me, because I had on a baseball cap. Again I said “yes,” not sure what he would say next.

“I want you to know that you have an excellent program!” I thanked him and, trying not to hold up the line, I quickly gave him an Amazing Facts card with our website.

Walking to our departure gate, I praised the Lord. Not because someone recognized me, but because I knew it meant that people are hearing the message. Experiences like this are happening ever more frequently.

The truth is getting out!

No Retreat

Despite this incredible evangelistic progress, Amazing Facts is showing a financial shortfall for 2010. It saddens me to think that as we finalize the budget for 2011, we might need to scale back our broadcasts and evangelism plans.

This is no time to retreat! Let’s keep the truth flowing, now while the doors of global proclamation are still open. We will not always have this freedom to preach.

As you know, over these last 45 years, Amazing Facts has continued from month to month by faith, depending totally on what the Lord supplies through friends like you. Will you please pray about a generous year-end gift? It doesn’t really matter how “big” or “small” your gift is—$20, $50, $100, or $1,000 … or even $10,000—the impact you will have on a soul will be eternal.

By responding, you will also let us know that we can continue to make bold evangelistic plans for the coming year.

I hope that I can hear from you right away. Whatever the size of your gift, it will be gratefully received and put to immediate use in spreading the gospel. And remember, if you make a gift by December 31, it will count toward your 2010 tax deductions.

That’s a win-win-win in my book. A win for the Lord’s work, a win for your taxes, and a win for eternity.

God bless you and have a blessed New Year in the Lord!

Pastor Doug and Karen

* Please hold up our hands as we all work together in bringing life to the lost! Make a gift today ...

World offering to fund Haiti's Adventist churches, schools restoration

Adventist leaders in West-Central Africa granted offering time slot for urgent need

Next week's world mission offering of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, collected on Christmas day, will help fund the restoration of churches and schools in Haiti, the Caribbean island nation still recovering from a devastating earthquake earlier this year.

Known as the 13th Sabbath offering, the collection is one of four special offerings each year collected specifically to fund mission projects in the global denomination.

Haiti is still in a state of devastation since a powerful earthquake leveled most of the capital city of Port-au-Prince in January. More recently, an outbreak of cholera has claimed more than 2,000 lives and infected over 30,000.

"We want to affirm our commitment as Seventh-day Adventists to stand by [Haitians] through these trying times," said Israel Leito, president of the church's Inter-American Division, which oversees the church in Haiti. "There is still so much suffering, there are still so many people who are half destitute."

For months following the January earthquake, church members across the globe reached deep into their pockets to help restore the church and communities in Haiti. Church leaders in Inter-America hope that the 13th Sabbath Offering will demonstrate that same generosity and compassion in order to help reconstruct the more than 100 churches and dozens of schools either destroyed or damaged during the earthquake.

The offering will also go toward rebuilding the student dormitories at the Adventist University in Carrefour, Port-au-Prince, and will provide scholarships for 1,000 impoverished children, said Theart Saint Pierre, president of the Adventist Church in Haiti.

"This is going to be a very special offering for us, because it represents the entire world church giving ... for this still devastated situation in Haiti," Saint Pierre said.

It's that solidarity among church members worldwide that has sustained the church in Haiti this year, church leaders said. The 13th Sabbath offering this Christmas was originally assigned to help fund mission in West-Central Africa. But recognizing the urgency of Haiti's need, the church there offered to trade slots with Inter-America. Next year's 3rd quarter 13th Sabbath offering will go toward West-Central Africa.

The switch gives Haiti what is expected to be one of the biggest offerings collected during the year, Leito said. "We are thankful to the West-Central Africa Division, which sacrificed their scheduled ... offering this December," he said.

Organized for more than 100 years, the Adventist Church in Haiti is among the largest church territory in Inter-America, with about 350,000 members worshiping in 480 congregations. In addition, the church operates a hospital, a university and several radio stations.

Army Docs: Guantanamo Interrogators Wanted to Inflict 'More Physical Pain'

Amplify’d from gawker.com

Army Docs: Guantanamo Interrogators Wanted to Inflict 'More Physical Pain'It's not exactly news that U.S. personnel wantonly tortured detainees at Guantanamo Bay, but a newly released Army document shows an Army psychologist discussing the torture in unusually stark terms: "The only way to extract information was more physical pain."

The document, which was posted two weeks ago on the Department of Defense's Freedom of Information Act web site [pdf] but seems to have been noticed by only one blog, is the transcript of an interview with an unnamed member of a Guantanamo Bay "Behavioral Science Consultation Team." BSCTs—or "biscuits"—were teams of military psychologists tasked with helping interrogators understand, and more efficiently torture, detainees. The interview was conducted as part of a 2005 Army investigation into claims of abuse at Guantanamo known as the Schmidt-Furlow report [pdf], which found "no evidence of torture or inhumane treatment" in interrogations, despite recounting what the report calls the "degrading and abusive treatment" of the "20th hijacker" Mohammed al-Qahtani.

Army Docs: Guantanamo Interrogators Wanted to Inflict 'More Physical Pain'But according to the biscuit team member, who observed Qahtani's interrogation, an unnamed Defense Intelligence Agency civilian in charge of Qahtani's interrogation believed in the purposeful application of physical pain as an interrogation technique: "[Redacted] believed that the only way to extract information from 'difficult' detainees was with more physical or psychological pain."

Army Docs: Guantanamo Interrogators Wanted to Inflict 'More Physical Pain'

Qahtani's interrogation included forced stress positions, threats to his family, exposure to vicious dogs, forced nudity, sleep deprivation, and sexual humiliation by female interrogators.

The Schmidt-Furlow report arose after FBI interrogators objected to the Army's abusive tactics on Qahtani. According to the biscuit team member's interview, the FBI agents' initial complaints were met with mockery from the prison's commander, Gen. Geoffrey Miller, who responded to concerns about abuse with this chestnut: "We've got more teeth than they have ass." Miller was later detailed to Iraq, where he applied Guantanamo Bay's interrogation philosophy to Abu Ghraib.
Army Docs: Guantanamo Interrogators Wanted to Inflict 'More Physical Pain'
Asked by an investigator whether he or she believed abuse occurred at Guantanamo, the psychologist replied: "That is a hard question to answer. I do believe it is possible for some of the detainees to have some kind of long term or unintended difficulties because of the interrogation policies, but I did not see detainees being subjected to pointless cruelty." In other words, their cruelty had a point.
Army Docs: Guantanamo Interrogators Wanted to Inflict 'More Physical Pain'
The psychologist's open admission that Guantanamo interrogators sought to inflict pain—as opposed to "disorient" or "frighten" or any of the other rationalizations frequently offered by torture advocates who perversely claim that physical pain was a side-effect of their tactics—comports with the Kafka-esque definition of legitimate interrogation practices drawn by the Bush Administration, which found that only the intentional infliction of "pain accompanying serious physical injury, such as organ failure" constitutes torture. So intentionally inflicting run-of-the-mill pain doesn't count.

But the psychologist's claim that Guantanamo victims could suffer "long term or unintended difficulties because of the interrogation policies," oddly enough, does offer evidence that the Army tortured them even under the Bush Administration's impossible-to-meet definition. In the famous "organ failure" memo [pdf], former assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel Jay Bybee argued that for "purely mental pain or suffering to amount to torture" under the law, it must result in "significant psychological harm of significant duration" and be caused by "threats of imminent death" or torture directed at the detainee "or a third party."

Qahtani's interrogators deliberately inflicted "physical [and] psychological pain" on him. One way they did that was by threatening his family with physical harm. And an Army psychologist who witnessed this treatment concluded that it could result in "long term or unintended difficulties" (indeed, Qahtani was talking to "non-existent people" within weeks of the start of his interrogation). That all adds up to criminal torture even under Bybee's twisted logic.

One other great detail from the interview: "At the end of [Qahtani's] intensive interrogation effort, the commanding general of the camp, Gen. Miller, came down to the interrogation site at [redacted] to present awards to individuals involved with the execution of this particular interrogation." Cruelty with a point.

The Harrowing Tale of an Amtrak Train Stuck on the Rails for 10 HoursA train from Baltimore to Philadelphia stalled on the tracks for ten hours last night. With doors locked and electricity waning, passengers cried and fought for emergency rations. A local news reporter happened to be on board, and tweeted it.

D.C. reporter Stephen Tschida, of ABC affiliate WJLA-TV, was on the train as rations fell short, cold set in, and passengers swelled into an anarchic mob. As @ABC7Stephen, he chronicled it all, 140 characters at a time. Here is our brave correspondent's story, unabridged and arranged chronologically:
