Men fined over "indecent" fashion show makeup
KHARTOUM
KHARTOUM (Reuters) - A Sudanese court convicted seven men of indecency on Wednesday after police accused them of wearing makeup during a fashion show in Khartoum, their lawyer said.
The men, amateur models at the "Sudanese Next Top Model Fashion Show" in June, were arrested by the public order police, a body known for its crackdowns on perceived indecent dress and drinking in the Muslim north, one defendant told Reuters.
All seven were found guilty on Wednesday and each fined 200 Sudanese pounds ($80), as was a woman who faced the same charge for applying the makeup, said lawyer Nabil Adib.
"The court thought that they were indecently dressed ... The judge thought that wearing makeup could be offensive for men and allowing a woman to put makeup on men was against the law," said Adib.
The lawyer said he had argued in court that men, including religious preachers, regularly wore makeup for appearances on Sudan's state television station.
The defendants could have faced a maximum punishment of 40 lashes and imprisonment, said Adib.
Sudanese U.N. official Lubna Hussein was briefly jailed for wearing trousers in public after being found guilty for the same offence in 2009, a case that drew international criticism.

The WikiLeaks sex files, and the global hunt for Julian Assange is reported by the Daily Mail.
The arrestation and story about WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange and his two Swedish women gets more and more bizarre.
The female orgasm is regarded as a basic human right in Sweden.
If Julian Assange happened to be too fast in bed, he could be in serious trouble.
I guess the Swedish judge, however, will understand Assange originates from another culture, where maybe the female orgasm has a minor importance?
If one of the women, as rumors go, was "robbed" of her orgasm, Assange could face legal troubles in Sweden.
Because if sex is used only for the pleasure of the man, then it gets close to rape by definition in Sweden.
But she will have problems to prove her case and convince the judge.
Some women are also not that loud, but rather quiet.
As for the other woman, a politician representing the Swedish social democrats, she threw a party in Assange's honor at her flat after the "crime" and tweeted to her followers that she is with the "the world’s coolest and smartest people".
I don't understand why that woman would throw a party for someone she says is cool and smart, and after that demand he be put in prison during four years for rape, for something which happened a few days before that party was thrown to his honor.
I guess Julian Assange has a lot of powerful enemies.
It is anyway welcome that the female orgasm, as a basic human right for women, now is put in focus thanks to WikiLeaks.

York City to be paid from bid-rigging restitution
York City to be paid from bid-rigging restitution
Read more at www.ydr.comYork City is one of more than 100 Pennsylvania entities to share $4 million being paid in restitution by Bank of America as part of a settlement in a bid-rigging scheme, according to Attorney General Tom Corbett.
The national investigation has focused on the marketing and sale of municipal derivative investments used to reinvest the proceeds of tax-exempt bond offerings.
Investors were "victimized by complex schemes to rig bids and avoid competition, designed to generate additional profits for Bank of America and the other co-conspirators," Corbett said.
Bank of America and other banks conspired to enter investors into contracts that cost more or earned less than they should have received in a competitive marketplace, said Nils Frederiksen, deputy press secretary for the attorney general.
"In a nut shell, what happened was these municipalities invested money and thought they were getting a good return, but because it was being rigged, they were getting less interest than they should have and paying higher fees."
Bank of America didn't get all bids, as sometimes their role in the scheme was to bid higher so a co-conspirator could get the bid, and "the winners and losers were decided ahead of time," Frederiksen said.
The restitution amounts are still being calculated, he said.
Vatican to Promote Sunday Celebration Through World Meeting of Families
Vatican to Promote Sunday Celebration Through World Meeting of Families. · December 08, 2010
Though the next World Meeting of Families is not till 2012, Benedict XVI sent a letter of exhortation to the Pontifical Council for the Family well in advance of the event. Pope Benedict is asking families and parishes to prepare a year in advance for the Milan meeting.
“Family: Work and Celebration” is the theme for the 7th World Meeting of Families which openly suggests that Sunday rest is a key part of balanced family life.
“Work and celebration are intimately connected in the life of families… the pope said. “Holy Scripture tells us that the family, work and the feast day are gifts and blessings of God to help us to live a fully human existence…”
Benedict XVI also lamented the modern organization of work, “in… maximizing profit,” while the “concept of rest or celebration has become an “occasion for escape and consumption,” which contributes to the breakup of the family.
He also said this contributes to the spreading of an “individualistic lifestyle,” as opposed to a community oriented lifestyle.
The Pope also said it is necessary get balance between “the demands and the periods of work with those of the family and to recover the true meaning of the feast, specially on Sunday, the weekly Easter, the day of the Lord and the day of man, the day of the family, of the community and of solidarity.’”
The popes have consistently argued that Sunday rest is vital to balanced family life and proper cultural formation. The problem is that no matter how cogent the papal arguments are for Sunday observance, the Bible teaches that God’s holy Sabbath day is the day He has set aside for precisely the same reasons. The popes have, therefore, transferred the arguments for the Sabbath rest God gave at creation to Sunday.
“God made the world in six days and rested on the seventh, sanctifying this day, and setting it apart from all others as holy to Himself, to be observed by His people throughout their generations. But the man of sin, exalting himself above God, sitting in the temple of God, and showing himself to be God, thought to change times and laws. This power, thinking to prove that it was not only equal to God, but above God, changed the rest day, placing the first day of the week where the seventh should be. And the Protestant world has taken this child of the papacy to be regarded as sacred. In the Word of God this is called her fornication [Revelation 14:8].” Last Day Events, p. 123.

Cyber Retaliation: Allies of Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange Hack Websites
reuters.comRead more at www.hapblog.comWikiLeaks supporters apparently attacked the websites of the Swedish prosecutor and MasterCard in retaliation over moves made by them against Julian Assange, who has published secret U.S. diplomatic cables that have angered and embarrassed Washington.
The Swedish prosecution authority, whose arrest order for Assange over accusations of sexual offences led a British court to remand the 39-year-old WikiLeaks website founder in custody, said it had reported the online attack to police.
"Of course, it's easy to think it has a connection with WikiLeaks but we can't confirm that," prosecution authority web editor Fredrik Berg told Reuters Television.
Assange supporters also went for the corporate website of credit card firm MasterCard in apparent retaliation for its blocking of donations to the WikiLeaks website.
"We are glad to tell you that www.mastercard.com/ is down and it's confirmed!" said an entry on the Twitter feed of a group calling itself AnonOps, which says it fights against censorship and "copywrong."
"MasterCard is experiencing heavy traffic on its external corporate website - MasterCard.com - but this remains accessible," MasterCard said in a statement, adding consumer card transactions were not affected

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke on the House floor this evening in strong support of the DREAM Act of 2010, which passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 216 to 198. The DREAM Act is common-sense legislation to give hundreds of thousands of young people brought to our country without a choice the chance to earn legal status and contribute to our country’s well-being by serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or pursuing a college education.
Below are the Speaker’s remarks.
Speaker Pelosi on the DREAM Act:
“And so tonight we have an opportunity to identify with the aspirations of our founders. And we know that if we are going to have a better future for our country, it is important for us to recognize the children who are here...”
“The DREAM Act is about Pedro Ramirez, a student government president at California State University, Fresno. He was brought here when he was 3 years old and was unaware of his lack of citizenship until he was a senior in high school. In the midst of the controversy of his status, he reminded us: ‘The DREAM Act itself symbolizes what it is to be an American.’ It’s about equality; it’s about opportunity; it’s about the future.”
Read more at endrtimes.blogspot.com“I thank the gentleman for yielding and for giving us this opportunity this evening to come to the floor of the House on behalf of many children in America.
“It is one of those evenings when we can associate ourselves very directly with the aspirations of our Founding Fathers. How blessed we were at the beginning of our country, even before our country began, that these brave and courageous people stood up for independence for our country.
“And when they established our country, they designed a Great Seal of the country, and it said, ‘Novus ordo seclorum’ – ‘a new order for the ages.’ How confident they were, how optimistic they were. No country in the history of the world had ever had founders founding on a new principle of equality of people and freedom, separating themselves from a great military power by winning independence and saying this was about a new order for the future. And they could say that with confidence because they had a commitment to make the future better from one generation to the next.
“That became known as the American dream eventually. And people flocked to our shores to be part of the American dream, and when they came they brought their hopes, their aspirations, their determination, their optimism for a better future for their families and for the next generation. And in coming here, these newcomers, at that time a couple hundred years ago and to this day, by coming with that optimism and hope and commitment to a better future for the next generation, they made America more American.
“And so tonight we have an opportunity to identify with the aspirations of our founders. And we know that if we are going to have a better future for our country, it is important for us to recognize the children who are here. They’ve come from every continent in the world—from Europe, from Asia, from Australia, from Latin America. My colleague, Congresswoman Clarke talked about children coming from the Caribbean. A lot of attention is paid to those coming from Latin America, but they have come from all over the world.
“Many of them, to this day, do not know what their legal status is. Some find out in a most unfortunate door when ICE shows up at their door to say, ‘You weren’t born here’ because their parents may not have told them that. But their identity is all American. Some of them don’t even speak the language of the country of origin of their parents. So many of them come here with this great patriotism; their families come with this great patriotism.
“Many of these young people serve in the military, and so they strengthen our national security. Secretary Gates has said, ‘The DREAM Act represents an opportunity to expand the recruitment and readiness of our armed services.’ That’s what the Secretary of Defense said.
“We all know that the competitiveness of America depends on innovation and innovation begins in the classroom, and these young people have an array of skills and talent, whether they are in the military, whether they are in college, whether “they go to graduate school. And we know that many of them cannot reach their professional aspirations because that is when they bump into the fact that they are not fully documented.
“If you have ever been to a DREAM Act occasion, when young people come together and speak about their love for America, you will hear anthems of patriotism that, again, would make you so very proud in how it echoes what our founders had in mind.
“So we have an opportunity tonight to solve a problem, solve a problem for these young people, to help solve problems for our military and national security, to help solve problems about innovation and education and making our country stronger economically as well as militarily.
“This bill does not cost money. In fact, it sends money back to the Treasury — about over $2.5 billion. But, as studies show, it would be hundreds of billions of dollars that will be paid in taxes by these young people when they reach their full aspiration.
“The DREAM Act is about Pedro Ramirez, a student government president at California State University, Fresno. He was brought here when he was 3 years old and was unaware of his lack of citizenship until he was a senior in high school. In the midst of the controversy of his status, he reminded us: ‘The DREAM Act itself symbolizes what it is to be an American.’ It’s about equality; it’s about opportunity; it’s about the future.
“Young people like Pedro and so many others like him represent the best reasons to pass the DREAM Act. We always think in numbers; think of these individual young people and how they identify with America. They have no other identity in many cases. They want to participate in our nation’s future. They want to help build it. They want to use their degrees and their skills to help build something better for the next generation. And that’s what our founders had in mind when they said ‘Novus ordo seclorum’— a new order. It’s on the dollar bill, in case you have a dollar in your pocket you take out the great seal of the United States — ‘Novus ordo seclorum.’ With that confidence, later to be called ‘The American Dream.’
“We owe it to our founders and we owe it to these young people. We owe it to the future to cast your vote for a bill that makes America more American. And I want to thank Mr. Conyers, I want to thank Howard Berman, the author of this legislation, Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren also on the Judiciary Committee, certainly Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, Chair of the Hispanic Caucus, Congressman Xavier Becerra, part of the House Leadership, Luis Gutierrez, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, the entire Congressional Hispanic Caucus. But it is not confined to the Hispanic Caucus. As Representative Clarke has said, this is about kids from all over the world.
“And as Steny Hoyer said earlier, when the Prime Minister of Ireland came here and spoke, and when we attended the festivities each year surrounding the visit of the Taoiseach, they always talk about immigration, they always talk about this issue. This is one piece of it. And I know the gentleman got up and said he couldn’t be for this because it didn’t have a Motion to Recommit — this isn’t about a Motion to Recommit. This is about a commitment to our future. This is about a recognition of what these young people can mean for our country. And so I hope that that recognition will result in a very positive vote and I hope a bipartisan vote in support of making the future better for the next generation, which is the strength of our great country.
“Thank you all. And please vote ‘aye’ on the legislation.”.
