S. Korean Churches Urge Prayers After N. Korean Attack

By Nathan Black|Christian Post Reporter
korea
South Koreans watch smoke raising from South Korea's Yeonpyeong island near the border against North Korea Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010. North Korea fired artillery barrages onto the South Korean island near their disputed border Tuesday, setting buildings alight and prompting South Korea to return fire and scramble fighter jets.

Church leaders in South Korea have asked for prayers after North Korea fired dozens of artillery shells on Tuesday, killing two South Korean marines and injuring more than a dozen people.

It was the first direct artillery attack on South Korean territory since the 1953 Korean War Armistice Agreement, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.

The Christian Council of Korea's general secretary, the Rev. Kim Woon-Tae, said he couldn't help but feel shocked and worried after hearing the news.

He noted that it hasn't been long since a South Korean warship, the Cheonan, was sunk. It is suspected that North Korea torpedoed the warship that killed 46 sailors in March.

Some 100 artillery rounds were fired at Yeonpyeong Island Tuesday afternoon. The island is home to more than 1,600 residents, mostly fishermen and their families, and a marine corps base. South Korea's soldiers responded with more than 80 rounds of artillery. The exchange of fire lasted for about an hour.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said retaliation is needed, calling the provocation "an invasion of South Korean territory," as reported by Yonhap.

"I think enormous retaliation is going to be necessary to make North Korea incapable of provoking us again," he said, according to the South Korean news agency.

Stephen Bosworth, the U.S. special envoy on North Korean denuclearization, has urged restraint on both sides.

The United States condemned the attack and called on North Korea to halt "its belligerent action and to fully abide by the terms of the Armistice Agreement."

The 1953 agreement was intended to be a temporary measure of truce but has remained in place today with no peace treaty ever signed.

Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church in Southern California has urged prayers.

In an early tweet, he stated, "Our South Korean churches ask for prayer as North Korea fired artillery shells across the border injuring 4 soldiers."

Meanwhile, CCK's Kim said he's praying for stability, peace and cooperation on the Korean peninsula as tensions remain high.

CCK has a membership of 63 denominations representing 10 million Christians in South Korea.

Felt up or blown up? The psychology of the TSA, body scans and risk perception

Felt up or blown up? The psychology of the TSA, body scans and risk perception

By David Ropeik

The choice between felt up, or blown up seems like a no brainer. So does the choice between the low-dose radiation exposure of a back scatter x-ray exam at the airport, or getting on the plane and spending a couple hours high enough in a thinner atmosphere that you’ll get far more exposure to cosmic radiation. So why this fuss about new TSA security screening procedures? Why can’t people just get risk right?

Wrong question…because it presumes there is a "right" to get. Rationalists and scientists and worshippers of Enlightenment reason (and lots of self-professed Wise Men in the comment-o-sphere) may call the way we’re behaving irrational, but risk is not just a matter of the facts. It’s a matter of how those facts feel, how we interpret them. Facts are just ones and zeroes that mean nothing until we run them through the software of our interpretations. The TSA muddle is just the latest clarion example of how arrogantly irrational it is to presume that, when it comes to risk, rationality can rule the day. Let’s deconstruct the inner psychology of this example. There are lessons here.

We know, from the research of Paul Slovic and Baruch Fischhoff and others, that the less personalized a risk is – the more abstract it is – the less scary it is. It’s been more than nine years since we saw the faces and learned the names and family details of the nearly 3,000 victims of 9/11, victims we could relate to. People, like us. The risk of terrorism to air travel, while it remains very real, is now more of a possibility, an idea, not as concrete or human as it felt in 2001. And the shoe bomber and liquid bombers and underwear bomber and toner cartridge bomber all failed, in part because of our security efforts and in part because of their ineptness. Whatever the reason, the attempts didn’t scare us as much as the failures (no fresh images of actual human victims) reassured us.

We also know from the heuristics and biases research of Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky and others that the more readily "available" a risk is to our brains – the quicker and more powerfully something comes to mind – the more influence it has on how we feel about it. There is plenty in the news about the possibility of bad guys bombing planes, but the image of it actually happening is fortunately faded and dim (actually, of course, the 9/11 attackers crashed the planes), so the availability heuristic triggers less concern.

These two psychological factors help explain the findings of a Washington Post-ABC poll that found that only 30 percent of Americans are worried about terrorism against air travel, the lowest it’s been since 9/11.

Now let’s consider the psychology on the other side of this risk-risk tradeoff, the risk of being exposed to radiation, or groping, minimal risks compared to being blown out of the sky at 30,000 feet, but fraught with their own emotional/affective baggage. For many people radiation instantly evokes subconscious negative associations with bombs and nuclear power plant accidents and cancer. Cancer prompts more fear than many other risks, even greater risks like heart disease, in part because the greater the pain and suffering (dread) a risk can cause, the scarier it is likely to be. Radiation also feels scary because we can’t detect it, so we can’t protect ourselves, and "uncontrollability" makes any risk scarier.

In this case there is another psychological characteristic that makes the radiation feel more frightening, the facts about wavelength and sieverts notwithstanding. The scanner dose is imposed. Compare how some fliers feel about the x-ray dose to how they feel about the much greater dose of cosmic radiation they’ll get during the flight. The in-flight exposure is acceptable, because it’s voluntary. The psychological study of risk perception has found that an imposed risk almost always prompts more worry. (The x-ray and cosmic doses are both infinitesimal and as close to zero actual risk as you could ever hope to get. But they sure feel different!)

Wait, you say. Radiation-phobes can opt out, and go for what’s behind the blue curtain, a physical inspection so intimate that after it’s over the inspector doesn’t have to ask if that’s a pistol in your pocket or you’re glad to see him. Submit or don’t fly. Yeah, that feels like choice!

So let’s put this in the form of a ratio. From the perspective of the security experts and the government officials who have to think about risk assessment dispassionately at the societal level, it would be framed this way;

Risk A - fear of being planes being blown up vs. Risk B - fear of tiny doses of radiation or a bit of personal discomfort. A is clearly greater.

But to you and me as individuals, thinking more about ourselves than society at large, the psychology of risk perception ratio looks like…feels like, this;

Risk A - Complacency vs. Risk B –undetectable/uncontrollable, high dread, imposed. Framed this way, for some B is the bigger bogeyman.

What’s really remarkable, and reassuring, are the findings in the Washington Post-ABC poll that a solid majority of the flying public sees things like the dispassionate experts do. Grumbling perhaps, two thirds of us accept the need for the scans. Half accept the need for physical pat downs of those who decline the scan. Even without recent victims, we know that the risk of bad guys with bombs on planes remains clear and present.

In fact, as further proof of the whole argument that risk perception is not a purely fact-based coldly rational process, the survey respondents who were more afraid of the terrorist threat were more supportive of the tighter security than their complacent fellow travelers who were readier to tell the TSA people "Don’t Touch My Junk".

There are several important lessons here. First, government risk management policy makers need to understand and account for how people feel about a risk, and potential policy responses, as those policies are designed. After all, how those policies work depends in part about how people feel about them, as the TSA mess demonstrates. There is plenty of robust scientific evidence, from various fields, that can guide this thinking, which should be part of a more holistic approach to risk analysis.

Second, we need to move past the false dichotomy of the supposed battle between System One and System Two in risk perception…reason VERSUS emotion. It’s not one or the other. Our single system uses both, though the wiring and chemistry of the brain gives the edge to the feelings and emotions. We don’t function as perfect reasoning machines. Nor can we trust ourselves to always make the right calls when our reason is mixed with emotions and instincts not yet evolved to handle the more complex threats we face in the modern world. What we can do is accept that reason and gut reaction, cognition and intuition, are both part of how we perceive and respond to danger, and factor all of that into figuring out which policies make the most sense. That approach might have helped the TSA avoid some of the mess we’re now in.

Sure glad I’m not flying Wednesday!

New World Order: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

New World Order: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

A commentary by Don Hooser

Good News magazine writer, Bellingham, Washington

Confusion and controversy are intensifying regarding a future "New
World Order," commonly abbreviated as NWO. What does it mean? Would
it be good or bad for the world?

Let's first acknowledge an implied difference between a new
world order
and the "New World Order."

Hopes for a new world order

During the past century, many world leaders and others have expressed
their desire and hope for a better world with peaceful relations among
all the nations, and some have used the phrase a new world order.

For example, Woodrow Wilson and Winston Churchill spoke of their desires
for a new world order following World War I and World War II, respectively.

The popular usage of the phrase escalated when President George H.W.
Bush expressed in a half dozen speeches his hope for a new world order.
In his March 6, 1991, address to Congress, he said, "Now, we can
see a new world coming into view. A world in which there is the very
real prospect of a new world order... A world where the United
Nations, freed from cold war stalemate, is poised to fulfill the historic
vision of its founders."

Some were alarmed by President Bush's use of the term, but it
was largely seen in the context of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the
end of the cold war. Now, however, it seems many more Americans have
become quite alarmed after numerous remarks by President Barack Obama
indicating his desire to see a powerful "international order" to
solve the world's problems.

Influence of books on popular thought

British writer and futurist H.G.
Wells
published a nonfiction book in 1940 titled The
New World Order
. The book addressed the ideal of a world
without war in which law and order emanated from a world-governing body
and collectivist economy.

Other books have taken a negative view. Consider two popular dystopian
novel
s where a society promoted by the rulers as a utopia becomes,
in reality, a nightmare.

Brave New World is a 1932 novel by Aldous
Huxley
about life in London in A.D. 2540. It describes a totalitarian
state in which everyone is kept preoccupied and "happy" by
hypnotic recordings, propaganda, disinformation, materialistic consumption,
promiscuous sex and drugs.

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a 1949 novel by George
Orwell
picturing a world of pervasive government surveillance (by "Big
Brother") and incessant public mind
control
.

American televangelist Pat
Robertson
in his 1991 book The
New World Order
popularized the NWO theory that rich and
powerful people, banks, secret and semisecret societies, and other
groups conspire together to form the shadow government that controls
world events from behind the scenes, steering us constantly and covertly
in the direction of world government under the Antichrist.

Many other books and booklets about an NWO have been marketed as well.

Fears of the New World Order

Until about 1990, most people ignored the warnings of conspiracy theorists
about a coming NWO. But in addition to the other influences, the Internet
has given a powerful worldwide voice to all the conspiracy theorists
and subcultures.

And globalization is proceeding at an astonishing pace, having major
impacts on the nations and peoples of the world—impacts good and
bad.

Would a New World Order be good or bad? An NWO implies that all nations
surrender their sovereignty to a world-ruling government. For nearly
a century, the world has depended on the protection and leadership provided
by a strong, independent United States of America. Considering the corruption
that absolute power seems to always bring, a powerful world government
ruled by human beings would be a catastrophe for the United States and
all the world.

But that doesn't mean we need to research all the different conspiracy
theories out there. The real and important truth about the past, present
and future of the world is in the Bible!

The real conspiracy and the real solution

The power of human conspiracies is usually overemphasized. But throughout
history, there has been one superpowerful conspiracy by Satan the devil, "who
deceives the whole world" (Revelation 12:9).

Will an NWO happen? In a sense, the answer is that the world is going
to experience two! First, there will be a New World Order that
will be bad and ugly—a dystopia. Satan will mastermind the formation
of an international government and religious system referred to in the
Bible as "the beast" and "Babylon the great" (Revelation
17:5-7, 13). They will dominate "all the nations" and "the
kings of the earth" and "the merchants of the earth" (Revelation
18:1-4).

But Jesus Christ, the "King of Kings," will destroy that
order (disorder!) and will replace it with a worldwide utopia—the
glorious Kingdom of God (Revelation 19:11-16). He loves His human creation
and has our best interests at heart. His government will never be corrupted
but will produce a world where disease will be replaced with health,
hunger will be banished by abundance and everyone will be able to achieve
his or her full potential.

For more about what the Bible says about what's coming immediately
ahead of us and the good news on beyond, see "The
New World Disorder: Where Is It Taking Us?
" and The
Gospel of the Kingdom
. Turn to the pages of your Bible to understand
Christ's coming new world order that will be good and
beautiful
in every sense!

CONCLUSIVE PROOF FROM THE BIBLE THAT THE POPE IS THE ANTICHRIST

CONCLUSIVE PROOF

FROM THE BIBLE

THAT THE POPE

IS THE ANTICHRIST

The world is expecting the antichrist to come in the near
future. Will the antichrist announce his arrival when he gets
here? An essence of evil surrounds the term antichrist, and evil
rarely works openly. Instead, evil usually wears a facade of
righteousness to cover its real character in order more easily
to deceive.

THE ANTICHRIST HIDES BEHIND A FACADE.

What better facade than a “church”
to cover the antichrist’s real identity? The Bible tells
us that Satan, the devil, “deceives the whole world.”
(Revelation 12:9). Everyone in the world has been deceived by
the devil and by his agent, the antichrist.

ATROCITY

Hitler has been thoroughly condemned by the
world for murdering six million Jews during the Second World
War. This holocaust is frequently talked about even today, and
many books have been written on this subject condemning Hitler
and his associates.

THE GREATEST ATROCITY

During the Dark Ages the Catholic Church
slaughtered over 150 million Christians, and this atrocity is
never mentioned today! The world has almost completely forgotten
the many millions of people who were burned at the stake by the
papacy because they wanted to worship God according to the Bible.

The slaughter in Bosnia, Kosovo, Serbia,
and Croatia is a direct result of the Vatican’s involvement
in this area, but you will never hear about it because the Jesuit-controlled
news media not only refuse to mention it but they lie about the
situation to keep the papacy from being suspected of their true
involvement.

FROM HISTORY

A secular history book declares: “That
the Church of Rome has shed more innocent blood than any other
institution that has ever existed among mankind, will be questioned
by no Protestant who has a competent knowledge of history.”
— W. E. H. Lecky, History of the Rise and Influence of
the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe,
(reprint: New York:
Braziller, 1955), Vol. 2, pp. 40-45.

The papacy still claims that it has a right
to slaughter so-called “heretics,” as it did in the
Dark Ages.

“The Church of Rome says that she has
a right to punish with the confiscation of their goods, or the
penalty of death, those who differ in faith from the Pope.”
Charles Chiniquy, Fifty Years in the Church of Rome, The
Wickliffe Press, Protestant Truth Society, Wickliffe Avenue,
104 Hendon Lane, Finchley, London, N3., 1885, p. 376.

FROM BIBLE PROPHECY

Soon the papacy will once again attain enough
raw political power to repeat the atrocities of the Dark Ages.
Once again the Catholic Church will slaughter true Christians
for wanting to worship God according to the Bible. Regardless
of how impossible this seems to us today, once again the papacy
and its agents will plunge the world into another dark age.

A QUOTE FROM ABRAHAM LINCOLN ABOUT
THE CIVIL WAR

“This war would never have been possible
without the sinister influence of the Jesuits. We owe it to Popery
that we now see our land reddened with the blood of her noblest
sons. Though there were great differences of opinion between
the South and North, on the question of slavery, neither Jeff
Davis nor any one of the leading men of the Confederacy would
have dared to attack the North, had they not relied on the promise
of the Jesuits, that, under the mask of Democracy, the money
and the arms of the Roman Catholics, even the arms of France,
were at their disposal if they would attack us.” Charles
Chiniquy, Fifty Years in the Church of Rome, The Wickliffe
Press, Protestant Truth Society, Wickliffe Avenue, 104 Hendon
Lane, Finchley, London, N3., 1885, p. 388.

FROM CATHOLIC STATEMENTS

We are determined . . . to take possession
of the United States, and rule them; but we cannot do that without
acting secretly and with utmost wisdom. If our plans become known,
they will surely be defeated. — ibid, p. 373.

How sad will their awakening be, when, with
our out-numbering votes, we will turn them, for ever, from every
position of honor, power and profit! What will those hypocritical
and godless sons and daughters of the fanatical Pilgrim Fathers
say, when not a single judge, not a single teacher, not a single
policeman will be elected if he be not a devoted . . . Roman
Catholic? What will those so-called giants think of their matchless
shrewdness and ability, when not a single Senator or member of
Congress will be chosen, if he be not submitted to our holy father
the Pope? What a sad figure those Protestant Yankees will cut
when we will not only elect the President, but fill and command
the armies, man the navies, and hold the keys of the public treasury?

Then, yes! then, we will rule the United States, and lay them
at the feet of the Vicar of Jesus Christ [the pope], that he
may put an end to their godless system of education, and sweep
away those impious laws of liberty of conscience which are an
insult to God and man!

. . . The American people must be very blind indeed, if they
do not see that if they do nothing to prevent it, the day is
very near when the Jesuits will rule their country, from the
magnificent White House at Washington, to the humblest civil
and military department of this vast Republic. — ibid, p.
374.

The papacy has made colossal fools of untold millions of
people down through history, and it is still doing so today.

To find out just how devious and underhanded the papacy is,
read our page on The United States of
America.

Comparing the facts of history with many Bible verses, our
incredible books, Earth’s
Final Hours
, The Secret
Terrorists
,
and When
the United States Passes the National Sunday Law as Predicted

show conclusively that the pope is the
antichrist. After reading these books you will have no doubt
about what the papacy really is or what it intends to do to the
world in the near future. The complete texts of these books are

North Korean Artillery Attack on a Southern Island

North Korean Artillery Attack on a Southern Island

North Korean Artillery Attack on a Southern Island

North Korea and South Korea have reportedly traded artillery fire Nov. 23 across the disputed Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the Yellow Sea to the west of the peninsula. Though details are still sketchy, South Korean news reports indicate that around 2:30 p.m. local time, North Korean artillery shells began landing in the waters around Yeonpyeongdo, one of the South Korean-controlled islands just south of the NLL. North Korea has reportedly fired as many as 200 rounds, some of which struck the island, injuring at least 10 South Korean soldiers, damaging buildings and setting fire to a mountainside. South Korea responded by firing some 80 shells of its own toward North Korea, dispatching F-16 fighter jets to the area and raising the military alert to its highest level.

South Korean President Lee Myung Bak has convened an emergency Cabinet meeting, and Seoul is determining whether to evacuate South Koreans working at inter-Korean facilities in North Korea. The barrage from North Korea was continuing at 4 p.m. Military activity appears to be ongoing at this point, and the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff are meeting on the issue. No doubt North Korea’s leadership is also convening.

The North Korean attack comes as South Korea’s annual Hoguk military exercises are under way. The exercises — set to last nine days and including as many as 70,000 personnel from all branches of the South Korean military — span from sites in the Yellow Sea including Yeonpyeongdo to Seoul and other areas on the peninsula itself. The drills have focused in particular on cross-service coordination and cooperation in recent years.

North Korean Artillery Attack on a Southern Island

Low-level border skirmishes across the demilitarized zone and particularly the NLL are not uncommon even at the scale of artillery fire. In March, the South Korean naval corvette ChonAn was sunk in the area by what is broadly suspected to have been a North Korean torpedo, taking tensions to a peak in recent years. Nov. 22 also saw South Korean rhetoric about accepting the return of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons to the peninsula, though the United States said it has no plans at present to support such a redeployment.

While the South Korean reprisals — both artillery fire in response by self-propelled K-9 artillery and the scrambling of aircraft — thus far appear perfectly consistent with South Korean standard operating procedures, the sustained shelling of a populated island by North Korea would mark a deliberate and noteworthy escalation.

The incident comes amid renewed talk of North Korea’s nuclear program, including revelations of an active uranium-enrichment program, and amid rumors of North Korean preparations for another nuclear test. But North Korea also on Nov. 22 sent a list of delegates to Seoul for Red Cross talks with South Korea, a move reciprocated by the South, ahead of planned talks in South Korea set for Thursday. The timing of the North’s firing at Yeonpyeongdo, then, seems to contradict the other actions currently under way in inter-Korean relations. With the ongoing leadership transition in North Korea, there have been rumors of discontent within the military, and the current actions may reflect miscommunications or worse within the North’s command-and-control structure, or disagreements within the North Korean leadership.

THE ORIGIN OF EVIL

Amplify’d from www.pacinst.com

THE ORIGIN OF EVIL

To many minds, the origin of sin and the
reason for its existence are a source of great perplexity. They
see the work of evil, with its terrible results of woe and desolation,
and they question how all this can exist under the sovereignty
of One who is infinite in wisdom, in power, and in love. Here
is a mystery, of which they find no explanation. And in their
uncertainty and doubt, they are blinded to truths plainly revealed
in God’s Word, and essential to salvation. There are those
who, in their inquiries concerning the existence of sin, endeavor
to search into that which God has never revealed; hence they
find no solution of their difficulties; and such as are actuated
by a disposition to doubt and cavil, seize upon this as an excuse
for rejecting the words of Holy Writ. Others, however, fail of
a satisfactory understanding of the great problem of evil, from
the fact that tradition and misinterpretation have obscured the
teaching of the Bible concerning the character of God, the nature
of his government, and the principles of his dealing with sin.

Before the entrance of evil, there was peace
and joy throughout the universe. All was in perfect harmony with
the Creator’s will. Love for God was supreme, love for one
another impartial. Christ the Word, the only begotten of God,
was one with the eternal Father,--one in nature, in character,
and in purpose,--the only being in all the universe that could
enter into all the counsels and purposes of God. By Christ, the
Father wrought in the creation of all heavenly beings. “By
him were all things created, that are in Heaven, . . . whether
they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers;”
Colossians 1:16. and to Christ, equally with the Father, all
Heaven gave allegiance.

The law of love being the foundation of the
government of God, the happiness of all created beings depended
upon their perfect accord with its great principles of righteousness.
God desires from all his creatures the service of love,-- homage
that springs from an intelligent appreciation of his character.
He takes no pleasure in a forced allegiance, and to all he grants
freedom of will, that they may render him voluntary service.

But there was one that chose to pervert this
freedom. Sin originated with him, who, next to Christ, had been
most honored of God, and who stood highest in power and glory
among the inhabitants of Heaven. Before his fall, Lucifer was
first of the covering cherubs, holy and undefiled. “Thus
saith the Lord God: Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom,
and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God;
every precious stone was thy covering.” “Thou art the
anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so; thou wast
upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in
the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways
from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found
in thee.” Ezekiel 28:12-15, 17.

Lucifer might have remained in favor with
God, beloved and honored by all the angelic host, exercising
his noble powers to bless others and to glorify his Maker. But,
says the prophet, “Thine heart was lifted up because of
thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness.”
Ezekiel 28:12-15, 17. Little by little, Lucifer came to indulge
a desire for self-exaltation. “Thou hast set thine heart
as the heart of God.” “Thou hast said: . . . I will
exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will sit also upon
the mount of the congregation.” “I will ascend above
the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.”Ezekiel
28:6; Isaiah 14:13, 14. Instead of seeking to make God supreme
in the affections and allegiance of his creatures, it was Lucifer’s
endeavor to win their service and homage to himself. And, coveting
the honor which the infinite Father had bestowed upon his Son,
this prince of angels aspired to power which it was the prerogative
of Christ alone to wield.

All Heaven had rejoiced to reflect the Creator’s
glory and to show forth his praise. And while God was thus honored,
all had been peace and gladness. But a note of discord now marred
the celestial harmonies. The service and exaltation of self,
contrary to the Creator’s plan, awakened forebodings of
evil in minds to whom God’s glory was supreme. The heavenly
councils pleaded with Lucifer. The Son of God presented before
him the greatness, the goodness, and the justice of the Creator,
and the sacred, unchanging nature of his law. God himself had
established the order of Heaven; and in departing from it, Lucifer
would dishonor his Maker, and bring ruin upon himself. But the
warning, given in infinite love and mercy, only aroused a spirit
of resistance. Lucifer allowed jealousy of Christ to prevail,
and he became the more determined.

Pride in his own glory nourished the desire
for supremacy. The high honors conferred upon Lucifer were not
appreciated as the gift of God, and called forth no gratitude
to the Creator. He gloried in his brightness and exaltation,
and aspired to be equal with God. He was beloved and reverenced
by the heavenly host. Angels delighted to execute his commands,
and he was clothed with wisdom and glory above them all. Yet
the Son of God was the acknowledged sovereign of Heaven, one
in power and authority with the Father. In all the counsels of
God, Christ was a participant, while Lucifer was not permitted
thus to enter into the divine purposes. “Why,” questioned
this mighty angel, “should Christ have the supremacy? Why
is he thus honored above Lucifer?

Leaving his place in the immediate presence
of God, Lucifer went forth to diffuse the spirit of discontent
among the angels. Working with mysterious secrecy, and for a
time concealing his real purpose under an appearance of reverence
for God, he endeavored to excite dissatisfaction concerning the
laws that governed heavenly beings, intimating that they imposed
an unnecessary restraint. Since their natures were holy, he urged
that the angels should obey the dictates of their own will. He
sought to create sympathy for himself, by representing that God
had dealt unjustly with him in bestowing supreme honor upon Christ.
He claimed that in aspiring to greater power and honor he was
not aiming at self-exaltation, but was seeking to secure liberty
for all the inhabitants of Heaven, that by this means they might
attain to a higher state of existence.

God, in his great mercy, bore long with Lucifer.
He was not immediately degraded from his exalted station when
he first indulged the spirit of discontent, nor even when he
began to present his false claims before the loyal angels. Long
was he retained in Heaven. Again and again he was offered pardon,
on condition of repentance and submission. Such efforts as only
infinite love and wisdom could devise, were made to convince
him of his error. The spirit of discontent had never before been
known in Heaven. Lucifer himself did not at first see whither
he was drifting; he did not understand the real nature of his
feelings. But as his dissatisfaction was proved to be without
cause, Lucifer was convinced that he was in the wrong, that the
divine claims were just, and that he ought to acknowledge them
as such before all Heaven. Had he done this, he might have saved
himself and many angels. He had not at this time fully cast off
his allegiance to God. Though he had forsaken his position as
covering cherub, yet if he had been willing to return to God,
acknowledging the Creator’s wisdom, and satisfied to fill
the place appointed him in God’s great plan, he would have
been re-instated in his office. But pride forbade him to submit.
He persistently defended his own course, maintained that he had
no need of repentance, and fully committed himself, in the great
controversy, against his Maker.

All the powers of his master-mind were now
bent to the work of deception, to secure the sympathy of the
angels that had been under his command. Even the fact that Christ
had warned and counseled him, was perverted to serve his traitorous
designs. To those whose loving trust bound them most closely
to him, Satan had represented that he was wrongly judged, that
his position was not respected, and that his liberty was to be
abridged. From misrepresentation of the words of Christ, he passed
to prevarication and direct falsehood, accusing the Son of God
of a design to humiliate him before the inhabitants of Heaven.
He sought also to make a false issue between himself and the
loyal angels. All whom he could not subvert and bring fully to
his side, he accused of indifference to the interests of heavenly
beings. The very work which he himself was doing, he charged
upon those who remained true to God. And to sustain his charge
of God’s injustice toward him, he resorted to misrepresentation
of the words and acts of the Creator. It was his policy to perplex
the angels with subtle arguments concerning the purposes of God.
Everything that was simple he shrouded in mystery, and by artful
perversion cast doubt upon the plainest statements of Jehovah.
His high position, in such close connection with the divine administration,
gave greater force to his representations, and many were induced
to unite with him in rebellion against Heaven’s authority.

God in his wisdom permitted Satan to carry
forward his work, until the spirit of disaffection ripened into
active revolt. It was necessary for his plans to be fully developed,
that their true nature and tendency might be seen by all. Lucifer,
as the anointed cherub, had been highly exalted; he was greatly
loved by the heavenly beings, and his influence over them was
strong. God’s government included not only the inhabitants
of Heaven, but of all the worlds that he had created; and Satan
thought that if he could carry the angels of Heaven with him
in rebellion, he could carry also the other worlds. He had artfully
presented his side of the question, employing sophistry and fraud
to secure his objects. His power to deceive was very great, and
by disguising himself in a cloak of falsehood he had gained an
advantage. Even the loyal angels could not fully discern his
character, or see to what his work was leading.

Satan had been so highly honored, and all
his acts were so clothed with mystery, that it was difficult
to disclose to the angels the true nature of his work. Until
fully developed, sin would not appear the evil thing it was.
Heretofore it had had no place in the universe of God, and holy
beings had no conception of its nature and malignity. They could
not discern the terrible consequences that would result from
setting aside the divine law. Satan had, at first, concealed
his work under a specious profession of loyalty to God. He claimed
to be seeking to promote the honor of God, the stability of his
government, and the good of all the inhabitants of Heaven. While
instilling discontent into the minds of the angels under him,
he had artfully made it appear that he was seeking to remove
dissatisfaction. When he urged that changes be made in the order
and laws of God’s government, it was under the pretense
that these were necessary in order to preserve harmony in Heaven.

In his dealing with sin, God could employ
only righteousness and truth. Satan could use what God could
not--flattery and deceit. He had sought to falsify the word of
God, and had misrepresented his plan of government before the
angels, claiming that God was not just in laying laws and rules
upon the inhabitants of Heaven; that in requiring submission
and obedience from his creatures, he was seeking merely the exaltation
of himself. Therefore it must be demonstrated before the inhabitants
of Heaven as well as of all the worlds, that God’s government
was just, his law perfect. Satan had made it appear that he himself
was seeking to promote the good of the universe. The true character
of the usurper, and his real object, must be understood by all.
He must have time to manifest himself by his wicked works.

The discord which his own course had caused
in Heaven, Satan charged upon the law and government of God.
All evil he declared to be the result of the divine administration.
He claimed that it was his own object to improve upon the statutes
of Jehovah. Therefore it was necessary that he should demonstrate
the nature of his claims, and show the working out of his proposed
changes in the divine law. His own work must condemn him. Satan
had claimed from the first that he was not in rebellion. The
whole universe must see the deceiver unmasked.

Even when it was decided that he could no
longer remain in Heaven, infinite wisdom did not destroy Satan.
Since the service of love can alone be acceptable to God, the
allegiance of his creatures must rest upon a conviction of his
justice and benevolence. The inhabitants of Heaven and of other
worlds, being unprepared to comprehend the nature or consequences
of sin, could not then have seen the justice and mercy of God
in the destruction of Satan. Had he been immediately blotted
from existence, they would have served God from fear, rather
than from love. The influence of the deceiver would not have
been fully destroyed, nor would the spirit of rebellion have
been utterly eradicated. Evil must be permitted to come to maturity.
For the good of the entire universe through ceaseless ages, Satan
must more fully develop his principles, that his charges against
the divine government might be seen in their true light by all
created beings, that the justice and mercy of God and the immutability
of his law might forever be placed beyond all question.

Satan’s rebellion was to be a lesson
to the universe through all coming ages, a perpetual testimony
to the nature and terrible results of sin. The working out of
Satan’s rule, its effects upon both men and angels, would
show what must be the fruit of setting aside the divine authority.
It would testify that with the existence of God’s government
and his law is bound up the well-being of all the creatures he
has made. Thus the history of this terrible experiment of rebellion
was to be a perpetual safeguard to all holy intelligences, to
prevent them from being deceived as to the nature of transgression,
to save them from committing sin, and suffering its punishment.

To the very close of the controversy in Heaven,
the great usurper continued to justify himself. When it was announced
that with all his sympathizers he must be expelled from the abodes
of bliss, then the rebel leader boldly avowed his contempt for
the Creator’s law. He reiterated his claim that angels needed
no control, but should be left to follow their own will, which
would ever guide them right. He denounced the divine statutes
as a restriction of their liberty, and declared that it was his
purpose to secure the abolition of law; that, freed from this
restraint, the hosts of Heaven might enter upon a more exalted,
more glorious state of existence

With one accord, Satan and his host threw
the blame of their rebellion wholly upon Christ, declaring that
if they had not been reproved, they would never have rebelled.
Thus stubborn and defiant in their disloyalty, seeking vainly
to overthrow the government of God, yet blasphemously claiming
to be themselves the innocent victims of oppressive power, the
arch-rebel and all his sympathizers were at last banished from
Heaven.

The same spirit that prompted rebellion in
Heaven, still inspires rebellion on earth. Satan has continued
with men the same policy which he pursued with the angels. His
spirit now reigns in the children of disobedience. Like him they
seek to break down the restraints of the law of God, and promise
men liberty through transgression of its precepts. Reproof of
sin still arouses the spirit of hatred and resistance. When God’s
messages of warning are brought home to the conscience, Satan
leads men to justify themselves, and to seek the sympathy of
others in their course of sin. Instead of correcting their errors,
they excite indignation against the reprover, as if he were the
sole cause of difficulty. From the days of righteous Abel to
our own time, such is the spirit which has been displayed toward
those who dare to condemn sin.

By the same misrepresentation of the character
of God as he had practiced in Heaven, causing him to be regarded
as severe and tyrannical, Satan induced man to sin. And having
succeeded thus far, he declared that God’s unjust restrictions
had led to man’s fall, as they had led to his own rebellion.

But the Eternal One himself proclaims his
character: “The Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering,
and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands,
forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by
no means clear the guilty.” Exodus 34:6, 7.

In the banishment of Satan from Heaven, God
declared his justice, and maintained the honor of his throne.
But when man had sinned through yielding to the deceptions of
this apostate spirit, God gave an evidence of his love by yielding
up his only begotten Son to die for the fallen race. In the atonement
the character of God is revealed. The mighty argument of the
cross demonstrates to the whole universe that the course of sin
which Lucifer had chosen was in nowise chargeable upon the government
of God.

In the contest between Christ and Satan,
during the Saviour’s earthly ministry, the character of
the great deceiver was unmasked. Nothing could so effectually
have uprooted Satan from the affections of the heavenly angels
and the whole loyal universe as did his cruel warfare upon the
world’s Redeemer. The daring blasphemy of his demand that
Christ should pay him homage, his presumptuous boldness in bearing
him to the mountain summit and the pinnacle of the temple, the
malicious intent betrayed in urging him to cast himself down
from the dizzy height, the unsleeping malice that hunted him
from place to place, inspiring the hearts of priests and people
to reject his love, and at the last to cry, “Crucify him!
crucify him!”--all this excited the amazement and indignation
of the universe.

It was Satan that prompted the world’s
rejection of Christ. The prince of evil exerted all his power
and cunning to destroy Jesus; for he saw that the Saviour’s
mercy and love, his compassion and pitying tenderness, were representing
to the world the character of God. Satan contested every claim
put forth by the Son of God, and employed men as his agents to
fill the Saviour’s life with suffering and sorrow. The sophistry
and falsehood by which he had sought to hinder the work of Jesus,
the hatred manifested through the children of disobedience, his
cruel accusations against Him whose life was one of unexampled
goodness, all sprung from deep-seated revenge. The pent-up fires
of envy and malice, hatred and revenge, burst forth on Calvary
against the Son of God, while all Heaven gazed upon the scene
in silent horror.

When the great sacrifice had been consummated,
Christ ascended on high, refusing the adoration of angels until
he had presented the request, “I will that they also, whom
thou hast given me, be with me where I am.” John 17:24.
Then with inexpressible love and power came forth the answer
from the Father’s throne, “Let all the angels of God
worship him.”Hebrews 1:6. Not a stain rested upon Jesus.
His humiliation ended, his sacrifice completed, there was given
unto him a name that is above every name.

Now the guilt of Satan stood forth without
excuse. He had revealed his true character as a liar and a murderer.
It was seen that the very same spirit with which he ruled the
children of men, who were under his power, he would have manifested
had he been permitted to control the inhabitants of Heaven. He
had claimed that the transgression of God’s law would bring
liberty and exaltation; but it was seen to result in bondage
and degradation.

Satan’s lying charges against the divine
character and government appeared in their true light. He had
accused God of seeking merely the exaltation of himself in requiring
submission and obedience from his creatures, and had declared
that while the Creator exacted self-denial from all others, he
himself practiced no self-denial, made no sacrifice. Now it was
seen that for the salvation of a fallen and sinful race, the
Ruler of the universe had made the greatest sacrifice which love
could make; for “God was in Christ, reconciling the world
unto himself.” 2 Corinthians 5:19. It was seen, also, that
while Lucifer had opened the door for the entrance of sin, by
his desire for honor and supremacy, Christ had, in order to destroy
sin, humbled himself, and become obedient unto death.

God had manifested his abhorrence of the
principles of rebellion. All Heaven saw his justice revealed,
both in the condemnation of Satan and in the redemption of man.
Lucifer had declared that if the law of God was changeless, and
its penalty could not be remitted, every transgressor must be
forever debarred from the Creator’s favor. He had claimed
that the sinful race were placed beyond redemption, and were
therefore his rightful prey. But the death of Christ was an argument
in man’s behalf that could not be overthrown. The penalty
of the law fell upon him who was equal with God, and man was
free to accept the righteousness of Christ, and by a life of
penitence and humiliation to triumph, as the Son of God had triumphed,
over the power of Satan. Thus God is just, and yet the justifier
of all who believe in Jesus.

But it was not merely to accomplish the redemption
of man that Christ came to the earth to suffer and to die. He
came to “magnify the law” and to “make it honorable.”
Not alone that the inhabitants of this world might regard the
law as it should be regarded; but it was to demonstrate to all
the worlds of the universe that God’s law is unchangeable.
Could its claims have been set aside, then the Son of God need
not have yielded up his life to atone for its transgression.
The death of Christ proves it immutable. And the sacrifice to
which infinite love impelled the Father and the Son, that sinners
might be redeemed, demonstrates to all the universe--what nothing
less than this plan of atonement could have sufficed to do--that
justice and mercy are the foundation of the law and government
of God.

In the final execution of the Judgment it
will be seen that no cause for sin exists. When the Judge of
all the earth shall demand of Satan, “Why hast thou rebelled
against me, and robbed me of the subjects of my kingdom?”
the originator of evil can render no excuse. Every mouth will
be stopped, and all the hosts of rebellion will be speechless.

The cross of Calvary, while it declares the
law immutable, proclaims to the universe that the wages of sin
is death. In the Saviour’s expiring cry, “It is finished,”
the death-knell of Satan was rung. The great controversy which
had been so long in progress was then decided, and the final
eradication of evil was made certain. The Son of God passed through
the portals of the tomb, that “through death he might destroy
him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.” Hebrews
2:14. Lucifer’s desire for self-exaltation had led him to
say, “I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. . .
. I will be like the Most High.” God declares, “I will
bring thee to ashes upon the earth, . . . and never shalt thou
be any more.” Isaiah 14:13, 14; Ezekiel 28:18, 19. When
“the day cometh that shall burn as an oven,” “all
the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble; and
the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts,
that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.” Malachi
4. 1.

The whole universe will have become witnesses
to the nature and results of sin. And its utter extermination,
which in the beginning would have brought fear to angels and
dishonor to God, will now vindicate his love and establish his
honor before a universe of beings who delight to do his will,
and in whose heart is his law. Never will evil again be manifest.
Says the Word of God, “Affliction shall not rise up the
second time.” Nahum 1:9. The law of God, which Satan has
reproached as the yoke of bondage, will be honored as the law
of liberty. A tested and proved creation will never again be
turned from allegiance to Him whose character has been fully
manifested before them as fathomless love and infinite wisdom.

WHAT HAPPENS AT DEATH

An increasing number of people today believe
they have had an experience of coming back from death. They describe
death as being very pleasant.

But the Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes
9:5,6,10 that “the living know that they shall die: but
the dead know not any thing. . . . their love, and their hatred,
and their envy, is now perished. . . . Whatsoever thy hand findeth
to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device,
nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”

Also in Psalms 146:4 we see that in death,
“His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that
very day his thoughts perish.” Death is like a very deep
sleep. There are no thoughts or emotions, and without thoughts
or emotions there can be no consciousness. In death you are asleep
in the grave, without knowledge, without emotions, and without
consciousness.

There is a verse in the Bible that apparently
contradicts what we have just learned about death. Luke 23:42,43
describes Jesus’ assurance to the thief on the cross that
he would be saved. “And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember
me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him,
Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
These words were spoken on Friday afternoon just before Jesus
died. It appears that in this verse Jesus is telling the thief
that that day (Friday) he would be with the Lord in paradise;
thus, this verse seems to contradict the other verses showing
death to be like a very deep sleep, without consciousness.

However, consider John 20:17, where Jesus,
talking with Mary on Sunday morning after His resurrection, said,
“Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: But
go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father,
and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” So, on Sunday
morning Jesus made the statement that He had not yet been to
paradise, to God the Father. How, then, could He have told the
thief on the cross that he would be in paradise on Friday evening
with Jesus when He Himself would not be there? Where was Jesus
after He died on the cross? He was asleep in the grave, just
as the Scriptures say, until His resurrection on Sunday morning.
Jesus Himself said in Matthew 12:40 that He would remain in the
grave until his resurrection: “For as Jonas was three days
and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son
of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

Where, then, is the problem? Since Luke
23:43 is the verse that stands in contradiction with the other
verses we have considered, there must be some problem with this
one. The difficulty can be resolved easily. The original Greek
text was written without punctuation. Punctuation was added later
by the translators. The problem with this verse is the placement
of the comma before the words “To day.” If the comma
is placed after the words “To day,” the verse says
that Jesus on that day promised the thief that he would be with
Him in paradise after the resurrection. This verse would then
agree with the other verses of Scripture concerning death. It
should therefore read, “Verily I say unto thee today, that
thou shalt be with me in Paradise.” Jesus promised the thief
“today” a place in paradise after the resurrection.
Remember that the entire Bible must agree with itself; this is
one of the methods God has given us so that we might know when
we have these difficult verses interpreted correctly. Remember
also that the original text had no punctuation and that the problem
is with the comma, which was put there by a translator who did
not understand.

The people who think they have died and
come back were not really dead.

Death is not the end, however. There is
to be a resurrection from death. Everyone who has died will experience
a resurrection and will live again. John 5:28,29 tells us: “Marvel
not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are
in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they
that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they
that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.”
The resurrection predicted in the Bible will be totally unlike
the reported experiences of people who believe they have died
and come back.

If you are very tired at night when you
go to bed you fall asleep quickly, and when you awake in the
morning it seemed but an instant. You were not conscious of any
time passing during the night. Death is exactly like that. The
time between a person’s death and his resurrection will
seem but an instant to him, even if he had been dead for a thousand
years.

BUT, YOU SAY, WHO ARE ALL THOSE PEOPLE
WHO SUPPOSEDLY HAVE COME BACK FROM THE DEAD?

What happens at seances when people’s
loved ones appear to come back and talk with them? For the answer
to these questions we go to Revelation 12:9. “And the great
dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and
Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into
the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” The devil
and his evil angels (demons) are right here on the earth with
us.

When someone appears to come back from
the dead, it is not really the person who died, for we know the
dead are in their graves and completely unconscious. It is the
devil or one of his many evil angels masquerading as the person
who died. These devils have the ability to masquerade as anyone
they want. Remember that Satan masqueraded as a serpent in the
Garden of Eden to tempt Eve.

When people see visions of Mary, the mother
of Jesus, for instance, they are seeing the devil or one of his
demons masquerading as Mary. Mary is asleep in her grave awaiting
her resurrection, as we have just read from the Bible. Seeing
a vision like this can be overwhelmingly deceptive. We must realize
that God cannot lie to us. What the Bible says is the truth.
Mary is asleep in her grave and cannot appear to anyone.

When Hillary Clinton visits with Eleanore
Roosevelt she is visiting with a demon.

HOW DO THE PSYCHICS KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT
YOU?

They are in communication with the devil
or his demons. When you go to a psychic for help or for advice
you are going to the devil, and you are asking for trouble. You
are asking to be deceived.

The devil uses the movies and television
to deceive people about death. Many movies and television programs
depict people, who have died, coming back and talking with people
who are still living. The devil has been extremely successful
in his deception about death. Very few people know the truth.

The people who have been deluded by witchcraft
are obsessed with death. They believe all sorts of things about
death, that death is a higher plane of existence, or that they
come back re-incarnated as something or other. Rest assured that
these people will be asleep in their graves like everyone else
at death, and, unless they repent and get with Christ and become
Christians, they will be resurrected with the wicked at the end
of time. Read our page on How the World
Will End
to see how these people will be finally be destroyed
— forever.
