The priest has confessed to most of the charges and has been arrested after being in custody since July. He is accused of repeated sexual assault since 2004 on at least three boys aged between 9 and 15 in the northern town of Salzgitter, where he ran a parish.
In 2006, the Diocese of Hildesheim argued there were no sexual contact allegation when they learned that the priest slept with a boy in his bed one night. Catholic authorities came under fire for taking no action. The priest was ordered to stop seeing the boy after the boy's family complained.
Over the past 60 years, the Catholic church in Germany has offered financial compensation to hundreds of victims of sexual abuse and brutal corporal punishment by clergy.
