Jesuit Father Dominic Woo Jae-myung, member of the National Bioethics Committee in Korea, said the Catholic Church is concerned about the millions of embryos destroyed during IVF procedures.
“It is normal for a woman to produce one egg a month. But for the IVF, a woman has to artificially produce 10-20 eggs at once,” said Father Woo, moral theology professor at Jesuit-run Sogang University.
He added that the artificial procedure causes many side effects to the woman’s body and that the success rate of the IVF is just 18 percent.”
But women Catholics in Korea argued, saying the IVF gives hope to infertile couples. “Though the IVF is against the Church’s doctrine, it is also true that it is very helpful to couples who cannot conceive,” said Sister Clara Lee Young-ja, head of the Catholic Women’s Hotline.
