Interest in religious studies on the rise - City & Region - The Buffalo News

At Canisius, where religious studies and theology are taught within a Jesuit context, the students are more likely to be practicing Catholics.

Senior Hunter Dudkiewicz, for example, is a dual major in philosophy and religious studies and is exploring the possibility of becoming a Jesuit priest.

While Dudkiewicz has focused mostly on seminar courses exploring Catholicism, other students seem to gravitate to the broader survey courses that look at other faiths and practices.

"There's sort of a real interest in Eastern religions or even in aspects of the Catholic faith that might be underrepresented in parishes," he said.

Though curious, students typically have little knowledge of world religions when they start out at Fredonia, because high schools rarely address the topic, Tuggy said .
