Impending Food Crisis · October 20, 2010
“Fears of a global food crisis swept the world’s commodity markets as prices for staples such as corn, rice and wheat spiraled after the US government warned of ‘dramatically’ lower supplies. An especially hot summer in the US, droughts in countries including Russia and Brazil and heavy rain in Canada and Europe have hit many grain and oilseed crops this year. This has raised concern of a severe squeeze in food supplies and a repeat of the 2007-08 food crisis.”
The US Department of Agriculture, shocked traders by forecasting that the country’s corn farmers would harvest 4 per cent less than previously predicted, and said that corn stocks would reach their lowest levels in 14 years. It also cut estimates for wheat and soya production. It also predicted a “much tighter supply picture” for corn and barley.
“In Paris, European wheat prices rose 10 per cent, while the cost of other commodities including soya beans, sugar, cotton, barley and oats soared.” Russian and Ukraine have imposed restrictions on grain exports, and Middle East and North Africa importers have started to hoard supplies further tightening the markets.
Jesus predicted in Matthew 24:7 that at the end of time there would be famines which are the direct result of food shortages. Grain estimates this year were originally predicted to be abundant, but poor weather conditions changed the picture dramatically.
“In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hailstorms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power. He sweeps away the ripening harvest, and famine and distress follow… These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous. Destruction will be upon both man and beast. ‘The earth mourneth and fadeth away,’ ‘the haughty people . . . do languish. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.” Isaiah 24:4, 5. Great Controversy, p. 589-590.
