'Did we just kill a kid?': The moment drone operator who assassinated Afghans with the push of a button on a computer in the U.S. realized he had vaporized a child... and could not go on

By Helen Pow

A former U.S. drone operator has opened up about the toll of killing scores of innocent people by pressing a button from a control room in New Mexico.

Brandon Bryant, 27, from Missoula, Montana, spent six years in the Air Force operating Predator drones from inside a dark container.

But, after following orders to shoot and kill a child in Afghanistan, he knew he couldn't keep doing what he was doing and quit the military.

'I saw men, women and children die during that time,' he told Spiegel Online. 'I never thought I would kill that many people. In fact, I thought I couldn't kill anyone at all.'
Bryant joined the military by accident when he accompanied a friend who was enlisting in the army and heard that he could go to university for free if he signed up to the Air Force.

He excelled in his course and was assigned to an intelligence collection unit where he soon learned how to control the cameras and lasers on a drone, to analyse ground images, maps and weather data.

He was made a sensor operator, the equivalent of co-pilot, and at just 20 flew his first mission over Iraq - seated in the safety of a control room in Nevada.

But it began to take its toll immediately.

The first time he fired a missile, he killed two men instantly and cried on his way home.

'I felt disconnected from humanity for almost a week,' he said.

But it was an incident when a Predator drone was circling above a flat-roofed house made of mud in Afghanistan, more than 6,250 miles away, that really sticks in his mind.

The hut had a shed used to hold goats and when he received the order to fire, he pressed a button with his left hand and marked the roof with a laser.

The pilot sitting next to him pressed the trigger on a joystick, causing the drone to launch a Hellfire missile. There were 16 seconds left until impact.

'These moments are like in slow motion,' he told the website.

As the countdown reached seven seconds, there was no sign of anyone on the ground.

Bryant could still have diverted the missile at that point.

But when it was down to three seconds, a child suddenly walked around the corner.

The next thing he saw was a flash on the screen - the explosion. The building collapsed, and the child disappeared.

Bryant had a sick feeling in his stomach, he told the website.

'Did we just kill a kid?' he asked the pilot next to him.

'Yeah, I guess that was a kid,' the man replied.

Thoughts jotted in his diary on uneventful days clearly show the heavy burden his job was placing on him.

'On the battlefield there are no sides, just bloodshed. Total war. Every horror witnessed. I wish my eyes would rot,' he wrote on one occasion.

He began to shut himself off from his friends, and his girlfriend complained about his bad moods.

'I can't just switch and go back to normal life,' he said to her. He stopped sleeping and began to exercise instead.

One day he collapsed at work, doubling over and spitting blood. The doctor ordered him to stay home, and not to return to work until he could sleep more than four hours a night for two weeks in a row.

'Half a year later, I was back in the cockpit, flying drones,' Bryant told Spiegel Online.

But he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Now Bryant has left the military and is living back at home in Montana where he feels he is slowly recuperating.

'I haven't been dreaming in infrared for four months,' he said with a smile.

Draft Judge Napolitano for President

Although Ron Paul has yet to be specific about what's next for him, it is highly unlikely he will run for president again. So then, what's next for the Liberty Movement now that it won't have presidential candidate Ron Paul to hug anymore?
Ron Paul has been the inspiration and mentor of the Liberty Movement for many years, and he always will be.  But now he has stepped aside as the Liberty Movement’s candidate for President of the United States, and he has singled out one person who is capable up picking up his mantel, Judge Andrew Napolitano.

Judge Napolitano is the one person best suited to assume Dr. Paul's role as presidential contender in the Republican Party and to become the intellectual leader of the Liberty Movement.

Without a strong and principled leader at the helm, the Liberty Movement could founder, and worse, it could be hijacked by the Republican Party Establishment.
Judge Napolitano is the perfect Liberty Candidate: He is a man of principle, a truth teller who will plug his ears to the siren song of the Republican Establishment that would lure him onto the shoals of partisan accommodation. The Liberty movement cannot afford to run its own libertarian version of Mitt Romney or the Georges Bush in the false hope of an early, Pyrrhic victory.

We are dedicating as long as it takes to Draft Judge Napolitano to run for president.  The Liberty Movement needs The Judge as its new helmsman, and the country needs The Judge as its inspiration and its leader.  Judge Napolitano would be a candidate, perhaps the only candidate from within the Liberty Movement whom everyone in the Movement could rally round enthusiastically and who really could win the presidency on principle in 2016

There is no other person in the country as respected and popular within the Liberty Movement as Andrew Napolitano, a former jurist, constitutional scholar, New York Times best-selling author and TV celebrity. Napolitano can reach outside the confines of the Movement to inspire and capture the hearts and minds of Americans from every corner of life. Napolitano will carry forward the campaign for liberty with a revolutionary spirit as Ron Paul did.

Judge Napolitano initially may try to ignore the Liberty Movement’s call to run, and if he does, we must say, “Run Judge, run.” He may say “No,” and we must say, “Yes Judge, run.” He may resist again, and we must say, “Read our lips Judge, run; no other candidate will do.” -- Defend Liberty.  Draft The Judge.

I have said before, "Beyond The Man Is The Movement." But in politics, every movement must have a captain at the helm or it becomes rudderless. Right now, the Liberty Movement is without a skipper and essentially adrift without Ron Paul's firm hand on the tiller, which makes it ripe for a hostile takeover by the Republican political establishment. Don't forget V.I. Lenin's dictum, "The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves."

The Liberty Movement does not require a visionary helmsman to run recklessly before the wind in delusory hope of arriving early to presidential port in 2016. It must lead the country, which means not only being ahead of the country but also having the patience and perspicacity to wait upon the country to follow it-all in good time.

This is part of our initial unveiling of the formation of a committee to draft Napolitano- the person Ron Paul said he would choose as his running mate- to pick up Ron Paul's mantle and run as a Republican in 2016 for President of the United States. We need you to join this nation-wide petition drive to gather enough signatures to demonstrate a groundswell of support for Judge Napolitano's candidacy.

Eisenhower was drafted into the Presidency:
Successful presidential drafts are rare but not unheard of. The two most successful modern efforts to draft candidates for the presidency both occurred in the 1952 campaign. There had been an effort within both political parties to draft five-star general Dwight D. Eisenhower to run as a candidate for President as early as 1948 and then again in 1951. Eisenhower studiously ignored both efforts. He was, however, finally compelled to pay attention after Henry Cabot Lodge entered him in the 1952 New Hampshire Republican primary without the general's authorization. Eisenhower won the entire slate of Republican delegates in the New Hampshire primary without even campaigning. After the votes were in, Eisenhower told a reporter,
"Any American who would have that many other Americans pay him that compliment would be proud or he would not be an American."
Ike announced his candidacy for the presidency the next day. Having failed to capture Eisenhower as their own, the Democrats proceeded to draft Adlai Stevenson to run against him.

In addition to gathering signatures urging Judge Napolitano to run, we also intend to start building a campaign war chest and mobilizing ground troops to make sure Napolitano is positioned to get on the ballot in every state when he accepts the Liberty Movement's mandate to run.
The best thing about Judge Andrew Napolitano as a candidate for president is that he, like Ron Paul, will always tell the truth, no matter what, so help him God. No obfuscation, no weasel words, no mumbo jumbo and gobbledygook, no pandering to the Establishment- just the truth, the plain truth and nothing but the truth.

Judge to force girl to have 'Mark of the Beast'?

'Exactly what it talks about in the Book of Revelation'

A ruling is expected in days from a federal court in the case of a student in Texas facing possible expulsion over her decision to contest a mandatory “spychip” implemented by her school district, a system she and her family call “the mark of the Beast” spoken of in the Bible.

The Rutherford Institute today requested an injunction before U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia in San Antonio to prevent the disciplinary action planned by the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio.

The district’s program, called the “Student Locator Project,” is to boost public funding for the district by increasing student attendance rates.

The plan has some 4,200 students at John Jay High School and Jones Middle School wearing mandatory “SmartID” card badges embedded with an RFID tracking chip which allow school officials to track students at all times on campus.

Rutherford today said the request for a preliminary injunction was taken under advisement, and a ruling is expected within days.

A lower court’s temporary restraining order has been maintained against the district, and officials say it remains in effect until the judge issues his decision.

Andrea Hernandez, a 15-year-old sophomore in a science and engineering magnet school housed in John Jay High School, has refused to wear a school-mandated RFID tracking badge based on religious objections.

Both Andrea and her father, Steven Hernandez, testified they believed the electronic system was a sign of the Antichrist described in the New Testament book of Revelation.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, when asked by reporters who the Antichrist was, Steven Hernandez replied, “In this case, Northside is the Antichrist.”

In an interview with NPR, Steven Hernandez said his daughter has been adamant about not wearing the student tracking badges.

“And she says, ‘Daddy, I’m not going to do this.’ And I said, ‘Why aren’t you going to do this, honey?’ She says, ‘Dad, that’s exactly what it talks about in the book of Revelation that you were teaching us about taking the mark of the Beast. This is the exact same thing,’ ” he said.

Revelation 13:17 describes a time when “no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.”

Rutherford attorneys have alleged that the school’s attempts to penalize, discriminate and retaliate against Andrea violate her rights under Texas’ Religious Freedom Act and the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

“While we all want to ensure that our schools are safe, especially in the wake of this terrible shooting in Connecticut, these RFID tracking badges will do little to ensure student safety and, in fact, could potentially be manipulated in such a way as to make students even more vulnerable to attack by predators,” said John W. Whitehead, president of the Rutherford Institute.

“No matter how many ways school officials attempt to justify this program, the key here, as NISD officials have themselves acknowledged, is the fact that this program is about one thing only – making money for the schools at the expense of students’ constitutional rights and potentially their safety.”

School officials contend that a continuous monitoring and tracking of students will reduce absences, and they will be able to collect an additional $1.7 million in funding from the state by the time the monitoring program is installed in the district’s 112 schools.

But Rutherford said Hernandez has been penalized, discriminated against and retaliated against by school officials for objecting to being forced to participate in the RFID program.

“For Hernandez, a Christian, the badges pose a significant religious freedom concern in addition to the obvious privacy issues. Andrea’s religious objection derives from biblical teachings that equate accepting a personalized code – as a sign of submission to government authority and as a means of obtaining certain privileges from a secular ruling authority – with a form of idolatry or submission to a false god,” Rutherford reported.

Her attorneys previously said the school’s plan essentially put the student in an “electronic concentration camp.”

After her refusal to wear the tracking chip, Hernandez was warned in a letter that there would “be consequences.” Following through on its threats, the district sent Hernandez a letter informing her she would expelled effective Nov. 26.

Hernandez has drawn national attention to the district’s policy. Because of this, Whitehead said, the district is singling her out for punishment. Hernandez is not the only student who has refused to wear the chip. However, she is the only one to face expulsion.

“She has become a thorn in their side and has been singled out,” Whitehead said. “The easiest way to solve the problem of a thorn is to remove it. I have been working on these types of cases for over 40 years, and the government either tries to sweep these problems under the rug or remove the person causing the problem.”
