Propaganda Techniques

Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position. As opposed to impartially providing information, propaganda, in its most basic sense, presents information primarily to influence an audience. Propaganda often presents facts selectively (thus possibly lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or uses loaded messages to produce an emotional response rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the attitude toward the subject in the target audience to further a political agenda. Propaganda can be used as a form of political warfare. Techniques Common media for transmitting propaganda messages include news reports, government reports, books, leaflets, movies, radio, television, and posters. In the case of radio and television, propaganda can exist on news, current-affairs or talk-show segments, asadvertising or public-service announce "spots" or as long-running advertorials. Propaganda campaigns often follow a strategic transmission pattern to indoctrinate the target group. This may begin with a simple transmission such as a leaflet dropped from a plane or an advertisement. Generally these messages will contain directions on how to obtain more information, via a web site, hot line, radio program, etc. (as it is seen also for selling purposes among other goals). The strategy intends to initiate the individual from information recipient to information seeker through reinforcement, and then from information seeker to opinion leader through indoctrination. A number of techniques based in social psychological research are used to generate propaganda. Many of these same techniques can be found under logical fallacies, since propagandists use arguments that, while sometimes convincing, are not necessarily valid. Some time has been spent analyzing the means by which propaganda messages are transmitted. That work is important but it is clear that information dissemination strategies only become propaganda strategies when coupled with propagandistic messages. Identifying these messages is a necessary prerequisite to study the methods by which those messages are spread. Below are a number of techniques for generating propaganda: Ad hominem A Latin phrase which has come to mean attacking your opponent, as opposed to attacking their arguments. Ad nauseam This argument approach uses tireless repetition of an idea. An idea, especially a simple slogan, that is repeated enough times, may begin to be taken as the truth. This approach works best when media sources are limited and controlled by the propagator. Appeal to authority Appeals to authority cite prominent figures to support a position, idea, argument, or course of action. Appeal to fear Appeals to fear seek to build support by instilling anxieties and panic in the general population, for example, Joseph Goebbels exploited Theodore Kaufman's Germany Must Perish! to claim that the Allies sought the extermination of the German people. Appeal to prejudice Using loaded or emotive terms to attach value or moral goodness to believing the proposition. For example, the phrase: "Any hard-working taxpayer would have to agree that those who do not work, and who do not support the community do not deserve the community's support through social assistance." Bandwagon Bandwagon and "inevitable-victory" appeals attempt to persuade the target audience to join in and take the course of action that "everyone else is taking." Inevitable victory: invites those not already on the bandwagon to join those already on the road to certain victory. Those already or at least partially on the bandwagon are reassured that staying aboard is their best course of action. Join the crowd: This technique reinforces people's natural desire to be on the winning side. This technique is used to convince the audience that a program is an expression of an irresistible mass movement and that it is in their best interest to join. Black-and-White fallacy Presenting only two choices, with the product or idea being propagated as the better choice. (e.g., "You are either with us, or you are with the enemy") Beautiful people The type of propaganda that deals with famous people or depicts attractive, happy people. This makes other people think that if they buy a product or follow a certain ideology, they too will be happy or successful. (This is more used in advertising for products, instead of political reasons) Big Lie The repeated articulation of a complex of events that justify subsequent action. The descriptions of these events have elements of truth, and the "big lie" generalizations merge and eventually supplant the public's accurate perception of the underlying events. After World War I the German Stab in the back explanation of the cause of their defeat became a justification for Nazi re-militarization and revanchist aggression. Common man The "'plain folks'" or "common man" approach attempts to convince the audience that the propagandist's positions reflect the common sense of the people. It is designed to win the confidence of the audience by communicating in the common manner and style of the target audience. Propagandists use ordinary language and mannerisms (and clothe their message in face-to-face and audiovisual communications) in attempting to identify their point of view with that of the average person. For example, a propaganda leaflet may make an argument on a macroeconomic issue, such as unemployment insurance benefits, using everyday terms: "given that the country has little money during this recession, we should stop paying unemployment benefits to those who do not work, because that is like maxing out all your credit cards during a tight period, when you should be tightening your belt." Demonizing the enemy Making individuals from the opposing nation, from a different ethnic group, or those who support the opposing viewpoint appear to be subhuman (e.g., the Vietnam War-era term "gooks" for National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam aka Vietcong, (or 'VC') soldiers), worthless, or immoral, through suggestion or false accusations. Appeal to Authority This technique hopes to simplify the decision making process by using images and words to tell the audience exactly what actions to take, eliminating any other possible choices. Authority figures can be used to give the order, overlapping it with the Appeal to authority technique, but not necessarily. The Uncle Sam "I want you" image is an example of this technique.Direct order Euphoria The use of an event that generates euphoria or happiness, or using an appealing event to boost morale. Euphoria can be created by declaring a holiday, making luxury items available, or mounting a military parade with marching bands and patriotic messages. Disinformation The creation or deletion of information from public records, in the purpose of making a false record of an event or the actions of a person or organization, including outrightforgery of photographs, motion pictures, broadcasts, and sound recordings as well as printed documents. Flag-waving An attempt to justify an action on the grounds that doing so will make one more patriotic, or in some way benefit a group, country, or idea. The feeling of patriotism which this technique attempts to inspire may not necessarily diminish or entirely omit one's capability for rational examination of the matter in question. littering generalities Glittering generalities are emotionally appealing words applied to a product or idea, but which present no concrete argument or analysis. A famous example is the campaign slogan "Ford has a better idea!" Half-truth A half-truth is a deceptive statement which may come in several forms and includes some element of truth. The statement might be partly true, the statement may be totally true but only part of the whole truth, or it may utilize some deceptive element, such as improper punctuation, or double meaning, especially if the intent is to deceive, evade blame or misrepresent the truth. Intentional vagueness Generalities are deliberately vague so that the audience may supply its own interpretations. The intention is to move the audience by use of undefined phrases, without analyzing their validity or attempting to determine their reasonableness or application. The intent is to cause people to draw their own interpretations rather than simply being presented with an explicit idea. In trying to "figure out" the propaganda, the audience forgoes judgment of the ideas presented. Their validity, reasonableness and application may still be considered. Obtain disapproval or Reductio ad Hitlerum This technique is used to persuade a target audience to disapprove of an action or idea by suggesting that the idea is popular with groups hated, feared, or held in contempt by the target audience. Thus if a group which supports a certain policy is led to believe that undesirable, subversive, or contemptible people support the same policy, then the members of the group may decide to change their original position. This is a form of bad logic, where a is said to equal X, and b is said to equal X, therefore, a = b. Oversimplification Favorable generalities are used to provide simple answers to complex social, political, economic, or military problems. Quotes out of Context Selective editing of quotes which can change meanings. Political documentaries designed to discredit an opponent or an opposing political viewpoint often make use of this technique. Name-calling Propagandists use the name-calling technique to incite fears and arouse prejudices in their hearers in the intent that the bad names will cause hearers to construct a negative opinion about a group or set of beliefs or ideas that the propagandist would wish hearers to denounce. The method is intended to provoke conclusions about a matter apart from impartial examinations of facts. Name-calling is thus a substitute for rational, fact-based arguments against the an idea or belief on its own merits.[1] Rationalization Individuals or groups may use favorable generalities to rationalize questionable acts or beliefs. Vague and pleasant phrases are often used to justify such actions or beliefs. Red herring Presenting data or issues that, while compelling, are irrelevant to the argument at hand, and then claiming that it validates the argument.[2] Labeling A Euphemism is used when the propagandist attempts to increase the perceived quality, credibility, or credence of a particular ideal. A Dysphemism is used when the intent of the propagandist is to discredit, diminish the perceived quality, or hurt the perceived righteousness of the Mark. By creating a 'label' or 'category' or 'faction' of a population, it is much easier to make an example of these larger bodies, because they can uplift or defame the Mark without actually incurring legal-defamation. Example: "Liberal" is a dysphamsim intended to diminish the perceived credibility of a particular Mark. By taking a displeasing argument presented by a Mark, the propagandist can quote that person, and then attack 'liberals' in an attempt to both (1) create a political battle-ax of unaccountable aggression and (2) diminish the quality of the Mark. If the propagandist uses the label on too-many perceivably credible individuals, muddying up the word can be done by broadcasting bad-examples of 'liberals' into the media.Labeling can be thought of as a sub-set of Guilt by association, another Logical Fallacy. [3] Repetition This type of propaganda deals with a jingle or word that is repeated over and over again, thus getting it stuck in someones head, so they can buy the product. The "Repetition" method has been described previously.[4] Slogans A slogan is a brief, striking phrase that may include labeling and stereotyping. Although slogans may be enlisted to support reasoned ideas, in practice they tend to act only as emotional appeals. Opponents of the US's invasion and occupation of Iraq use the slogan "blood for oil" to suggest that the invasion and its human losses was done to access Iraq's oil riches. On the other hand, "hawks" who argue that the US should continue to fight in Iraq use the slogan "cut and run" to suggest that it would be cowardly or weak to withdraw from Iraq. Similarly, the names of the military campaigns, such as "enduring freedom" or "just cause", may also be regarded to be slogans, devised to influence people. Stereotyping or Name Calling or Labeling This technique attempts to arouse prejudices in an audience by labeling the object of the propaganda campaign as something the target audience fears, hates, loathes, or finds undesirable. For instance, reporting on a foreign country or social group may focus on the stereotypical traits that the reader expects, even though they are far from being representative of the whole country or group; such reporting often focuses on the anecdotal. Testimonial Testimonials are quotations, in or out of context, especially cited to support or reject a given policy, action, program, or personality. The reputation or the role (expert, respected public figure, etc.) of the individual giving the statement is exploited. The testimonial places the official sanction of a respected person or authority on a propaganda message. This is done in an effort to cause the target audience to identify itself with the authority or to accept the authority's opinions and beliefs as its own. See also,damaging quotation Transfer Also known as Association, this is a technique of projecting positive or negative qualities (praise or blame) of a person, entity, object, or value (an individual, group, organization, nation, patriotism, etc.) to another to make the second more acceptable or to discredit it. It evokes an emotional response, which stimulates the target to identify with recognized authorities. Often highly visual, this technique often utilizes symbols (for example, the Swastika used in Nazi Germany, originally a symbol for health and prosperity) superimposed over other visual images. An example of common use of this technique in America is for the President's image to be overlaid with a swastika by his opponents. Unstated assumption This technique is used when the propaganda concept that the propagandist intends to transmit would seem less credible if explicitly stated. The concept is instead repeatedly assumed or implied. Virtue words These are words in the value system of the target audience which tend to produce a positive image when attached to a person or issue. Peace, happiness, security, wise leadership, freedom, "The Truth", etc. are virtue words. In countries such as the U.S. religiosity is seen as a virtue, making associations to this quality affectively beneficial. The Sabbath Rest It would be a fearful thing to have been observing the Sabbath day all your life and find out that you never entered into the rest. There are people who say that we don’t need to keep the Sabbath day because that’s works. Well if you don’t enter into the rest it is works. But if you have entered into the rest, then it is not works, it’s rest. No one can conclude that resting is working because it’s not, it’s the exact opposite of it. Nevertheless there are people that know that fact and endeavour to observe Saturday or Sabbath and yet failed to enter into the rest. Therefore that is then works. The rest I want to talk about today is more than the mere physical rest than the Sabbath day because it is standard practice for Seventh Day Adventists to stop their daily labour on Friday after noon and observes the day of physical rest from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset but the rest that the Bible is talking about is far more than that. It includes a double application, a double blessing on the Sabbath day which is physical to testify to the spiritual. Therefore we need to fear lest we fail to enter into the rest. Hebrews 3:10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in [their] heart; and they have not known my ways. 3:11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.) 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left [us] of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard [it]. This scripture tells us that the gospel of the New Testament which was preached to the gentiles by the hand of Paul, was preached to the Israelites in the wilderness. There has been a great curse upon reading the Bible though the doctrine of dispensationalists where it is said there was one way of salvation in the Old Testament and there is a different way of salvation in the New Testament. But that is totally unscriptural for there is only one way as there’s only one name under heaven whereby men can be saved and that is Jesus Christ, belief in Jesus Christ. While there were different methods to show the faith between the Old and New Testament, faith in Jesus Christ in was the only way to Salvation. We see the Jewish people of the Old Testament as Sabbath keepers or they observed Saturday as their religious day. We have the testimony of scripture that they did not enter into the rest therefore they only kept Saturday. They did not keep the Sabbath because the Sabbath is the rest of the Law of thy God. So there is a purpose for us because we also profess to keep the Sabbath day. The Bible tells us “fear lest a promise being left you, you will come short come short of not come into entering into that rest.” We need to be careful that we do not fail to keep to the Sabbath as it should be kept. I hope through this message we can all come away from it with knowledge and tools of how to keep the Sabbath Holy. Where was the problem of not keeping the Sabbath rest? It was in their heart but there was an error, a fault. Hebrew 3:10 So I sware in my wrath, they shall not enter into my rest, take heed brethren lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.” What was the error inside the heart? It was the departing from the living God. Hebrews 3:11 But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Let us set the terminology for the heart. The heart is your brain, because “it is written that a man thinketh in his heart so is he”. Where do you think? In your brain, so the word heart is showing your brain and the delicate part of your brain. In our brain is an error and this error causes us to depart from the living God. How? Through the deceitfulness of sin. The error in the brain causes me to sin and that sin causes me depart from the living God. This is obvious in the creation story that not long after Adam and Eve sinned, what happened to their brain? It got an error, there was a fail mechanism in their brain and as that failure took place which came about because of sin what did they do when God came in the cool of the day? They ran away, they departed from the Living God. They were afraid and so right here we can see what the error is. The error of the human brain is fear, to be afraid and as man was afraid God made a promise and said “I’ll put enmity between you and the serpent” and so there was another fear that started, a fear of the serpent as well. Enmity simply means being an enemy. Would you be afraid if your enemy was in from of you? You may not appear to be afraid and you might look courageous and fight but that fight comes from your fear and so fear is a result of becoming enemies of having an enemy and that fear creating the enemy creates the wars and war is the height of stress, is that right? I don’t think that there is any more of a stressful experience in this world history other than wars, extremely stressful. In these wars is the height of human fear. The scripture says “Love casts out fear” because fear has torment and he that feareth is not made perfect in love. Fear equals stress, that’s the fear we’re talking about. Stress comes from a brain problem mental disease. That brain problem has it’s fruits in the way it acts. Have you seen children when they’re fearful? Maybe their parents have had a bad time in the home. What happens to the children in the school? Do they start playing up? They start doing all these things because of the stress that lies inside these little children. If you were to ask the child are you stressed? They wouldn’t be able to identify the issue with themselves but any psychologist will know that it is stress that causes the problem. This is error in the brain has come to every one of us, it is stress. I was reading some statistics some time ago and it said in a particular paper that 75% of people diagnosed with mental disorders are under the age of 25. My generation has an enormous amount of stress. The mental disorder and the complexities that come about while not everyone will admit that they’re stressed, the action shows that they are stressed. I have also read that there have been over one million pre-schoolers diagnosed as clinically depressed. That’s obviously over sometime but nevertheless one million pre-schoolers clinically depressed. No one is free from stress. This stress affects our nervous system in the brain. Jeremiah 17:1 The sin of Judah [is] written with a pen of iron, [and] with the point of a diamond: [it is] graven upon the table of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars. Sin, the error and the mental problem has been written on the heart which is the mind. It is in graven upon the horns of the altar which is the anterior and posterior horn of the nervous system which is part of the central nervous system. Our nerves are wrecked. Isaiah 1:4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. 1:5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. If your head is sick what does that mean? You have mental issues is what the Bible is saying. Isaiah 1:6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head [there is] no soundness in it; [but] wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. There is no healing in this world to solve the physiological problem our world faces. I also read by 2020 they believe that mental disease will be the leading cause of death in the world. It says from the sole of the foot, what’s in the souls of your feet? Nerves. Anyone who knows reflexology will say the whole of the body is in the soul of the foot and so connected to the top of your head. The scriptures are so clearly stating here that the problem that this whole world has regardless of what religion you belong to is stress. That’s the problem. Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 3:13 Their throat [is] an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps [is] under their lips: 3:14 Whose mouth [is] full of cursing and bitterness: Isn’t that what happens when you are stressed? Something goes wrong, the next minute you are just cursing something and you are bitter about something. Is that your experience? Romans 3:15 Their feet [are] swift to shed blood: 3:16 Destruction and misery [are] in their ways: 3:17 And the way of peace have they not known: The result of the eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil is manifest in every man’s experience. There is in his nature a bent to evil, a force which, unaided, he cannot resist. {Ed 29.1} Adam and Eve in disobeying God, being afraid and fearful ran for their lives. This is manifest in every man’s experience. Through sin the whole human organism is deranged, the mind is perverted, the imagination corrupted. Sin has degraded the faculties of the soul. Temptations from without find an answering chord within the heart, and the feet turn imperceptibly toward evil. {8T 312.2} This where we are at when run away because we are afraid or we’ll fight. Do you get stressed in your life? Do you get perplexed for things in your life? This is what we want to consider. Entering into the rest and what the Sabbath really means. It is the only faith in the whole world that offers complete mental restitution. The problem lies in our brain nerves. Solemn messages from Heaven cannot forcibly impress the heart that is not fortified against the indulgence of this degrading vice. The sensitive nerves of the brain have lost their healthy tone by morbid excitation to gratify an unnatural desire for sensual indulgence. The brain nerves which communicate with the entire system are the only medium through which Heaven can communicate to man and affect his inmost life. {CG 446.3} What’s the only way God can communicate you? Through your brain nerves and when you are stressed what happens to your nerves? They get cramped up. Whatever disturbs the circulation of the electric currents in the nervous system lessens the strength of the vital powers, and the result is a deadening of the sensibilities of the mind. In consideration of these facts, how important that ministers and people who profess godliness should stand forth clear and untainted from this soul-debasing vice! {CG 446.3} This quote is talking about masturbation. It’s wrong and let the world know that it is wrong according to scripture. But the text that I want to use out of this quote is the fact that our brain nerves are the only thing God can work with and anything, not just secret vice, not just self-abuse but any thing that disturbs the circulation of the electoral currents in the nervous system lessens the strength of the vital powers. That includes all entertainment today. It all deadens the brain. We sit in front T.V. and become brain dead as that’s what happens. When that happens can God speak to you? You need to flick that thing off and go out into nature and ask God to forgive you and help your brain nerves to recover. That issues lies with these nerves. This is where the Sabbath Rest needs to be applied. Isaiah 57:20 But the wicked [are] like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. Isaiah 57:21 [There is] no peace, saith my God, to the wicked. This the distinguishing fact between those who belong to God and those who do not. It lies in the ability to have peace and the ability to have your brain re-programmed so your nervous system is at rest. Other than that every other religion and every other thought in the world is wrong because peace is the thing that the wicked cannot have, it cannot rest. Like the troubled sea up and down, up and down, the nervous system feeling this way, that way. The hormones being affected by your nerves and getting all sorts of mire and dirt floating around your blood stream and creating all sorts of sensual desires or lusts or passions we feel like doing something. I feel like hitting this person or like feel like yelling at that person because they annoy me. What’s your life like at your home? Do you get annoyed at home? Do people irritate your nerves? A crying baby, does that just irritate you? Do you feel like making it get quiet? If that’s your case in your home and in your work you need to enter into the Sabbath rest. You can rest Saturday all you like but if this is the case then we have something to fear that we don’t enter in inter this rest. The wicked are like the troubled sea. The Fruit of Stress I don’t want to look at this in a very worldly situation. I want to look at it in the religious concepts of stress. In context of this next quote it is talking about the leaders at Battle Creek. If this applies to the Battle Creek leaders, how much more does it apply to us who also profess to keep the same day? That God who knows their spiritual condition declares: They have cherished evil and separated from Me. They have gone astray, every one of them. Not one is guiltless. They have forsaken Me, the Fountain of living waters, and have hewed out to them broken cisterns that can hold no water. Many have corrupted their ways before Me. Envy, hatred of one another, jealousy, evil surmising, emulation, strife, bitterness, the fruit that they bear. {5T 63.2} Here is the cherishing in the brain as sin that separates us from God creating the error in our heard and this error has it’s fruits has it ‘s results. Envy – when someone is advancing more than I am. Hatred of one another – when a person just annoys me. My life would be so much better if they were not there. Jealousy – when someone gets more attention than I do. Evil Surmising - thinking the worst of other people even when it is not true. Emulation I want to be the head elder, I want to be the deacon so we fight for positions in God’s church. That happens. Strife, bitterness – when someone rebukes you and you walk away feeling hurt and bitterness and you chew on it for the next 2 months. This is the fruit that they bare. This is Sabbath keeping religious people. We can bear the same thing, evil surmising, looking at things, picking at things. In the old testament there was a man who went out on the Sabbath day and started picking up sticks. Do you know what happened to him? He got killed and we can look around and pick up all the little faults, sticks and motes in everyone else’s eye and on the Sabbath day if we do that we will lost. It’s a result of stress. They have been watching for every fault to make trouble with. They neglect their own souls. They seldom see or feel their own faults, for they have had all they could do to watch the faults of others. A dress, a bonnet, an apron, takes their attention; they must talk with this one, and that one about the matter, and it is sufficient for them to dwell upon for weeks. All the religion a few poor souls have, is to watch the garments and acts of others, and find fault with them. Unless they reform, there will be no place in heaven for them, for with this spirit they would find fault with Jesus and angels. {2SG 287.1} This is a result of stress to observe all these things. This are some of the things that affect people with in churches and that’s what I wanted to consider as there are lots of other ones as well. But these ones affect God’s people. The question is, if I am stressed whether I know it or not, the Bible seams to say that we are all are stressed. How is it that I can enter into the rest? How is it that I can really be a true Sabbath keeper and receive the seal of the living God and be saved? This is a salvation issue and the wicked are like the troubled sea. One minute we are in a high the next minute we are in low. My question is, can Jesus still the storm? Can Jesus make this up and down of our electrical currents stop, can He do that? If He can, how does it happen? This is what we want to consider. There is another spiritual lesson in this miracle of the stilling of the tempest. Every man’s experience testifies to the truth of the words of Scripture, “The wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest. . . . There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” Isaiah 57:20, 21. Sin has destroyed our peace. While self is unsubdued, we can find no rest. The masterful passions of the heart no human power can control. We are as helpless here as were the disciples to quiet the raging storm. But He who spoke peace to the billows of Galilee has spoken the word of peace for every soul. However fierce the tempest, those who turn to Jesus with the cry, “Lord, save us,” will find deliverance. His grace, that reconciles the soul to God, quiets the strife of human passion, and in His love the heart is at rest. {DA 336.4} The truth of Christianity and the truth that Jesus Christ presented was the only solution to get rid of stress. The solution out of all the religions in the world is there is only one and that is reconciling with God. What created the error? Sin and what was the result? Separation from God. In that separation with God we received our stress. When we become reconciled with God our human passions are quietened and His love is in the heart. Where’s the heart? The brain nerves. They become at rest. This peace doesn’t come by the world. Jesus says my peace I give you not as the world gives. Do you know how the world gives peace? Take a break, have a coffee, just relax. Go on a holiday somewhere and get rid of the circumstances that are causing stress. That’s what the world is teaching today. Go to a Caribbean island and enjoy yourself with some coconut water. That’s what the world promotes as the release of our stress but Jesus gives peace not as the world gives. The stress release that Jesus will give you is not taking you away from the circumstance but giving you peace in the circumstance. No man can take that from you because the way the world does it is somewhat pointless because you can live on a Caribbean island all your life and get back to work, back to the grind and then the stress comes again. The peace that Jesus is offering which the Sabbath day is a sign of, the seventh day of the week. Many people say well Seventh Day Adventists are one day Christians. We need to be seven day Christians, not seventh day Christians. That mentality is missing the mark of what the truth of God is. If we would read our Bible the commandment isn’t for the seventh day, it says six days though shalt labour and on the seventh day to have a rest, there is a labour involved in order and we are going to talk about this because how do Jesus words become peace to me? At the end of the day have you been stressed and then you have heard some words of Jesus and are you still stressed. The next day are you still stressed? What’s going wrong? We want to find the answers to this because if we don’t find the answers to this then we’re in trouble as we will profess to keep the Sabbath day but we fail to enter into the rest of it and we will parish in the wilderness of this world. Just like ancient Israel did because of unbelief. He who spoke peace to the billows has spoken the word of peace to every soul. By God’s word He spake and it was done. In the story of Jesus in the tempest He stood up to the waves and the nature of the storm and said “Peace be still” and they obeyed Him. What is the difference between us and the storm? We read some of the words and the stress doesn’t leave us. God has spoken the word and yet to many Christians the word is powerless. Why? God’s word has been spoken to us to calm our nervous system to make us relaxed but that won’t affect if we haven’t applied the catalyst in order to make it affect us. The word is in store ready to go and all the kinetic energy is all there but now it needs something to activate it and this is the problem why people don’t find power in the word because they don’t activate it. Some have stormy tempers; but He who calmed the stormy Sea of Galilee will say to the troubled heart, “Peace, be still.” There is no nature so rebellious that Christ cannot subdue it, no temper so stormy that He cannot quell it, if the heart is surrendered to His keeping. {HP 17.4} There is no peak of stress of your nervous system that Christ can’t ease and subdue and pacify. To say this we have to set the catalyst off to get the power out. There is to be peace when Jesus come says unto me that all ye that are labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Hebrews 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left [us] of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard [it]. 4:3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh [day] on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. 4:5 And in this [place] again, If they shall enter into my rest. 4:6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: Do you see what the connection is here? There is a word spoken and that word is the words of God and those words were to be acted upon in order to enter into the rest and then it gives the example of creation that in six days God did His work. What was His work? Speaking and it said for six whole days. One day He said this, the next day He said that and the next day He said another thing and the next day He said that and so on. Until they came to the seventh day and what happened? Then there was rest. God rested Himself on the seventh day. Some people believe that the Sabbath day is for the Jews but perhaps some should read the scriptures. It is His rest. Whose rest? Gods rest, it’s Gods Sabbath not the Jews and Gods rest was given to mankind. The Sabbath was given to man. If any Christian can conclude that we are not to keep the Sabbath rest he is then concluding that we are never to have peace in our nervous system. If we never have peace then we have an error put there and sin is separation from God and we are lost. The Sabbath is a basis of salvation and the Seventh Day Adventist church in the 1950′s in the book “Questions of Doctrine” taught that the Sabbath was not a basis of salvation. In other words, other people who don’t keep the Sabbath in the light of the Sabbath can still be saved. However, the Bible says that if you have the light of the Sabbath and you do it not, that’s sin. If you don’t have the light of the Sabbath, God will wink at your ignorance but if you have the light and you don’t walk in the light then you are in darkness and light and darkness has no communion together. The creation story has a memorial day placed in it that testifies to the rest of God. When God created the world it was perfectly good and there was no nervous problems but now sin has entered and we are a nervous wreck but you know God still brought something from Eden for us today and that is the seventh day of creation which hasn’t been tainted. Do you believe that? All six days of creation has been tainted. The atmosphere, the water, the birds, the trees and the ground. Everything has been tainted but one thing of creation has not been tainted still stands today and that is Sabbath rest. We must enter into it. If we don’t enter into it is of no value to us. This rest is the rest of believing Gods words. We need to believe every word but there is a little problem with the Bible today because of the affective sin in our lives. These dear youth need so much to put into their character-building the very best material,—the love and fear of God and a knowledge of Christ. But many have not an intelligent understanding of the truth as it is in Jesus. The mind is feasted upon sensational stories. They live in an unreal world, and are unfitted for the practical duties of life. I have observed children allowed to come up in this way. {CTBH 123.1} Isn’t that today? We sit in front of movies that are absolutely sensational and as we sit there we are living in virtual world. The world doesn’t change that fast, life happens very slowly compared to the movies and we live in this world and our nerves become charged up and then we are unfitted to do the mundane things of life like wash the dishes, I don’t want to do that, I want to watch a movie. I have observed children allowed to come up in this way. Whether at home or abroad, they are either restless or dreamy. They are either restless or dreamy, and are unable to converse, save upon the most common-place subjects. The nobler faculties, those adapted to higher pursuits, have been degraded to the contemplation of trivial, or worse than trivial subjects, until their possessor has become satisfied with such topics, and scarcely has power to reach anything higher. Religious thought and conversation has become distasteful. The mental food for which he has acquired a relish, is contaminating in its effects, and leads to impure and sensual thoughts. {CTBH 123.1} They have their heads in the clouds and they don’t want to get down to the hard work of life because it’s a stress. Well if it’s a stress don’t stop your hard work, enter into the rest. That’s what we need to learn. ‘The Bible is boring, it’s black and white, it has no colour and it does not move. Because of that I don’t want to read the Bible anymore. I’d rather just watch someone tell me about the Bible. I don’t even want to turn the pages any more, it’s too hard. Plus the sermons go on for an hour or some times more than an hour. I can watch a 3 hour movie but to have an hour long sermon, no way that’s hard.’ This is the result of having the senses dulled whether it is by practice of sensual immorality or secret vice or whether it’s the media or whether, drugs, caffeine, tobacco or whatever it is that stimulates. When it comes back to the Bible our brain nerves aren’t appreciating it because only the brain nerves can communicate with heaven. What does Satan want to do? Satan wants to slap around everyone’s brain and he has done that very well. A Sabbath keeper, cannot be a Sabbath keeper if media and T.V and theatre is being practised. Do you see that? If you are watching television, theater and computer games and all the excitement and your brain nerves are becoming dull, can you enter into His rest which is to soothe your brain nerves? You can’t therefore you can’t keep the Sabbath and therefore you are not a Sabbath keeper. You’re a Saturday keeper. That’s the truth of the matter. There are Sunday keepers and Saturday keepers and then there are Sabbath day keepers. Only Sabbath keepers will enter into God’s rest which Heaven is the reality of. Isn’t that true? The Eden of God, the perfect works. This hard work of coming to the Bible and listening to the long sermons and reading the black and white pages of the Bible is what you have to do in order to enter into the rest. People say that’s hard work, well that’s what it says in Hebrews. Hebrews 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. In the margin it says; There remaineth therefore a keeping of the Sabbath to the people if God. Do you believe it was done away with at the cross? Not according it scripture. There remaineth a keeping of the Sabbath to the people of God. Hebrews 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his. The Sabbath is the only way you can have a normal works base religion, it’s the only way because if you have entered into the rest then you have stopped working and so if you haven’t entered into the Sabbath rest or you don’t even believe in the Sabbath and your faith is works. Hebrews 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. The scripture isn’t giving us a false hope of about achievement of getting calm nerves. It says that ye have to labour in order to get it. God’s words are all there, all powerful, all in store ready to go. But there is a labour that is needed on our part in order to activate the power of God’s word and to soothe our nerves we must do this. Do you notice what we have to do? It is labour, it is hard for the human soul to do this but we must do it and we can do it by the power of God. Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee. How do you unlock the words peace be still from Jesus treasure house? He said it and it has been applied to nature and it works. He’s the creator and now we need to unlock this power and we have to labour to enter into it. He keeps him in perfect peace who’s mind is stayed on thee. What do you have to do to your brain nerves? Have a coffee and go to the Caribbean island and relax? Your mind needs to be stayed on Him as your trust, as your dependence. How do we do this? Psalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. What was the heart again? We said right at the beginning – your brain. The word have I hid in my “brain”. What’s the result? That I might not, sin against thee. Now if you don’t sin against Him, do you have to run away from Him? No you will then be with Him and if you are with Him your brain your nerves system can be at rest. However can you hide His word in your brain if you don’t read it? Can you do that? Does it just pop on in just thinking of God sitting there and just looking, saying ” God, God, God, God, God, God, I’m thinking of Him but what’s going on? That’s not it. We have to take this book and labour because it’s hard. I know people who say” you know I read but I get a head ache from it, it’s really hard work and it’s just huge and I can’t get my head around it and so I don’t worry about it and the only day the Bible ever gets pulled out is on the Sabbath. That’s breaking the commandments of God because to labour we need to become familiar with the Bible. When do we labour? How many days? Six days we need to be doing this and then on the Sabbath we will have rest like you never believed. People use the Sabbath day and sure it’s okay to study the Bible on the Sabbath but that’s what is made for a true Sabbath keeper who is a Christian seven days a week. Six days though shalt labour. Yes the physical and we need to labour as that is good for us but you’ll notice that people that are on the dole never appreciate the Sabbath rest because they are resting all the time. But those who slug it out and that do the hard yard six days a week come to the Sabbath day and what a physical solace to the body it is. It is no different to the spiritual and we need to slug it out with the Bible and to study it out whether we feel like it or not we need to put the words in our minds to dwell upon them and look at the themes and as that affects your brain nerves and then after the labour you will have peace like you never have known in your whole life. Many profess to be on the Lord’s side, but they are not; the weight of all their actions is on Satan’s side. {CCh 185.2} If you were to get a daily tally of the mental activity of your day and put in the hours you spend thinking on different things what would be the greatest? Do you think your T.V. watching would be the highest number? Some people say you can’t think about God all the time, you have to get some work done. Absolutely true you have to get work done but you can bring God into your work, can’t you? There’s a scripture that says if we look after His business He will look after our business. God is interested in our daily work that we do. We can bring Him in and we can be working and we can still be connected with God. That sort of time you can tally as time with God. You don’t have to be sitting and opening the Bible ever hour of the day but your mind can be stayed upon Him but it takes effort because our minds keep running away and hiding in the bushes just like Adam and Eve. By what means shall we determine whose side we are on? Who has the heart? {CCh 185.2} What was the heart/brain? Who has your brain nerves? Hollywood?- With whom are our thoughts? {CCh 185.2} Making a million dollars, your girlfriend. What are you thinking about?- Upon whom do we love to converse? {CCh 185.2} Who do you like to talk about? Politics? Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Who has our warmest affections and our best energies? {CCh 185.2} Not just the dreary energies at the end of the day? Who has your best energies? If we are on the Lord’s side, our thoughts are with Him, and our sweetest thoughts are of Him. We have no friendship with the world; we have consecrated all that we have and are to Him. {CCh 185.2} Isn’t that it? Surrender? Everything I have, I’m going to live by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth and I’m going to surrender and that is the catalyst to bring this peace that no circumstance can remove. We long to bear His image, breathe His Spirit, do His will, and please Him in all things. {CCh 185.2} This is the labour that we need to do we need to take the Bible and use the promises. Hebrews 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left [us] of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. This has been given for the mending of our mental disorders. Psychologists can’t mend people mentally. I know psychologists that have to go to psychologists but the Bible is the only way not to argue the Bible and not to prove doctrines to everybody else but to apply to your own soul and to do it day after day whether you feel anything, no change, keep doing it, keep knowing the Bible, keep claiming the promises and you will enter into His rest. It will happen as it is said to happen. I would like to close with two Bible texts. 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Aden and Eve sinned and the fear and stress came. God hasn’t given us a spirit if stress or fear but of power and of love. We become normal. So what’s normal? The standard of seeing if someone has a mental disease is they have to compare it with some standard to know what a mental disease is. The problem is that even those who diagnose mental diseases have mental disease but they would not diagnose it because they have it. God has given us a sound mind. There is going to be at the end living saints just before Jesus comes 144,000 with a sound mind. There will only be 144,000 on this planet without a mental disorder. That’s normal. Why? Do I know it’s normal? Normal is the manufactures settings and what Eden was made for Adam and Eve was normal until sin came. The people at the end will be normal human beings that will have a sound mind and the sound mind is activated in Philippians. Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. How can you be thankful unless you know the promises of God? Here is the communication and what I want to get into our heads really clearly. He will keep your heart and your brain and mind. God says in verse 7 your brain and your brain is a double emphasis of what God will keep in this world. Our circumstances won’t change. If anything they will get more stress full but the peace that God gives is not based on circumstance and therefore you and I can find and must find peace in our current situation for if we are overwhelmed in the land of peace how will you go in the selling of Jordan? The Saviour’s life on this earth, though lived in the midst of conflict, was a life of peace. . . . “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you,” He said. . . . He left them the peace which had been His during His life on the earth, which had been with Him amid poverty, buffeting, and persecution, and which was to be with Him during His agony in Gethsemane and on the cruel cross. {HP 249.2} No storm of satanic wrath could disturb the calm of that perfect communion with God. And He says to us, “My peace I give unto you.” {HP 249.3} Those who take Christ at His word and surrender their souls to His keeping, their lives to His ordering, will find peace and quietude. Nothing of the world can make them sad when Jesus makes them glad by His presence. In perfect acquiescence there is perfect rest. The Lord says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” (Isaiah 26:3). {HP 249.4} It is the love of self that destroys our peace. While self is alive we stand ready continually to guard it from mortification and insult; but when self is dead, and our life hid with Christ in God, we shall not take neglects or slights to heart. . . . {HP 249.5} When we receive Christ into the soul as an abiding guest, the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, will keep our hearts and minds. There is no other ground of peace than this. The grace of Christ, received into the heart, subdues enmity; it allays strife and fills the soul with love. He who is at peace with God and his fellow men cannot be made miserable. . . . The heart that is in harmony with God is a partaker of the peace of heaven and will diffuse its blessed influence all around. {HP 249.6} The saviour came to show man how he may overcome all the temptation of sin Christ met with the word of God by trusting in Gods promises. He received to power to obey Gods commandments and the tempter could gain no advantage. Do you want to be a Seventh Day Adventist? Do you want to keep the y Sabbath day holy and keep Gods mark, the seal? Then study your Bible and become familiar with it. Put it dear to your heart not to prove to your neighbors but to make it your own and keep at that day and night and you will become a Sabbath keeper. More than 30,000 protesters marched to the Greek parliament

Police in Athens have fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators hurling petrol bombs and stones as a 24-hour general strike grips Greece.

The violence erupted during a rally by more than 30,000 angry workers near the Greek parliament. They object to the government’s far-reaching budget cuts.

The strike paralysed public transport. More than 100 flights were cancelled.

Many schools are closed and hospitals have reduced services. Small businesses have joined in, closing many shops.

It is Greece’s first major labour protest this year, as the government sticks to austerity cuts demanded under the terms of the country’s international bail-out.

The Socialist government of Prime Minister George Papandreou is cutting spending and raising taxes to reduce its debt mountain.

In May last year Greece secured a 110bn-euro (£93bn; $150bn) bail-out from the European Union and International Monetary Fund. Read more…

York, PA - Updates to the state's Megan's Law website will help improve public safety through detailed searches and crime prevention tips, state police said Wednesday in a news release. State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said the new features will help people know if a sex offender lives in their neighborhood. A new search feature allows a user to enter an address and search from a half-mile up to a five-mile radius. Searches also can be done by using a drop-down list of municipalities and counties. The site will list names, addresses and updated photos of offenders within the area, Noonan said. A Soundex feature also allows users to type in a name and will list people with the same name and similar-sounding names, the news release states. Even if a name is misspelled, Noonan said, the website is more likely to make a match. Geocoding and Google mapping had helped keep better track of offender addresses, police said. As part of the upgrade, offender photos are dated to show the most recent ones. People can still make anonymous tips through the website, and police hope to add e-mail and text messaging notifications about offenders through the AlertPa system. Police: Woman shot multiple times in York City

Officers performed first aid on a York City woman shot multiple times early Wednesday morning until an ambulance arrived to rush her to York Hospital, police said.

Florida Ross, 27, of East South Street, was taken to the hospital's operating room, according to police, who did not know the extent of her injuries. Her condition could not be obtained Wednesday morning.

York City Police said Ross was in the first block of East Maple Street about 2:25 a.m. and was arguing with a man she knows. The man shot her several times in the torso and arms, police said.

Police said they have identified a suspect and continue to investigate. An arrest had not been made as of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers were already responding to East Maple Street for a ShotSpotter gunshot-activation alert when someone called 911 to report the shooting, police said. They found Ross lying in the intersection of East Maple and South Court streets and began to administer first aid, police said.
