Should religion be part of the law?

By RABBI LARRY SEIDMAN, Ph.D.
GOD, RELIGION AND YOU
FOR THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Where does your religion -- your belief or disbelief -- show itself? Is it an internal thing? Is it in your heart and your mind? Is it in national politics? Or is it in a global world view?

Our founding fathers in the first amendment to the Constitution seem to think it is personal. It says: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." This seems pretty simple. Religious organizations get no special treatment from the government—pro or con. No tax exemptions. No regulations. No White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. No differences for believers and non-believers. If this how you think our country should operate, please go to the poll at lower right and vote for Option 1: Religion should be personal. It should have no absolutely no recognition by the government.

As you probably know, this is not the way our country really operates. The IRS code gives tax exemptions to religious organizations, along with restrictions on what they can do while enjoying these benefits. Institutions cannot use tax exempt dollars to tell you how to vote. Nevertheless we have many examples of churches advocating for or against laws about gay marriage and abortion. Our government can't establish or prohibit a specific religion but it does support religious activities of various sorts. Is this right? Is this what we should be doing? If you think it is, vote for Option 2: Religions should be supported and limited just like we support and limit other educational and charitable institutions.

U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has investigated religious activity in the U.S. His most recent investigation has produced a staff report with a recommendation that the Congress relax the IRS ban on electioneering by religions and other nonprofit groups. In 2009, he introduced the "We the People Act." This bill would have reduced the federal courts' jurisdiction. These and similar proposed laws would widen the role of religion in the lawmaking process.

Some people think organizations of believers and non-believers should try to make their religious principles into law. We could stay within the existing framework of the Constitution as we know it, but go much further to "establish" religious principles. Why not use our legal system to control gay rights, abortions, profanity, and working on the Sabbath? If we believe that God prohibits these things, why aren't they illegal? If you think this is the role of religion, please vote for Option 3: Religions should attempt to establish laws in the U.S. that implement their understanding of what right and wrong.

The Constitution and the First Amendment were unique when they were created in the 1700s. Most countries then and many countries today view the established religion and the civil government as two parts of the same governing structure. In Iran, for example, the law is based on Shi'a Islamic law or "sharia." The basic law of Saudi Arabia says: "...God's Book and the Sunnah of His Prophet, God's prayers and peace be upon him, are its constitution...."

Should something similar be the goal of American religions? Should the Bible, with some set of interpretations, be the source book for American law? Are the Ten Commandments the basis of law? Should judges defer to religious leaders to define right and wrong?" If you think this is the direction we should be moving please vote for Option 4: American religions should attempt to change the Constitution to base our laws on religious principles.

Should Americans limit their thinking about religion and morality to the U.S.? Aren't we dedicated to fighting evil wherever we find it? Professor Brandon Scott of Phillips Theological Seminary argues that Jesus did not really mean "kingdom of God." Scott says that the correct translation is "Empire of God." What Jesus had in mind, he says, was replacing the rule of the Roman Empire by a new empire ruled by God. The Roman Empire, at that time, ruled over virtually the entire civilized world. Should we be seeking the same dominance for our moral principles?

In his famous speech on March 18, 1983, President Reagan described the Soviet Union as an evil empire. He argued that the U.S. military was part of "the struggle between right and wrong and good and evil." President G. W. Bush, in his second inaugural address declared a US policy "with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world." Jesus talked about "establishing the Empire of God." Is the proper goal of the U.S. to spread our religious and moral values throughout the world?" If this is your view, please vote for Option 5: The U.S. should behave like an empire to establish our beliefs and values at home and around the world.

I know that these questions ask you to choose between broad categories. If you just can't do it, please choose Option 6: None of the above captures my views. If you do, please explain your views in the comment field at ocregister.com/religion.

I am looking forward to seeing your vote and your comments below.

The Real Internet Censors: Unaccountable ISPs?

The Real Internet Censors: Unaccountable ISPs?

According to a new report, the Internet police are coming… and they’re not wearing badges. Instead, governments are devolving enforcement powers on the ‘net to ISPs.

Here at Ars Technica, we regularly report on the uneasy relationship between Internet Service Providers and the national legal systems under which they operate. This tension surfaces most obviously when it comes to suing individual consumers for illegal file sharing.

Plaintiff lawyers want maximum cooperation from ISPs in tracking down subscribers to be subpoenaed, while providers like Time Warner Cable insist they can only process so many requests at a time. Denounced as permissive on piracy, ISPs and content industry lawyers collide in the courts.

But a new report suggests that nations are slowly turning ISPs into the off-duty information cops of the world. Eager to placate politicians in order to achieve their own goals (like the selective throttling of data), networks are cooperating with governments looking for easy, informal solutions to difficult problems like copyright infringement, dangerous speech, online vice, and child pornography.

Network and content providers are ostensibly engaging in “self-regulation,” but that’s a deceptive phrase, warns the European Digital Rights group. “It is not regulation—it is policing—and it is not ’self-’ because it is their consumers and not themselves that are being policed,” EDR says.

The report, titled “The Slide From ‘Self-Regulation’ to Corporate Censorship,” cites many situations and examples to make the case for an emerging “censorship ecosystem” driven by ISPs. Here are two:

EDR sees the United Kingdom’s Internet Watch Foundation as a primary concern. Established following a London police official’s open letter to UK ISPs, insisting that they take “necessary action” against newsgroups containing illegal content, Internet Watch has become an executor of extra-legal rulings “on what is illegal and what is not,” EDR charges.

When the nonprofit identifies sites as unacceptable, ISPs remove them. The IWF is probably most famous in the United States for its 2008 recommendation that Wikipedia pages showing The Scorpions’ controversial “Virgin Killer” album be blocked. They were, until the organization backed down on its insistence that the cover constituted child pornography.

The end result of all this blacklisting fervor is that legitimate content is censored and child pornography is not stopped, says EDR. On the contrary—in some instances, important evidence leading to the prosecution of criminals may be scattered.

But “the British government is happy with a system where it can show activity in this important policy area without necessarily having to devote significant resources to the problem. Similarly, the ISPs that have signed up to the system get good publicity without having to invest significantly in terms of either time or money.”

Interestingly, the report contends that the United States has a somewhat fairer system for copyright takedown notification and appeal than Europe. EDR cites a number of disturbing studies in which researchers sent bogus takedown notices to European ISPs, and got what they asked for—deleted content.

One of the most famous of these was the Bits of Freedom takedown test of October 2004. In this experiment, the Dutch digital rights group published an excerpt from an 1871 text by Eduard Douwes Dekker, author of the famous anti-colonialist novel Max Havelar. The text appeared on various websites, which noted that it was in the public domain.

Bits of Freedom then set up a fake group called the E.D. Dekkers Society to claim ownership of the passage, and the Society sent this missive to respective server hosts and hosting ISPs:

E.D. Dekkers society, Rotterdam

To whom it concerns,

I am writing to you as the legal representative of the E.D. Dekkers society. The society owns the copyright of all the published works of E.D. Dekkers. I hereby notify you that you are hosting material (published via a so-called home-page) which infringes on our copyrights

The address of the website is <different per provider>

Use nor distribution of this material has been authorised by the E.D. Dekkers society. Hence I have to conclude that this publication constitutes an infringement of the copyrights of the society.

Under the European E-Commerce directive you as a hosting provider are liable for unlawful content if you don’t act immediately after you have been notified of this fact. I trust you will take all necessary measures upon receipt of this notification to end this and all future infringements of our intellectual property rights.

Thank you for your courtesy and anticipated co-operation,Mr. J. Droogleever (legal advisor E.D. Dekkers society), johandroogleever@hotmail.com

Here’s how one of the hosting ISPs responded to the phony notice:

They did call and e-mail the customer, and confirmed the take down to Droogleever. They took all the arguments for granted, and reported to the customer on the phone that the infringement was ‘a fact’. In their e-mail they said, ‘We are obliged to do this after we have been notified of an alleged criminal act.’ In their zealousness to comply, to Droogleever they added a very surprising line: ‘Normally we only take materials off-line if we receive a written notification with proof, but in this case we have made an exception.’

Bottom line: 70 percent of the providers in the experiment took down the content without scrutinizing either it or the complainant.

All this is central to the censorship ecosystem that European Digital Rights fears, and it worries that this sort of extra-judicial censorship could get much larger in the near future. The group wants more debate “to assess the scale of the policing measures being entrusted to Internet intermediaries, the cost for the rule of law and for fundamental rights as well as the cost for effective investigation and prosecution of serious crimes in the digital environment.”

New York Post: Archbishop Dolan to be deposed over missing sex-abuse settlement funds

Amplify’d from reform-network.net

By GINGER ADAMS OTIS

Lawyers for alleged clergy sex-abuse victims in Milwaukee plan to depose New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan and several Catholic bishops in an ongoing lawsuit about missing church funds.

Attorney Jeffrey Anderson has accused the Archdiocese of Milwaukee of shuffling $75 million from its books over the last six years to avoid paying up on sex-abuse settlements.

Dolan was Archbishop of Milwaukee from 2002 to 2009, when allegations of sexual abuse against the church exploded following testimony from victims before the Wisconsin State Senate and Assembly Judiciary Committee. During his tenure, the church got hit with 23 sex-abuse lawsuits.

Pagan Valentine's Day lovers leave hotel cleaning nightmare

Valentine's Day lovers leave hotel cleaning nightmare

VALENTINE'S Day is a time for love, but Melbourne hotel workers say they are fed up with cleaning rooms covered in fruit, chocolates and other things.

"For us, Valentine's Day means flower petals scattered all over the floors, spilt champagne everywhere and some very questionable stains all over the beds, but no extra time to clean,'' said one Hilton Hotel room attendant.

"We see exotic fruit and chocolates ground into the carpets, bubble bath all over the bathroom and massage oils all over the bed. And don't even ask me about the whipped cream,'' she said in a statement.

The Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union (LHMU) has planned a protest outside the Hilton South Wharf Hotel in Melbourne, where they will be handing out cleaning wipes and asking for a hand.

The union said cleaners get as little as 15 minutes to tidy a room, a job staff say requires about 45 minutes to do properly.

Melbourne was in the grip of a hygiene crisis because of the insufficient cleaning time, which was putting guests' health at risk, the LHMU said.

LHMU state secretary Jess Walsh said hotels like the Hilton got a financial bonanza from Valentine's Day, but were loath to pay room attendants for the extra time required to clean up afterwards.

"Valentine's Day should be a beautiful occasion for everyone, but hotels like the Hilton ruin it by not giving room attendants enough time to clean rooms properly,'' Ms Walsh said.

Hilton South Wharf general manager Michael Bourne said the LHMU had been making allegations concerning the hotel for quite a while, but had refused to discuss the claims.

"I am quite happy to sit down with them ... Staff relations are excellent,'' Mr Bourne said.

Mr Bourne said Hilton was a very proud employer that treated staff well.

He said the hotel catered mainly to guests attending conventions, not those on romantic getaways, so Valentine's Day should not be particularly draining.

"We don't have many lovebirds in here,'' Mr Bourne said.

Switzerland rejects tighter gun controls

Sport shooting is very popular in Switzerland

13 February 2011 Last updated at 13:32

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12441834

Swiss voters have rejected proposed tighter controls on gun ownership, near-complete results show.

It means that the voters decided during the referendum to retain the current system, which allows army-issued weapons to be kept at home.

Supporters of the tighter curbs wanted to have weapons kept in armouries and demanded stricter checks on gun owners.

Opponents said the move would undermine trust in the army. The final result of the vote is expected soon.

Near-complete results show at least 14 out of 26 Swiss cantons rejected the proposal in Sunday's vote.

National institution

For the proposal to succeed, it required the support of the majority of Swiss citizens and the cantons.

Overall, about 57% of the Swiss voters rejected the plan, while 43% backed it.

Geneva and Basel both bucked the trend by approving it, according to the Swissinfo website.

The result is a blow to gun-control groups in Switzerland, the BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva reports.

There are an estimated two to three million guns circulating in Switzerland.

No-one knows the exact number because there is no national firearms register, our correspondent adds.

In addition to the semi-automatic assault rifle that all those serving in the army store at home, there are thousands of hunting rifles and pistols.

Serving and former soldiers have been allowed to keep their weapons at home since World War II.

The proposal to end that custom was backed by a coalition of doctors, women's groups and police associations.

Although Switzerland's overall crime rate is low by European standards, the country has the highest rate of gun suicide in Europe.

The proposal's backers had argued that keeping soldiers' firearms locked up in armouries would reduce the suicide rate.

A number of high-profile killings in recent years - such as the shooting of ski star Corinne Rey-Bellet by her estranged husband in 2006 - have also boosted support for greater gun control.

But the Swiss army is a national institution, and changing anything about it is controversial, says our correspondent.

Opponents of the proposals say taking soldiers' guns away would undermine the military and could open the door to abolishing Switzerland's citizen army all together.

"If the 'Yes' goes through, it really risks destroying the country," Xavier Schwitzguebel, an army reservist officer, was earlier quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

"If we take away the weapon, which represents this trust, that means that we are breaking the sacred union between democracy and citizen."

The Vatican Wages tremendous Immoral Attack on humanity

The Vatican Wages tremendous Immoral Attack on humanity

That should be the name of my blog. Just look at these few stories and look at the picture that is being painted in my mind. Let me see if I can describe to you what I see. These are all recent stories which have broke within the last month.
Now let's sort these stories out a bit. In article "2." we read, "A team of five investigators -- including a psychologist, social worker, attorney, and members of several law enforcement agencies -- interviewed both the accuser and the priest and found no wrongdoing, Muench said."

But in Article "4" we read, "Victims who muster the courage to report their torment then must endure an investigatory process biased against them." and, "On July 24, 2008," the grand jury wrote, an archdiocesan staffer told 36-year-old victim "Ben" that the Review Board "could not substantiate his allegation. Less than a year later, Ben committed suicide."

So was the "team of five investigators" mentioned in article "2." similar or even the same as "the review board" mentioned in article "4."? The same review board which lead to someone's suicide?

Speaking of suicide, this leads me to another suicide that just occurred in Kentucky which ties into article "3." The case of David Jarboe who had just written a note on his facebook account saying he was molested by priests. Right after he wrote the note he then went and killed himself in the parking lot of the catholic church where his family attended and where his funeral was held. And even though he was a well liked young man, had a good job, pretty girlfriend, was a former college football player and sports enthusiast. Sounds normal right? But what did the archdiocese say about him to the newspaper? Answer: "The "poor bedeviled young man, for him to mention (Father Baer) in the same context with whatever may have happened to him is so unfortunate and so unfair,"

So this leads me finally to article "1." And it wasn't so much the fact that of what the article says, but what is said in the comment area. "The Vatican should remove Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, Archpriest of the Papal Liberian Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, from his prestigious position. This man facilitated the shuffling of pedophiles from parish to parish and then committed perjury by staing that he knew knothing of the problem. He should have been indicted, prosecuted, and if convicted, put in jail. Cardinal Law became the first individual shown to have actively participated in the cover-up of child molestation; for this distinction, he was rewarded with his present day position." (sic)

I myself am a former Catholic who was proud to have "RC" stamped on my dog tags when I was in the military during the Persian Gulf War. Not knowing that solidified my part of the papal crusade I was part of. This I did in ignorance not yet knowing what I was part of. That was from 1990 -94. In 1997 I left the church for good when I read the bible for the first time in my life and I saw that the bible and the Catholic Church were worlds apart. And that was even before I knew of any child molestation cases.

What we see above in the articles I have referenced is a struggle of  those abused against the moral attack waged upon us by powerful Vatican officials who make sure they mingle with all government agencies. Holding award ceremonies, dinners where government and state officials are awarded all kinds of plagues, knighthoods and other honors for standing by the Catholic Church. This mix of Roman Catholicism and politics has to stop now. This is why it was illegal for Roman Catholics to hold government office in America in the earlier years. It wasn't religious persecution against catholics. But righteous prosecution against corruption. Again, I was raised going to Catholic Church. I went myself to the church at age 8 out of a desire to be closer to God and I was baptised for the first time at 8 years old. I was then confirmed after I attended catechism classes with all my catholic buddies. I clutched rosary beads while praying to God while in the military asking Him to reveal His Son to me in a dream. Which dream I had on the third night of praying that prayer. Although it had nothing to do with rosary beads or the Catholic Church. We need to understand that God is attainable to us directly and freely and not through any rites or ceremonies in the catholic Church. This I have experienced first hand. If we could understand this as human beings we will see that the Catholic Church is actually useless in our relationship with God. Not only is it absolutely useless but as we see by just the four articles I listed above, the "Church" can cripple us spiritually, psychologically and do harm even to physical death of some.

Please, break away from the lie that we need to be in "good grace" with the "church" to be in good grace with God. All we need to be in good grace with God is His Son Christ Jesus who is free to us and isn't confined to any building. Jesus set me free in 1997, since then my eyes have been opened to what the Roman Catholic Church really is. The assault on family and children is the tip of the iceberg. Wars have been waged in her name, genocides and much much more. They have their people on every side of  every position to steer all things to their favor in society. I am saying this after years of careful study.

But please know, Jesus is there, waiting for you to come to Him. His hands are outstretched. He promises to give us power and peace and comfort. This is real and the offer is to you now, today. No matter who you are and what you have done, the blood of Jesus can cleanse away the sin that is weighing you down. And He can give you real power to go and sin no more. Guilt on your soul may be the thing that stops you from reporting pedophile priests. This is a false guilt. The true guilt you may feel isn't from the priest but from other sins you may have committed in your life. Your separation from God and your guilt is real if you haven't truly come to Christ directly and repenting of your sins.

When I went to the Catholic Priest after I was seeing all these things in the bible and I was questioning him he lied and told me, "well, the Romans wrote the bible". But It wasn't the Romans who wrote the bible. It was the Jews. The priest then began to try and get me to confess to him. His face became red and inflamed with lust as he asked me if I committed the sin of "masturbation". I could tell he was totally corrupt. And I'm sure a huge part of it is the fact that these single men who have no wives are listening to all kinds of secret sins. From pedophilia to homosexuality to whatever they are exposed to in confessionals. This is just another sign that the catholic church is all wrong. Mankind wasn't meant to be confessed to. Especially confession to Roman Catholic "priests". Confession is meant to be to God only.

"If we confess our sins, he (Jesus) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9

The Bible does say to "Confess your FAULTS one to another..." (James 5:16 KJV) "Another" in that verse is plural and so it's not supposed to be one person who receives all the confessions. And of course James is talking to people who are saved, born again, who have been cleansed of sin and given the real power of God that comes directly from God and not through any church hierarchy. And those types of people aren't going to be committing any of the filthy types of sins unregenerated sinners commit and confess to the Priests in Roman Catholicism.

Even the Geneva Bible which predates the King James Version also rightly states, "Acknowledge your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. For the prayer of a righteous man availeth much, if it be fervent."

Before I went to see that priest I was sharing what I was learning in the Bible with the secretary and the conflictions it has to the catholic church and in our conversation she confided in me that it is better not to know too much sometimes. As I left the priest that final time there was a man coming in who looked foreign and he was dressed in a purple and black robe, he looked like a real life Dracula. I have never even seen any figure like that in regards to the Catholic church since that time or before. I have no idea who that was. Maybe the priest secretly called for him while I was in the Priests office. Back then I didn't think much of it although it seemed odd I don't know but I don't think it was a coincidence. This was maybe the third time I had come visiting this Priest in Long Beach NY and trying to discuss the doctrinal discrepancies I saw in the church when reading the Bible.

Many people may just cast my story aside for whatever reason. Perhaps calling me a traitor to Roman Catholicism. But I truly and sincerely care for Roman catholics. You are the people I grew up with my whole life. All I know is that God has used people's stories here and there to help me. Maybe he can somehow use mine to help you.

But please, whoever you are, don't give up. If you've been abused or sexually assaulted by priests or anyone, Contact your local Police Dept. If they don't help you contact the DA's office in your area. Or you can contact groups like SNAP  You can also contact me here if you wish to share any concerns with me directly.

Grand jury shows audacity of archdiocese

Probe of how the church investigates allegations against priests found it focuses mostly on its reputation and assets
By Monica Yant Kinney
If Catholic churches across the region took up a collection this Sunday and used it to hire lawyers to mislead victims of clergy sex abuse, would anyone give?

If a parish priest confessed that your tithing paid rapists to retire and funded interrogations that push innocents to suicide, would you demand a refund?

And knowing that dozens of area priests accused of abuse remain on the job in good standing with access to children, should you think twice about signing up your son for altar service?

The latest 124-page grand jury report on clergy sexual abuse makes abundantly clear that when it comes to predator priests, the Philadelphia Archdiocese blew its last chance to be believed.

Six years after another grand jury report forced contrition and so-called reforms, the archdiocese remains focused on protecting its assets and reputation above all else.

Victims who muster the courage to report their torment then must endure an investigatory process biased against them.

One young man was hounded into giving an in-person statement with a church staffer who immediately relayed the details to lawyers fearing litigation. Another victim was guilted into reliving his trauma while hospitalized after a suicide attempt, only to learn later that the archdiocese had used his confidences against him in the defense of his priestly abuser.

District Attorney Seth Williams, a proud Catholic, admitted that he had lost faith in his church's ability to do right by those it wronged. He now urges abuse victims to call or e-mail his office (215-686-8783, da.victimservices@phila.gov) rather than risk being wounded all over again.

"You do not need to go to the archdiocese first," Williams said.

Even the grand jurors - regular citizens honorably answering the call to seek justice - noted the audacity of the archdiocese's overseeing sex-abuse investigations:

"There is no other class of crimes where we expect the victims to rely on their assailants for a resolution."

Mistakes and intentions

Five years and five months ago, a different panel of grand jurors released the first report on sex abuse in the archdiocese. They found that church leaders had allowed dozens of priests to abuse hundreds of children for decades and harbored at least 63 known criminals.

Cardinal Justin Rigali condemned that report, especially the assertion that church officials knew exactly what they were doing when they protected pedophile priests over children.

"Mistakes are one thing," Rigali insisted. "Intentions are another."

That was 2005, and though the report did not lead to arrests, it forced the archdiocese to hire a respected victim advocate, establish a Review Board, and - significantly - begin reporting new allegations to law enforcement.

The church touted the "reforms," but made sure the new process was as sick and twisted as the old.

Turns out the archdiocese refused to adopt any of the victim advocate's recommendations. And that much-hyped Review Board - chosen by the cardinal himself - regularly deems accusations "unsubstantiated" even when priests flunk polygraph tests and the evidence against them is overwhelming.

In one fondling case reported by two victims, the Review Board sided with the priest even after hearing convincing corroborating testimony by several other former altar boys with clear memory of the cleric's obsession with sex.

"On July 24, 2008," the grand jury wrote, an archdiocesan staffer told 36-year-old victim "Ben" that the Review Board "could not substantiate his allegation. Less than a year later, Ben committed suicide."

Second time's a charm?

Last week, another group of truth-seeking strangers released a second sordid grand jury report on clergy sex abuse. This one led to the arrest of a Catholic schoolteacher and three archdiocesan priests on rape charges and a once-omnipotent monsignor charged with endangering the welfare of children.

Within hours, Rigali fired off another denial, this time of the stunning revelation that the archdiocese still refuses to pull priests from parishes after they are accused of sexually assaulting minors.

"I assure all the faithful," Rigali wrote, "that there are no archdiocesan priests in ministry today who have an admitted or established allegation of sexual abuse of a minor against them."

Parse that sentence with me, will you? It's a work of lawyerly art designed to lull Catholics into thinking their children are safe.

No active priest could have an admitted allegation, we now know, because as part of those "reforms," the archdiocese no longer bothers to question priests accused of sexual misconduct.

"The policy is not to even ask the abuser to speak," wrote the astonished jurors. "The explanation we were given for this policy is that it might 'put the priest in a position of admitting' his guilt."

The second part of Rigali's wiggle concerns established allegations. See above, then weep.

If two grand jury reports, failed lie-detector tests, repeat accusations, earnest witnesses, and victim suicides aren't enough to convince the archdiocese of priestly culpability in 2011, what is?

"Abide With Me"

In 2001, I co -led a group of 16 people on a mission trip to Kenya where, through the help of the Newbold College community, we financed and helped to build a church/ community centre.  We finally arrived in Imbo, a village quite near to lake Victoria, after a tumultuous fourteen-hour drive.  My first impressions of Kenya were idyllic. Zebras crossed the streets, beautifully made mud huts were asymmetrically situated and the sun beat down on the dusty roads. However, the reality of the situation was more complex than my first romantic musings.

Hardship and death were never far away. AIDS, the disease that no one really talked about, had claimed many lives; unemployment and poverty were the uninvited gate-keepers of the community.  With multiple family deaths and hardship on every side, one might wonder what the people had to be grateful for. Yet, I found exuberance in the local church community; joy in their worship and a hospitable and strong people.  I remember thinking that if I faced the calamities that these people had, I would understandably be in counselling, perhaps on anti-depressants and those around me might sympathise with my constant coasting on the edge of a mental breakdown. The Kenyan people showed resilience that made me question to the core, my own Westernised ability to deal with great trials.

So is it wrong to be in visible agony and distress due to the struggles and grief of life? Well, no. Resilience is defined as  ‘the power or ability to return to the original form, position, etc., after being bent, compressed or stretched; elasticity.’(www.dictionary.com) Life has a way of bending, compressing and stretching us in more painful ways that we could ever imagine.  Elijah had suicidal thoughts (1Kings 19:4); David’s musings in the Psalms, as highlighted by last week’s lesson, are evidence of a perturbed mind (Ps 55:4-5); Job cursed the day he was born (Job 3:1); whilst Jesus was sorrowful to the point of death (Matt 26: 38). Our Christian leaders suffered tremendous lows, which have been left as a witness for all who go through hardship.

We purposely introduce our youth to the study of hardship through our education systems, retelling to them the stories of holocausts, slavery and wars. I taught secondary school History for several years and was astounded when I learnt that although 58,000 Americans soldiers died in the Vietnam War, more American veterans committed suicide, than were actually killed in the war.  Veterans were also ‘far more likely than the rest of the population to suffer panic attacks, depression, drug addiction and to be divorced or unemployed’ (Steve Wraugh and John Wright, Superpower Relations and Vietnam, 1945-1990).  The horrors of war were too much to bear and the physical and emotional scars too deep for these individuals.

Yet our Bible characters reacted differently to their trials. Elijah communed with God on Mount Horeb and returned to his duties (1 Kings 19:11-18); David affirmed that God would sustain him (Psalms 55: 22); Job attested that even if he were slain he would still trust God (Job 13:11-15); and Jesus surrendered His will to that of His Father (Matt 26:39). All had hope beyond themselves and their situations, believing that God ultimately was in control.   Faith and hope in God have the power to bring the elasticity back into stretched, worn lives.

A cousin of mine, who is non-Christian, once made a statement that I will never forget. She said,  ‘you Christians get upset and almost lose your faith when something bad happens to you. Yet, there were bad things happening to other people around you before. It’s just when it becomes your personal problem that it becomes an issue. If I were a Christian, I would just know that bad things happen and if it happened to me, it would not affect my faith.’ (Paraphrase) Although not true of us all, I think she does have a point. Philip Yancey wrote a book for Christians called, Disappointed with God, in which, ‘he looks at faith through the eyes of those who doubt.’ (Philip Yancey, Disappointed with God, (Zondervan, 1988), foreward.)  Yet in every crisis, there is always the possibility that we can give up or give in or just turn around and blame God. If this were not the case we would not be in the process of being stretched.

The apostle Paul is undoubtedly a poster boy for resilience. He catalogues the hardship that he has gone undergone for the sake of Christ: floggings, imprisonment, shipwreck, (2 Cor 11:23-28) as well as his thorn in the flesh (2 Cor 12:2-10). Yet his rally cry is a clearly one of victory over circumstances:

‘We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed’. 2 Cor 4:8-9

Indeed, life is difficult, as M Scott Peck wrote in his book The Road Less Travelled, a book I read avidly until the end section where it ventured into spirituality.  I take personal assurance from knowing that however difficult life may be come I am not forsaken due to the abiding presence of God.

The hymn ‘Abide With Me’ is one that has become so associated with funerals that only the brave will sing it in any other church service, yet the words written by Henry France Lyte as he lay dying of tuberculosis are a beautiful and concise answer to why we should remain resilient as Christians:

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

All of us, at some point, are liable to walk in the valley of the shadow of death with all the rich and foreboding metaphysical meaning that this verse holds. For the Christian, resilience is being able to ‘fear no evil’, simply because Christ is with us. It is the ability to acknowledge that there are myriad ways that nature and twisted humanity may try to oppress, depress and suppress us, yet trust God and, despite great distress, be at peace.

Eat For Strength

Dr Truman

Every movement we make, every thought we think, every heartthrob, involves waste and the expenditure of energy. There is a constant breaking down of our tissues; and the food ingested is the source of the material for repair. By this digestion, assimilation, and oxidation, energy is liberated for life’s varied activities.

The idea has long been current that superior qualities of body and mind come from eating flesh food; but the verdict of science, after long observation and careful investigation and various experiments, is rapidly reversing this opinion. The experiments of Prof. Russell H. Chittenden, president of the American Physiological Society, and director of the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale, are convincing. His elaborate investigations, extending over long periods of time, prove that persons of widely varying habits of life, temperament, occupation and constitution, can maintain and even heighten their mental and physical vigor while subsisting upon a diet containing but one half the usual amount of protein, and in which the flesh is reduced to a minimum or is entirely absent.

The subjects of the first experiment were three physicians, three professors, and a clerkmen of sedentary and chiefly of mental occupation. For a period of six months they were required to reduce the amount of meat and other protein foods by one half. “Their weight remained stationary; but they improved in general health, and experienced a quite remarkable increase of mental clearness and energy.”

For his next experiment, Professor Chittenden used a detachment of twenty soldiers from the hospital corps of the United States Army, “representing a great variety of types of different ages, nationality, temperament, and degrees of intelligence.” For a period of six months, these men lived upon a ration in which the protein was reduced to one third the usual amount, and the flesh to five sixths of an ounce daily.

There was a slight gain in weight, “the general health was well maintained, and with suggestions of improvement that were frequently so marked as to challenge attention.” “Most conspicuous, however,” remarks Professor Chittenden, “was the effect observed on the muscular strength of the various subjects. . . . Without exception, we note a phenomenal gain in strength which demands explanation.” There was an average gain in strength for each subject of about 50 percent. For the third experiment Professor Chittenden secured as subjects a group of eight leading athletes at Yale, all in training trim. For five months they subsisted upon a diet comprised of one half to one third of the quantity of protein food they had been in the habit of eating. “Gymnasium tests showed in every man a truly remarkable gain in strength and endurance.”

Dr. Irving Fisher, professor of political economy at Yale University, concluded a series of experiments testing the endurance of forty-nine persons, about thirty of the number being flesh abstainers. The first endurance test was that of “holding the arms horizontally.” The flesh eaters averaged ten minutes. The flesh abstainers averaged forty-nine minutes. The longest time for a flesh eater was twenty-two minutes. The maximum time for a flesh abstainer was two hundred minutes. The second endurance test was that of “deep knee bending.” The flesh eaters averaged 383 times, the flesh abstainers 833. Professor Fisher explains the results on the basis that “flesh foods contain in themselves fatigue poisons of various kinds, which naturally aggravate the action of the fatigue poisons produced in the body.”

Professor Fisher remarks: “These investigations, with those of Combe of Lausanne; Metchnikoff and Tisier of Paris; as well as Herter and others in the United States, seem gradually to be demonstrating that the fancied strength from meat is, like the fancied strength from alcohol, an illusion.” Professor Rubner, of Berlin, “one of the world’s foremost students of hygiene,” read a paper before the International Congress of Hygiene and Demography on the “Nutrition of the People,” saying: “It is a fact that the diet of the well-to-do is not in itself physiologically justified; it is not even healthful; for on account of the false notions of the strengthening effects of meat, too much meat is used by young and old, and this is harmful.”

In the long-distance races in Germany, the flesh abstainers have invariably been easy victors. Upon this point, Professor von Norden, in his monumental work on “Metabolism and Practical Medicine,” says: “In Germany, at least, in these competitive races, the vegetarian is ahead of the meat eater. The non-vegetarian cannot compete with the vegetarian in the matter of endurance in these long-distance walks. The vegetarian is ahead in the matter of rapid pedestrian feats.”

The Strength Delusion

As in the heat engine, energy for light, heat, or power does not come from burning copper, lead, or iron filings, but from carbonaceous materials, like coal, coke, fuel oils, etc.; so, in the human body, energy for warmth and muscular effort comes, not from oxidizing the metal repair foods, the proteins, but from those foods which are rich in carbonthe starches and the sugars, called the carbohydrates.

Whence, then, come these “illusions,” these “false notions of the strengthening effect of meat?” They come from the fact that foods of this class are stimulating. A stimulant is a counterfeit for strength. It is a physical deceiver. It makes a person believe he is strong because he “feels” strong, when it is not true at all. That which is interpreted as strength is only nervous excitement. A stimulant never builds up; it only stirs up. While pretending to contribute energy, it actually robs the body of strength.

Every animal organism is constantly throwing off poisons, such as urea, uric acid, and creatinine. The kidneys have no other function than the removal of poisons. If an animal is deprived of the use of its kidneys, it will die of self-poisoning in a few days. When an animal is slaughtered and the blood ceases to circulate, this stream of urinary products on its way to the kidneys for excretion stops in the tissues, and is devoured by the consumer with the flesh.

Friedenwald and Ruhrah, in their book, Diet in Health and Disease, say:

“The [meat] extractives are probably of no value either as a source of energy or in the formation of tissues. They act as stimulants and appetizers, and it has been stated that the craving some individuals have for meat is in reality a desire for the extractives.”

Armand Gautier, the eminent French dietitian, says on this point: “Like the opium smoker, the individual who accustoms himself to meat, feels that he misses it when he does not take the usual excess.”

Poisons Contained in a Meat Diet

The seeds of death and decay are in every animal organism; and just as soon as the heart ceases to throb, the arteries cease to pulsate, and the spark of life leaves the animal, decomposition begins. These putrefactive changes often result in the formation of violent poisons, called ptomaines. The word “ptomaine” comes from a Greek word meaning carcass, or cadaver; and the poisons are variously called putrefactive alkaloid, animal alkaloid, etc. The presence of fatal amounts of these poisons in the flesh may not be betrayed by any change in appearance, odor, or taste. The common practice of keeping meat until it becomes tender, or “ripens,” is simply waiting for decomposition to advance until the meat fibre is softened by the process of decay. Canned meats are especially liable to contain the poisonous ptomaine.

Should we take an excess of starches or sugars, provision has been made for storing a certain amount in the form of fat, or as glycogen, in the liver and the muscles; but no provision is found for storing an excess of protein, as excess of this food element is of particular injury to the body. The extensive experiments of Professors Chittenden, Fisher and other scientific workers, have shown that for efficient nutrition we require that only one tenth of the daily intake of food should be of the structure-building, tissue-repairing protein. In the laboratory of nature, the food elements have been so combined by the plants, that the protein element is very low; and thus a diet selected from the natural products of the earth is not only free from uric acid and other waste products, but is already balanced. The addition to the menu of flesh food, which does not contain any starch, at once raises the protein constituent too high.

Disease Prone Diet

The waste products in the blood, arising from excess protein, are a leading cause of Bright’s disease, auto-intoxication, arteriosclerosis, and high blood pressure. These maladies are often associated in the same individual, and frequently have a common origin. Sir William Osler, in his Principles and Practice of Medicine, writes:

“I am more and more impressed with the part played by overeating in inducing arteriosclerosis. There are many cases in which there is no other factor.”

Dr. Alexander Haig, of London, states that uric acid makes the blood “collemic,” or viscous, and then the heart has difficulty pumping it through the capillaries. Hence the blood pressure increases.

Issac Ott, in his textbook on physiology, says on this point: “Burton-Opitz has shown that hunger reduces viscosity, and a meat diet raises it to a great height, while carbohydrates and a fat diet give average values to it.”

In the colon, flesh foods rapidly undergo decomposition, giving rise to numerous poisons, which are absorbed into the blood, and are toxic to the nervous system, and cast an additional burden upon liver and kidneys. Bouchard found that the fecal and urinary excrement of carnivorous animals is twice as poisonous as that from an herbivorous animal. The former also emits a strong odor, and the fecal discharges are offensively repulsive. Doctor Haig, before quoted, also asserts that “Bright’s disease is the result of our meat-eating and tea-drinking habits; and as these habits are common, so also is the disease.”

While it is true that tuberculosis is more frequently contracted through the use of tuberculous milk than from tuberculous meat, the latter source of infection cannot be ignored. Numerous cases of tuberculosis have been reported where the infection could be directly traced to the flesh of tuberculous animals.

Dr. E. C. Shroeder, of the Bureau of Animal Industry of the United States Department of Agriculture, says:

“That 10 percent of the dairy cattle in the United States are affected with tuberculosis impresses me as a very conservative estimate. In New York State, about 33 percent of all cattle tested were found to be tuberculous.”

In one year in the United States, the entire carcasses of 35,103 cattle were condemned because of generalized tuberculosis. In the same year a portion of the carcasses of 99,739 more were rejected because of local tuberculosis.

Prof. M. C. Ravenel, of the University of Wisconsin, says that of the thirty-five million hogs killed for food annually in the United States, seven million are found to be infected with tuberculosis.

Ulcer of the stomach is one of our most common diseases. Leading surgeons have shown that it is ten times as frequent as was formerly supposed. It is clearly of dietetic origin, and is usually associated with a too high consumption of protein, and especially meat. Starches, sugars, and fats are not digested within the stomach, and require no acid. Proteins, on the other hand, are digested within the stomach, and require for their digestion a high percentage of hydrochloric acid. The excessive production of acid within the stomach, stimulated by too much protein, is probably the chief cause of the formation of ulcers.

Dr. Fenton B. Turck, of Chicago, said before the American Medical Association: “Ulcer of the stomach is not found in those countries where the inhabitants eat rice. It is evidently a meat eater’s disease. The zone of ulcer is in the meat eater’s zone.”

Cancer is a disease of modern civilization. It is the one major unsolved problem in the field of medical science today. In the Medical Record, Dr. W. J. Mayo is quoted as saying: “Cancer of the stomach forms nearly one third of all cancers of the human body. . . . Is it not possible that there is something in the habits of civilized man, in the cooking or other preparation of his food, which acts to produce the precancerous condition?. . . Within the last one hundred years, four times as much meat has been taken than before that time. If flesh foods are not fully broken up, decomposition results, and active poisons are thrown into an organ not intended for their reception, and which has not had time to adapt itself to the new function.”

One is hardly up-to-date who does not present an abdominal scar caused by an offending appendix. At the fifteenth International Congress of Hygiene and Demography held in Washington, D. C., Dr. G. N. Henning contributed a paper dealing with “statistics upon the increase of appendicitis and its causes.” He said: “A meat diet is of great influence in the development of appendicitis. This diet leads to constipation. In most instances, too long retention of intestinal contents in the caecum causes slight inflammation, the results of which are to weaken the appendix, and to render it non-resistant against later infection.”

When Dr. A. Lorenz, the celebrated Vienna surgeon, was in the United States, he called attention to the relatively greater prevalence of appendicitis in this country as compared with Europe, and attributed it to the greater consumption of cold-storage meats here, which he said rendered Americans unduly septic, and especially prone to infection of the appendix.

Nicholas Senn was told by the hospital surgeons in Africa that they had never seen a case of appendicitis in a vegetable-eating African.

The trichina is a small, worm-like parasite found in the flesh of “measly po rk,” which, when eaten, burrows into the muscles of the human being, producing an extremely painful and often fatal affection.

Practically speaking, the human being becomes the host of a tapeworm only by eating underdone flesh containing the larva of the parasite. The ox, the hog, and the fish frequently harbor the larvae of tapeworms.

Poor Economy

In these days when there is increased destruction and decreased production of foods, it is of great importance to know how to secure a maximum amount of nutrition from a minimum expenditure of money.

In view of this fact, it is well to remember that flesh is the most costly source of food. Sixty-two percent of the beefsteak is water. Flesh foods contain but 25 percent nourishment, and 75 percent waste matter. The grain contain 75 percent nourishment, and but 25 percent waste. Now it does not require a knowledge of higher mathematics to determine that since ten pounds of grain, when fed to an animal, make but one pound of flesh, the latter becomes a very costly source of food supply.

Anatomy and Physiology

Even a kindergarten study of the structure of the body reveals the fact that man was not intended to be a carnivorous creature. He does not possess the rough, raspy tongue of the cat family, the long, pointed canine teeth of the lion, the sharp claws of the tiger, or the talons and hooked beak of the eagle. In the carnivore, the alimentary canal is very short, being only three times the length of the body. In herbivore, as in sheep, it is thirty times the length of the body. In frugivora, such as apes, monkeys, and man, it is twelve times the body length. Baron Cuvier, a famous anatomist, writes:

“The natural food of man, judging from his structure, appears to consist principally of the fruits, roots, and other succulent parts of vegetables.”

Let us divide the animal kingdom on the basis of diet and disposition. On the one hand, we have the lion, the tiger, the wolf, the bear, the leopard, the panther, etc., all these are vicious, snarly, crabbed, ferocious beasts. Of what does their diet consist? We call them “beasts of prey.” They feast upon the raw, bloody flesh of their victims. On the other hand, we might mention the horse, the ox, the deer, the sheep, the elephant. Think of their dispositionscalm, quiet, pacific, easily domesticated. May it not be that their diet of cereals and herbs contributes to their peaceful temperament?

Gautier said on this point: “The vegetarian regime has great advantage. It adds to the alkalinity of the blood, accelerates oxidation, diminishes organic wastes and toxins. It exposes one much less likely than the ordinary regime to skin maladies, or arthritis, to congestions of internal organs. This regime tends to make us pacific beings, and not aggressive and violent.”

(Dr. A. W. Truman was a member of the American Medical Association and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He occupied the position of medical superintendent of several sanitariums. Doctor Truman was a close student of dietetics for many years.)

Why the 2520 Prophecy is Not Important

By Dwayne Lemon

Audio: 2520

There are individuals today that will take a figure that was on William Millers chart and they will use that figure as a means of saying if you do not believe in this number called the 2520, you are an apostate. There are certain individuals saying that. There are Adventists today that go around saying there is a 2520 prophecy. We have fallen away from the truth God has given us as a people. We were taught how to study the Bible. The Spirit of God leads us line upon line, precept upon precept but most people took a chart with a number on it and took an abstract quotation from the Spirit of Prophecy where Ellen White spoke highly of the chart and nothing should be altered on it but they DID NOT FINISH the statement. She said nothing should be altered on it accept by inspiration. In other words, if inspiration says something on this chart was wrong, then they have an authority to remove it. People forgot about that so they went around talking about a 2520 and allowing groups and camps to come together and it became an instrument that the devil used to create a segregation among the people of God. In a time where were 71 times in the Spirit of Prophecy we are told to press together, press together, press together, there are individuals trying to separate over something that doesn’t even exist. You say what do you mean? I will tell you exactly.

Leviticus 26

If we faithfully studied Leviticus the 26th chapter which is where this so called 2520 prophecy came into existence (http://www.2520yearprophecy.com/) , we would find there is no 2520 prophecy. That’s all we need to do but we didn’t do it that way, we failed. We began to listen to what other people were saying about a chart and an abstract quote. As a result we failed.

2520 or 2300

Which one is longer? 2520 right? A child can understand that right? Why is it that if 2520 is the longest time prophecy then why does EGW say 2300 days is the longest time prophecy in the Bible?

There will always be false and fanatical movements made by persons in the church who claim to be led of God–those who will run before they are sent and will give day and date for the occurrence of unfulfilled prophecy. The enemy is pleased to have them do this, for their successive failures and leading into false lines cause confusion and unbelief.–2SM 84 (1897). {LDE 35.2}

No Time Prophecy Beyond 1844

I plainly stated at the Jackson camp meeting to these fanatical parties that they were doing the work of the adversary of souls; they were in darkness. They claimed to have great light that probation would close in October, 1884. I there stated in public that the Lord had been pleased to show me that there would be no definite time in the message given of God since 1844.–2SM 73 (1885). {LDE 35.3}

Our position has been one of waiting and watching, with no time-proclamation to intervene between the close of the prophetic periods in 1844 and the time of our Lord’s coming.–10MR 270 (1888). {LDE 36.1}

The people will not have another message upon definite time. After this period of time [Revelation 10:4-6], reaching from 1842 to 1844, there can be no definite tracing of the prophetic time. The longest reckoning reaches to the autumn of 1844.–7BC 971 (1900). {LDE 36.2}

How simple is that? Are you saying that the prophet suddenly had a mathematical challenge in her mind? A child can understand 2520 is more than 2300 but the prophet of God under inspiration says the longest prophecy in the bible is the 2300 days. That should have settled it right there. But because individuals are holding onto ignorance God had to magnify it even further.

There are many precious truths contained in the Word of God, but it is “present truth” that the flock needs now. I have seen the danger of the messengers running off from the important points of present truth, to dwell upon subjects that are not calculated to unite the flock and sanctify the soul. {EW 63.1}

She then says in the next paragraph what present truth was.

But such subjects as the sanctuary, in connection with the 2300 days, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, are perfectly calculated to explain the past Advent movement and show what our present position is, establish the faith of the doubting, and give certainty to the glorious future. These, I have frequently seen, were the principal subjects on which the messengers should dwell. {EW 63.2}

She says NOTHING about 2520 days! 2520 is veering off points of present truth. The sanctuary in connection with the 2300 days, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, these are perfectly calculated to unite the flock, sanctify the soul and show the glorious future of the advent movement. Nothing about 2520. If that is not enough, there was a 1843 chart. If someone says the prophet said in 1843 chart nothing should be altered. Therefore inspiration was saying nothing should be altered on the chart. If that were true, then do you know we have a prophet and a group of pioneers that violated the very command of God? You ought to know why.

1843, 1850, 1863

In 1843 there was a chart by William Miller with 2520 on it. In 1850 there was another chart with the 2520 on it. But in 1863 there was another chart and guess what? No 2520 on it. There was no 2520 on the chart in 1863, neither the charts to come thereafter. No 2520. If that is not enough I leave the best for last. The pioneers came together. This is James White himself. James White the husband of the prophet. If you know Adventist history, there were certain things that James White taught that Ellen White didn’t agree with and Ellen White had to check them. She had to let him know, no this is not right, the Lord has shown me otherwise and she was being faithful in Ephesians 4:11-14 one of the functions of a prophet is to make sure that the brethren are not tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine. However, they studied Leviticus 26 and said this;

So then, there is no prophetic period in Lev. xxvi; {January 26, 1864 JWe, ARSH 68.12}

How clear of this? We have hundreds possibly thousands who have allowed themselves to be broken away over something that doesn’t exist.

…and those who imagine that such a thing exists, and are puzzling themselves over the adjustment of its several dates, are simply beating the air. To ignore, or treat with neglect, a prophetic period where one is plainly given, is censurable in the extreme. It is an equally futile, though not so heinous, a course, to endeavor to create one where none exists. {January 26, 1864 JWe, ARSH 68.12}

2520 is not a real prophecy and yet we have individuals teaching this but not only teaching it and using it as a catalyst to begin to tell us that in 9/11 supposedly according to a reinterpretation of the trumpets that now in 9/11 supposedly this is when the loud cry started and they misunderstand Life Sketches page 411. They never connected it to Testimonies volume 7 page 141. They never did line upon line, the same Holy Spirit that inspired the writings of the bible is the same Holy Spirit that inspired the writings of Ellen White. Therefore the same method that the Holy Spirit uses to study the bible is the same method we should use to study the sop. When you study the sop you should study what? Line upon line. What they did is looked at LS page 411 and said look at that, tis talking about the towers going down and the lord will shake terribly the earth and then Revelation 18:1-3 shall come to pass. Therefore, 9/11 took place therefore revelation 18 must come to pass because God shook terribly the earth and therefore they began giving the loud and now they teach people the doctrine that the loud cry started at 9/11. They did not compare it to Testimonies Volume seven page 141 where the prophet of God makes it very clear that passing of the national Sunday law, then God will shake terribly the earth. They didn’t study line upon line. They are modern day Pharisees, individuals who are taking the words of God and claiming to be stickers for truth claiming to be followers of the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy but at the same time they are fading away from bible truth.
