A Book Review of A.T. Jones' - The Consecrated Way to Christian Perfection

In 1888 A. T. Jones gave a memorable series of sermons on righteousness by faith at the General Conference session of Seventh-day Adventists held in Minneapolis, Minnesota (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers pages 91-92).

Listen to a Bible study relating to the cause of Christ's death, a "Separation Principle".

At the commencement of the Latter rain movement in 1888, A.T. Jones gave memorable sermons regarding the well-needed subject of Righteousness by Faith, the Third Angel's message in verity, at the Minneapolis General Conference Meeting (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers page 91, Review and Herald April 1st, 1890).  Jones' phenomenal book The Consecrated Way to Christian Perfection drives the key points related to Christ in the form of Son of God (not temptable See James 1:13) and Son of man (temptable See Hebrews 4:15).  Its references are explosively righteous, imparting knowledge to all who patiently take note to A.T. Jones’ repetitive writing style.  It commences with a description of Christ in temporal, prophesied successive roles in relation to earth’s inhabitants:  Prophet, Priest and King.  However, its reference of Christ as Priest was never intended to be understood regarding any earthly Priesthood.  Jones draws a correlation to Christ as “Kingly Priest”, referencing the order of Melchisedec, the King of Salem, a King of peace (Genesis 14:18, Hebrews 6:20, 7:1-2).

Praise Him! Let us praise our Redeemer for His excellent greatness, as He shakes the earth with His straight testimony (Psalms 150:1-2, Isaiah 2:19-21, Haggai 2:6-7, Hebrews 12:26, Early Writings pages 269-271).  "Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord, to Him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens....Ascribe ye strength unto God:  His excellency is over Israel, and His strength is in the heavens."  Psalm 68:32-34 (Acts of the Apostles page 33).

Jones ties in the thought of a diadem in relationship to King David, identifying that the only King that was intended to be recognized was that of Christ and His righteous Kingship.  All earthly kingdoms were never God’s will.  “God and His protective hand watched over Israel, intending to prevent them from going into Babylonian captivity. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God was warning Israel about their consequence of disobedience, potential enslavement. God never intended for Israel to have a king, however, Israel's very first King Saul would not obey the prophet of the Lord, Samuel. King Saul, King David, King Solomon and King Rehoboam were all disobedient. The consequence of not abiding in God's ways is that by the third or fourth generation, God's judgment will visit the seed of those which continue in disobedience (Exodus 20:5). By the fourth king, Israel was judged and the monarchy was split into two, never to be reunified again. Israel was determined to have an earthly king and monarchy even with God's forewarning of its consequences. Similarly, within Adventism the 1859 onset of a laodicean condition was as a result of disobedience and the rejection of the gospel since the Fall of 1844, the Great Disappointment (Testimonies for the Church Volume 1 page 186)” (A Soul Sealed at Character Perfection page 42).

Christ with His phenomenal greatness will be returning as King of Kings and Lord of Lords:  and, He will return to reap His subjects who will reign with Him eternally.  Will you be among them? (See Daniel 7:18, Mark 4:29, Revelation 14:14-16, 20:6, 22:5).

Christ was the only begotten Son of God, and He is God; the express image of God, exalted in Heaven (Hebrews 1:1-8).  While in heaven, the nature of Christ was the nature of God, by inheritance, as He was created above angels (Hebrews 1:4).

Because of Adam’s sin, his reproductive-line became the subject of death, as the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).  Christ, knowing no sin, was made sin because He made Himself subject to death as the second and last Adam (1Corinthians 15:45, Hebrews 6:23, James 1:15).  He reconciled man from the sin issue, being born of a woman, made under the law, not being ashamed to be called mankind’s brethren (Galatians 4:4, Colossians 1:21, Romans 5:10, 2Corinthians 5:18-20).  Offering them glorified positions through His redemptive, reconciling act of benevolence, Christ bought His subjects back, a priceless redemptive act (A.T. Jones page 17).

As Son of God, Christ was higher than the angels and as Son of man He was made lower than the angels (Hebrews 1 and 2).   Hebrews 2 expounds on this fact that Yeshua met mankind right at the “sin problem”, becoming “Emmanuel” or “God with us” (Matthew 1:23, Romans 8:1-4, A Soul Sealed at Character Perfection page 101).   Christ can sanctify and He became one with those that He sanctifies (Ezekiel 20:12, Hebrews 2:11).  Fear is caused from the sin problem, and it can be seen in the act of Adam and Eve running and hiding their “nakedness” or “laodicean condition” (Genesis 3:8, Revelation 3:14-18, A Soul Sealed at Character Perfection page 59).

Jones highlights that Christ entered into an eternal covenant with Abraham, as a blood-brother, redeeming His inheritance; an act that was more commonly practiced among Ancient Hebrews known as the “law of redemption to man and their inheritances” (Genesis 15:8-18, Jeremiah 34:18-19, Ruth 2:20, 3:9, 12, 13, 4:14).  Christ took on the seed of Abraham, confirming an everlasting covenant (Genesis 15:18, Hebrews 2:16).

While on sinful, fallen planet earth, Christ (as the Son of man) took on the nature of fallen man, feeling the pull of sin, and He was tempted just as fallen man is—a true risk was taken:  and, He is able to relieve those that choose Him as a personal Redeemer and Savior.  Most important, Yeshua humbly covered His divinity with His humanity one hundred percent, and He became weak just as we are, only able to overcome sin by way of God the Father who dwelled in Him and “doeth the works” (John 14:10, Hebrews 4:15). Therefore, mankind, (by way of Christ's righteous garments) must overcome sin today, as it is the only way to enter God's eternal kingdom:  and, those who will be among the 144,000 will be granted precious seats (above angels) at the Throne of God for eternity (Ephesians 2:8-10, Revelation 3:21).

Does the death of birds and fish within Arkansas point to the ripening of sin?

Sin when it is finished bringeth forth death (James 1:15)

Video: Prophecy fulfillment within America points to the fall of Spiritual Babylon

Prophecy fulfillment within America points to the fall of Spiritual Babylon (Rev 18:1-4).

Listen to a Bible Study regarding sin's degenerative functionability.

Recent news regarding a multitude of birds and fish perishing in Arkansas (United States of America) points to a fulfillment of prophecy regarding the fallen kingdom of spiritual Babylon (Revelation 18:1-4).  More specifically, since the people of God are becoming fixed "spiritually" and "intellectually" in Christ; God is permitting the "destroying angel" Satan to exercise his power: as Yahweh gradually loosens the winds of strife (Revelation 7:1-3, 9:11, The Faith I live by page 287, A Soul Sealed at Character Perfection page 50).  Since God is self-sacrificing, righteous and just, He must permit the revelation of the “god” of spiritual Babylon to be tested.  Satan’s government of sin and selfishness reflects spiritual Babylon.  Within this fallen world, sin has caused sin-sickness and the degeneration of mankind to multiply rapidly, leading to DEATH (James 1:15).  Mankind has suffered tremendously within fallen planet earth:  and, their only Redeemer is Christ Jesus, the second and last Adam (1Corinthians 15:45).

The Deceiver, Satan, has formulated two Worldwide erroneous Judgment Days: May 21, 2011 and December 21, 2012. Such deceptions, once accepted, function as delaying mechanisms, providing a false sense of security, de-emphasizing the priority of urgent well-needed Character Perfecting goals and Victory over sin (Matthew 5:48, 1John 3:9). "But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father" (Matthew 24:35-37, Mark 13:32-37). "When life is going on in its unvarying round; when men are absorbed in pleasure, in business, in traffic, in money-making; when religious leaders are magnifying the world's progress and enlightenment, and the people are lulled in a false security--then, as the midnight thief steals within the unguarded dwelling, so shall sudden destruction come upon the careless and ungodly, "and they shall not escape."--GC 38 (1911)" [Last Day Events page 233 paragraph 4].

While de-popularizing and ridiculing the pursuit of undefiled biblical Truth and its "Berean-minded" Seekers, Satan has darkened the minds of human beings concerning God’s Character and Law with lies and false accusations (Isaiah 8:20, Acts 17:10-11, Revelation 12:17, 14:12). However, it remains clear that Satan is a deceiver, liar and murderer from the beginning (John 8:44, Revelation 12:9). Satan has represented God’s law of love falsely as a law of selfishness, declaring that mankind should instead obey the precepts of self-righteousness. Concerning the fall of Adam and Eve, Satan has made claims that God is responsible for sin, destruction and death. Christ entered our world to unveil satanic deceptions, exposing that “...God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). 1 John 5:3 reveals that we must keep His Ten Commandments, and that they are not grievous, revealing that God is love and His nature is love (1John 4:8, 16). Satan suggested that there is darkness in God and that His Ten Commandments are grievous, and thus in Revelations 12:9 we learn that Satan is a deceiver, misguiding the entire world regarding the Ten Commandments, the Character of God. The Great Deceiver has caused a wrong concept of God’s law. Satan at the origin of the mystery of iniquity claimed that there is darkness in God; however, Christ came to reveal eternal truth that the Ten Commandments [God's Immutable Character Transcript] are to be kept, as they are not grievous (Exodus 20).

Satan has misrepresented God’s law of love as a law of selfishness, suggesting that God is a dictator, disallowing freedom of choice. The Great deceiver has minimized the issue of sin, portraying God as an unjust Creator who is dark and persecutory. Christ came however, to reveal the light of God’s unchanging love. Revealing that our Creator is truly ADORABLE, God has provided mankind with freedom of choice, allowing the development of genuine character and happiness. Creating humans as robots would not have provided spontaneity and the output of genuine love. God gave mankind genuine freedom of choice, allowing mankind to choose their behaviors, its results and consequences.

Sin is destructive. Fallen nature sadly may perceive sin as being sweet and appealing, however, by principle, sin separates righteousness and wisdom from power. All the powers made by God, are made under the control of wisdom and righteousness. Whenever power is separated from wisdom and righteousness, it becomes perverted and prone to disaster. Before the flood and before the fall of man, no hurricanes and storms were present. All power was under the righteous power of God, every creative power worked perfectly under infinite righteousness, producing only good. When Adam voted Satan’s government into planet earth, sin began to separate power from wisdom and righteousness. Wisdom is the righteous use of power to produce good. Sin separates power from wisdom and righteousness fully due to its falsifying, perverting nature (Romans 6:23, James 1:15, 1 John 3:4).

Natural disasters are a direct result of satanic sin, controlling the world with perverted power, resulting in disaster (Revelation 16:1-21). Similar to the human body, we have organs that require God’s power to control its function in perfection, protecting it from destruction and death. Romans 5:12 proves that disease and human death, are as the result of sin. Sadly, humankind’s act of diverting from the righteous and wise power of God caused self-destruction, leading into death. Mankind’s perverted, sinful diet and lifestyle choices have caused human destruction and consequential death. Romans 6:23 edifies that “… the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”.

Sin is a malignant contagion. Although Satan presents sin as attractive and appealing to the senses, sin is malignant and produces death, perverting perfect wisdom and righteousness in God's creations. Satan camouflages the cancerous disease of sin by deceiving the masses, but sin ultimately produces death (James 1:15). Selfishness and self-exaltation are principles of Satan's worldly governments. God is love (1John 4:8, 16). It was God’s intention that all of God’s creations live under the complete righteous power of unchanging, eternal love (Romans 1:20, 5:5). The state of planet earth today can be attributed to selfishness and self-exaltation, a principle of Satan’s spiritual kingdoms and government. God intended that His creations would live under the provisions of His perfect, eternal, self-sacrificing government. However, at the point of Adam’s disobedience, selfishness entered the universe.

Originating in Heaven, the conflict between God and Satan’s government has become localized on planet earth and freewill permits mankind to choose righteousness or sin (A Soul Sealed at Character Perfection chapter 10).  If one chooses God’s government and righteous power, they will receive eternal life, however, conversely if one chooses selfishness, Satan’s government, a perverted power, they will taste the second death (Revelation 20:14). John 1:15 edifies that sin is like a cancer, resulting only in death. The world reflects sin as sweet and attractive, causing worldians to believe that God is a destroyer interrupting their fun, a deceptive teaching of Satan (Revelations 12:9). God is unchanging and the use of force contrasts His Divine Principles (see below references):

"And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon [as per Strong's Concordance Hebrew, meaning destroying angel], but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon [as per Strong's Concordance Greek, meaning destroying angel]" (Revelation 9:11).

"The exercise of force is contrary to the principles of God's government; He desires only the service of love; and love cannot be commanded; it cannot be won by force or authority" (Desire of Ages page 22).

"God could have destroyed Satan and his sympathizers as easily as one can cast a pebble to the earth; but He did not do this. Rebellion was not to be overcome by force. Compelling power is found only under Satan's government" (Desire of Ages page 759).

"It is thus that the great deceiver seeks to conceal his own work. By stubborn rejection of divine love and mercy, the Jews had caused the protection of God to be withdrawn from them, and Satan was permitted to rule them according to his will" (Great Controversy page 35).

Undeniably, sin is malignant requiring a cure. Christ Jesus is the sole cure for sin, allowing the unselfish, infinite, eternal love of God to deliver mankind from the bondage, darkness and selfishness of sin. Christ achieved our victory over iniquity, as He was born into sinful fallen flesh, the second and last Adam, embracing all mankind, resisting temptation; and remaining fully under the will and control of His Father’s love (John 16:33, Hebrews 4:15). Christ exercised complete faith, perfectly exhibiting the love of God for us, tasting the second death for the righteous, setting His saints free while preserving their positions in His eternal kingdom (John 3:15, Revelation 3:21). By faith, those who obey and receive God’s mercy will be delivered from the perversion of sin and its deceptive unrighteous powers. The University of Heaven will be a wonderful experience for those who choose to align with God’s righteous empowering government, receiving wisdom and the perfect, infinite power of God (Romans 1:20, 2Peter 3:18). Christ’s righteousness is a free gift (Philippians 3:9-11). Galatians 5:6 edifies that faith works through perfect love, as we fully surrender to God, keeping His non-grievous Ten Commandments, the Decalogue, written with the finger of God (Exodus 20, 31:18).

God’s remnant will keep His character transcript, the Ten Commandments, adhering to perfect righteous power, love and wisdom, abstaining from selfish principles and the perverted power of sin that results in death (Deuteronomy 6:4, Proverbs 8:22-36, John 1:1-3,14, Romans 1:16-20, 5:1-5, 1Corinthians 1:30). Christ came to unveil all satanic deceptions, revealing that God is complete light and within Him there is no darkness (1John 1:5). God’s love is eternal, infinite and unconditional: it is a Love that made a supreme sacrifice, as God sacrificed His only begotten Son for the cause of sin in our planet earth (John 3:16). Overcomers thus require God’s perfect sin-remedy, which separates us from the condition of the world today, a planet contaminated with iniquity (Revelation 2:7, 3:21). Mankind must thus love each other, while clothed with Christ’s perfect righteousness. God is not the author of sin or death, but He is the Author and finisher of our faith, granting all complete sovereignty, a plan of salvation centered in Jesus Christ, bringing those who choose to accept Him back to righteousness, the Law of Love, the Spirit of Beneficence (Romans 5:5, Hebrews 12:2, Steps to Christ page 77, Desire of Ages page 21).

Henceforth, while engaged in God's willful actions and behaviors, may we all remain fixed on Christ, receiving His seal in our foreheads, preparing for translation (1Corinthians 15:51-53, Revelation 14:1).

The Hidden Agenda Behind Global Warming Deception

The Hidden Agenda Behind Global Warming Deception

By Grant R. Jeffrey

Humanity faces an unprecedented danger—the global warming crisis. Our social, economic, and political freedoms now face the greatest threat in our generation.

The danger is the massive “global warming alarmist” campaign that attempts to impose socialistic, globalist control over nations, businesses, and your lifestyle.

Globalists and socialists present their progressive agenda as the answer to the perceived threat of man-made global warming. Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) alarmists claim that increasing global temperatures are caused primarily by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels.

Former Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who grew up under communism, warned that the environmental movement has been hijacked by socialist-communists who see this “green movement” to save earth as the perfect way to disguise their real agenda: to enslave their fellow citizens through environmental laws and regulations that will control every aspect of their lives, work and freedom.

He wrote: “Today’s debate about global warming is essentially a debate about freedom. The environmentalists would like to mastermind each and every possible (and impossible) aspect of our lives.”

The globalist think tank, the Club of Rome, published in 1993 “The First Global Revolution” that clearly outlined the global elite’s plans to use the invented crisis of “global warming” to stampede humanity toward their hidden goal—global, socialist government. The chilling language reveals the cynical propaganda plans of those who seek to impose global, socialist government on everyone.
“In searching for a common enemy against whom we can unite, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine, and the like would fit the bill. In their totality and their interactions these phenomena do constitute a common threat, which must be confronted by everyone together.”

Global warming policies will inevitably reduce our standard of living while creating massive new regulatory powers over our private lives and business.

Will the U.N. IPCC’s proposed solution to decrease CO2 significantly reduce the global temperature by 2100? The answer is no.

Scientists who support the Kyoto climate policies admit the proposed reduction of CO2 over 90 years will reduce expected temperatures by only one-third of 1 degree Fahrenheit by 2100 after a century of massive economic deprivation and the lowering of American’s standard of living.

The release of thousands of computer data files and e-mails from the U.K.’s prestigious Climate Research Unit revealed exaggeration, data manipulation, and deletion of files that has caused many to question AGW alarmism.

What is the motivation to embrace radical policies of energy reduction, huge carbon taxes, and severe limitations of the economic freedom of governments, companies, and individual citizens? Peter Foster wrote in Canada’s National Post, “Leftists are inclined to believe in climate change because its ‘solutions’—central control and wealth redistribution—are things they already desire.”

The U.N.’s IPCC predictions of man-made global warming depend entirely on computer climate models that are unable to accurately predict future climate change. General circulation models (GCM) being run at climate study centers are the best tools available to calculate primarily how increases in carbon dioxide might impact future temperature levels between now and 2100.

Although the sun is the major energy engine of our solar system, the computer climate models cannot yet account for solar radiation. However, attempting to accurately predict the Earth’s future climate in 2100 without accounting for the influence of clouds, volcanoes, El Nino and solar radiation is virtually impossible.

Humans produce only 3 percent of the carbon dioxide annually. Even the U.N. IPCC admits that if humanity were to totally cease burning fossil fuels the reduction of C02 would not significantly lower temperatures.

The EPA’s false declaration that CO2 is a pollutant allows the government to regulate, tax, and control every aspect of your life.

Humanity’s contribution of carbon dioxide is so small that it is virtually impossible that our use of fossil fuels is the major cause of the perceived growth of global temperature by 1 degree Fahrenheit from 1860 till 1997.

Since 1998 the global temperature has continued to cool every year. Professor Phil Jones, head of the U.K.’s prestigious Climate Research Unit, was quoted in the Daily Mail, Feb. 14, 2010, “In the last 15 years there had been no ‘statistically significant’ warming.”

Remarkably, the continued cooling was not predicted by any of the U.N.’s IPCC computer climate models and has virtually erased the entire global warming that occurred during the last century returning global temperatures to the 1900 level.

It certainly is time to pause and reevaluate our climate science assumptions and proposed energy policies.

Lawyer posts new list of clergy accused of abuse

Church Abuse_3485371.jpg
Associated Press

Mitchell Garabedian, lawyer for numerous Boston-area clergy sex abuse victims, speaks at a news conference in Boston on Jan. 19, 2011, where he released a new list of Roman Catholic priests, laymen and members of religious orders accused of abusing parishioners.

By Christian Schiavone
BOSTON —

The Boston archdiocese is defending its decision not to publicize the names of deceased priests accused of abusing children after the names were made public by a lawyer who represented their alleged victims.

On Wednesday, Boston lawyer Mitchell Garabedian made public 19 names – 11 parish priests, a Catholic deacon and seven members of Catholic religious orders – saying they had been accused of sexual abuse but had never before been identified publicly that way.

In a statement, Kelly Lynch, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese, confirmed that the church had settled claims against the 11 priests and the deacon named Wednesday. She said all 12 are dead. The 11 priests were dead when they were first accused. The deacon from the South Shore was accused when he was still alive but he has since died, Lynch said.

“In cases when an accused priest is deceased, it is nearly impossible to conduct a thorough and fair investigation into a claim,” Lynch said in an e-mail. “Since all of the new names are deceased men, clearly no child was put at risk because these names were not in the public domain.”

Garabedian, who specializes in representing victims of clergy sex abuse, posted on his website the names of 117 parish priests, members of religious orders and Catholic lay people. Ninety-eight of the names had already been made public.

The 98 included 19 clergy members who were assigned to South Shore parishes at some point.

One of the steady complaints throughout the abuse tumult has been that Catholic bishops shuffled suspected priests from parish to parish without notifying police of the accusations.

The Patriot Ledger is not publishing the 19 names that had not already been made public. Three of those people – a priest, a deacon and a Jesuit associated with Boston College High School – had connections to the South Shore. Garabedian offered no information on what they had allegedly done, when and to whom. The Associated Press reported that all but three of the 19 are dead.

Garabedian, who said he has represented more than 750 victims of clergy sex abuse, said he posted the names of priests accused by his clients after waiting two years for the Boston archdiocese to make good on promises to publicly post its own list of “credibly accused” priests.

“The archdiocese has not done it, even though it said it would for about two years,” he said. “It’s necessary in order to allow the victims to heal and protect innocent children and notify the public.”

Victims’ advocates and lay reform groups have repeatedly asked the archdiocese to post such a list, as some other archdioceses around the country have done.

A year ago, Boston archdiocese spokesman Terrence Donilon told The Patriot Ledger that the archdiocese was working on a list and hoped to have it posted by the end of 2010.

“At this time, our work on this important undertaking is ongoing,” Lynch said in an e-mail Wednesday. “We continue to evaluate the complexities of this initiative, especially those associated with disclosing information relating to deceased priests or those accused of a crime, whose guilt or innocence has not been established, and the serious due-process concerns this presents for those accused.”

Another priest on the list who was deceased when he was first accused was associated with Boston College High School in Dorchester. A spokeswoman for the school said she could not comment on the allegations.

“This represents a very sad time in our school’s history,” school spokeswoman Michele O’Connor said. “We can only hope and pray for the healing of the victims.”

Anne Southwood, chairwoman of the Boston-area council of the lay reform group Voice of the Faithful, said posting priests’ names might help put more pressure on the archdiocese to release a more complete list.

“It’s important for survivors of clerical sex abuse to have some kind of closure,” said Southwood, a Marshfield resident. “I expect that this list might hurry along the process of the archdiocese presenting its own.”

U.S. Priest Found Dead in Brazil

Amplify’d from www.laht.com
RIO DE JANEIRO – A U.S. Catholic priest and academic was found dead with his hands tied and a cord around his neck in an apartment in the northeastern Brazilian city of Paulista, authorities said Tuesday.

The naked body of 72-year-old Ferdinand Azevedo was found Monday night by members of his congregation who had been trying to get in contact with him for several days and decided to go personally to look for him at the apartment, maintained by the Jesuit order to accommodate priests on individual retreats.

Despite the circumstances in which it was found, the body did not show any signs of violence or visible wounds, police said.

Police superintendent Morgana Alves said that an investigation to determine the cause of death had been launched and she added that she was still waiting for the results of the autopsy.

She refrained from providing any additional information about the case.

The incident occurred in Janga, a seaside suburb of Paulista located a few kilometers (miles) from Recife, the capital of the northeastern state of Pernambuco.

The body was in a kneeling position and in an advanced state of decomposition.

The priest, who had lived in Brazil since 1975 and came to be the regional head of the Jesuits in Pernambuco, each year took a 10-day retreat in Janga.

Azevedo was a researcher and professor at the department of Religious Sciences at the Universidad Carolica de Pernambuco, in Recife, and he coordinated the affiliated Father Nogueria Machado Research Institute.

A 1963 graduate of Gonzaga University, he earned a Master’s Degree in history from Loyola University of Los Angeles and a doctorate, also in history, from Catholic University in Washington.

Azevedo, who was ordained a priest in the Society of Jesus in 1970, in 1997 received the title of Pernambucan Citizen for his contribution to education in the state. EFE

Pope Shot, Obama Crucified at BBG

TORONTO, Jan. 20 /CNW/ - 'Persona Non Grata - The Veil of History' opens at the Bezpala Brown Gallery on February 5th. Peter Alexander Por, a Toronto artist of Hungarian decent, tells the
story of oppression, pain, suffering, persecution and death across 30
paintings and four sculptures. His first task was to refine the list of
despots to be included in the infamous portraits - for there are far
more than 30 to choose from - some expected, some perhaps not. It is a
coincidence but apt that news comes from Ireland of a Vatican letter
instructing Irish Archbishops to abandon their zero tolerance policy
against suspected priests/pedophiles in favour of Canon Law
administration. Pope Benedict XVI's portrait is riddled with bullet
holes, a less than subtle expression of the hurt and anger directed at
a Pontiff and an institution that has abandoned its flock, choosing to
focus on dogma while its subjects suffer and, in many instances, die
from its archaic policies. His predecessor, Pope John Paul II, is
portrayed as laden with a ball and chain, unable to break out of the
strictures that reinforce wrongdoing under the guise of spirituality.

The United States of America has not escaped Por's scalpel. The
vindictive, divisive and distorted hyperbole that has polarized
American discourse together with the avenues afforded corporate America
and lobbyists to forge Government policy have left President Obama a
victim, crucified in the wake of special and distorted interests. Por's
props - a pacifier and his image of Obama on the cross shown here convey a somewhat different "Audacity of Hope" than that parlayed
through Obama's writings.

While Obama is the victim, Bush is a perpetrator. As with all Por's
executors, Bush's face is but a white sketch covered with grid lines to
bring the viewer to focus on the eyes of the villain while taking note
of the estimated death toll etched numerically over his upper chest
from a war initiated on a fiction.

Judy Stoffman is one of a few art critics who were given the privilege
to preview what was then Por's work in progress. Stoffman noted, "It is
not easy to look at these pictures. The viewer's instinct is to turn
away. Portraiture is an aristocratic privilege. The image cannot help
ennoble the subject. Throughout centuries of Western art, it was the
great and the good and of course, the rich, who had their portraits
painted. It is a sort of honour to have an artist look closely at one's
face and try to discern the character therein. Why would an artist
waste his talent and attention on ignoble and depraved figures?"

She continues, "Peter Por has lived through dark times. Born before the
end of World War II in Hungary, when Hitler and Stalin were still
ripping up Europe, he is a contemporary of many of his subjects. They
have shadowed his life. Brought up as a Catholic, he is acutely
sensitive to the great struggle between good and evil in the world. The
existence of cruelty and murder offends him personally and he cannot
forget it. It is as though he lacks the protective skin that most
people have developed to be able to function."

The steely eyes of these evil masterminds together with the sheer
numbers their actions affected render this Exhibition thought provoking
and solemn - from the genocide of Rwanda to the killing fields of
Cambodia to the decades of Stalinism, Por looks back to look forward.
Join us for this solemn journey.

Vatican Opposed Mandatory Reporting of Abuse

Amplify’d from scienceblogs.com

The New York Times publishes the text of a letter from the Vatican to their leadership in Ireland, who had passed a policy of mandatory reporting of sexual abuse by priests to the police. Unsurprisingly, the Vatican didn't like that policy.

By 1996, an advisory committee of Irish bishops had drawn up a new policy that included "mandatory reporting" of suspected abusers to civil authorities. The letter, signed by Archbishop Luciano Storero, then the Vatican's apostolic nuncio -- or chief representative -- in Ireland, told the Irish bishops that the Vatican had reservations about mandatory reporting for both "moral and canonical" reasons. Archbishop Storero died in 2000.

This is yet another smoking gun showing that the Vatican long opposed mandatory reporting of sexual abuse by priests. We know that the current pope wrote a letter in 2001 telling bishops that they were to keep all such complaints within the church hierarchy only and not report them to the police.

And we know that in the specific case of a priest in California, the current pope wrote a letter opposing the defrocking of a priest even after he was convicted of lewd conduct with a minor and even after his local diocese had concluded that he must be removed from the church.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: The Catholic Church should be held to exactly the same standards that any teacher, police officer or doctor is held to. They are legally required to report cases of abuse to the police. And if priests and bishops fail to do so, they should be jailed as accessories after the fact.

Laying Down One's Life for the Pope

Laying Down One's Life for the Pope
GLOBAL ZENIT NEWS
Rome's Zenit News
By Edward Pentin

ROME, JAN. 20, 2011 (Zenit.org).- For 12 years, retired Swiss Guard Captain Roman Fringeli was fully trained and prepared to lay down his life for the Pope.

Between 1987 and 1999, he protected the soon-to-be Blessed John Paul II as one of his five personal bodyguards on papal trips -- a period of duty that involved 15 apostolic voyages to Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.

For three and a half of those years, Fringeli led the Swiss Guard contingent when John Paul travelled abroad. "If the circumstances were such, I would sacrifice myself for the Pope," he recalled. "This was always my thinking during the trips."

Originally from Basel in northern Switzerland, Fringeli left the ancient pontifical army over 10 years ago. But his enthusiasm remains and he is eager to share his happy -- and sometimes agonising -- experiences of those momentous visits.

He vividly recalls struggling to keep back a lunging crowd in Nairobi, shouting at the military in Mozambique to prevent a mass of people from getting too close to the Pope, and facing the daunting task of protecting the Pope in front of a million-strong crowd of faithful in Seoul.

"I remember in Rwanda, during Mass, we had a warning of an airborne terrorist attack," he said. "Can you imagine? And that was just four years before the genocide that took place there."

On another papal trip he was with the Pope on an old chartered plane as it made three aborted landing attempts in Lesotho because of fog. After diverting to Johannesburg, the papal party drove the five hours to Lesotho only to arrive to the sound of gunfire as special forces rescued a group of hostages. Pope John Paul II, in the capital Maseru to beatify the missionary priest Joseph Gérard, afterward visited some of the wounded in hospital. "That was a special trip, terrible -- John Paul II wanted to offer a message of peace and that happens," Fringeli recalled.

But perhaps his most disturbing visit was to Berlin in 1996. Anarchists protested wildly, throwing missiles at thePopemobile while others paraded naked as the Pope went past. "Suddenly, these crazy people started throwing the red balloons filled with paint at the windows of the popemobile," remembered Fringeli who was standing at the back of the Pope's vehicle, trying to ward the protesters off. "I was ashamed of Germany for what happened -- the police allowed the crowd to get too close to the popemobile and I told them to keep them away."

Benedict XVI will visit Berlin in September and some are concerned the same scenario might be repeated. "You never know with Berlin," Fringeli said. "You can expect crazy people, [but] the Pope is from Germany so that might help and it depends, maybe the police will do a better job of controlling the crowds." He said he was surprised that the German police seemed to be afraid to stop the crowd. "They didn't want to touch them, especially in Paderborn [the Pope's stop prior to Berlin] -- in Africa they used sticks to keep them away."

But in Africa, he found local security could be too tough. On John Paul II's 1995 trip to Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, he remembers seeing a mentally unstable man who had wandered in front of the popemobile. The police picked him up by his legs, let him drop to the ground "like a sack of potatoes" and then hurled him into the crowd. Fringeli still appears disturbed by it, calling it "terrible" and "a scandal."

No gun, no vest

Vatican protection for the Pope on papal trips has traditionally been provided by two plain clothed Swiss Guards, a captain and a corporal, and three Vatican Police. The rest of the protection is given over to local authorities who usually offer the Vatican security detail the use of a car.

During his period of service, Fringeli didn't wear a bullet proof jacket -- it would have been too heavy and "my protection was my body," he said. Nor did he carry a weapon. "What can you do with guns and a crowd?" he said. "You would kill many people, and the same applies here in St. Peter's Square basilica or at an audience."

Instead, he relied mostly on his eyesight and personal fitness. The former Swiss Guard showed me a photo of him dressed in a dark suit, walking next to John Paul II on a visit to Romania and squinting, his eyes trained on the surrounding crowds. "I'm always scanning around, looking for a sudden movement, someone running or jumping over the barricades," he said. "That was my task."

I asked him what he thought of the security breach in St. Peter's basilica during Midnight Mass in 2009, when a woman vaulted over the barriers, grabbed the Pope's cassock, and pulled him to the ground, taking some of the procession with him.

"You need to know that this happens in a split second," he said. "Normally it's the responsibility of the person on that side of the Pope, but it happened too quickly." Fringeli said he didn't want to teach others what to do, but instead of putting himself onto the woman, he would have tried to block her and keep her away. "It's a mistake to put yourself onto the person as there's a risk you'll take the Pope down with you, which is what happened." However, he insisted Vatican security is "very good" and better equipped than in his day.

Naturally, he has many fond memories of the late Pontiff, and is delighted at the news of his beatification. "For me John Paul II was a holy Pope -- as all popes of the last two or three centuries have been," he said. He stressed how John Paul II always said he was protected by Our Lady and that he put his survival from the attempt on his life in 1981 down to her intervention.

"He was a messenger for peace," he said. "Some have said it would have been better if he had stayed at the Vatican more and not travelled so much, but for the Pope these weren't exciting trips -- they had an intense schedule [that] lasted the whole day." And he remembered how some people walked for days from Zambia to Zimbabwe just to see him. John Paul II's 104 trips outside Italy, he said as a reminder, were also for those people, especially in poor countries, who would probably never make it to Rome.

Fringeli fondly recalled how John Paul II would always make a point of thanking his security staff at the end of each trip. In his younger days, however, Pope John Paul II's propensity for making spontaneous walkabouts did not always endear him to his bodyguards. "It wasn't always easy travelling with the Pope because you didn't know what he wanted to do that was outside of the programme," said the former Swiss Guardsman. "But experience helps you very much."

As for himself, Fringeli said that despite the demands of papal travel, he always found them deeply satisfying and his enthusiasm never waned. "It was strange," he said. "During the trip you'd get tired but at the end of it, I'd always be thinking: 'What could the next one be?' It was like a drug."

And he paid tribute to two key figures connected with the apostolic voyages: Cardinal Roberto Tucci, the longtime trip organizer whom he called "a great, great man," and Camillo Cibin, the late Vatican Police bodyguard, who continued to protect the Pontiff until he was 80.

"Without both of them," he said, "the Pope wouldn't have been able to make a trip."

Old Vatican Letter Stirs Pedophile Priest Cover-Up Allegations

by Maury Glover / FOX 9 News

MINNEAPOLIS - An old letter from the Vatican has surfaced that many say is the smoking gun, the strongest indication yet the Church tried to cover up the crimes of pedophile priests.

As an altar boy, Bob Swiderski was repeatedly sexually abused by a priest in Hector, Minnesota in the early 1960s. Now, he believes there’s proof the Catholic Church tried to cover up the crimes of pedophile priests.

"What I've been saying for 20-plus years is that they're not telling the truth,” Swiderski said. “They are creating hurdles and this just comes back and proves what my thoughts and my voice has been saying."

While making a documentary about the priest sexual abuse scandal in Ireland, a TV crew found a secret document from the Vatican to Irish bishops in the late 1990s.

The letter says the Vatican has “serious reservations” about reporting cases of abuse to police, and that if the bishops’ proposals were followed, the results could be “highly embarrassing and detrimental” to the Church and the bishops themselves.

The Vatican says the letter has been “deeply misunderstood” by the media, and it was meant to make sure bishops followed Church law to the letter when disciplining priests, so they couldn’t escape punishment on technical grounds.

But attorney Mike Finnegan, who works with well-known church abuse lawyer Jeffrey Anderson, says the letter is the smoking gun that shows the Vatican is legally responsible for concealing crimes by pedophile priests.

"What this document really shows is that is it the Vatican and the Pope have controlled the bishops and controlled everything that has gone on with priests that have sexually abused kids,” Finnegan said.

Wile some believe the letter will strengthen U.S. lawsuits against the Vatican, Swiderski hopes it prompts others who have been abused by priests to step out of the darkness and into the light.

CA high court paves way for release of friar files

By GILLIAN FLACCUS
The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- The California Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to review an appeals court decision to unseal the files of nine Franciscan friars accused of child molestation, meaning thousands of pages of potentially incriminating documents will be made public within weeks.

The order covers four categories of files kept by the religious order on the California friars, including psychological records, confidential papers and documents related to the defrocking of some of the men over sex abuse allegations, said Tim Hale, an attorney for plaintiffs whose lawsuits prompted the ruling.

The files are expected to contain records of the friars' sessions with therapists and psychotherapists, disciplinary files and defrocking paperwork - all things that could show how much the Franciscans knew about their employees' behavior and when they knew it.

In some cases, files related to the defrocking of priests and other clerics include correspondence between local religious leaders and the Vatican.

The Franciscans are disappointed with the ruling but are preparing for the papers to be released within three weeks as directed by the court's order, said Brian Brosnahan, an attorney for the Franciscans.

When the files become public, it will have a chilling effect on the willingness of future priests and others to be honest with therapists and psychologists about any incidents of molestation, said Robert Howie, an attorney representing six of the individual friars.

"They would be reluctant to reveal it to a person that their employer sent them to because it would be public if the employer was allowed to touch it," he said.

Twenty-five plaintiffs settled lawsuits for $28.4 million in 2006, and the agreement called for the release of confidential files.

Most of the accused friars, however, did not sign the settlement agreement.

A trial judge ruled that the public interest outweighed the friars' privacy rights, but six of the friars appealed.

The 2nd District Court of Appeal ruled last September that the papers could be made public.

"All citizens have a compelling interest in knowing if a prominent and powerful institution has cloaked in secrecy decades of sexual abuse," the court wrote in its opinion.

Six of the friars are still living and three are dead, Hale said.

Turkey recognized Armenians rejecting Vatican

The Turkish government rejected Vatican’s demand to give juridical status to the Catholic Church in Turkey despite 50 year long diplomatic relations between Ankara and Vatican.

“For now, it is not possible for us to meet the Vatican’s demands for a legal personality for the Catholic Church in Turkey,” Today’s Zaman quotes Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc.

Turkish authorities say that the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, the main agreement regulating minorities in Turkey, recognized only Jews, Armenians and Greek Orthodox communities. Roman, Catholics, Syriacs and Protestants were not recognized which means these communities have no legal rights.
