Somali Mother of Four Slaughtered for her Faith

Somali Mother of Four Slaughtered for her Faith
Al Shabaab militants carry out ritual slaying of Christian found to be ‘apostate.’
NAIROBI, Kenya, January 17 (CDN) —
A mother of four was killed for her Christian faith on Jan. 7 on the outskirts of Mogadishu, Somalia by Islamic extremists from al Shabaab militia, a relative said.

The relative, who requested anonymity, said Asha Mberwa, 36, was killed at 5:15 p.m. in Warbhigly village; the Islamic extremists from the insurgent group had arrested her outside her house the previous day at 8:30 a.m. She died when the militants cut her throat in front of villagers who came out of their homes as witnesses.

She is survived by her children – ages 12, 8, 6 and 4 – and her husband, who was not home at the time she was apprehended. They had married in 1993.

Her relative, whose location is also withheld for security reasons, said he had phoned her on Jan. 5 to try to make arrangements for moving her family out of the area. Al Shabaab extremists, who control large parts of Mogadishu, were able to monitor the conversation and confirm that she had become a Christian, he said.

He told Compass by phone that Mberwa feared that she and her family members’ lives were threatened.

“Asha had been receiving threatening messages” after al Shabaab monitored her previous communications with him, he said.

Her husband, Abdinazir Mohammed Hassan, fled to an unknown location. Mberwa’s relative said a “good Samaritan” in Mogadishu was caring for her four children. The traumatized children continue to weep and cry out for their mother, he said.

Al Shabaab insurgents control much of southern and central Somalia and have embarked on a campaign to rid the country of its hidden Christian population. With estimates of al Shabaab’s size ranging from 3,000 to 7,000, the insurgents seek to impose a strict version of sharia (Islamic law).

Al Shabaab was among several splinter groups that emerged after Ethiopian forces removed the Islamic Courts Union, a group of sharia courts, from power in Somalia in 2006. Said to have ties with al Qaeda, al Shabaab has been designated a terrorist organization by several western governments.

The transitional government in Mogadishu fighting to retain control of the country treats Christians little better than the al Shabaab insurgents do. While proclaiming himself a moderate, President Sheikh Sharif Sheik Ahmed has embraced a version of sharia that mandates the death penalty for those who leave Islam.

Health Bite: Fighting Those Viruses!

Amplify’d from www.amazingfacts.org

If you’re unfortunate enough to catch a cold or flu this season, here are some strategies to minimize symptoms and shorten their duration.

Note: Please consult with your physician before utilizing these natural remedies, especially if you have severe symptoms or have a special condition, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.

This article is adapted from the NEWSTART® Lifestyle Seminar. It first appeared in the January 2006 Inside Report.

Take a contrast shower.

At the first sign of a cold or flu, give yourself one of these. The sooner you do it, the more effective it is! This treatment increases the number of circulating white blood cells and can ward off a full-blown infection.

  • Turn the water as hot as you can tolerate (105 to 110° F).
  • After a few minutes, turn the cold water on. Start with a mild contrast. Jumping up and down and rubbing your skin while in the cold water will help. Leave the cold on for about 30 seconds. Never leave it on so long that you actually feel chilled. This will have an undesirable effect (if you feel chilled, turn the hot water back on until you feel warm; then try a shorter application of cold or milder temperature).
  • Repeat this contrast three times, ending with cold. Dry yourself briskly and go to bed for at least one hour. Repeat this treatment 1 to 2 times daily.

Note: If you have diabetes, heart disease, or other circulatory impairment, use only a very mild contrast.

Rest!

Continuing your normal level of activity usually results in worsened symptoms and a longer illness. Particularly if you have a fever, go to bed so that your body can do the work of healing without interference.

Avoid antibiotics.

Colds and influenza are caused by viruses. Antibiotics fight only bacterial infections such as strep throat. They can also upset the healthy bacterial balance of the digestive tract. Try an herbal preparation such as garlic, echinacea, or even Airborne Formula®. These can help the body fight infection without harmful side effects. (Use echinacea only when fighting an infection; otherwise it can lose its effectiveness.)

Take Vitamin C at the first sign of symptoms.

Vitamin C has been shown to reduce the severity of symptoms and shorten the duration of a cold or flu (one gm in the morning, 500 mg in the afternoon).

Eat simply.

Avoid sugars and fats and limit juices and fruit, especially dried fruit (citrus fruits are preferable). Eliminate dairy products, which aggravate mucus-related symptoms. Drink plenty of fluids. Water, soups, and broth are all suitable, up to three quarts a day.

Keep hands, feet, neck, and ears warmly clothed.

Blood flow to the nasal structures falls as the temperature of the extremities falls. Viruses prefer the resultant lower temperature and sluggish circulation of the nasal passages. This is why a chilled person has lowered resistance to upper respiratory infections.

Get fresh air, but avoid drafts.

Keep your room warm (68 to 72° F), but not hot. Do deep breathing exercises.

Get a little sun outdoors, but don’t allow yourself to get chilled.

Sunlight boosts the immune response and also raises beneficial hormones that will help you feel better.

Don’t be too eager to reduce a fever.

Fever is a defense mechanism the body uses to fight infection. If you feel chilled, you are in the heating stage of a fever. Take steps to warm yourself. When you feel hot and are sweating, you have moved into the cooling stage of the fever. This is often referred to as fever breaking.

For nasal congestion:

(1) Drink hot broth or hot tea, such as peppermint or ginger.

(2) Add plenty of garlic and onion to soups and eat while hot.

(3) Use saline nose drops: Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 1 cup warm water. Use with a clean eyedropper or nasal spray bottle.

(4) Use a water vaporizer with eucalyptus essence.

(5) Apply a hot sinus compress.

(6) Use “breathing strips” found in the First Aid section of drug stores.

For a sore throat:

(1) Gargle with salt water: 1/4 teaspoon salt to 1 cup warm water.

(2) Use zinc lozenges.

(3) Use a water vaporizer, especially at night.

(4) Apply a hot compress to the throat.

For a cough:

(1) Drink hot peppermint or ginger tea with a teaspoon of honey.

(2) Honey mixed with fresh lemon juice can also soothe a cough, but use sparingly.

(3) Use a water vaporizer with eucalyptus essence.

(4) Apply a hot chest pack.

Take an Acidophilus preparation.

This may help fight off viral and bacterial infections by ensuring an abundance of beneficial bacteria in the bowel.

Reduce stress.

Avoid dwelling on how bad you feel or how much you’re missing. Read light and uplifting material or listen to soothing music. According to research done at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, the more positive your atti- tude, the less severe your symptoms may be.

If symptoms are severe, see a physician.

Severe symptoms include a fever above 104° F or one of 102° F that lasts more than a day, severe or persistent sore throat, ear pain, stiff neck, wet chest sounds, colored mucus or sputum, a cough that lingers more than a week after other symptoms have cleared, etc. These symptoms may indicate a more serious illness.

Avoid spreading the infection to others.

Stay home and use disposable tissue to cover coughs and sneezes and for blowing your nose. Don’t prepare food for others, sit or stand close to others, and wash your hands frequently.

When you start feeling better, don’t shift back into full gear.

This usually results in a relapse. Make a gradual transition to normal activity.

Three former Church of England bishops were ordained as Roman Catholic priests on Saturday

Anglican bishops ordained as Catholic priests in London

Summary:
Three former Church of England bishops were ordained as Roman Catholic priests on Saturday.

Three former Church of England bishops who are opposed to the consecration of women bishops were ordained as Roman Catholic priests on Saturday, the first traditionalist Anglicans to take up an offer by Pope Benedict.

The three bishops were ordained at Westminster Cathedral in central London during a ceremony carried out by the head of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, the Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols.

They became the founding members of the world's first ordinariate, a Church subdivision proposed by the pope in 2009 to let traditionalists convert while keeping some Anglican traditions.

About 50 priests and 30 groups of parishioners from the Anglican mother church, the Church of England, are expected to follow in the first wave and enter full communion with Rome.

Defections by traditionalists were triggered by the Church of England's decision last year to consecrate women bishops.

"This is a unique moment and the Catholic community in England and Wales is privileged to be playing its part in this historic development in the life of the Universal Church," Nichols said in a statement ahead of the ordination.

In a homily during the ordination, the three were told they had an "important and demanding future."

Other groups of Anglicans in Australia and North America have expressed interest in the pope's offer, and other ordinariates are expected to be established in other parts of the world.

The pope's offer caused tension between Rome and the Church of England, where many felt the announcement was handled badly and sidelined their spiritual head, the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

Differences appeared to be smoothed over however during the first state papal visit to England and Wales last September when he was received warmly by Williams.

The Catholic Church has set up a fund of 250,000 pounds to help support the new ordinariate, which will be called the Personal Ordinariate of our Lady of Walsingham. Their patron will be the 19th century English convert John Henry Newman, whose beatification was proclaimed by the pope during his trip.

Those moving over to Rome are likely to have to share church buildings with their local diocesan Catholic church.

The three bishops, John Broadhurst, Andrew Burnham and Keith Newton, had to be ordained as Catholic priests because the Vatican does not recognise Anglican ordinations. Two retired bishops are set to follow.

The three will oversee the spiritual preparation of like-minded Anglican priests and lay people for their reception into the church in the spring.

"I do not see my reception into the Catholic Church as a radical break but part of the on-going pilgrimage of faith which began at my baptism," Newton, who will head up the ordinariate," said in a statement.

Married Anglican priests will be accepted but married bishops cannot retain their higher status.

Feds come knocking for home inspections

Some citizens outraged, calling probe 'illegal search and invasion' of property

LIFE WITH BIG BROTHER

By Bob Unruh

© 2011 WorldNetDaily

A sanitation district in Pennsylvania has notified homeowners that its representatives will be making personal visits to every structure served by its network of drainpipes because that's what the federal Environmental Protection Agency is demanding.

The letter informs homeowners the inspections will probably take only about 15 minutes, but that all properties "will be considered a source of clear water discharges until an inspection can be conducted."

The effort, according to officials at the Coplay Whitehall Sewer Authority, is to prevent water from sources such as sump pumps or downspouts from being channeled into a water treatment process.

But homeowners are concerned about the mandatory government inspections of their properties.

"I do consider this the equivalent of illegal search and invasion of my home without just cause and [it] establishes a situation where I am guilty and must prove innocence," one homeowner, who asked that his identity be withheld, told WND.

"This inspection is to determine if I am 'discharging' 'clean water' into the sewer system. At no point in the letter does it say exactly what will be looked at, (I guess leaky faucets will be a crime) what else may be being evaluated while my property is being inspected, what is on the 'check list' or report that is being done, and really exactly who is doing the inspection," he said.

Officials with the sanitation district confirmed that they dispatched the letter and said the inspections are being demanded by the EPA. However, officials at the regional EPA office and those at its Washington headquarters declined to respond to WND questions about the process or its goals.

The letter to homeowners said the district was served "with a United States Environmental Protection Agency Administration Order which requires elimination of all Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSOs) and the elimination of all clear water from entering each respective municipality's sanitary sewer system."

"The Administrative Order carries severe penalties and fines if compliance with the Order is not achieved," the letter said.

"In order to meet the requirements of the EPA Order, the CWSA finds it necessary to conduct door to door inspections of all properties connected to the CWSA system to ensure your property is not contributing clear water discharges to the sanitary sewer systems."

The letter warned that "failure by the CWSA to comply with the EPA order will result in fines and penalties levied against the CWSA which in turn will be passed on to CWSA customers through increased sanitary sewer rates."

The homeowner told WND, "I find myself becoming more and more angry as I process the ramifications of this whole issue. This may be just to look for 'clean water discharge' (what a joke – I wonder if they will look to see if I'm in the shower too long and not standing under the flow of water enough and I better not run the water for a glass of cold water), but this is, like the sexual assaults of the TSA, the beginning of accepting illegal and unwarranted searches.

"It is happening here, but from the letter I get the feeling that it is being done elsewhere with the goal of having the EPA visit every single home/apartment in America to collect who knows what information … and if this is for clean water, what will be next?" the homeowner said.

The sanitation district's own website confirms there apparently are other ways to obtain some information, since it describes how it "utilizes a 'state of the art' television inspection system, reviewing 30 miles of line/year to assure maintenance of an exemplary 'tight' system."

The district website confirms that there are 13,500 properties served by the "approximately 120 miles of line," meaning that the entire system could be reviewed once every four years with the separate system it uses.

It advises that "rainwater, downspouts, basement drains and sump pump discharges" should not be connected or piped into the sanitary district's drains.

Crime Former GOP Congressional Candidate Arrested for Threats in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A woman who ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress last year has been charged with making threats against Indiana judges on her Facebook account.

Fifty-one-year-old Cheryl Allen of Martinsville, Ind., was being held on $100,000 bond Saturday. She was arrested Thursday on eight felony counts of intimidation.

Prosecutor Steve Sonnega says he was among the targets and turned over the investigation to state police and a special prosecutor. He says he decided to err on the side of caution after last week’s shootings in Arizona that wounded U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed six others.

Allen maintained her innocence at a court hearing Friday.

Police say Allen posted threats against four local judges and other officials Monday.

Allen said Friday she wasn’t threatening anyone. She told the court she has been hospitalized once for mental issues, but nothing was wrong with her. During Thursday’s probable cause court hearing, ISP officials say Allen was a clear and present threat.

Allen has made Facebook friends with nearly 300 people including both state and local politicians. Her alleged victims include the Morgan County prosecutor who asked state police to get involved. Detectives say she posted serious bodily threats against the prosecutor, other elected officials and staff personnel.

“One day, I will have my revenge on your seeking so much revenge on me. Jane, Tom, Matt, Chris, Steve, Monte, Eric, Vickie, Carol, Larry, Debbie, William (Bill), Mike, Penny, etc.,” she wrote in one post.

In another posting, she threatened to blow up their offices.

“Right below that, it said, ‘I won’t have to lift a finger. One day you are sitting in your office…kaboom!” Allen said. “Yeah, I do believe that they will finally get it one of these days. Someday, somebody will, they will be sitting there and something will happen, they will finally get it.”

She stops short of saying that she will be the one that gives it to them. She says it is all about karma and a divine intervention.

Jesuits take D.C.

Don't forget, this isn't just talking about Roman Catholics. This is just individuals who graduated from a Jesuit University or College. Roman Catholics make up a much bigger percentage than this. This page is a mirror of this blog

Fifty-three members of the 112th Congress are alumni of the nation's twenty-eight Jesuit colleges and universities.  Thirty-five attained graduate or professional degrees from Jesuit universities. Twelve serve in the Senate and forty-one in the House.

Here are the Senators:

  • John Barrasso, (R-WY) Appointed 2007, Elected 2008, B.A. Georgetown University (1974) and M.D. Georgetown University (1978)

  • Scott Brown, (R-MA) Elected 2010, J.D. Boston College (1984)

  • Robert P. Casey, Jr., (D-PA) Elected 2006, B.A. College of the Holy Cross (1982)

  • Richard J. Durbin, (D-IL) Elected 1996, B.S.F.S. Georgetown University (1966) and J.D. Georgetown University (1969)

  • Michael (Mike) Johanns, (R-NB) Elected 2008, J.D. Creighton University (1974)

  • John F. Kerry, (D-MA) Elected 1984, J.D. Boston College (1976)

  • Patrick J. Leahy, (D-VT) Elected 1974, J.D. Georgetown University (1964)

  • Mark Steven Kirk, (R-IL) Elected 2010, J.D. Georgetown University (1992)

  • Robert Menendez, (D-NJ) Appointed & Elected 2006, B.A. Saint Peter's College (1976)

  • Barbara A. Mikulski, (D-MD) Elected 1986, B.A. Loyola University Maryland (1958)

  • Lisa Murkowski, (R-AK) Appointed 2002, Elected 2004, B..A. Georgetown University (1980)

  • Jim Webb, (D-VA) Elected 2006, J.D. Georgetown University (1975)

Jesuit alumni also serve as House leaders.  Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) graduated from Xavier University and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) graduated from Georgetown.  You can see the rest of the house alumni by following the link.

Georgetown University leads the way with eighteen alumni, followed by Boston College (7), and the College of the Holy Cross (4).  Four schools (Creighton University, Fordham University, Marquette University, and the University of Detroit Mercy) each have 3.

Not bad. Unfortunately, neither my alma mater not current employer make the list.

At least another thirty alumni serve in the Obama administration including

  • Department of Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates (Georgetown University, 1974, PhD)

  • Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet A. Napolitano (Santa Clara University, 1979, BA)

  • Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Leon E. Panetta (Santa Clara University, 1960, BA)

  • White House Chief of Staff William Daley (Loyola University Chicago, 1970, BA)

A few questions come to mind.

First, how does the percentage of Jesuit alumni serving in Congress today compare to previous sessions?  Is ten percent high? low?

Second, do individuals interested in public service choose to attend Jesuit colleges and universities or does the Ignatian experience cause them to pursue a life of public service?  Maybe we're doing something right.

Finally, how important is the Jesuit alumni network (current and former congressmen) in getting elected?  Are members of congress, in any way, more likely to work with each other because of their shared college experiences?
You can see a global list on Wikipedia that includes Externado San Jose and UCA alumnus Mauricio Funes.

ROTARY, FREEMASONRY AND THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

ROTARY, FREEMASONRY AND THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH Mirror of This Web Page

2

This badge was found by our historian colleague, Dr.  Wolfgang Ziegler and triggered off a search for its origin which has not yet been resolved.   The central part of what is otherwise a normal Rotary lapel badge, seems to show the symbols of Freemasonry, the set square and compasses, while the letter 'G' in the centre is also an indication of the Scottish Rite of Masonry. We know that many of the early Rotarians were Masons and  that, according to C.R. Hewitt in 'Towards My Neighbour', some Rotary clubs recruited exclusively from Freemasons until the practice was banned in the 1920s.  To date, no precise details of these links have been found in the archives of either body.

The relationship was a matter of some discussion and in February 1923, an article in 'The Rotary Wheel'  sought to allay fears among Rotarians who might think that their membership of the one could cause problems in the other.

However, many people who did not know much about these organisations, thought that Rotary was a form of Masonry.  This eventually led to a much more serious problem when the Catholic Church, which had long been an antagonist of Masonry, classed Rotary as a similar organisation.     Also see the Ziegler Collection 1G.K. Chesterton who was often a vocal critic of Rotary, was a Catholic convert. and his adherence to the sectarian line may have coloured his views.

The problems seem to have started in Spain about 1928 when  the Bishops of  Almeria, Leon,  Orense, Palencia and Tuy  laid charges that  Rotary is  "nothing else but a new satanic  organisation with the same background and teachings of masonry" and that "according to documents and reliable sources, Rotary is a suspected organisation, and should be considered as execrable and perverse". The Church also criticised and condemned Rotary for showing  a concept of life and of service without reference to church teaching.  Indeed, it seems that  they believed it a secret society with quasi-religious overtones as many in the Church thought was the case with Freemasonry.  For whatever reason, the Vatican took up the reins and  in 1929 issued a decree that "it is not expedient" for Catholic priests to participate in Rotary either as members or guests. This decree and its implications were worrying to the many Catholics in Rotary not the least the then President Tom Sutton who was himself a Catholic, and former Chancellor Germany Wilhelm Cuno, a member in Hamburg.

Critical and at times disparaging articles regularly appeared in Catholic newspapers, especially in the  'Civilta Cattolica' in Italy, and Tom Sutton went off to Rome to try to convince the Papal authorities that Rotary was not Masonic, and that it was a movement which was not in conflict with any Catholic teaching.

Sutton's attempts to convince the Secretary of State in the Vatican, Cardinal Gaspari, were fruitless and the anti-Rotary articles continued to be published.  An even more virulent article later appeared in Paris in 'La France Catholique' making allegations about both Paul Harris and the links between Rotary and Freemasonry, which were later reprinted in the Baltic paper 'Rytas'.

The factual errors could be, and promptly were shown to be false, and by 1933  there was a mood swing in the Vatican, perhaps partly occasioned by the number of prominent and influential Catholics throughout the world who were joining Rotary.  Priests were now allowed to use their discretion about attending or even joining Rotary.   Nevertheless, one of the results of the Church's attitude was the slow development of Rotary in some predominantly Catholic countries such as Ireland.

This uneasy peace continued until 1951 when another Vatican decree warned priests that they should not join Rotary and that "the faithful should be aware of seditious and suspected organisations".

By then, however, the world had changed and the decree caused an immediate angry response, among others from the then Catholic President of RI, Arthur Laqueux, and from the Rotarian Catholic Bishop of Fort Wayne, Indiana, who publicly declared  the decree "quite incomprehensible".

Fairly soon, the Vatican began to retract. The official newspaper 'Osservatore Romano' wrote "In some nations, because of a prevalent Masonic influx, the action of Rotary Clubs has conflicted with the activity and the needs of the Church.  It must be said, however, that such has not been the case in other nations where the attitude of Rotary has shown itself in practice tolerant and benevolent towards religious interests."

By the end of the decade, the Catholic Truth Society was able to declare that "Rotary is neither secret nor seditious".  It was nevertheless still regarded as a "society banned under pain of sin only"  and not of "sin and excommunication".  Gradually there was a thaw in relations between the Church and Rotary. In 1970 Pope Pius VI addressed Rotarians in Italy, and in 1979 Pope John Paul II spoke to the International Convention in Rome, praising some of Rotary's humanitarian programmes at a  special audience in the Vatican.  Later he accepted a Paul Harris Fellowship and a World Understanding and Peace Award from Rotary, while Catholic priests throughout the world were taking positions of authority, even serving as District Governors.

As Alvarez points out, it was not only Rotary that was condemned during the 1930s and 1940s.  The Lions Clubs and even the YMCA incurred the wrath of the Vatican. In fact, the condemnation of the Y.M.C.A. was even earlier in 1920 when it was described as "White Masonry", on the grounds that "such organisation, while showing special concern for the youth, corrupted their faith, teaching them a conception of life dispensing with the Church and all religious teachings. The Y.M.C.A. is contributing to the decay of the youth's faith, by affirming that its purpose  is to show them a conception of life without churches or religious confession".

Basil Lewis    Based on  Nicholl's 'The Golden Wheel',  Juan Alvarez's excellent analysis of 'Masonry in Latin America',  RIBI's 'The Rotary Wheel' and other published works. Also see, Rotarian Lodge #4195 image A letter on this subject from Paul Harris (left) The following was provided by RGHF historian Calum Thomson:  18 May 2006 Paul Harris said the following: "fraternity without rituals, passwords and secrets". Source - Jeffrey Charles: 'Service Clubs in American Society' chapter 1 entitled "From Fraternity to Service".
The quote is derived from Paul Harris' promotional brochures which were distributed to the early (potential) members of ROTARY/One.
Charles concludes his paragraph by stating "Harris' organization promised an informality and exclusivity that fraternalism could not match."

Further to the piece about Masons and Rotary

Prince Conti, District Governor of D46 (Italy) in 1928 wrote: "Lately a few Catholic papers have shown doubts as to the origin and the work of our Association; and worse than that, they have tried to trace relations between Rotary and Masonry. These doubts of the Catholic press are not in the least just, and many Catholic priests belong to Rotary. We are sorry that such doubts exist, but we are not troubled, because we know perfectly well that no tie exists between the two Associations, and that in all our manifestations there is not one single thing that is not compatible with our consciences as Catholics and Italians and Fascists.

As the General President, Harry Rogers declared at the International Convention at Ostend, no tie has ever existed, exists, or will ever exist between the two associations. As President of Italian Rotary I declare that I would not remain in this position one hour if I had any doubts on this subject.

In this extract from an article in 'Rotary Wheel' in December 1928, Prince Conti hints at the problems Rotary was encountering in Italy as it was in Spain and Ireland.

From RGHF senior historian Basil Lewis, UK, 15 July 2008

Pietro Brunoldi (with help from Wolfgang Ziegler) writes on 22 July 2008:

Prince Piero Ginori Conti was NOT a President of the Rotary in Italy, but simply  District Governor in 1928-29 (District 46), representing the district newborn in the year 1925. So, probably there was a misunderstanding (or bad translation) when he wrote  District Governor..... probably by someone who didn't know the meaning of DG and  interpreted it as President.

A Sicilian volcanic eruption photographed from the space station

Mount Etna, which has a long rap sheet of eruptions stretching back more than 2,700 years, is still at it. The 3,300-meter volcano on the island of Sicily remains a highly active volcano, erupting several times in just the past decade.

The restless volcano began oozing lava once again on January 12, according to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. No injuries were reported, according to United Press International, but Etna's plume did force the temporary closure of a Sicilian airport. Etna's activity has not always been so benign; a 1669 eruption killed an estimated 20,000 people.

As the International Space Station cruised over southern Europe on January 14, Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli of the European Space Agency got a firsthand look at his home country's tallest volcano. Nespoli snapped the above photograph from orbit, about 350 kilometers above Earth. Etna's plume is visible trailing off to the left; the landmass on the right side of the image is the tip of the Italian mainland.
