Living the Life of Faith

By Camron Schofield

Hebrews 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left [us] of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard [it].

Here was the song of Moses as the Israelites had just crossed the Red Sea. We find something by connecting scripture with scripture was a precious privilege offered to the Israelites at that time.

Exodus 15:13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people [which] thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided [them] in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.

15:14 The people shall hear, [and] be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.

15:15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

15:16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be [as] still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, [which] thou hast purchased.

15:17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, [in] the place, O LORD, [which] thou hast made for thee to dwell in, [in] the Sanctuary, O Lord, [which] thy hands have established.

15:18 The LORD shall reign for ever and ever.

Verse 17 denotes the privilege and opportunity for Israel. Gods promise to Abraham was that in the fourth generation his word and promise to Abraham was that he would inherit forever a habitation. God said he would fulfill it in that fourth generation. Through the works God did in Egypt his name was proclaimed around the whole earth as the Israelites proceeded out in Egypt. It was Gods intention to fulfil this song. That the very people that passed over the Red Sea would be planted in the mountain of God’s inheritance. The promises to Abraham were the promise to his seed and his seed was Jesus Christ. The inheritance of Jesus Christ was a earth made new and these people were to walk through the red sea into the world made new. We saw in our last study the parallels of them in their experience and us in ours today. The Israelites were tested on the Sabbath question and if they were able to keep the sabbath then God knew they would be fit for a holy and eternal habitation but they could not enter in because of unbelief. They came to mount Sinai and there God sought to ratify the Abraham covenant that he would walk and work in him that God would supply his righteousness but instead they said all that the Lord has said we will do it. Big mistake. We will do it was what they said. These things are written for our admonition and we want to be admonished.

Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

These wonderful works yet he says depart from me ye that work iniquity. What was the problem? The problem was we. We have done it. We will do it. That was the problem. God had been trying to teach the Israelites the same thing he told Abraham you are going to have a son but how could they have a son as his wife was barren. How could he have a son? How could God’s word ever be fulfilled? We have to do something they thought and Abrahams wife game him the maidservant. She gave birth to a son and it brought to the home bitterness and jealously. God came to Abraham you are going to have a son but Abraham was like, I’ve just had a son. That was not what God regarded as Abrahams son. When Abraham was required to take Isaac and slay him, God said take thy son, thy only son. This son produced by his own working was discountenanced by God. Abraham thought he had to do something. He thought his works were needed to affect the promise of God but God would have done it if he had let him. So it was with the Israelites and those in Christ’s second coming say we have done this and that all these wonderful works, we have done them. But at Mount Sinai as soon as they made that commitment the law entered. It was added because of the transgression. They failed and last study we saw what our labour is and our labour is to cease to cease form our own works. Israel had missed the point. He had taken them through various experiences in the wanderings to show them their incapability to deliver themselves from sin. He led them into the Red Sea and shut them up in a dead end. Have you ever been shut up in a dead end? Behind them the troops and before them Red Sea. They couldn’t deliver themselves and God opened the way. They came to the waters of Meribah and they were thirsty and the water was bitter but God made it sweet. They journeyed on and ran out of food and God rained bread form heaven. They needed water and from a dry rock in the desert God poured out the water of life. They couldn’t do a thing to provide themselves the necessities of life so God tried to show they could not provide for themselves the necessities for eternal life. He wanted to put them in the mountain of his inheritance in the place of his sanctuary but he is a consuming fire. In order to dwell in that place they needed to have a fitness, a righteousness in order to dwell in a righteous habitation.

They needed to be a glorious church not having spot or wrinkle but they should be holy and without blemish. Could they provide that for themselves? They thought they could. All that you have said we will do it. Time and time again they missed the point. God had tried to show them the futility of trying to trust themselves but like Abraham they thought they had to do something to save themselves. With Abraham was the promise that threw his line would come Jesus the saviour of the world. In him all the nations of the world would be blessed but he didn’t have a child and unless he had one to produce more children how can I be saved? How can this deliverer and redeemer of my sins be born if I don’t have a child? I have to do something to save myself and so he manipulated the circumstances and what do we have today? We have in the Middle East because of Abraham thinking he could affect his own salvation, we have the very thing between Jews and Arabs that is precipitating a third world war. Abraham learnt the lesson and Isaac was born but the Israelites never got it. They never got Isaiah 64:6. Do we get it today? Much of Christianity today does not get it and much that do deal with it in the wrong way.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Because that is the fact, this is Gods promise. Our righteousness is as filthy rags.

Isaiah 54:17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue [that] shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This [is] the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness [is] of me, saith the LORD.

Hebrews 3:17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? [was it] not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?

3:18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

3:19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

They could not enter in because of unbelief. They wouldn’t believe they couldn’t and wouldn’t believe that God could.

Hebrews 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his.

4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

As they couldn’t enter in back then we have opportunity today. This is our works. Our works is not to do our works because self wants to continuously rise up and say pick me I can do it. The old story of the red caboose was drilled into me. I can do it, I can do it. Wrong. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me but in my own strength forget it. To cease from our own works is where true rest is found.

This is our admonishment for today. The gospel was preached to them. Do you believe that? Weren’t they under a different dispensation? The gospel was preached to them. What is the gospel? This gospel was preached unto them.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

What is the gospel? It is the gospel of Christ, the power of God unto a fitness of that heavenly Canaan. This gospel was preached to the Israelites. They received bread from heaven, the heavenly manna.

John 6:32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

6:33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

6:34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

The bread from heaven. There in their desperate need other sustenance of life je was given. Then they needed water as they were thirsty.

Exodus 17:1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and [there was] no water for the people to drink.

17:2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

17:3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore [is] this [that] thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

17:4 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

17:5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

17:6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

What happened? Jesus was smitten. He said I will stand upon the rock and smite it. There flowed out form the side of Jesus Christ on the cross water and blood. Here was Jesus Christ smitten for the needs of the people, the sustenance of eternal life, of righteousness. They said is the Lord among us or not? A rock in the middle of the desert pouring out enough water to feed their cattle and sheep, the Lord was among them. But what kind of Lord was among them? We want to see how this gospel of Christ was preached to them.

Galatians 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

1:7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Apostle Paul preached the gospel but where did he preach the gospel from? From the bible? From the to. The writings of the Old Testament he preached the gospel. Do you know what the Berean’s did when he preached amongst them? They went home daily and searched the scriptures whether those things were so. What was the gospel of Christ which he preached from the to?

Galatians 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

3:4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if [it be] yet in vain.

3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, [doeth he it] by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

3:6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

3:7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, [saying], In thee shall all nations be blessed.

3:9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, [it is] evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

This gospel he got from the Old Testament as it was preached to the Israelites. Christ was set among them to teach that by the works of the law they couldn’t be justified. Only by faith could those who are justified live. The Israelites had it all played it out before them but they did not enter in because of unbelief. They were lacking in faith so God threw them out and forgot them. Did he? No he didn’t. He didn’t just cast them aside like that. He thought now I’m going to put you in a school I’m going to give you an institution that you can learn from. So he gave them the earthly sanctuary. Which was a shadow of that which was in the heaves.

Exodus 34:29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.

34:30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.

34:31 And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them.

34:32 And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai.

34:33 And [till] Moses had done speaking with them, he put a veil on his face.

34:34 But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the veil off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel [that] which he was commanded.

34:35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the veil upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

Moses talked with God face to face but the people did not have the faith. There was a veil upon their hearts. The veil Moses had to put on his face was for their sake because if he did not put a veil on his face each of them would have had to put a veil on their face. Their faces were veiled by unbelief. The simple things of God that he tried to teach were not comprehended so God had to give them something they could see in the hope they would see the things that were not seen but did they see them?

2 Corinthians 3:13 And not as Moses, [which] put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:

3:14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which [veil] is done away in Christ.

3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart.

Even though God gave them a sanctuary system, they never got the point. Through that system they still had the same opportunity of entering into rest but they didn’t. they were blinded. There was a veil over their minds. They couldn’t see the end of what was before them. They couldn’t grasp the reality of the type. The bread from heaven was something they could eat and they took it for granted it was going to be there every day. The water from the rock was for their thirst but it flowed and flowed and became normal. The sanctuary system was given as a shadow because of the shadow on the own hearts. A shadow is cast in the form of the shape of the reality. He hadn’t given up on them. He gave them not just the sanctuary system but a whole entire economy. Their whole entire lives were regulated to provide them with constant visual practical demonstrations of the unseen. The sin offering which was slain was to be a constant teach to them that the wages of sin is death. The blood of the innocent victim poured on the altar was to constantly teach them of the blood of Christ shed for the sins of the world. The flesh of some of those sacrifices was eaten like the bread from heaven was eaten. The flesh of Christ was given for the life of the world. Like the impartation of the righteousness of Christ, our sanctification as the blood flowed out from the victim, the imputation of righteousness, the justification, the laver of brass for the washing. The washing away of the past life of our own works and doings. The baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Then there was the table of shewbread in the most holy place and the candlesticks that represented the seven spirits of God.

The completeness of the Holy Spirit. Who takes of the things of Jesus and shows them unto us. The dress of the priests, there was total and complete covering from the neck right to the feet, a representation of the righteousness of Jesus Christ to cover the shame of our nakedness. Our wretched miserable poor blind and naked souls. I thank God for the dress reform. I thank God for the dress reform. I don’t do it because I am a Pharisee but because I am sinner. I am aware of my wretched my condition but not aware as I should but even in the home on my own I cover up because if I don’t I feel naked. Naked before the Lord and destitute of his grace. I am such a sinner I need the righteousness of Christ to cover my unrighteousness. I need every inch of his righteousness to cover every inch of my shame or I’m lost. Ever ordinance of the sanctuary and their whole entire economy was to teach them of these realities which would have been a reality if by faith they had laid hold of it. Every aspect of their life was regulated. Right to the minute they were constantly surrounded by representations of what God would do for them if they looked beyond the veil. God was trying to teach them that he was making sacrifices for them but instead they said yes we can do it. And day by day and year by year they slew their sacrifices thinking they were making sacrifices for him that he would be happy with them because of their wonderful works and they missed out. Are we missing out today? We are no different to them. It is natural for us to say all that the Lord has said I will do. It is a normal reaction which God caters for and today he daters for that. As proud self-important humans just like you see in children we say I will do it. Abraham did it. God does give us works. There are reformations that need to take place in our lives. Changes in our life need to be made but those works are to be mingled with faith. Faith is to be wrought with our works. Everything we do is to be bound up in the things of God. The scene is to be indissolubly dissolved in the unseen. There was a study by Paul Godfrey who described it in such a practical manner;

“God designed that everything around us would send messages to us of himself so where ever we looked would speak of him. Is that not what it is equated to? Someone waking up out of sleep? If we would wake up and say Lord, may I be part of the resurrection? Then you might look out of your window and you would see the sun rising and your mind would think;

Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the just [is] as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

“As you saw that, you would say Lord, may you please cause me to shine in your character as I live? You might consider you are in your house and it hasn’t fallen down and that the wise man built his house on the rock and it didn’t fall. Then you might think Lord help me to build my house upon the rock. Then you would hop out of bed and would get dressed and say Lord please cloth me your righteousness, please give me the garment of salvation that I might go out and no one would see my shame. As you dress yourself with these thoughts you would open the door and you would think Lord, help me to open my door when you knock at my heart because you do stand at the door and knock. Then as you open that door you would say Lord I’m opening my heart to you this morning, please come in and you would venture out of your room to have some breakfast and you would take the bread and you would say give me your bread, the bread of life this morning. Give me the sustenance that I may live by every word that proceeds out of your mouth. As you put your bread down, you might put oil on your bread and you would say Lord, give me the oil of your holy spirit. Then you would take the salt to put it on your bread and you would say Lord, let me be the salt of the earth this morning. If we would understand what God is trying to speak to us, we would have the most amazing devotional time in the morning. Our minds would be constantly looking at the physical and thinking of the invisible. That is what the scripture says, the visible things explain the invisible.” Paul Godfrey The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

This is a practical description of what our lives ought to be that with the requirements of God we are to see the unseen. Are we doing that? Are we living a reformed life to make God happy with me or am I living it so we can be happy with God. What is our motive? Because I have to? Because I think that if I do this then God will love me and in that day I can say look I did this and that? Do it because God loves you. He so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. Do what God requires of you because your faith is so weak that you need to be surrounded with reminders of God’s love around you. All the things he gives us today, requirements and ordinances of life are for the same purpose as of old where we might have constant visual reminders of his salvation. Do it because you are so slow of heart to believe. Do it that when you believe his commandments are not grievous, that this is the love of God, you will be encouraged and motivated. Do it because you believe. When we believe you will rejoice in every light that comes your way. Every standard of Gods kingdom will be appreciated and welcomed but not because of the thing itself but because of the unseen in the reality of it all. Because of what it represents. God gave the Israelites a beautiful economy. Nations since then have been picking bits out of them. The roman empire itself was so successful in battle it imitated the Israelites in the wilderness. If you find it hard to believe, hard for your faith to pierce beyond what you see, it is the hardest thing you will ever do, that you will at times need to make sacrifices as though the life blood has been taken out, even in that let your faith grasp the reality.

Philippians 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things [but] loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them [but] dung, that I may win Christ,

3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

3:11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

He counted everything he saw as but dung. But his prayer was that he would know him and the power of his resurrection and his sufferings. The fellowship of whose sufferings? The sufferings of Jesus. Do you ever feel that when God requires something of you, you find it hard as a bit of a hurt there? Does it hurt to give up your own ways? Let faith grasp the unseen. Whose sufferings are they? They are not your sufferings. What you are feeling is the shadow of the feelings of Jesus. Your experiences are the experiences of Jesus Christ. Will you get caught up in your little self or will you let this be reality? Jesus made our sins to be his sins. When you are feeling so unworthy and you feel that you cannot come before the throne of God and ask his forgiveness, remember the reality. The reality was that hung upon the cross and in the psalms it says I am a worm and a no man. My sins are more than the hairs of my head. My God, my God why has thou forsaken me? then he cried out father into thy hand do I commend my spirit. How could he say such a thing? How could he say into your hands I commend my spirit when I feel so deplorable. He was naked. God wouldn’t accept him naked would he? When there is mental affliction and you feel you are drowning in your own sorrows Jesus said;

Psalms 69:1 Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto [my] soul.

69:2 I sink in deep mire, where [there is] no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

69:3 I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

Who is speaking here?

Psalms 69:21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

69:20 Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked [for some] to take pity, but [there was] none; and for comforters, but I found none.

This is Jesus Christ.

Psalms 69:4 They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, [being] mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored [that] which I took not away.

69:5 O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.

69:6 Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.

Who is speaking? This is Jesus. Naked and feeling deplorable and totally sinful.

Psalm 69:13 But as for me, my prayer [is] unto thee, O LORD, [in] an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

When? In an acceptable time. When he was at rock bottom and he could do nothing that was the acceptable time. Have you ever met experiences in your life and you see you haven’t done anything right and you can see you can’t do anything right unless he helps you and you really want to? That is where the promised rest is. Right there. God was trying to teach the Israelites through their whole entire system that they couldn’t. they couldn’t deliver themselves. Everything had to demonstrate to them that by believing and acting on a belief in Jesus Christ. Enoch was not because God took him. He had the testimony that he pleased God. Why did he please God?

Psalms 51:16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give [it]: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

51:17 The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

God will not despise a broken and contrite hear.t when you break up as to how you have missed the point how you in your life have done the same thing as the Israelites, you missed the blessing, you fall broken at the foot of the cross be comforted God will not despise you. God finds no joy in the forms of service, the form of covering yourself or eating of right. Even in the form of keeping his law. That is not where he finds delight. He finds delight in a broken spirit. In whose sacrifice does he delight? The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. The sacrifices are acceptable to him. The word Jesus Christ which was from the beginning, the word which was and with God was made in the likeness of our sinful flesh. He took our exp on his self and he had to sacrifice to be obedient. This is a sacrifice of God which is acceptable when you are called to make sacrifice in your life what is your faith to lay hold of? Your sacrifice of Christ. He was in your exp, he was making the sacrifice. So when you are called to make sacrifice, it is his sacrifice. We know his prayer. He had to pray three times not my will but thine be done.

Hebrews 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

He was the what? He was the author. We are reading the book. We are only in our experiences looking at the type. We are only partaking of what he suffered. Would you believe that? Will you believe that even in your self-denial, in your painful sacrifices that it is a shadow of Jesus own sufferings? What you are going through, what you must past through, is like just reading the book. It is a shadow of his sufferings. When you enter into your sufferings, what a joy, because I am not looking at the seen but eh unseen. Not only am I looking at the unseen but I am feleing the unseen. Jesus Christ was a high priest who was touched with the feeling o four infirmities. When the word of God cuts across your path praise the Lord for the pain. What a joy it will be when it cuts across your path. More life blood to be sucked out, it is not mine it is his.

And of all the gifts that Heaven can bestow upon men, fellowship with Christ in His sufferings is the most weighty trust and the highest honor. {DA 224.5}

What rest is there by believing? The rest from ceasing from our own works. From ceasing to try and please God by our own efforts. As they say let go and let God. If you are called to make a sacrifice, there is no more sacrifice; it is a sacrifice of Jesus. Just think you will let go and let God. You will let him work and to od. Then there is nothing for you to worry about. Absolutely nothing. When you cease from your won works, and it is God to work and to do, you can honestly say I didn’t do it. If you didn’t do it then you don’t’ have to worry about what people will think and say and do in consequence. God will take care of that. Besides, it will be just another opportunity to partake of the fellowship with Christ in the perfection of his right doings. Sounds good doesn’t it? Stop dreaming. Wake up to the reality. Let faith lay hold of something practical. May God help us to do this?

Amen.

An Intelligent Foundation

Christian Fundamentalism in Action

By John Thiel

John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

4:24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.

The Bible contains an intelligent foundation and yet our present age in which we dwell both in the religious and social circles is a time of uncertainty. Nothing is definite. What has been believed in the past generation is no longer so distinctly believed. In fact they tell us we have to keep up with the times. Faith is held as a class opinion. Every denomination and organisation of Christianity has a different class of faith, a class of opinion. The variety of organisations claiming to be the church of God bewilders the intelligent mind. Impressions, opinions, imaginations feelings and notions govern conviction. A person is convicted by their own impressions, opinions, feelings and notions. They believe them to be part of their convictions. Christianity today is dependent on this nebula for its substantiation. It is a nebulae of euphoria that has no concrete power to hold you if you are an intelligent discerner. I want to explore the God and Christianity of the Bible that provides a secure foundation to base your conviction on. Jesus Christ was and still is today a fundamentalist.

John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, [then] are ye my disciples indeed;

8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Is truth relative? Truth is fundamental, it is unchangeable. It is truth and Jesus says if you will follow me you will know truth and there are no shady areas in truth, it is absolute. When Jesus was examined by Pilate, notice his fundamentalist expression.

John 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

Notice how Pilate reacted.

John 18:38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault [at all].

In other words, he had the same problem in that day as people have today. What is truth? All the different fabrications of doctrines that exited among the Jews at that time, the Pharisees, Sadducees and different companies that existed in Judaism confused the genuine seeker for truth and Jesus says I am the one upholding truth, I am the king of truth and that dilemma of fundamentalism that Pilate was having troubles with exists no different today. Here is a fundamental exercise that we can’t escape if we are going to be Disciples of Christ.

The Samaritans

John 4:20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

4:21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

4:24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.

Let us examine the depth of these words that Jesus is expressing. We are to realise what he was doing in reference certain worshippers, the Samaritans, this was a church and they were worshipping in Samaria a particular religious belief. He tells her straight out you worship you know not what. How would you like to be addressed like that by someone? You think you worship aright but you don’t know what you worship. What a fundamentalist mentality not tolerated today. He says the hour cometh and now is where truth worshippers will worship in sprit and in truth in neither mountain. Even the Jews with all their various different beliefs are not worshipping correctly because it is now that the Lord is looking for people that he is a spirit and they must worship him in spirit and in truth. What is Jesus referring to when he said God is a spirit? What does he mean that he is a spirit and we are to worship him in spirit and in truth?

1 Corinthians 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

When he talked about God being a spirit, what was he referring to? God is a spirit that knows. He knows the deep things, intelligent realities that are through the universe just like every human being is a spirit. When it is referring to the spirit it is the intelligent entity that knows. God is an intelligent entity, a spirit and in worshipping him we need to understand.

John 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

God wants us to know what he knows.

John 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

It is talking about knowledge, teaching and understanding and speaking things which are not mans but Gods wisdom.

John 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

To worship God in spirit and in truth means to discern spiritually.

John 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

God is an intelligent entity, he is a mind, he is a spirit and to worship God in spirit and in truth means to worship God as an intelligent entity having a mind that is receiving the mind of God and all that he wants to reveal to our mind. To worship him means to do so according to verse 16 that we have the mind of Christ. Jesus refers to this kind of worship.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

This is the first and great commandment. To worship God is to love him with all our heart and soul and mind. Your heart, the seat of your emotions, the mind the intellect, your body, soul and whole being this is what is meant to worship God in spirit and in truth and the mind, the intelligent part of us needs to be renewed by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

The mind needs to be renewed after the image after the image of him who created us. The natural man cannot understand the things of God. To worship him in spirit and truth is to have a mind in tune with his mind.

Colossians 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

3:10 And have put on the new [man], which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

God is a spirit and he created us in his own image and we are to be renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created us. God is a spirit and our worship must be substantiated by the mind and intelligence of God, an intelligent foundation of worship. It is this mind that God has given us that is to be the ruling and government factor in our person. It is very emphatic that we understand that there is a spirit in me that is an intelligent entity that must govern my whole being.

The tempted one needs to understand the true force of the will. This is the governing power in the nature of man–the power of decision, of choice. Everything depends on the right action of the will. Desires for goodness and purity are right, so far as they go; but if we stop here, they avail nothing. Many will go down to ruin while hoping and desiring to overcome their evil propensities. They do not yield the will to God. They do not choose to serve Him. {MH 176.1}

Whatever your future is, whatever you are going to do in life, it depends on your will.

God has given us the power of choice; it is ours to exercise. We cannot change our hearts, we cannot control our thoughts, our impulses, our affections. We cannot make ourselves pure, fit for God’s service. But we can choose to serve God, we can give Him our will; then He will work in us to will and to do according to His good pleasure. Thus our whole nature will be brought under the control of Christ. {MH 176.2}

Did you notice that the governing force that makes the difference in our life is the governing force of our will and that must be intelligently exercised in whichever path I choose to walk? If we are going to worship God in spirit and in truth and ensure our mind is correctly balanced then my will must be submissive to that intelligent will of God.

Through the right exercise of the will, an entire change may be made in the life. By yielding up the will to Christ, we ally ourselves with divine power. We receive strength from above to hold us steadfast. A pure and noble life, a life of victory over appetite and lust, is possible to everyone who will unite his weak, wavering human will to the omnipotent, unwavering will of God. {MH 176.3}

Here is the answer to all our problems whatever it is, here is the answer. I marvel how souls find it so difficult to understand true Christianity. With this mind that is bound together by the power of the will, to the mind of God we are enabled to think his thoughts after him. The disciples did this and that is why the true disciple of Jesus is a fundamentalist in a world of divergent mental opinions. There is a truth that is unbending that we need to be in harmony with if we are going to find sanity, a sure emotional foundation for our lives. The apostle and disciple identified this spirit concept.

1 Corinthians 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

There is no deviation, no maybes, we speak fundamental reality the things of the spirit of God.

1 Corinthians 2:4 And my speech and my preaching [was] not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

There is a fundamental truth, a practise of life that is unalterable and I am presenting it to you. It is not man’s opinion or enticing ways, it is an assurance that here is truth unadulterated. That is what the apostles spoke about.

1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

1:2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen [it], and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

Pure Truth Fellowship

We know what we believe, we have touched and handled it. We have seen it but we have a more sure word of prophecy which is a hugely intelligent confidence that is prophecy unadulterated that is light shining in as dark place so the day star may arise in your heart. Apostle Paul comes home with this statement in a world of variety of Christian opinion.

Galatians 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

If you differ from what we have taught he is accursed. That goes down well in today’s mentality? Who are you? Who do you think you are? That is what gets thrown at you by holding a firm distinct doctrine that is unbendable you are regarded as an extremist and fundamentalist and you are not a loving and lovable Christian.

Galatians 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

You and I today are being warned by Jesus. There are many people who really believe that Jesus is their Lord. Many and they do many wonderful things in the name of the Lord. What does Jesus say?

Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Can you trust your warm emotions to God? Can you trust your opinion, emotions, feelings, your imaginary picturing’s of God claiming to be your God? Can you trust it?

It is unsafe to trust to feelings or impressions; these are unreliable guides. God’s law is the only correct standard of holiness. It is by this law that character is to be judged. If an inquirer after salvation were to ask, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” the modern teachers of sanctification would answer, “Only believe that Jesus saves you.” But when Christ was asked this question He said, “What is written in the law? how readest thou?” And when the questioner replied, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, … and thy neighbour as thyself,” Jesus said, “Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.” Luke 10:26-28. {FLB 217.2}

No value is attached to a mere profession of faith in Christ; only the love which is shown by works is counted genuine. Yet it is love alone which in the sight of Heaven makes any act of value. . . . {FLB 217.3}

There are many statements in the Spirit of Prophecy that denote clearly that our faith is not an emotional faith. It is a faith that relies on a thus saith the Lord and nothing short of it. No matter how much I believe in Jesus, if my belief is not in harmony with a thus saith the Lord, he doesn’t know me. Somebody might say, I am promoting legalism but when it says we are to rely on the law and will of God, that does not do away with the precious gospel of Jesus Christ because the faith in Jesus Christ means I have to even practise what is written in reference to my surrender to him at the beautiful cross of Jesus. If it is not done the way that God had revealed it through his word, it is also of no value. Here is where the security lies to where you can rest your emotions. I have presented a found where my emotions can rest upon. If I have anything diff my emotions are totally irrelevant. What is the truth, the fundamental truth that is engaged in the precious comfort of salvation? When I read the following the statement I thought I must write it out and put it in my wallet to remind myself time and time again this intelligent activity that is required for you and me to be saved.

Blessed is the soul who can say, “I am guilty before God: but Jesus is my Advocate. I have transgressed His law. I cannot save myself; but I make the precious blood that was shed on Calvary all my plea. I am lost in Adam, but restored in Christ. God, who so loved the world as to give His only begotten Son to die, will not leave me to perish while repentant and in contrition of soul. He will not look upon me, for I am all unworthy; but He will look upon the face of His Anointed, He will look upon my Substitute and Surety, and listen to the plea of my Advocate, who died for my sin, that I might be made the righteousness of God in Him. By beholding Him I shall be changed into His image. I cannot change my own character, save by partaking of the grace of Him who is all goodness, righteousness, mercy, and truth. But by beholding Him, I shall catch His spirit, and be transformed into His likeness. The heart that is filled with the grace of Christ will be made manifest by its peace and joy; and where Christ abides, the character will become purified, elevated, ennobled, and glorified. {SD 120.2}

Did you see intelligence here? Did you see an intelligent foundation that there is an intelligent recognition that I am totally undone and guilty and no natural human mind is prepared to say that. We always fish for something that makes me feel good within myself. Egocentrism is the natural man. For you to say such a thing is the human intelligent mind is in tune with Gods mind. My intelligent mind has picked up the precious realities of the blood shed on Calvary. It has intelligently pursued Jesus in Gethsemane through to the resurrection and the intelligent mind says I am lost in Adam but I am restored in Christ. Can you see the intelligent security expressed? It doesn’t stop there like so many people do. The intelligent mind continues to behold something of Gods purity and righteousness, as he gazes upon the intelligent representation of God’s word he says I have to change, I can’t go to heaven the way I am. I cannot change my own character, it is an impossibility, I can’t change. By beholding him I shall catch his spirit and be transformed into his likeness. What a wonderful intelligent truth that I am not going to sit by and think I am going to be saved but it doesn’t matter what I’m doing. My character is horrible, intelligently you know that and as you discover your horrible character you realise I have to look away from that character and look upon him and his wonderful character and I know I’m going to be changed as I occupy my mind with that. That intelligent application and knowledge will change and give such security that we will not alter our path as we continue through the path of sanctification. No matter how bad we feel and the mistakes we make, we keep beholding the love of God and the heart keeps breaking and melting and it will change me and there will be peace and joy and this will produce a people that will be so consistent and fundamental that those who haven’t got it will judge them falsely. You and I have a fundamental security, an intelligent foundation in God’s word that unless we embrace we will not stand as the witnesses of Gods pure truth. We are called upon to pursue it intelligently as we have read so powerful in the book Sons and Daughters of God above.

The Security We Provide for the Onlooker

This is in reference to our test that we will be and are going through in reference to Sabbath violation when the despotic power will seek to compel us to violate..

While we will not violate the Sabbath, which a despotic power will seek to compel us to do, we will be wise in Christ—Christ’s wisdom—and not in our own spirit. A consistent, substantial, lovable Christian is a powerful argument for the truth. {CTr 329.3}

Only an intelligent mind clinging to the intelligent mind of God will be consistent in its tenacity to keep hanging onto the mercy and grace and God. It becomes a substance of things hoped for. It is so overwhelmed with the love of God is in own heart that no one no matter horrible they are will be mistreated by us. That will be a powerful argument for truth that is unchangeable and fundamental.

We must say no words that will do ourselves harm, for this would be bad enough, but when we speak words, and when we do presumptuous things that imperil the cause of God, we are doing a cruel work, for we give Satan advantage. We are not to be rash and impetuous, but always learning of Jesus and how to act in His Spirit, presenting the truth as it is in Jesus. . . . {CTr 329.3}

Can you trust something, a mind that speaks differently than your impressions, feelings and opinions? Have you learnt that yet? That you trust in a mind that speaks differently to your impressions, notions, feelings and opinions? Can you do it? God has proven that he can be trusted and it is very much the exercise of each one of us every day to rely upon the intelligence that is diff to my opinion, feelings, impressions and emotions. It is my prayer that we can rest all our being upon him who has so graciously given us that intelligent truth that I read about as the great atonement that was made for me in Jesus Christ. May God bless us to concrete and confirm our hold upon this intelligent foundation.

Amen.

THE CONSUMMATION OF THE EVERLASTING COVENANT

STUDY 14

The 1888 Revival

By John Thiel

The hymn we have just been singing ‘Weary of Earth’ reminds us of our mediation in the study of the experience of Gods people during the time of judgement when our sins are unveiled before us by the fact that we have fallen. Evil is ever with us day by day. Don’t you feel it? In spite of that mine ears hear the gracious tidings, repent, return, thou shalt be loosed of all. We want to really understand that voice and what he means when he says just repent and return, you will be loosed of all. Don’t doubt, cease restless will. Do you have a lonely strife?

Cease, restless will! thy lonely strife resign !

I know too well how little strength is mine ;

Grant me, dear Lord, Thy saving love to see !

I strive no more, I give myself to Thee.

What is the experience? A sense of hopeless failure. A sense and experience of falling and rising and falling again and rising and the oppression of the evil one. The experience among God’s people was what inspiration revealed that some will stumble and some will give heed to seducing spirits.

Some will stumble, some will give heed to seducing spirits; some will choose darkness rather than light because they are not true to God. Like their Master, those who are abiding in Christ will not fall nor be discouraged. {CTr 370.2}

This experience took place in Adventism from the time that the judgement commenced. What is the period of the judgement termed in the Bible? The period of Laodicea, the people of the judgement. This is what the true witness who witnesses to us reveals of the people of Laodicea. This is the experience and he knows it and he witnesses it to us.

Revelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

Who is this? The faithful and true witness. Who is he? The everlasting gospel agent the beginning of the creation of God. From the beginning of all creation, he is the one of the everlasting covenant. He knew you before you existed, he knows you from his own experience coming down to your experience. What does he say?

Revelation 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

In the experience of the advent people there are people in the leadership who are described here as it says the angel. He then says I’m not going to give up on you so quickly, you have fallen into this state. Even the rebellious he is prepared to still prevail with and so he does.

Revelation 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

In those stages of people falling in the time of the judgment, although they fall, although they become lukewarm, although they don’t know where they are, what does he do? He reveals the things that mar their life and he appeals to them don’t give up, I feel like spewing out and I will spew you out if you don’t change but please I want you to change. Buy of me that which will change you. Can we see and feel and hear the pleading of him to us? How soon after 1844 when the message was given the message the hour of Gods judgement is come before and up to 1844 and since then the second and third angel, how long after that did the experience of Laodicea commence, the experience of people dropping off? Some will do this and that and some will do the other and some will be taken. When did that commence?

As I have of late looked around to find the humble followers of the meek and lowly Jesus, my mind has been much exercised. Many who profess to be looking for the speedy coming of Christ are becoming conformed to this world and seek more earnestly the applause of those around them than the approbation of God. They are cold and formal, like the nominal churches from which they but a short time since separated. The words addressed to the Laodicean church describe their present condition perfectly. (See Revelation 3:14-20.) They are “neither cold nor hot,” but “lukewarm”. And unless they heed the counsel of the “faithful and true Witness,” and zealously repent and obtain “gold tried in the fire,” “white raiment,” and “eye-salve,” He will spew them out of His mouth. {EW 107.2}

Do you know when this was written? 1852. Less than ten years after 1844. The time of judgement became the experience of our last study. Why? Because it is a bit tedious to go through the experiences of recognition of my depraved condition and people would rather be in a state of sleepiness than to be in that state of experience. Don’t people want to be left alone? We are living in a time when they will heap unto themselves teachers having itching ears speaking smooth things. Is that what we are seeing? That is our experience. Do you like hearing the things that continually hold your sins before you? People hate me as I preach exactly what the word of God says and they think I am having a go of them. There are people that are no longer with us because of that and they have drifted into the world still claiming to be Gods people. This demise commenced just before 1852 and has deepened.

The church cannot measure herself by the world nor by the opinion of men nor by what she once was. Her faith and her position in the world as they now are must be compared with what they would have been if her course had been continually onward and upward. The church will be weighed in the balances of the sanctuary. If her moral character and spiritual state do not correspond with the benefits and blessings God has conferred upon her, she will be found wanting. The light has been shining clear and definite upon her pathway, and the light of 1882 calls her to an account. {5T 83.2}

She repeats again and again the Laodicean condition applies to us.

If her talents are unimproved, if her fruit is not perfect before God, if her light has become darkness, she is indeed found wanting. The knowledge of our state as God views it, seems to be hidden from us. {5T 83.2}

I don’t see it, he measures it and he reveals to us the things but do we want him to?

We see, but perceive not; we hear, but do not understand; and we rest as unconcerned as if the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, rested upon our sanctuary. We profess to know God, and to believe the truth, but in works deny Him. Our deeds are directly adverse to the principles of truth and righteousness, by which we profess to be governed. {5T 83.2}

We do hear but we don’t understand. That is the testimony of Jesus to the church of Laodicea. God sees this happening and as we have already established he doesn’t want the people to stay like that. He tells them their true condition and they say surely not and they murmur and complain they are being chopped and offended and the rest of it but God says I’m not trying to offend you or break you down, I’m trying to help you. Who did Jacob think the angel was that came to help him? An enemy and he fought with him. Jacobs’s trouble starts in essence before the close of probation but intensifies at the close of probation. God’s people are met by the angel already during the time of Jacob’s trouble. He is trying to bless them but they think he is an enemy. As he wants to help them out of this condition, at that time and maybe now as well for those who are standing on the platform of original Adventism in doctrine, we are standing are we not? Are we not going to be standing on the original platform of Adventism? He is talking to us as he is to them then. He says to them who are in this condition you need a revival. As he speaks these things and we become aware that I am not as I should be, we read we need revival.

Psalm 85:6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?

85:7 Show us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.

As you hear the testimony of Jesus of the church that has gone out in this demise, is this the language of your soul? I am in this sleepy condition and you know what it is like when you are really sleepy, I can’t get up, I think I will stay in bed longer. This is the mentality of Laodicea. I need something to stir me into action. Revive me again as I’m not rejoicing as I’m so crushed at my sinfulness. That is what Jesus has said.

A revival of true Godliness among us is the greatest and most urgent of all our needs. To seek this should be our first work.–Review and Herald, March 22, 1887. {ChS 41.4}

The condition had come to such a point that the need of revival was paramount, God did not want to spew his people out and therefore they needed revival.

A revival and a reformation must take place under the ministration of the Holy Spirit. Revival and reformation are two different things. Revival signifies a renewal of spiritual life, a quickening of the powers of mind and heart, a resurrection from the spiritual death. Reformation signifies a reorganization, a change in ideas and theories, habits and practices. Reformation will not bring forth the good fruit of righteousness unless it is connected with the revival of the Spirit. Revival and reformation are to do their appointed work, and in doing this work they must blend. Review and Herald, Feb. 25, 1902. {ChS 42.2}

You can’t think straight in the brain? It’s called der brain. What was needed in 1887 as a consequence of all the messages to Laodicea that revealed to them as God reveals in the time of judgment the things that mar our life? What did God do to revive that company in that condition?

The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through Elders Waggoner and Jones. {TM 91.2}

What was needed? A revival, a quickening of the mind that had become paralysed through Laodicean mentality.

This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God. Many had lost sight of Jesus. They needed to have their eyes directed to His divine person, His merits, and His changeless love for the human family. All power is given into His hands, that He may dispense rich gifts unto men, imparting the priceless gift of His own righteousness to the helpless human agent. This is the message that God commanded to be given to the world. It is the third angel’s message, which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, and attended with the outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure. {TM 91.2}

That is what was needed she said in 1887. When did the Lord give it? The next year. Isn’t it living? Can’t you appreciate it? Attend diligently to see the line up from 1888 through to our time the exact work of the Lord in this everlasting covenant gospel transaction for the people of the judgement. He gave the message that would quicken and awaken and what was the message? It was the uplifting of the saviour, the sacrifice of the sins of the world many people have made very little of the actual of the message of 1888. They look at the peripheries and that say it was the power of the Holy Spirit that came upon the people as a magician. They do not look at the actual uplifting of Jesus that came in the message and the uplifting of Jesus in living terms. As in 1888 there was need of a revival, do we need that now? Right here we need it and it must be rekindled right now. Do you need to know when you have fallen again and again? You see yourself in a true condition of depraved lukewarmness and you see that and you try to do it and you can’t recover yourself from it. What do you need to see? Especially when Satan whispers see how many times you’ve tried? See how absolutely hopeless you are? You’ve tried countless times and you’ve fallen flat on your face again. Your case is hopeless, he whispers that. Because the voice of Satan whispers that, and the Lord shows me my sins, we confuse the voice of Satan with the voice of God. We think God is an enemy, Jacobs’s trouble. We need to see Jesus when we are down there. Where do you see Jesus? Up there or when I am in the pit? If you see Jesus up there, you will say I’m never going to make it. He will try to reach his hand do you and you won’t be able to take hold of it. You need to see your totally depraved condition. This was the message of 1888. God doesn’t just start talking, he says listen to me.

Isaiah 51:1 Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD: look unto the rock [whence] ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit [whence] ye are digged.

51:2 Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah [that] bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.

51:3 For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

Here is this pit of an experience and what are we called upon to do? Look to the pit where thou wast hewed. You are in the pit again, look to where you came from in the first place. How did you get out of there? Look to the rock whence you are hewn. Who is our rock? Jesus. The pit and the rock, does that ring a bell? Where did our rock come to? Into the very pit didn’t he? Psalms 40, 69, and 22 were dwelt upon in 1888. When I first read them and I wanted to raise them up before the ministry it was as if they hadn’t heard those texts before and I was bamboozled. I said you claim to be the people of 1888 and you don’t know these texts? I was shaking my head wondering what was going on. The 1888 revival must be revived among us today.

Psalm 40:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, [and] established my goings.

Who is speaking? David? When I asked that question to a minister of the company I was with he said David. What did Jesus do when he was speaking to the people on the road to Emmaus? What did he speak of himself? From the Psalms and the prophets. The anathema mentality is in these people that don’t want to hear and believe this is he cried to him that saved him from death. Where is that written?

Hebrews 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

To him that could save him from death, what? He needed a saviour? An anathema. I have received flak in proclaiming that Jesus came and placed himself where he cried to be saved. I was told no he is our saviour, he didn’t need salvation. That is the mentality of a fallen ministry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit. Why is this important for you to see and understand?

Look to the Pit from Which You Are Dug, Look to the Rock

This is what it means;

Psalm 88:4 I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man [that hath] no strength:

Is that Laodicea? No strength, I’m sleeping I can’t get my head into action.

Psalm 88:5 Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.

88:6 Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.

88:7 Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted [me] with all thy waves.

Who is speaking? Jesus. Why do you need to know that? Do you feel like you are in the pits? As you are in the pits, what do you need to know? That Jesus was counted among you. Jesus was in the pit with you. And not just was but is. When you know how in the pit your experience is in this time in the period of the judgment, when you discover the depravity of your condition you must see the depravity of Jesus Christ with you because if you don’t you will never get out of the pit. This is the appeal of Jesus to us. Look at the plaintive cry of our high priest.

Lamentations 1:12 [Is it] nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted [me] in the day of his fierce anger.

Plaintively crying, is it nothing to you? Look what I’ve done for you.

Lamentations 1:13 From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate [and] faint all the day.

1:14 The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, [and] come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into [their] hands, [from whom] I am not able to rise up.

Today you understand the word wreathed very well don’t you. The sins are wreathed, what is a gene? A wreath correct? That spiral with all my genetic makeup and that is what the Father placed into the genetic makeup of the man Christ Jesus and stirred it up. They came up upon my neck. A person who’s heart is playing up has panic. It is a revelation of a heart condition when the throat is strangled, Jesus experienced that.

1:15 The Lord hath trodden under foot all my mighty [men] in the midst of me: he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men: the Lord hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, [as] in a winepress.

Remember the story by John Bunyan ‘The Holy War’ of Mansoul? All the mighty men in him, he trod them.

1:16 For these [things] I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.

Who is speaking? My Lord and Saviour. He is describing your and my experience in the pit. Look to the pit from where you are digged. The rock, who fell down in the pit with me. He himself needed to be placed on the rock. It says in Psalm 40 that more than the hairs of my head are my sins which the Lord wreathed. It perplexes me when I quote scripture in simple language it can’t be understood but when I read it out in simple language the ministers still persecute me.

How few have any conception of the anguish which rent the heart of the Son of God during His thirty years of life upon earth. The path from the manger to Calvary was shadowed by sorrow and grief. He was the Man of Sorrows, and endured such heartache as no human language can portray. {TMK 66.2}

If you go through heartache you can’t tell anyone, he went through worse.

He could have said in truth, “Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow” (Lamentations 1:12). His suffering was the deepest anguish of the soul; and what man could have sympathy with the soul anguish of the Son of the infinite God? {TMK 66.2}

He was alone. You think you are alone? In all reality Jesus was alone because you can never enter into the enormity of his anguish when he was in that situation but you can know he knows your anguish because he had yours.

Hating sin with a perfect hatred, He yet gathered to His soul the sins of the whole world, as He trod the path to Calvary, suffering the penalty of the transgressor. Guiltless, He bore the punishment of the guilty; innocent, yet offering Himself to bear the penalty of the transgression of the law of God. The punishment of the sins of every soul was borne by the Son of the infinite God. The guilt of every sin pressed its weight upon the divine soul of the world’s Redeemer. He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. In assuming the nature of man, He placed Himself where He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, that by His stripes we might be healed. {TMK 66.2}

When you are in a depraved sense in the time of judgement in a time of extreme sinfulness in yourself, he did exactly that so you could be healed by his stripes.

In His humanity Christ was tried with as much greater temptation, with as much more persevering energy than man is tried by the evil one, as His nature was greater than man’s. This is a deep mysterious truth, that Christ is bound to humanity by the most sensitive sympathies. The evil works, the evil thoughts, the evil words of every son and daughter of Adam press upon His divine soul. The sins of men called for retribution upon Himself, for He had become man’s substitute, and took upon Him the sins of the world. He bore the sins of every sinner, for all transgressions were imputed unto Him. . . . “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?” (Hebrews 2:3). {TMK 66.3}

How can we survive through the experiences of the judgement that reveals to us the depravity of our condition if we reject the reality of Jesus as we have contemplated? I repeat that this is the revival of the 1888 message. This was the core of what they represented. People say I keep highlight this subject all the time, it is a mystery, you shouldn’t do that. You and I together with Jesus is the essential knowledge to survive through the time of Jacobs’s trouble. What does he invite me to do after we see what he has done after he suffered in his flesh? What has he invited us to do? He who is this wonderful saviour and God, what we are studying was all in the mind of God before any creation. The I Am knew it then. Here is his invitation to the people who are sleeping. This is from the woman in Song of Solomon. She is in her sleepy condition. I sleep and I can hear him knocking and his finger poking through the hole and he is trying to open the latch. Laodicea, the woman, that can’t get up.

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

What’s he pointing to? He is pointing to his experience in the pit. He says I supped with you, will you sup with me? He ate and drank of the bitter cup of the discovery of sinfulness in the internal soul and as he experienced that he says will you let me in when you go through your bitter experience? I want to sup with you. How feeble we have picked this up. We can sit at the table together, no the people don’t want him. We will not have this man rule over us. We don’t that message that he became sin for us. We want to feel our Pharisaic pride left alone. But to experience that my sin was what he suffered under is an anathema but that is what will be the destruction when the rock strikes. We will see that vividly. When we have fallen and your sins are revealed to us by the fall, behold Jesus. He is right there with you, listen to him speaking. He is the great I am to whom the past, present and future is all present tense. What he experienced in gethsemane that experience is still present with him now. Remember the tears, they were flowing like a bucket. He was suffering and tearing and weeping.

Through all our trials we have a never-failing Helper. He does not leave us alone to struggle with temptation, to battle with evil, and be finally crushed with burdens and sorrow. Though now He is hidden from mortal sight, the ear of faith can hear His voice saying, Fear not; I am with you. {DA 483.1}

Do you have the ear of faith that when you feel you are so depraved and hopeless that it’s burning through your bones? Do you have the faith that what he is saying is true?

“I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore.” Revelation 1:18. I have endured your sorrows, experienced your struggles, encountered your temptations. I know your tears; I also have wept. The griefs that lie too deep to be breathed into any human ear, I know. Think not that you are desolate and forsaken. {DA 483.1}

When you are pounded with the awareness of your sin you feel desolate and forsaken. Jacob you are not desolate and forsaken, battle on.

Though your pain touch no responsive chord in any heart on earth, look unto Me, and live. ” {DA 483.1}

What is he saying? You think you are the only one going through it, look unto me. This is necessary to survive. When you fall and you fall again and you are in a depraved condition under the experiences of the judgement look to Micah 7. This is the continual requirement in the day of the judgement as the sins that I don’t know will be brought to my attention systematically to cleanse me form every defilement.

Micah 7:8 Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD [shall be] a light unto me.

7:9 I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, [and] I shall behold his righteousness.

These are the living truths of 1888 which were presented to revive a church that had become the sleepy woman behind the door. He has partaken with you and now partake of with him to raise you as he was raised by faith. How many times do we fall? If you are a wise person in this time of judgement and you are going through an experience in this time, Psalm 37 is relevant to the people just now.

Psalm 37:23 The steps of a [good] man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

37:24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth [him with] his hand.

How many times will you fall? This good man is called a just man. Why is he just? Because God has justified him.

Proverbs 24:16 For a just [man] falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.

This is the everlasting covenant, the sure mercies of David. Did you feel a revival inside of you? A revival of hope? That is what God brought. He brought this to the church that was Laodicean in experience. Being revived by that reality, the revival will behind with the reformation because what will happen? The books Steps to Christ was written after 1888 because of the message and its poor reception. Look at what was written in reference to the revival and reformation.

Since we are sinful, unholy, we cannot perfectly obey the holy law. We have no righteousness of our own with which to meet the claims of the law of God. But Christ has made a way of escape for us. He lived on earth amid trials and temptations such as we have to meet. He lived a sinless life. He died for us, and now He offers to take our sins and give us His righteousness. If you give yourself to Him, and accept Him as your Saviour, then, sinful as your life may have been, for His sake you are accounted righteous. Christ’s character stands in place of your character, and you are accepted before God just as if you had not sinned. {SC 62.2}

Do you believe that? Blend it with the next statement. What you have gained by the revival you must maintain.

More than this, Christ changes the heart. He abides in your heart by faith. You are to maintain this connection with Christ by faith and the continual surrender of your will to Him; and so long as you do this, He will work in you to will and to do according to His good pleasure. So you may say, “The life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20. So Jesus said to His disciples, “It is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.” Matthew 10:20. Then with Christ working in you, you will manifest the same spirit and do the same good works –works of righteousness, obedience. {SC 62.3}

From this revival of gaining the answer, it is your responsibility to retain the deep moving’s of the Holy Spirit as he reveals Jesus to us as he did in 1888. As you keep on doing that, you will go forward and launch into the experiences of the future.

The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth. For it is the work of every one to whom the message of warning has come, to lift up Jesus, to present Him to the world as revealed in types, as shadowed in symbols, as manifested in the revelations of the prophets, as unveiled in the lessons given to His disciples and in the wonderful miracles wrought for the sons of men. Search the Scriptures; for they are they that testify of Him. {1SM 362.4}

If you would stand through the time of trouble, you must know Christ, and appropriate the gift of His righteousness, which He imputes to the repentant sinner.–The Review and Herald, Nov. 22, 1892. {1SM 363.1}

Why was 1888 given? Why have I preached this to you today? The text is upon us as it was on them. When the 1888 message was given, right there in 1888 the enemy was formulating the test, the Sunday law in 1888. The spirit of God knew they needed the revival just then as they were going to be tested on the Sabbath and so we are. Sunday laws were formed over the period of 1883 onwards through to 1888 very carefully and subtly and by the time they got to 1892/3 there were Sunday laws and the people were to be tested. See how imminent the time of final test is. It is more present than we think. May God help us.

Amen.
