Ethylbenzene

IPS News

By Dahr Jamail

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana, Jan 14, 2011 (IPS) – In an emotionally charged meeting this week sponsored by the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, fishermen, Gulf residents and community leaders vented their increasingly grave concerns about the widespread health issues brought on by the three-month-long disaster.

“Today I’m talking to you about my life,” Cherri Foytlin told the two commissioners present at the Jan. 12 meeting. “My ethylbenzene levels are 2.5 times the 95th percentile, and there’s a very good chance now that I won’t get to see my grandbabies…What I’m asking you to do now, if possible, is to amend [your report]. Because we have got to get some health care.”

Ethylbenzene is a form of benzene present in the body when it begins to break down. It is also present in BP’s crude oil.

“I have seen small children with lesions all over their bodies,” Foytlin, co-founder of Gulf Change, a community organisation based in Grand Isle, Louisiana, continued.

“We are very, very ill. And dead is dead. So it really doesn’t matter if the media comes back… or the president hears us, or… if the oil workers and the fishermen and the crabbers get to feed their babies and maybe have a good Christmas next year… Dead is dead…I know your job is probably already done, but I’d like to hire you if you don’t mind. And God knows I can’t pay you. But I need your heart. And I need your voice.”

Airborne Prions Make for 100 Percent Lethal Whiff

Airborne Prions Make for 100 Percent Lethal Whiff

When sprayed into the air, prions that cause mad cow and other neurodegenerative diseases may be in one of their most lethal forms.

A new study has revealed one short exposure to sprayed prions can be 100 percent lethal in mice. While the discovery doesn’t present any foreseeable public health threat, it comes as a surprise to scientists who study prion-based diseases and calls existing safety rules for laboratories and slaughterhouses into question.

“Common knowledge is that prions aren’t airborne, and can’t cause infection that way,” said neuropathologist Adriano Aguzzi of University Hospital Zurich, co-author of a study appearing today in PLoS Pathogens. “We were totally surprised and also a bit frightened at how efficient [airborne infections] were.”

Most infectious diseases are spread by bacteria or viruses, which use genes to copy themselves. But prions are a third form of disease discovered in 1982, and they’re made only of misfolded proteins. The molecules resemble regular proteins found in the brain cells and other nervous tissues, but their abnormal shape converts healthy proteins into long fibrils that ultimately kill cells.

Like a chain reaction, fibrils create more prions until the host dies from destroyed brain and nervous tissue. All prion infections are 100 percent fatal, and symptoms appear suddenly months or years after infection.

“Prions are like an enemy within, the alien in some B-movie that transforms people to an evil version,” said prion biologist Edward Hoover of Colorado State University, who was not involved in the study. “The immune system doesn’t see them coming.”

Five known human prion diseases exist, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, as well as six non-human diseases, including scrapie, chronic wasting disease and mad cow disease (which sometimes jumps to humans through contaminated meat).

Although prions infect only one to two people per million in the United States each year, as much as 15 percent of deer in some Colorado populations carry chronic wasting disease. Such diseases spread via infected body fluids and tissue, yet only inconclusive evidence on airborne transmission existed until now.

To see if airborne prions could cause infection in mammals, Aguzzi and his team exposed several small groups of mice to different concentrations and exposure times of aerosolized prions that cause scrapie.

All mice except one group, which was exposed to a very light concentration of prions, got infected and died about 150 to 200 days after exposure. When it came to a lethal dose, the researchers also found that prion concentration didn’t matter as much as exposure time. A group of four mice exposed for one minute to a light dose of prion-infected fluid, for example, died from scrapie in about 200 days.

Other forms of prion exposure typically require high concentrations of them to do anything, so Aguzzi said the lethality wasn’t what he expected. Roughly 100,000 times more prions, for example, are required to cause an infection through the mouth compared to brain-to-brain contamination.

“That’s part of the reason why we don’t see more cases of prion diseases,” Aguzzi said.

Because the incidence of prion disease is so low among humans — and continues to remain low — it’s unlikely airborne forms are a significant threat to most people.

“I think this study is interesting and comprehensive, but my big question is this: Where do prions exist in aerosolized form?” said prion biologist Anthony Kincaid of Creighton University, who also was not involved in the research. “People who remove brains or spinal chords often use bone saws, so those might make infected tissue airborne. Otherwise I’m not sure.”

Slaughterhouse environments may also be a concern, Kincaid added, but the jury is out until further research is done. Until then, he agreed with Aguzzi and Hoover that laboratory protocols are worth revising.

“My real hope in studying prions is apply what I learn to much more common but similar diseases, such as Alzheimer’s,” Aguzzi said. “Knowing why aggregated proteins damage neurons will allow us to understand how they affect brain function.”

Earth's Magnetic Pole Shift Unleashing Poisonous Space Clouds Linked To Mysterious Bird Deaths?

Ipse Spiritus testimonium reddit spiritui nostro, quod sumus filii Dei. (Romans 8:16)

Natural News reports deadly space clouds are reaching into the lower atmosphere and killing birds.

As poisoning clouds of hydrogen cyanide reach into our lower atmosphere, they could also reach ground level killing humans.

Wikipedia explains that hydrogen cyanide is extremely deadly.

A hydrogen cyanide concentration of 300 mg/m3 in air will kill a human within about 10 minutes.

It is estimated that hydrogen cyanide at a concentration of 3500 ppm (about 3200 mg/m3) will kill a human in about 1 minute.

The toxicity is caused by the cyanide ion, which halts cellular respiration by inhibiting an enzyme in mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase.

Magnetic field disruptions are getting more serious.

But I think we also could be attacked by extraterrestrials.

"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels", see Revelation 12:7.

In Greenland, the sun has risen after the polar night two days early.

It is all anything but normal.

But what is normal anyway?

Earlier civilizations knew about nuclear fusion and even left a sculpture depicting an angel on the moon 200.000 years ago.

TARKHANI, Pakistan, January 14 (CDN) —
A Muslim who allegedly confessed to sexually assaulting five Christian girls raped a 10-year-old Catholic girl in Punjab Province last month, according to her family.

Tarkhani police have charged 25-year-old Muhammad Aftab, also known as Chandu, with raping a minor (section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code) in a sugar cane field in Village 226-GB, according to First Information Report (FIR) No. 429 at the Tarkhani Police Station. Aftab has been arrested and remanded to Central Jail Faisalabad.

Aftab allegedly raped the girl on Dec. 10, Abid Masih, a 31-year-old relative of the girl, told Compass in village 226-GB, Tarkhani near Gojra.

“Though we had informed the Tarkhani police station, for a day we kept quiet as the rapist had gone underground, and we waited for him to come out,” Masih told Compass at his home. “When the rapist saw that no one has taken action against him, he came out, and our girl immediately identified him.”

Masih said the girl, whose name is withheld, went to a nearby field with 7-year-old Sahil Abid to load sugar cane for transport to a processing plant. The girl’s father, 55-year-old electrician Yousaf Masih, said that Aftab seized her and rushed into the sugar cane fields.

“Sahil Abid started screaming for help, but no one was there to help him,” Abid Masih said. “Therefore he came running to us and told us that a man kidnapped her and has taken her to the sugar cane fields.”

Sahil took him and Yousaf Masih to the site, Abid Masih said.

“As we reached there, that man masked his face and disappeared into the dense sugar cane fields,” he said.

Abid Masih took her to the Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital, Samundri, he said.

Family members said that doctors at Samundri THQ Hospital confirmed that the girl was raped, and the FIR also notes that the medical report by doctors at the hospital states that she was raped.

“SHO [the Station House Officer] pleas to the honorable Court of Law to penalize the rapist/pedophile, who has confessed during interrogation to raping at least five other little Christian girls before this sad incident,” the FIR states. “The culprit is sent to Central jail Faisalabad under judicial remand on the orders of the court and deserves exemplary punishment.”

Abid Masih and Yousaf Masih said that Sahil also was unable to see the rapist’s face, but that the girl was able to recognize him because she had been assaulted by him in the fields. They said she identified Aftab, the son of a local land owner.

“It’s not the first time he has raped a minor girl,” Abid Masih said. “He has raped at least five little Christian girls before this, but those families under pressure kept their mouths shut, and Christians also tried to force us to keep quiet and refrain from filing a police case, as they were fearful that it might worsen the relations between Christian and Muslim villagers.”

Area sources said local Christians were angry with the family of Yousaf Masih for taking legal action against the rapist, believing that it would damage relations between Muslims and Christians.

Bad prion breath: Mad cow disease agent can infect via the air

Bad prion breath: Mad cow disease agent can infect via the air

As if it weren't bad enough that deadly prions can survive boiling and radiation, now comes word that aerosolized forms of the pathogen can enter the nose and find their way to the brain, with fatal consequences.

Prions, you may recall, were the reason you avoided beef in Europe in the 1990s. They triggered the infamous mad cow disease epidemic in the U.K., which spread to the rest of Europe and other parts of the world.

Prions are proteins that all animals produce, but sometimes, toxic mutant versions are made. These malformed versions can cause normal prions to become pathogenic, setting off a chain-reaction conversion to the deadly kind. The bad prions destroy neural tissue, sometimes leaving the brain full of holes like a sponge (hence the formal name, "spongiform encephalopathies," for these diseases).

Transmission of the disease from one host to another generally came about through ingestion. Cows passed on the disease because of forced cannibalism: in the U.K. in particular, farmers turned the parts of cows not fit for human consumption into feed for other cows. Humans contracted the disease probably by eating ground beef and sausage, which are more likely to contain the nervous system tissue where prions mostly lurk. (I wrote a book about prions in 2003 titled "The Pathological Protein," although I wish I had thought to title it "Cannibalism's Revenge.")

Now, it seems as if you can get a prion disease through inhalation, at least if you're a mouse. In Adrian Aguzzi's lab at the University Hospital Zurich, mice could get sick after just one minute of exposure to spray-bottle prions. How long it took for the mice to sicken depended on how much they inhaled. The journal PLoS Pathogens published the work on January 13.

Besides adding a new dimension to prion personality, the results really apply to those who work with prions in the lab. As Aguzzi and his team write, "This previously unappreciated risk for airborne prion transmission may warrant re-thinking on prion biosafety guidelines in research and diagnostic laboratories." So, hold your breath!

In the case of your cheeseburger, changes in farming practices starting in the 1990s have brought mad cow disease under control. According to statistics from the World Organization for Animal Health, the U.K. saw seven mad cows in 2010--a far cry from its peak year of 1992, when it found 37,000 cases and slaughtered hundreds of thousands as a preemptive measure. The rest of the world reported fewer than a dozen last year. (The U.S. reported its only two cases in 2004 and 2005.)

And don't worry if you were avoiding eating beef at the height of the mad cow epidemic but enjoyed a few whiffs of the char-broiled aroma. You did not inhale prions. If you did, you wouldn't be around to read this post.

Caritas in Veritate: Redistribution of Wealth: Vatican Reshapes Socialist Vocabulary for American Audience

Vatican Reshapes Socialist Vocabulary for American Audience

The Vatican is committed to promoting Catholic socialism all over the world.  Despite the affirmations of Cardinal Turkson, the Catholic socialism is indeed a form of socialism not very different from other forms.  The only difference is that the Roman Catholic Church holds the nucleus of power as opposed to some politburo or party apparatus.
I encourage my readers to look closely at Benedict XVI's most recent encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, and discern exactly what kind of political and economic world system he preaches.
This article comes from the Catholic News Agency.
Vatican official: Church’s justice teachings need new 'vocabulary' for some US audiences

Vatican City, Jan 13, 2011 / 05:33 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- When he travels to the United States next month, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson is aware that he may have to make some adjustments in the way he talks about the Church’s social teaching.

As president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, the Ghanaian cardinal, 62, is charged with making the Church’s social teaching more widely known and practiced around the world.

He will be in Washington to deliver the plenary address of the 2011 Catholic Social Ministry Gathering, Feb. 13-16. The gathering, on the theme of “Protecting Human Life and Dignity: Promoting a Just Economy,” is sponsored by 19 Catholic organizations, including the U.S. Catholic bishops.

In a recent interview with CNA, Cardinal Turkson said he has learned from past experience that the Church’s justice and peace terminology often needs clarification for an American Catholic audience. Key terms used by the Vatican — such as “social justice” and “gift” — are not always understood the way the Vatican intends, he said.

"We found out that some of the vocabulary which is just taken for granted and used freely may not always have the same sense or may have had some nuances which sometimes are missed because of the way the terms are used in the American political context,” Cardinal Turkson said in a Jan. 12 interview at the council’s offices in Rome.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Cardinal Turkson to his post in Oct. 2009, just months after the Pope released his blueprint for the Church’s social teaching, “Caritas in Veritate” (Charity in Truth). The council has since made promotion of the Pope’s vision a top priority.

The encyclical outlines Pope Benedict’s plan for "integral human development" in economics, society and politics through the principles of charity and truth.

Cardinal Turkson said the Vatican is pleased by response to the document. But he said reaction from some sections of the audience in the United States was unexpected.

The council has been surprised to find that common terms were misunderstood or misinterpreted. He emphasized that the misunderstanding was not a general or widespread problem among American Catholics. But, he said, "in certain circles ... there is a difficulty."

For instance, the Pope's teaching on themes of "social justice" have been mistakenly connected to "socialism" and "communism." As a result, he indicated, the Pope is mistakenly seen as promoting socialist or big-government solutions to social problems.

The council has also learned that words like "social" and "solidarity" may have been dismissed by American readers for their perceived connection with communist regimes such as the Soviet Union, he said.

Cardinal Turkson explained that in the Church’s thinking, social justice involves citizens’ obligations and responsibilities to ensure fairness and opportunity in their communities and societies.

While this may include the adoption of specific government policies and programs, the emphasis in Catholic social teaching is on the obligations that flow from citizens' relationships in societies.

"Respecting, understanding and fulfilling those demands constitute our justice," he said. "It would be useful if we just observed our sense of justice as our ability to fulfill the demands of the relationships in which we stand."

This is in contrast to socialism, he explained, which is an ideology in which private property and private interests are totally placed in the service of government policies.

What the Pope proposes in “Caritas in Veritate,” said Cardinal Turkson, is "achieving the common good without sacrificing personal, private interests, aspirations and desires."

Cardinal Turkson said the Council was also surprised that the Pope’s concept of the “gift,” was perceived in some circles as encouraging government welfare handouts.

In "Caritas in Veritate," Pope Benedict described the concept of “gift” as a way to understand God’s love for men and women in his gift of life and his gift of Jesus.

"Truth is the light that gives meaning and value to charity," the Pope wrote. "That light is both the light of reason and the light of faith, through which the intellect attains to the natural and supernatural truth of charity: it grasps its meaning as gift, acceptance, and communion."

Gift, Cardinal Turkson explained, is "a very basic, deep theological expression of God's relation or the motivation for whatever God does in the world, and it's not quite the same as a handout."

"If we ever need to talk about this in a society where the sense of gift is that of a handout ... it doesn't quite express the sense of gift in this regard," he added.

While it is too late to add any explanations to the encyclical, the Council might tailor its language differently in future documents.

"We just realized that probably in the future, when ... this dicastery takes up the task of diffusing, presenting and talking about this it might be necessary to provide a footnote in which some of these expressions can be given an awareness of the different senses of expressions in different cultures and settings,” he said. We thought something like that would be useful and helpful to the readers."

Cardinal Turkson urged American Catholics and government and economic leaders to give a conscientious reading of "Caritas in Veritate."

The encyclical, he said, invites us "to go back or to remind about the centrality of the human person, his well being, his common good within everything that we do.”

Another important message, Cardinal Turkson said, is that “we must not sacrifice the good of the human person for anything that we aspire after or want to do with technology, business, economics or whatever."

The key to an authentically human vision of development is to consider the full ethical character of the individual in all decisions, he said.

"In details," he concluded, "it may be for food security and shelter for all persons, but at the end of the day we are looking at whether things that we are doing in the world as government, as a Church and all of that help advance the good of the individual person."

Italian prime minister also suspected of abusing position by putting pressure on police

Silvio Berlusconi has been formally placed under investigation on suspicion of paying for sex with a 17-year old girl, according to a statement issued today by prosecutors in Milan.

He was further accused of abusing his position as Italy's prime minister by bringing pressure to bear on the police to cover up his alleged relationship with the girl, who was working as a prostitute. The two alleged offences carry sentences totalling 15 years in jail.

The statement said Berlusconi, who has not been charged, had been invited to present himself for questioning. The prosecutors said he had been formally made a suspect on 21 December, but the news only broke today on the website of the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

Berlusconi's legal team said today the investigation was "absurd and groundless" and the allegations raised had already been denied by the main figures in the case. They called the inquiry a "very serious interference in the private life" of the prime minister.

The reported investigation concerns Karima el-Mahroug, otherwise known as Ruby Rubacuori or Ruby Heartstealer, a then 17-year-old Moroccan girl who told investigators last year that she had attended parties at Berlusconi's villa near Milan. One of these, she was reported to have said, ended in an erotic game known to participants as "bunga bunga".

The case came to light after Mahroug, first named in some reports as Karima Keyek, was arrested last May on suspicion of theft. She had run away from a care home, but instead of being returned to care she was handed over to a confidante of the prime minister, Nicole Minetti.

A half-British former showgirl, Minetti became Berlusconi's dental hygienist and, soon afterwards, a regional parliamentarian for his Freedom People movement. Corriere said police raided her office in Milan this morning.

Minetti is already under investigation for aiding and abetting prostitution, along with two other close associates of the prime minister, a newscaster on one of his three television channels and a showbusiness talent scout. Corriere reported that the police attempted to search the office of another Berlusconi confidante, but withdrew after it was claimed that the premises were covered by parliamentary immunity.

The age of sexual consent under Italian law is 14, but paying for sex with a prostitute under 18 is an offence that carries a sentence of up to three years. Politicians and others found guilt of abusing their position risk jail sentences of up to 12 years.

Berlusconi, who spent part of this morning meeting with his lawyers, gave no immediate reaction, but his education minister, Mariastella Gelmini, said the prime minister was the "object of persecution by certain prosecution services".

Raw Story

Jan 14, 2011

A woman who had her breasts exposed during an airport search by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was to receive a “nominal” payment as a part of a settlement agreement, according to documents released this week.

The 24-year-old woman was selected for “extended search procedures” prior to boarding a plane to Amarillo, Texas in 2008.

A lawsuit claimed that the TSA agent pulled her blouse completely down while frisking her.

Raw Story decided against republishing the woman’s name and photograph due to the nature of her ordeal.

“As would be expected, plaintiff was extremely embarrassed and humiliated,” the lawsuit alleged.

Last time this little girl got her eyebrows waxed, "the wax was way too hot and it actually ripped off her skin," according to her mother.

This time around, the child screams, cries, and hyperventilates as hair is torn from her face with a scalding substance at a linoleum-tiled salon. Her reward: A lollipop. "Normally I woulda just held her down and ripped it off," her mother drawls. [Buzzfeed, Styleite]

Court Rules Government Can Keep Naked Body Scanner Images Secret 161110naked

A federal judge has ruled that the Department of Homeland Security can keep images produced by x-ray body scanners out of the public domain, in a blow to privacy group The Electronic Privacy Information Center’ s (EPIC) efforts to release more than 2000 of the images that show intimate details of airport travelers’ bodies.

Judge Ricardo Urbina ruled that the DHS does not have to comply with the Freedom of Information Act request to disclose the naked images of those who were screened at airport checkpoints, nor does the government have to release any other related materials.

The judge granted the government’s motion to conclude the lawsuit, issuing a 15-page explanation noting that the images are used to train employees and any public disclosure of such material could reveal vulnerabilities in the technology, thus threatening the agency’s security.

Such disclosures could “provide terrorists and others with increased abilities to circumvent detection by TSA and carrying threatening contraband onboard…” Urbina wrote.

The images EPIC requested “are so closely related to TSA’s rule or practice that their disclosure could reveal the rule or practice itself,” the judge added.

Citing substantial public interest in the release of the images, EPIC Lawyers John Verdi and Marc Rotenberg noted that the government has already released some scanner images into the public domain, therefore there is no justification for keeping the rest under wraps.

“The body scanner program is presently the subject of substantial debate in Congress, between international delegations, and in the media,” the attorneys wrote in papers submitted last year.

Though the ruling is technically a defeat for EPIC, the justification that the images are used for training purposes proves that the machines can indeed store and transmit images, a fact that was vehemently denied by the government during the roll out of the technology into airports across the country.

EPIC has therefore essentially achieved it’s aim of exposing how the government misled the public and then actively lied to the media on several occasions to quell a backlash against the invasive technology.

As part of the litigation, EPIC also obtained several documents related to the body scanners, which have since been released to the public. They include details relating to Procurement Specifications, Operational Requirements, traveler complaints, and vendor contracts with L3 and Rapiscan.

Though they are heavily redacted, these documents also prove that the devices can store, record, and transmit images.

“The documents show that the TSA was not honest with the public about the body scanner program,” said EPIC Counsel Ginger McCall.

In granting the motion to conclude, the court relied on a legal theory, “Exemption High (b)(2)” that is currently under review by the Supreme Court in Milner v. Dept. of Navy.

EPIC has said that it may appeal the district court’s decision.

“These images are central to the dispute about the invasiveness of the airport body scanners. That is the reason they should be disclosed to the public,” said EPIC President Marc Rotenberg.

EPIC has another pending lawsuit with the federal appeals court in Washington to completely suspend the body scanner program, describing it as invasive, unlawful and ineffective.

The group has brought claims under the Administrative Procedure Act (which requires a public review of such plans before the government can implement them), the Privacy Act, the Video Voyeurism Prevention Act, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and the Fourth Amendment.

“The TSA has acted outside of its regulatory authority and with profound disregard for the statutory and constitutional rights of air travelers,” EPIC’s lawyers stated. “The agency’s rule should be set aside and further deployment of the body scanners should be suspended.”

In an answer brief, the government has claimed that the scanners are fully compliant with Constitutional requirements and that all other claims that the body imaging program is unlawful are “meritless”, “baseless” and “unfounded”.

Oral testimony in the case begins on March 10.

EPIC’s efforts have already helped spur a national grassroots movement of citizens, advocates, and lawmakers to protest, create petitions and letters and even introduce legislation to outlaw the body scanners.

Last week the group hosted a one-day public conference entitled “The Stripping of Freedom”. The forum, “devoted to an assessment of the TSA airport security procedures and recommendations for reform,” featured many notable speakers, drew a broad crowd and was covered by C-Span.

The following are videos from the conference. The first is speaker Jim Babb of activist website We Won’t Fly.com, the second is a question and answer session.
