Caritas in Veritate: Vatican official: Church’s justice teachings need new 'vocabulary' for some US audiences

Vatican official: Church’s justice teachings need new 'vocabulary' for some US audiences
By Alan Holdren, Rome Correspondent

Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson

Vatican City, Jan 13, 2011 / 05:33 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- When he travels to the United States next month, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson is aware that he may have to make some adjustments in the way he talks about the Church’s social teaching.

As president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, the Ghanaian cardinal, 62, is charged with making the Church’s social teaching more widely known and practiced around the world.

He will be in Washington to deliver the plenary address of the 2011 Catholic Social Ministry Gathering, Feb. 13-16. The gathering, on the theme of “Protecting Human Life and Dignity: Promoting a Just Economy,” is sponsored by 19 Catholic organizations, including the U.S. Catholic bishops.

In a recent interview with CNA, Cardinal Turkson said he has learned from past experience that the Church’s justice and peace terminology often needs clarification for an American Catholic audience. Key terms used by the Vatican — such as “social justice” and “gift” — are not always understood the way the Vatican intends, he said.

"We found out that some of the vocabulary which is just taken for granted and used freely may not always have the same sense or may have had some nuances which sometimes are missed because of the way the terms are used in the American political context,” Cardinal Turkson said in a Jan. 12 interview at the council’s offices in Rome.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Cardinal Turkson to his post in Oct. 2009, just months after the Pope released his blueprint for the Church’s social teaching, “Caritas in Veritate” (Charity in Truth). The council has since made promotion of the Pope’s vision a top priority.

The encyclical outlines Pope Benedict’s plan for "integral human development" in economics, society and politics through the principles of charity and truth.

Cardinal Turkson said the Vatican is pleased by response to the document. But he said reaction from some sections of the audience in the United States was unexpected.

The council has been surprised to find that common terms were misunderstood or misinterpreted. He emphasized that the misunderstanding was not a general or widespread problem among American Catholics. But, he said, "in certain circles ... there is a difficulty."

For instance, the Pope's teaching on themes of "social justice" have been mistakenly connected to "socialism" and "communism." As a result, he indicated, the Pope is mistakenly seen as promoting socialist or big-government solutions to social problems.

The council has also learned that words like "social" and "solidarity" may have been dismissed by American readers for their perceived connection with communist regimes such as the Soviet Union, he said.

Cardinal Turkson explained that in the Church’s thinking, social justice involves citizens’ obligations and responsibilities to ensure fairness and opportunity in their communities and societies.

While this may include the adoption of specific government policies and programs, the emphasis in Catholic social teaching is on the obligations that flow from citizens' relationships in societies.

"Respecting, understanding and fulfilling those demands constitute our justice," he said. "It would be useful if we just observed our sense of justice as our ability to fulfill the demands of the relationships in which we stand."

This is in contrast to socialism, he explained, which is an ideology in which private property and private interests are totally placed in the service of government policies.

What the Pope proposes in “Caritas in Veritate,” said Cardinal Turkson, is "achieving the common good without sacrificing personal, private interests, aspirations and desires."

Cardinal Turkson said the Council was also surprised that the Pope’s concept of the “gift,” was perceived in some circles as encouraging government welfare handouts.

In "Caritas in Veritate," Pope Benedict described the concept of “gift” as a way to understand God’s love for men and women in his gift of life and his gift of Jesus.

"Truth is the light that gives meaning and value to charity," the Pope wrote. "That light is both the light of reason and the light of faith, through which the intellect attains to the natural and supernatural truth of charity: it grasps its meaning as gift, acceptance, and communion."

Gift, Cardinal Turkson explained, is "a very basic, deep theological expression of God's relation or the motivation for whatever God does in the world, and it's not quite the same as a handout."

"If we ever need to talk about this in a society where the sense of gift is that of a handout ... it doesn't quite express the sense of gift in this regard," he added.

While it is too late to add any explanations to the encyclical, the Council might tailor its language differently in future documents.

"We just realized that probably in the future, when ... this dicastery takes up the task of diffusing, presenting and talking about this it might be necessary to provide a footnote in which some of these expressions can be given an awareness of the different senses of expressions in different cultures and settings,” he said. We thought something like that would be useful and helpful to the readers."

Cardinal Turkson urged American Catholics and government and economic leaders to give a conscientious reading of "Caritas in Veritate."

The encyclical, he said, invites us "to go back or to remind about the centrality of the human person, his well being, his common good within everything that we do.”

Another important message, Cardinal Turkson said, is that “we must not sacrifice the good of the human person for anything that we aspire after or want to do with technology, business, economics or whatever."

The key to an authentically human vision of development is to consider the full ethical character of the individual in all decisions, he said.

"In details," he concluded, "it may be for food security and shelter for all persons, but at the end of the day we are looking at whether things that we are doing in the world as government, as a Church and all of that help advance the good of the individual person."

Abuse inquiry panel moving to Armagh

The Apostolic Visitation set up by the Pope last year will cross the border into Northern Ireland on Thursday.

Pope Benedict announced the Visitation in March last year in a pastoral letter to Catholics in Ireland.

It followed the publication of reports into abuse in Catholic institutions and in the Dublin archdiocese.

The event at the City Hotel in Armagh on Thursday night will be the first public meeting held in Northern Ireland by the inquiry panel.

It is being led by Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, the retired archbishop of Westminster,

Another meeting is scheduled for the Glenavon House Hotel in Cookstown on Friday night.

The Pope's letter expressed sorrow and regret at the abuse perpetrated by priests on the island.

He said he would send teams of inspectors to some Irish dioceses, seminaries and Irish religious orders to investigate how far they had strayed from the new rules laid down by the Vatican to try to curb clerical abuse.

Five senior prelates are taking part in the inquiry panel.

As well as Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, the others are Cardinal O'Malley, Boston, Archbishop Timothy Dolan, New York, Archbishop Thomas Collins, Toronto, and Archbishop Terence Prendergast SJ, Ottawa.

Cardinal Murphy O'Connor is conducting the visitation of the Armagh archdiocese.

Among those accompanying him are Dr Sheila Hollins, professor of the UK Board of Psychiatry.

Meanwhile, a US lawyer who specialises in clerical abuse cases has said he is to sue the Catholic diocese of Clogher, which takes in parts of Fermanagh, Tyrone, Monaghan and Donegal.

Jeff Anderson has co-founded a London-based law firm - Jeff Anderson - Ann Olivarius Law - to bring sex abuse lawsuits against churches in Britain and Ireland.

Mr Anderson told the Irish Times newspaper the firm's first joint case would be taken in Minnesota against a retired priest from the Clogher diocese who was moved to the US in the 1980s.

US sex abuse attorney extends practice against Catholic Church overseas

US sex abuse attorney extends practice against Catholic Church overseas

Attorney Jeff Anderson appears at one of his high-powered news conferences

St. Paul, Minn., Jan 12, 2011 / 02:17 am (CNA).- Attorney Jeff Anderson, who claims to have won more than $60 million from the U.S. Catholic Church in clerical sex-abuse lawsuits, has extended his practice to the U.K.

Anderson – a lawyer based in St. Paul Minnesota – has filed more than 1,000 sex-abuse cases against the Catholic Church in the U.S. and is starting a new firm in London in the hopes of continuing lawsuits aimed at the Church. The new practice will involve London-based solicitor Ann Olivarius.

The lawyer told the U.K newspaper The Guardian on Jan. 10 that he was "deeply concerned" and had "every reason to know" that the Church was "recycling offenders" – moving them from parish to parish –  and failing to turn in abusive priests to authorities.

Anderson, given his track record, may also try to implicate the Vatican in his U.K. lawsuits.

In recent months, Anderson's most high-profile cases have included suits against the Vatican filed in Oregon, Wisconsin and Kentucky, which have attempted to implicate the Holy See in obstructing justice for clerical perpetrators.

A recent setback for Anderson, however, involved plaintiffs in the Kentucky case – O'Bryan vs. the Holy See – who chose to withdraw their lawsuit in August. Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi reacted to the decision by saying the accusations against the Holy See were ultimately proven “unfounded.”

Earlier court rulings recognizing the sovereign immunity of the Holy See influenced the outcome, as well as the fact that most victims had already sought compensation from their dioceses.

U.S. Vatican lawyer Jeffrey Lena, who has been critical of Anderson's efforts, said at the time that the dropping of the Kentucky case shows there has never been a Vatican policy requiring concealment of child sexual abuse.

Lena added that although the case against the Holy See always lacked merit, it does not mean that the plaintiffs themselves did not suffer as a result of sexual abuse. The attempted lawsuit, he said, only served to distract from the important goal of protecting children from harm.

On the Milwaukee case, which is still currently underway, Lena described the lawsuit as "completely without merit," because it "rehashes old theories already rejected by U.S. courts."

As for the involvement of the Holy See in the case, the Vatican's lawyer told CNA in April 2010 that it had "no role whatsoever in causing plaintiff's injuries," having not known about the cases "until decades after the abuse occurred."

Former Chaminade priest defrocked — SNAP wants apology

Greg Branson

Barbara Dorris and David Clohessy outside Marianist headquarters

ST. LOUIS–(KMOX)–A Marianist priest who once taught at Chaminade – Father William Christensen —  is accused of molesting boys connected to a charity where he worked in Bangladesh.

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests today picketed outside the Central West End headquarters of the Marianists.   SNAP is upset that a Vatican decision to defrock Christensen was not announced locally.

“Not once have Catholic officials anywhere in this country told people that he’s accused of molesting thirty kids in Bangladesh, and that he’s been formally defrocked by the Vatican,” Clohessy said.

SNAP wants local Catholic officials to apologize for their silence on the scandal.

“And they need to aggressively reach out to former students at McBride and Chaminade, any place where Father Christensen was, and get those people to come forward, if they were hurt and get help,” Clohessy said.

The Marianist released a statement confirming Christensen was defrocked by the Vatican in October of 2010, following “several accusations of sexual abuse” from Bangladesh.

Responding to allegations that it failed to alert the public,  the Marianist statement says:

“When the accusations were deemed credible, the Papal Nuncio in Bangladesh informed all the dioceses in Bangladesh of this information.   Because Christensen’s appeal of the laicization is under appeal by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and he is living in Bangladesh, there is no final resolution to be reported.”

The statement goes on to say that “until the appeal is settled, he remains a priest and a member of the Society of Mary.”

In 2002, a former Chaminade student, Michael Powel, sued Christensen, alleging he molested him as a child.  In 2007, Powell died of a brain tumor before the suit could be resolved.

U.S.-Vatican Ties Remain Strong Despite Differences, Ambassador Says

U.S.-Vatican Ties Remain Strong Despite Differences, Ambassador Says

Relations between the Obama administration and the Vatican remain strong, despite deep-seated ideological differences and recent revelations that U.S. officials criticized the Vatican's diplomacy tactics, according to Miguel Diaz, U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, the AP/San Francisco Chronicle reports. Diaz was responding to interview questions about U.S.-Vatican relations in light of leaked U.S. diplomatic cables that were posted by the website WikiLeaks last year. The cables remarked on aggressive diplomacy to hinder lawsuits over sex abuse scandals and made other critical comments.

According to the AP/Chronicle, the Obama administration has faced sharp criticism from some members of the Catholic hierarchy because the president supports abortion rights and embryonic stem cell research. Obama's election has "presented a challenge" for church leaders in the wake of eight years of camaraderie with his antiabortion-rights predecessor, President George W. Bush, the AP/Chronicle reports.

In 2009, Pope Benedict reiterated the church's stance on abortion during a meeting with President Obama at the Vatican. Vatican officials said Obama pledged to step up efforts to reduce the need for abortion, a position the president advocated during a commencement speech earlier that year at University of Notre Dame. The university's invitation to Obama was opposed by some conservative Catholics, who felt it was inappropriate for an abortion-rights supporter to address the Catholic school (Simpson, AP/San Francisco Chronicle, 1/7).

Americans Reject Media Hoax On Arizona Shootings

Poll: Americans Reject Media Hoax On Arizona Shootings
Paul Joseph Watson
Infowars.com

The establishment media campaign to crassly exploit the tragic Arizona shootings as a way to bludgeon the First Amendment and silence critics of the Obama administration has failed spectacularly, with even a majority of Democrats telling a CBS poll that “violent political rhetoric” was not to blame for the actions of a mentally disturbed madman.

Within minutes of Saturday’s shootings and before the identity of the gunman was even known, establishment mouthpieces like the New York Times and MSNBC, backed up by statist blogs like Huffington Post and the Daily Kos, instantly seized upon the bloodshed to blame the events on tea partiers and what they termed “violent right-wing rhetoric.”

This prompted leftist talking heads, enthusiastically backed by the Associated Press, to contrive a phony national debate about “toning down the rhetoric,” which as we explained, was a mere ploy to politicize the shootings to eviscerate free speech and dissent against big government.

This agenda was made brazenly transparent by the actions of Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who has been heavily criticized for giving a speech shortly after the shootings in which he accused “irresponsible political rhetoric of conservatives,” in particular radio and TV talk show hosts, for the murders of six people.

Even after it emergedthat shooter Jared Lee Loughner was a drug-using, Communist Manifesto-reading occultist whom his classmates had described as being left-wing, the effort to link the events with political opponents of big government continued unabated.

Unfortunately for the architects of this national hoax, a clear majority of the American people just aren’t buying it.

A CBS News nationwide telephone pollfound that, “57 percent of respondents said the harsh political tone had nothing to do with the shooting, compared to 32 percent who felt it did.”

Even a majority of Democrats say that political rhetoric had nothing to do with the shooting.

“Among Democrats 49 percent placed no blame on the heated political tone against 42 percent who did. Among independents the split was 56 percent to 33 percent, CBS said.”

Amongst Republican voters, just 19 per cent blamed political rhetoric for the massacre, versus 69 per cent who rejected such a link.

The fact that Americans are not buying the “tone down the rhetoric” ploy means that Target, Cupid, Fruit Punch, and other examples of violent hate speech will probably survive, at least until they are blamed for the actions of another mentally ill psychotic, clearly motivated by nothing other than his own inner demons.

Ohio city blocks Christian school

Amplify’d from www.onenewsnow.com
City won't allow Tree of Life to take root
Bill Bumpas - OneNewsNow

A Christian school is suing an Ohio city for refusing to grant it a permit to use its own new building.

In an effort to alleviate overcrowding issues and bring in more students, Tree of Life Christian Schools purchased a building in Upper Arlington, Ohio. However, the city zoning code disallows its facility, so with Tree of Life's call for legal help, the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) has filed a federal lawsuit against the city.

"This is a case of unequal treatment," contends Erik Stanley, senior legal counsel for ADF. "It's really a case of discrimination, where Tree of Life Christian Schools has been discriminated against by the City of Upper Arlington's zoning code that allows for similar secular uses, but yet will not allow for a Christian school in the zoning."

For example, notes the attorney, Upper Arlington will allow a daycare facility of any size to occupy a building in the zone.

Erik Stanley (Alliance Defense Fund)"If you look at how the city has defined 'child daycare facility,' it's virtually identical to what Tree of Life does as a Christian school," Stanley points out. "So it makes no sense. In fact, it's unlawful for this city to allow things like a child daycare facility that's identical to the school, but yet will not allow for Tree of Life to locate in its own building."

According to Stanley, government officials are barred from subjecting religious ministries to unequal treatment in zoning laws under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA). Even so, a spokeswoman for Upper Arlington has told The Columbus Dispatch that the city had wanted the school to apply for a re-zoning of the property, but the school refused, in part because that request could be rejected by a referendum. "The city believes its zoning code is sound; it does not discriminate between a religious school or public school," Upper Arlington city planner Chad Gibson told the newspaper.

We are devoting all the necessary resources that a case of this magnitude demands from our office and the Department of Justice. We are focused and we are determined to achieve justice.”

The maximum penalties for the offenses charged in the Criminal Complaint are as follows:

Count 1: Attempted Assassination of a Member of Congress, 18 USC 351(c) – life imprisonment

Counts 2, 3:
Murder of Judge John Roll and Gabriel Zimmerman, 18 USC 1114 and 1111 – death or life imprisonment

Loughner has been charged by criminal complaint of shooting U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, Chief Judge John Roll, and Giffords' staff members Gabriel Zimmerman, Pamela Simon, and Ron Barber on Saturday, January 8, 2011, in Tucson. A criminal complaint is simply the method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The United States Constitution and the Rules of Criminal Procedure require that a grand jury review the evidence and issue an indictment within 30 days of the defendant's initial appearance.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona is in the process of considering charges and drafting an indictment against Loughner.

Thousands without power due to morning blizzard

T is open, but thousands without power due to morning blizzard

By John R. Ellement, Globe Staff

The number of homes and businesses without power is steadily escalating in Massachusetts this morning as heavy, wet snow and powerful gusting winds are downing power lines and causing whiteout conditions on the highways where dozens of crashes have already been reported.

Public officials are urging the public to stay home or use public transportation if necessary.

MBTA General Manager Richard Davey said the sprawling transit system is experiencing some delays, and has had to start shuttle bus service when a tree took down the power supply near the Green Line’s Riverside station.

“Ridership is light, but we are open for business to the extent that folks cannot stay at home today,'' he said.

Davey said mbta.com is experiencing heavy usage. Riders can also call 617-222-3200 where operators can provide the same information usually available on-line.

As of 7:30 a.m., buses are in use between Riverside and Newton Highlands stations because of a downed power line. Buses are also being used to replace the Red Line’s Mattapan high speed line. Commuter boat service from Hingham has been canceled, Davey said.

Logan Airport is open, but Massport spokesman Phil Orlandella said today that airlines have already canceled some 350 flights and the prospects for anyone flying out of East Boston today are not good.

“It looks like gloom and doom today,’’ he said. Orlandella said Massport will get an update from airlines later today on when flights will resume. The storm system is impacting air travel in other parts of the country.

Orlandella urged travelers to check with their airlines before coming to the airport. He noted many airlines are waiving fees for rebooked flights.

At 7:45 a.m. today, National Grid reported that 58,000 customers are now without power in a band that stretched from the Rhode Island border to the North Shore. Heaviest hit, however, are Plymouth County where 25,000 customers have lost power and Essex County where 11,000 are in the dark.

NSTAR reported 5,000 customers without power mostly on Cape Cod.

The National Weather Service said this morning that the worst of the blizzard will hit Massachusetts by 8 a.m., before ending this afternoon. Snow will fall 2 to 3 inches an hour at the height of the blizzard and could total 16 inches or more in parts of the region, the weather service said.

Peter Judge, spokesman for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, said the main concern for today will be damage to energy supplies from the heavy, wet snow. He said the coastal regions, which saw damaging flooding in last month's nor'easter, are likely to be spared this time because of astronomically low tides and the path the storm is taking.

All state offices and courthouses are closed and dozens of school systems, colleges, and religious institutions are also closed today.

Nearly 4,000 pieces of plows and snow moving equipment have been at work on the state highways since 4 a.m., according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. State Police has lowered the speed on the Massachusetts Turnpike to 40 miles per hour.

State Police spokesman David Procopio said this morning that dozens of crashes have been reported on state roads. None, however, resulted in serious injuries or fatalities. Roads are icy and whiteouts have led numerous drivers to head the wrong way on highway ramps.

Boston.com’s traffic partner, sigalert.com, is indicating speeds major roads in greater Boston are generally well below normal.

This episode is produced by the Planet Money team.
Prologue.

Ira Glass speaks with several members of the Planet Money team, who all found themselves—in the course of their reporting—independently asking the same stoner-ish question: What is money? Ira and Planet Money producer Jacob Goldstein discuss a pre-industrial society on the island of Yap that used giant stones as currency. The book that Jacob read about Yap is called The Island of Stone Money. (10 minutes)

Act One. The Lie That Saved Brazil.

A trip to a country where the fiction that is money completely fell apart. And in this same country, through a truly incredible piece of policy making, the government tricked a 150,000,000 people into believing their money had value again. Chana Joffe-Walt reports. (16 minutes)

Act Two. Weekend At Bernanke's.

Though the name of the Federal Reserve includes the word "federal," it's not actually part of the government. It's an independent institution tasked with something very simple, but very huge: Creating money out of thin air. And during this last financial crisis, the leaders of the Fed did things that they would never have considered doing in the past. Alex Blumberg and David Kestenbaum report on what the Fed usually does, and how, since 2008, it's taken a trip to what amounts to Fed Crazytown. (26 minutes)

Arizona Shooter Jared Loughner is Jewish

Arizona Shooter Jared Loughner is Jewish

Arizona Shooter Jared Loughner is Jewish

by James Buchanan

The man who shot 19 people in Arizona, killing six and severely wounding Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, is Jewish according to an interview by a reporter from Mother Jones magazine. The Mother Jones article notes “about eight hours before he allegedly killed six people and wounded 14, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), in Tucson—Jared Lee Loughner phoned an old and close friend with whom he had gone to high school and college. The friend, Bryce Tierney, was up late watching TV, but he didn’t answer the call. When he later checked his voice mail, he heard a simple message from Loughner: ‘Hey man, it’s Jared. Me and you had good times. Peace out. Later.’ That was it.

But later in the day, when Tierney first heard about the Tucson massacre, he had a sickening feeling: ‘They hadn’t released the name, but I said, ‘Holy sh-t, I think it’s Jared that did it.’ ‘ Tierney tells Mother Jones in an exclusive interview that Loughner held a years-long grudge against Giffords and had repeatedly derided her as a ‘fake.’ ….Tierney believes that Loughner was very interested in pushing people’s buttons—and that may have been why he listed Hitler’s Mein Kampf as one of his favorite books on his YouTube page. (Loughner’s mom is Jewish, according to Tierney.)” Loughner also listed the Communist Manifesto as one of his favorite books.

There was a speedy attempt by the left-wing media to portray Loughner as a right-wing lunatic even though other statements by people familiar with Loughner described him as a leftist.

So a mentally ill, left-wing Jew shoots a Congresswoman and the mainstream media tries to pin the blame on the Tea Party, on right-wing White Gentiles and on the pro-White movement. This should be a good reminder to everyone to be suspicious of the mainstream media.

Tucson Shooting Victims

Victims

Dead

Six people were killed in the attack.[78] All but Christina Taylor Green died at the scene of the shooting.[79]

Christina Taylor Green, 9, of Tucson. Green was accompanied to the meeting by a neighbor.[28] Green died at University Medical Center.[5][80] Born on September 11, 2001, she had appeared in the book Faces of Hope: Babies Born on 9/11 (page 41).[81][82][83] She was the daughter of Los Angeles Dodgers scout John Green and Roxanna Green, the granddaughter of former Major League Baseball player and manager Dallas Green[82][84] and second cousin to actress Sophia Bush.[85] She was in third grade and had recently been elected to the student council at Mesa Verde Elementary School.[4][28][80][82]

Dorothy "Dot" Morris, 76. A retired secretary from Oro Valley. Her husband George survived two gunshot wounds while attempting to shield her.[78]

John Roll, 63. Roll was the chief judge for the U.S. District Court for Arizona. Roll was a native of Pennsylvania and a 1969 graduate of the University of Arizona. He began his legal career as a bailiff in Pima County Superior Court and in 1980 joined the office of the U.S. Attorney. He was appointed to the Arizona Appeals Court in 1987 until he was named to the federal bench by President George H. W. Bush in 1991. He had served as presiding judge since 2006.[28][86]
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Roll moved to Arizona as a child. He was born into a Roman Catholic family, and attended Salpointe Catholic High School.[1] He received his B.A. from the University of Arizona in 1969, a J.D. from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1972, and an LL.M. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1990.[3]
...
In 1994, Roll was one of several district court judges who held that provisions of the Brady Law violated the Tenth Amendment,[4] a holding upheld by the Supreme Court in the related case of Printz v. United States.

In 2009, Roll ruled that the case Vicente v. Barnett could go forward. The $32 million lawsuit brought by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) against Arizona rancher Roger Barnett on behalf of 16 Mexican plaintiffs charged that the plaintiffs were assaulted, threatened, and held at gunpoint by Barnett and members of his family. After Roll's ruling and prompted by several talk-radio programs, he was the subject of hundreds of complaining phone calls and death threats and he and his family were under the protection of the U.S. Marshals Service for a month.[5][6][7] Roll declined to press charges when some of those who made threats were identified.[8]
...
Roll was shot on January 8, 2011, outside a Safeway supermarket in Casas Adobes, Arizona,[9] when a gunman opened fire at a "Congress on Your Corner" event held by Democratic U.S. House Representative Gabrielle Giffords; he later succumbed to his injuries, as did five other people. Fourteen others were wounded including Giffords. Roll attended Mass earlier that morning and had decided to attend the event about an hour before the shooting.[10]

Other plaudits came from Senator John McCain, who had recommended Roll for appointment to the federal bench; from Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik; and from Bishop Gerald Kicanas of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, who noted that Roll was an active parishioner who "lived his faith".[12] Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, whose jurisdiction includes Arizona, stated that "Judge Roll was a widely respected jurist, a strong and able leader of his court, and a kind, courteous and sincere gentleman".[12] President Barack Obama commented on Roll's death in his statement issued after the shooting, noting that Roll "served America's legal system for almost 40 years".[13]

Jared Lee Loughner has been charged by federal prosecutors with Roll's murder. Evidence gathered by federal investigators indicates that Rep. Giffords was Loughner's main target. Roll was apparently not specifically targeted - Loughner might not have even known who he was. Roll lived in the area, and a staff member of the targeted Representative suggested that Roll "had simply gone to the Safeway where the shooting occurred to shop."[12] Roll was the first federal judge murdered in office since Robert Vance in 1989.[8]

No Dots To Connect This Time Around?

Following the Ft. Hood Massacre, 14 months ago, there was no attempt to make a connection between ISLAM and Major Hasan's shooting of 43 U.S. soldiers (13 dead and 30 injured) on an Army installation; They failed to connect the dots.
However, this past weekend in Tucson a crazed civilian gunman killed 6 and wounded 14; There was a prompt effort made by Law Enforcement, the media, politicians, and the Administration to spin the event as having been influenced by the lack of civility; The lack of unity, the inability to see things the way they do...

The Fort Hood shooting was a mass shooting that took place on November 5, 2009,
at Fort Hood—the most populous US military installation in the world, located
just outside Killeen, Texas—in which a gunman killed 13 people and wounded 30
others.[2]

The sole suspect is Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army major serving as a psychiatrist. He was shot by Department of the Army Civilian Police officers,[3] and is now paralyzed from the chest down.[4] Hasan has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder under the Uniform Code of Military Justice; he may face additional charges at court-martial.[5][6]

Hasan is an American-born Muslim of Palestinian descent. Internal Army reports indicate officers within the Army were aware of Hasan's tendencies toward radical Islam since 2005. Additionally, investigations before and after the shooting discovered e-mail communications between Hasan and Yemen-based cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who quickly declared Hasan a hero, as "fighting against the U.S. army is an Islamic duty". After communications between the two were forwarded to FBI terrorism task forces in 2008, they determined that Hasan was not a threat prior to the shooting and that his questions to al-Awlaki were consistent with medical research.

In November 2009, after examining the e-mails and previous terrorism
investigations, the FBI had found no information to indicate he had any
co-conspirators or was part of a broader terrorist plot. The U.S. has since
classified Anwar al-Awlaki as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, and the
UN considers Awlaki to be associated with al-Qaeda.[7] Yet a year after the
attack, questions lingered of whether the incident was caused by mental health
issues or Hasan was a terrorist, as government agencies have still not
officially linked Major Hassan to any radical groups. [8]
