Restoring Old Paths

By John Thiel

The Elijah people are to announce the restoration of old paths. How is the God we worship addressed? What is the description of him in the bible?

Daniel 7:9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment [was] white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne [was like] the fiery flame, [and] his wheels [as] burning fire.

Who is the God we worship? The ancient of days. We want to ask him, what are the paths? What is the way? Teach me thy way O Lord. What is he going to teach us? The old paths, paths to dwell in. He is the ancient of days.

Habakkuk 3:6 He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways [are] everlasting.

We are living in the world today where people are very restless. People are looking for change all the time. We go into a shopping centre and we see goods stacked in one way then a month later, it’s all different. People change their household activities as they ever want change. We need to get used to things if we are going to live with him in eternity. His paths to dwell in are always the same. He is a rock but because we who have fallen into sinful ways, especially in these last days, man has deteriorated into lifestyles that are ingrained.

Isaiah 55:6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:

55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

55:8 For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

55:9 For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Everyone is addressed. There was a time in my life when I thought I’ve got Gods ways. He is saying to every one of us your ways are not my ways or thoughts. Open your heart to receive my ways. Examine whether you’ve accepted all my ways or not. It is the duty of Gods servants who have recognised that and opened the heart to his ways to make known these ways to the children of men.

Psalm 145:10 All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee.

145:11 They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;

145:12 To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom.

His saints will make known to others his ways. The glory of Gods ways are to be made know by Gods servants. We are to be the Elijah people if we will. We are in need of knowing Gods ways so we can make them known.

Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Are you prepared to heed the things that God will show us? The things we know not? Some things we may already know. There are some things we may not know. We will only pick up things he shows us.

Isaiah 42:16 And I will bring the blind by a way [that] they knew not; I will lead them in paths [that] they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

What did Jesus call the Pharisees? Blind leaders of the blind. I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not. I will lead them in paths that they have not known. The world is covered in darkness in the last days. Like the Pharisees of old, the ministers of the churches today have been blind leaders of the blind. Gods messengers like Elijah will lead them in the way. The Elijah people are restoring the ways of God. Here are going to be a people on earth comfortable to live the ways of God. If we are not prepared, heaven will be a plague spot for us. We will be very uncomfortable if we are not prepared to live there.

Isaiah 58:12 And [they that shall be] of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

The restorer of a lifestyle, what is your lifestyle? Is your lifestyle according to Gods lifestyle? The things you do, the way you live and dress, the way you eat. Whatever you do, do all according to the law of God. Is that my lifestyle today? We are to be restorers of a lifestyle that is of God. The old way. That is what we are to ask for. If we come humbly into the presence of God and ask him, he will show us things we didn’t know.

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where [is] the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk [therein].

Have you ever come along a road and come to the spaghetti junctions? What does he say? Stand there in the ways. See all the paths, see and ask what is the good way? Among all the different ways of life and lifestyle. We all claim we have a right way. There are the ways of death. There is only one way, and it’s not the way that seems right to us. Ask the Lord, I don’t know, I’m confused. How am I going to order my life according to your way?

Deuteronomy 32:7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will show thee; thy elders, and they  will tell thee. Many people say our fathers were wrong. They wouldn’t go mixed bathing, the women wouldn’t wear shear stockings, the women would all have long hair, that’s not important they say! The younger children tell the older people, you’re wrong, this is the right way. What does the bible say? Go ask the fathers and the elders. Where did they get their information from? How is the bible written? Isn’t it from father to son under inspiration. Is God the same today as he was yesterday? Go to the old paths, ask for them. Do you believe that religion today is better than our forefathers?  Is Christianity better today than what is was yesterday? No. Then why are we arguing? Things are not better today, if Christianity was better, then things would be better. Those things that have been established by the ancient of days, the old, not the new. Not these restless souls that change circumstances always. Today adults are undisciplined little children. I’m so bored. Why? I want change. I want to dress differently today than yesterday.  What am I going to preach about? What sort of a preacher am I going to be if I’m going to be an Elijah preacher?

The Old and New Testament Scriptures show us the only way in which this work should be done. Repent, repent, repent, was the message rung out by John the Baptist in the wilderness. Christ’s message to the people was Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:5. And the apostles were commanded to preach everywhere that men should repent. The Lord desires His servant today to preach the old gospel doctrine, sorrow for sin, repentance, and confession. We want old-fashioned sermons, old-fashioned customs, old-fashioned fathers and mothers in Israel. The sinner must be labored for, perseveringly, earnestly, wisely, until he shall see that he is a transgressor of God’s law, and shall exercise repentance toward God, and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. When the sinner is conscious of his helpless condition, and feels his need of a Saviour, he may come with hope and faith to the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. Christ will accept the soul that comes to Him in true repentance. A broken and contrite heart He will not despise. {3MR 28.1}

The Elijah people in these last days have an old fashioned lifestyle to proclaim headed by the Ancient of days. Let us ask our father, what are these old fashioned ways we are meant to be restoring? What are the paths we should be studying so we can repent of our old ways?

Acts 3:20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:

3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

Jesus is waiting in heaven until his people have restored all the paths.

In the time of the end every divine institution is to be restored. {PK 678.2}

In our question, Lord, what are the hold paths of lifestyle? Where do you think we should turn for the answer? Genesis? It’s the meaning of the beginning. Some of these things you already know. What we are addressing here is for those who also don’t know.

Genesis 1:31. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, [it was] very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Is that a divine institution? Man comes along and says, one in seven is good enough. What else did he institute back there?

Genesis 2:21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

21:22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God [is] with thee in all that thou doest:

21:23 Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son: [but] according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.

21:24 And Abraham said, I will swear.

What was this institution called? Marriage. Restoration of the marriage institution.

Matthew 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

Among the Seventh Day Adventist ministers, 51% have divorced and remarried. Why? What did Jesus say? Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you. In all the arguments of divorce and remarriage that is the strongest argument. In the beginning it was not so.  What are the Elijah people to do? Restore that institution. God created Adam and Eve and what did he institute?

Genesis 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

God instituted in Eden the diet for man. It’s an ancient institution. When man sinned he gave him medicine.

Genesis 3:18 Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to thee and thou shalt eat the herb of the field.

What did God institute in the beginning for food? Foods, grains and nuts. After sin? Vegetables. Your body can handle vegetables when sick better sometimes than fruit. Fruit stirs the poisons.  Can you see the restoration of this institution?

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

1:27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Adam and Eve were covered in a garment of light as the angels before sin in Eden. God created them in his own image.

Psalms 104:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.

104:2 Who coverest [thyself] with light as [with] a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

If you’re covered with light, are you clothed? God covers himself with light. That is a divine institution. The nobility, majesty and glory of godly modesty.

Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

They say their nakedness and began to make fig leaves. Were they still ashamed when they wore aprons of fig leaves? Today people wear clothes that are not even as covering as fig leaves. God’s people cover their shame as God covered them.

Genesis 1:28. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

God placed man into the care of this planet to subdue the earth.

Genesis 2:15. And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

I’m putting you into the garden, but as you multiply, make the garden bigger. They would do exactly as God instituted. To live in nature. That was Gods lifestyle for man. Who was the first city builder? Cain. Who was he? Man of God? No. City living is not an institution of God. The old paths. You wonder why John the Baptist was in the wilderness? Elijah in nature? This is Gods way. He wants us to restore and make changes.

Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

40:4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:

What God had instituted in the beginning was the good way. What has God man got out of it? Many ways. We are on a spaghetti junction. We are to discover, look at myself, what is my lifestyle? What does repentance mean? It’s not just sorry Lord but forsake your past and change your lifestyle. That is the old fashioned message. I had to change my ways. It’s not my way, its Gods way. I’m still changing because all of Gods ways are not yet my way. As I’m changing, people ridicule me as my actions appear to ridicule others. If you are going to put things into action as God has required, you’ll be ridiculed. We have addressed a foundation here. It’s up to you and me to examine the detail of everything. Why did God cover Adam and Eve in coats of skins? When sin came into the atmosphere, the weather changed. As soon as soon came the air became chilled. Gods form of clothing is there to give you even temperature that existed in Eden. There are many different sources of research that show this. To show us detail, God has sent his spirit already in these last days.

1 Corinthians 1:4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;

1:5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and [in] all knowledge;

1:6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:

1:7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

1:8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, [that ye may be] blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We might come behind in no gift waiting for the coming of the Lord. We need to be in a position where we will be blameless in the sight of our Lord Jesus Christ. What gift did he give? Spirit of Prophecy.

Revelation 19:10. And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See [thou do it] not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

That gift is there to illuminate our minds on Gods original way of life. Do we have the testimony of Jesus today? That deals with every detail of lifestyle?

Early in my youth I was asked several times, Are you a prophet? I have ever responded, I am the Lord’s messenger. I know that many have called me a prophet, but I have made no claim to this title. My Saviour declared me to be His messenger. Your work, He instructed me, is to bear My word. Strange things will arise, and in your youth I set you apart to bear the message to the erring ones, to carry the word before unbelievers, and with pen and voice to reprove from the Word actions that are not right. Exhort from the Word. I will make My Word open to you. It shall not be as a strange language. In the true eloquence of simplicity, with voice and pen, the messages that I give shall be heard from one who has never learned in the schools. My Spirit and My power shall be with you. {1SM 32.2}

Be not afraid of man, for My shield shall protect you. It is not you that speaketh: it is the Lord that giveth the messages of warning and reproof. Never deviate from the truth under any circumstances. Give the light I shall give you. The messages for these last days shall be written in books, and shall stand immortalized, to testify against those who have once rejoiced in the light, but who have been led to give it up because of the seductive influences of evil. {1SM 32.3}

Why have I not claimed to be a prophet?–Because in these days many who boldly claim that they are prophets are a reproach to the cause of Christ; and because my work includes much more than the word prophet signifies. {1SM 32.4}

What are we surrounded about today? The seductive influences of evil. Have we beheld with our eyes, that the original ways have been seductively deviated? We are to go to that which God had given in the spirit of prophecy. There is an answer to every detail of lifestyle in those writings. The spirit of Elijah came directly through this person and the people who supported it. That’s what I preach. I praise God for saving my sanity. I was at the spaghetti junction.

40:5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see [it] together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken [it].

40:6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh [is] grass, and all the goodliness thereof [is] as the flower of the field:

40:7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people [is] grass.

40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

40:9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift [it] up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!

When we take Gods word seriously and expect something of it, we always come up with a big surprise as it’s different than we expected. Are some of the things we have contemplated at this conference already different than we expected? Is there something they have said is different than expected? An item of the path that is different to what I’m used to. The loud cry is not just what you say but what you’re doing. The Elijah people have to stand there like John the Baptist. You think you have given everything to God but you’ve been full of self in what you’ve been doing. When you come to Jesus, give him everything. The things you know and don’t know so that when the truth comes up before you. If you are in that state then you’re in a position if you were to fall into the bottom of the sea, it doesn’t matter, it’s all surrendered to God. John separated himself from his friends and life living on a vegetable diet. The symbol of his dress (camel’s hair) was a rebuke to the people of that day. His diet was a rebuke to the gluttony that everyone. His diet was St John’s bread. The work of John was told of by the prophet Malachi.

Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

He was a representative of those living in the last days, to whom God has intrusted sacred truths to present before the people, to prepare the way for the second appearing of Christ. And the same principles of temperance which John practiced should be observed by those who in our day are to warn the world of the coming of the Son of man. {CTBH 39.1}

Amen

Net Neutrality Passes, Immediately Pisses Everyone Off

Net Neutrality Passes, Immediately Pisses Everyone OffThe Federal Communications Commission today approved rules discouraging internet access providers from charging websites for favorable treatment. That might sound like a good thing, but it's actually a terrible surrender to big business, or alternatively a communist plot.

The ACLU said "the FCC has failed to protect free speech" while a Republican FCC commissioner called the vote one of the "darkest days in recent FCC history" and an act of vigilantism. What actually happened is that the commission forbade internet service providers from blocking content; required them to disclose how they filter traffic, for example by slowing down BitTorrent connections; and forbade them from "unreasonable" discrimination against websites, for example by giving some sites more bandwidth. Wireless service providers are exempt from the discrimination ban, however.

So it's a messy compromise with various loopholes. In case you don't want to read the decision — or wait for the text to finally be made public, which for some reason hasn't happened yet — you can just read how the worst company in America, evil ISP Comcast, describes it: "A workable balance." Scary.

Couple on Game Show Loses $800,000 for Answering Question Correctly

Amplify’d from gawker.com

Couple on Game Show Loses 0,000 for Answering Question Correctly On the Fox game show Million Dollar Money Drop, a couple was asked which product was sold first in stores: Post-It Notes, the Macintosh, or the Walkman. They answered Post-It Notes, which is correct. They were told they were wrong.

Apparently Post-It Notes didn't go on sale nationally until 1980, but were market tested in four cities starting in 1977. So that means they beat the Walkman, which debuted in 1979. The question was not posed as "sold in stores nationally," it was simply "sold in stores." Now, while the couple's reasoning wasn't exactly sound while making their decision, they did sorta blunder into the right answer.

Will Fox correct their mistake? Probably not. But, the couple should at least know they were right, so that poor man doesn't feel guilty for the rest of his life.

Dad allegedly shoots, gravely wounds son - UPI.com

JOLIET, Ill., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Illinois police expect to file charges against a man for allegedly shooting his 12-year-old son, who was hospitalized in grave condition, officials said.

Police Monday arrested Roderick D. Tademy, 36, of Joliet outside his apartment where the incident occurred and questioned him at the police station, the Joliet Herald-News reported.

"The 36-year-old mother told officers her husband had shot the boy," Police Chief Fred Hayes said.

The mother took the gun from Tademy and gave it to investigators, Hayes said.

The child suffered a gunshot wound to the head, the Herald-News said.

"This investigation is ongoing but it appears this shooting was intentional -- not accidental," Hayes said.

Two 6-year-old siblings also in the apartment during the incident and reported to be at the hospital with their mother will be given victim-sensitive interviews, Hayes said.

Police said they planned to search the home after obtaining a warrant.

Teacher charged with sex with teen - UPI.com

BALTIMORE, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A Baltimore elementary school teacher found in a parked car at midnight with a 15-year-old boy faces sex and assault charges, authorities say.

Mark Allen Hyzer, 25, has been placed on leave from his job at the Beechfield School, The Baltimore Sun reported. He was being held in the Harford County Jail, charged with third- and fourth-degree sex offenses, sexual abuse of a minor and second-degree assault.

Hyzer was arrested by police responding to a call late Saturday about a suspicious car in Bel Air in the Baltimore suburbs. Officers said Hyzer was in the driver's seat and the teenager in the passenger seat.

Both allegedly acknowledged to police they had been having sex.

"Their stories pretty much matched," said Sgt. David Betz, head of the county police child advocacy center.

Motive unclear in Michigan woman's slaying

LIVONIA, Mich., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A Michigan college instructor has been ordered to appear in court later this month on charges she shot her transgendered sibling's girlfriend to death.

Julie Ann Hopwood, 56, Charlotte, was arraigned over the weekend on a murder charges and ordered to return to a Romulus courtroom Dec. 28 for further proceedings.

Hopwood, who teaches respiratory therapy part time at Central Piedmont Community College, allegedly opened fire on Amy Chesbro outside Chesbro's office in Livonia.

Police have released few details on the slaying; however members of Hopwood's family said the defendant and her one-time sister had been at odds since the sibling had started living as a man several years ago, The Detroit News said..

The News said Tuesday that the former sister, PJ Redbird TwoRavens, was believed to be engaged to the 35-year-old Chesbro.

"As best I understood it, she didn't like when her younger sister changed sex," said TwoRavens' uncle, Frederick Leetch. "I think this is something that's been bothering her because she didn't have a sister anymore."

Livonia police told the News Leetch's theory was incorrect. Other members of the Hopwood family said they had no explanation for the shooting and were devastated by Chesbro's death.

Sheriff: Banker probably killed himself

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A Detroit-area bank executive whose body was found after he had been missing for a month almost certainly took his own life, investigators say.

David Widlak's family disputes the Macomb County sheriff's finding of suicide, The Detroit News reported. The family arranged for a private autopsy by the Oakland County medical examiner and has hired a law firm to investigate the death.

Widlak, 62, chief executive officer of Community Central Bank and a Grosse Pointe Farms resident, was last seen at the office in Mount Clemens on Sept. 19. Duck hunters found his body in a lake a month later and his handgun was recovered nearby.

A piece of paper in his hand was unreadable after being underwater for weeks, the News said.

Macomb County Sheriff Walter Hackel said the case is not closed. But he said there is a "strong indication" of suicide and no evidence of foul play.

Todd Flood, whose firm was retained by the Widlak family, disagrees.

"All indication from our experts show that it's a homicide," Flood said. "Crimes don't happen in the middle of Ford Field. They happen in dark, secluded spots, and this is where this crime happened."

The gunshot wound to Widlak's neck was found by Oakland County Medical Examiner L.J. Dragovic. He reported Widlak was shot "execution style" while his Macomb County colleague David Spitz said the wound was probably self-inflicted.

"He said it was for protection in case someone tried to rob them," Sgt. Gregory Blake told the Sandusky (Ohio) Register. "It appears like an accidental shooting."

Newspaper Lawsuit Factory Sues Over ‘Death Ray’ Image

Righthaven, the Las Vegas copyright troll formed this spring, has moved beyond lawsuits over newspaper articles and begun targeting websites for the unauthorized reposting of images. First up, more than a dozen infringement lawsuits concerning the so-called Vdara “death ray.”

The Vdara “death ray” describes the south-facing tower at the Vdara Hotel along the Las Vegas Strip. Sunlight bounces from the tower and dramatically heats up the pool area during certain times of the day and year.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal posted a graphic to accompany a September story about the death ray, which quoted a tourist whose hair allegedly was singed by the focused sun. The reposting of the graphic, first reported by the Las Vegas Sun, is now the subject of at least 14 infringement suits brought by Righthaven on behalf of the Review-Journal.

Suing over images appears to be a new tack in Righthaven’s legal strategy. Righthaven’s business model is to acquire the copyright to content from newspaper companies, such as Stephens Media, whose flagship is the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and Media News Group, whose major daily is the San Jose Mercury News. The company then sues blogs and other websites that have posted or excerpted those articles. Until this month, it had focused exclusively on the article texts.

The image-based lawsuits may be part of Righthaven’s efforts to curtail a “fair use” defense to its claims. Last month the company indicated it would no longer sue over brief excerpts of articles after a Nevada judge agreed with a real estate firm’s argument that posting a mere eight of 30 sentences from a Review-Journal story qualified as fair use.

Fair use is a defense to copyright infringement, which otherwise carries fines of up to $150,000 per violation. The courts must consider the “effect and use upon the potential market” of the infringed work, the “purpose” of the infringing activity and, among other factors, the “amount” of the infringing work used. There is no bright-line rule as to what constitutes a fair use, and it can apply regardless of whether the infringed material is text or images.

X-45

Five years ago, the Pentagon was on cusp of an air-combat revolution. For a few brief, heady months in late 2005, it looked like the U.S. military might soon launch full-scale development of a new class of fast, lethal Unmanned Aerial Vehicles eventually capable of replacing all kinds of fighter jets, from the older F-15s, F-16s and F-18s to the latest F-22s.

But the revolution fizzled when the Air Force abandoned its share of the so-called Joint Unmanned Combat Air System effort. Manned jets continued to dominate, culminating in today’s mammoth, $300-billion F-35 program.

The embers of upheaval kept burning, almost invisibly. The technology from the 2005 effort survived in various forms, slowly maturing amid a growing demand for combat UAVs. Today, no fewer than three separate killer drone designs — two of them direct descendants of the original J-UCAS demonstrators — have converged on two airfields in California for flight tests.

The revolution flared up again without many people noticing. While the F-35 still gobbles up the bulk of the Pentagon’s fighter funding, jet-powered killer drones are back — and revolution is once again a real prospect.

High-endurance armed drones such as the General Atomics Predator have been a fixture of U.S. military operations since the mid-1990s air war over the Balkans. Besides being cheaper to buy and operate, robot aircraft carry fuel in place of a pilot and so can stay in the air longer.

Plus, if they crash or get shot down, nobody gets hurt. That means the military can assign drones to what a robot-industry insider from Boeing called the “worst down-and-dirty missions that even the nuttiest pilot wouldn’t want to do.”

But today’s drones are “fair-weather” killers, too slow to survive the sophisticated air defenses of, say, China or Iran. To bring the advantages of robot aircraft to high-intensity warfare, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency along with the Air Force and Navy sponsored J-UCAS starting in 2003. Boeing’s X-45 (pictured) competed with the Northrop Grumman-built X-47 to “demonstrate the technical feasibility, military utility and operational value for a networked system of high performance, weaponized unmanned air vehicles,” according to Darpa.

By 2005, the J-UCAS program had sent its prototypes on mock bombing runs and proved the drones could develop their own tactics on the fly. The “Common Operating System” meant to control the speedy, lethal bots was particularly promising, and with it J-UCAS even threatened to upstage the $300-billion F-35 manned-fighter program. The new drones were “on the cusp of making history in the aviation world,” said the insider.

Then in 2006, the axe fell. The Air Force withdrew from the program. Officially, the Air Force wanted to shift its focus and cash to the new, manned (and ultimately short-lived) “2018 bomber.”

There were concerns that algorithms might not be trustworthy to make combat decisions, quite yet. Unofficially, the move away from J-UCAS might have reflected concerns among the Air Force’s top brass that the new killer drone could hasten the demise of the traditional fighter pilot.

In any event, without the Air Force J-UCAS collapsed. The Navy continued funding the X-47 for a modest series of tests. The original X-45 ended up an exhibit in the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum, never to fly again.

Or so observers believed. In fact, Boeing had secretly continued work on a new version of the X-45, apparently believing the Air Force would come back around to the idea of fighter-style killer drones. Meanwhile, a high-profile think piece co-written by future Navy undersecretary Bob Work (.pdf) helped persuade the Navy to raise its expectations for the X-47. Sensing a new momentum for armed UAVs, General Atomics spent its own money to develop a bigger, jet-powered cousin of the Predator called the Avenger.

In the summer of 2009, the Air Force published a “road map” showing how robots might replace nearly every kind of manned aircraft in today’s arsenal. Just a few months later, the air branch lifted the (patchy) veil of secrecy surrounding its fighter-like MQ-170 spy drone, built by Lockheed Martin.

The stage has been set for an unofficial revival of J-UCAS. There are no official requirements for a new fighter drone — yet. But the Pentagon is obviously very, very interested.

As is often the case, the drama is taking place in California. Northrop’s X-47 is at the Navy’s China Lake base in the Mojave Desert, running ground tests prior to a planned first flight “before the end of the year.”

Not to be outdone by its former J-UCAS rival, Boeing two weeks ago bolted the new-and-improved X-45 to the back of a 747 for a ride from St. Louis to the Golden State’s Edwards Air Force Base, where the bot will have its first flight early next year. General Atomics beat both of the bigger companies into the air: The Avenger has racked up scores of test flights at Edwards since 2009.

Years ago, one analyst called J-UCAS “the worst-funded good idea in decades.” There’s still not a lot of government money behind the current revival: The Navy has allocated around a billion dollars for X-47 tests. The X-45 and the Avenger are both company-funded efforts.

But the idea is as good as ever. And with the impending first flights of the X-45 and X-47, killer drones are about to get a second shot at transforming aerial warfare.

Danger Room will be there, every step of the way.

There’s a Mini Ice Age Coming, Says Man Who Beats Weather Experts

The Sydney Morning Herald
Piers Corbyn not only predicted the current weather, but he believes things are going to get much worse, says Boris Johnson, London’s mayor

The man who repeatedly beats the Met Office at its own game

Well, folks, it’s tea-time on Sunday and for anyone involved in keeping people moving it has been a hell of a weekend. Thousands have had their journeys wrecked, tens of thousands have been delayed getting away for Christmas; and for those Londoners who feel aggrieved by the performance of any part of our transport services, I can only say that we are doing our level best.

Almost the entire Tube system was running on Sunday and we would have done even better if it had not been for a suicide on the Northern Line, and the temporary stoppage that these tragedies entail. Of London’s 700 bus services, only 50 were on diversion, mainly in the hillier areas. On Saturday, we managed to keep the West End plentifully supplied with customers, and retailers reported excellent takings on what is one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

We have kept the Transport for London road network open throughout all this. We have about 90,000 tons of grit in stock, and the gritters were out all night to deal with this morning’s rush. And yet we have to face the reality of the position across the country.

Canon Lawyer: Bishops Have Authority Over the Word "Catholic"

Canon Lawyer: Bishops Have Authority Over the Word "Catholic"

This article comes from the In the Light of the Law blog.

---------------------------------------

Lisa Fullam's dangerous advice should be ignored

When informed that the Vatican would oppose him, Joseph Stalin shrugged and asked “How many troops does the pope have?” To the dictator, the only views that mattered were those backed-up by men with guns.

Lisa Fullam has offered authorities at Catholic Healthcare West / St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix similarly myopic, even dangerous, advice when she suggested that, because the word “Catholic” is not copyright-able, the enterprise should continue to call itself “Catholic” despite Bp. Thomas Olmsted’s threatened prohibition of such use, and simply “let the canonical chips fall where they may.” Apparently Fullam believes that, since men with badges will never show up to enforce a cease-and-desist order (that will never be issued) by a civil court regarding the word “Catholic”, Catholic hospital officials need not worry about bishops tossing a few “canonical chips” their way.

I strongly suggest that St. Joseph's seek advice from another expert.

If the only criterion for authentic Catholic conduct is “what Church rules are enforceable by civil courts?”, then there won’t be much left of Catholic codes of conduct. Thank God. I don’t want states being the final arbiter of what is acceptable Catholic conduct and what is not, and I would hope that Fullam doesn’t want that, either.

But if Fullam’s point is that a bishop’s authority over the use of the label “Catholic” is, absent state enforcement options, nugatory, then she needs to study up on some elementary canon law (and ecclesiology, for that matter). A bishop’s authority over the use of the word “Catholic” is reflected in, e.g., 1983 CIC 216 and 300, and those norms just get the conversation started. Canons 1319 comes next to mind, but an exploration of those options goes beyond what I can cover in blog post.

Fullam’s nonchalance about ecclesiastical authority notwithstanding, I suggest that Catholic Healthcare West / St. Joseph's Hospital officials put a careful reading of these and related canons on the agenda for their next meeting.

I’m pretty sure that Bp. Olmsted has them memorized.

DREAM Act Fails in Senate

DREAM Act Fails in Senate

This article comes from America.

DREAM Act Fails to Pass 111th Congress; Back in 112th?

The Senate's inability to overcome a threatened filibuster Dec. 18 scuttled passage of the DREAM Act, prompting immigrant advocates to pledge to push forward on immigration reform next year with a new Congress and fight for what one immigrant leader termed the "respect we deserve."

The bill would have given young people brought to the United States as children by their undocumented parents a path to citizenship under a strict set of requirements. Under the measure, an estimated 2.1 million children of undocumented parents would have had an opportunity to go to college or join the military and legalize their status.

The U.S. bishops had long been supporters of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, which passed the House Dec. 9. Four U.S. bishops, including Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles, took part in a Dec. 17 conference call with reporters to argue for passage in the Senate.

The Senate needed 60 votes to break the filibuster, but fell five short, with 55 against it and 41 for it.

"Catholic Charities USA is deeply disappointed that the Senate rejected the vote on this important piece of legislation," said a Dec. 20 statement from Father Larry Snyder, Catholic Charities' president and CEO.

"Honor students, class presidents, athletes and responsible community members who desire a brighter future by continuing their education came up short this past weekend. Now, having entered our country as small children, they will continue to be cast into the shadows until, as a nation, we can find a way to address our broken immigration system," Father Snyder said.

"Today's vote on the DREAM Act, which ironically was held on the very day in which migrant communities around the world commemorate international migrant's day, represents the latest example of a failed political and legislative strategy when it comes to immigrant rights and immigration policy," said Oscar Chacon, executive director of the National Alliance for Latin American and Caribbean Communities, in a Dec. 18 statement.

"In particular, Latino immigrant communities must be creative and effective when it comes to our own organizing, empowerment and alliance building capacity in order to achieve the respect we deserve, but that so far has been denied to us," Chacon said.

Republican opponents of the DREAM Act saw the measure was a backdoor into granting amnesty for all illegal immigrants. "Treating the symptoms of the problem might make us feel better ... but it can allow the underlying problem to metastasize. Unfortunately, that's what's happening at our border," said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz, said in a statement.

But Kjersten Forseth, executive director of ProgressNow Colorado, said: "The DREAM Act is a sensible and compassionate solution to a major problem in American immigration law, which has been routinely held hostage by the right wing and used in their campaign to demonize their political opponents."

"Fixing unintended problems in the law with regard to children in America, so they can attend college or serve our country, is good for our economy," Forseth said in a Dec. 18 statement.

The 55-41 Senate vote was largely along party lines. Five Democrats voted to support the filibuster, and three Republicans voted to block it.

AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka call the filibuster "a disappointing endorsement of injustice and inequality."

Harry Potter Star Beaten and Threatened with "Honor Killing" for Dating Non-Muslim

Afshan Azad is still in hiding after being beaten by her father and brother. Too terrified of recriminations from her family and the ummah.

The media is hard pressed to ignore the religious motivation, Islam, in this attempted femicide, as both parents were both born in the UK. A glaring fact sadly ignored by all media. This story as a whole, in fact, is sadly ignored by most media.

Harry Potter actress was 'beaten and branded a prostitute by her family after dating man who was not a Muslim' Daily Mail hat tip Pat

Star: Afshan Azad, 22, pictured last month at the premiere of the latest Harry Potter movie, The Deathly Hallows

A Harry Potter actress was beaten, called a 'slag' and threatened with death after she met a young man who was not a Muslim, a court heard today.

Victim Afshan Azad, 22, played Padma Patil, a classmate of the teenage wizard, in the blockbuster Hollywood films based on the children's books by JK Rowling.

She was assaulted and branded a 'prostitute' after meeting a young Hindu man, a relationship which brought anger from her father, Abul Azad, 53, and brother, Ashraf, 28, Manchester Crown Court heard.

The frightened star, who has featured in four of the popular films, later fled through her bedroom window after threats were made to kill her.

But despite attempts to get her to come to court for the trial of her father and brother, Miss Azad, who is believed to be living with friends in London, would not attend voluntarily, the court was told.

Both men were charged with making threats to kill her and her brother was also charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm on his sister.

Instead of both going on trial today, the prosecution decided to accept a guilty plea of assault by her brother, and both men were formally found not guilty of making threats to kill.

US Bishop Revokes Hospital's Catholic Status

Bishop Olmsted revokes Phoenix hospital's status as Catholic facility

By J.D. Long-Garcia

Catholic News Service

PHOENIX (CNS) -- St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix can no longer identify itself as "Catholic," Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted announced during a Dec. 21 news conference in Phoenix at the Diocesan Pastoral Center.

The Phoenix bishop issued a decree revoking the 115-year-old hospital's affiliation with the Catholic Church. In the decree, the bishop wrote that he could not verify that the hospital provides health care consistent with "authentic Catholic moral teaching."

"I really want to have Catholic health care," Bishop Olmsted said during the news conference. "We should be working together, not against each other."

Still, he said it was his duty to strip St. Joseph's Hospital of its Catholic identity because its leadership, as well as that of its parent organization, San Francisco-based Catholic Healthcare West, is not committed to "following the teachings of the Catholic Church."

To demonstrate that the hospital is no longer Catholic, Bishop Olmsted is prohibiting the celebration of Mass on the hospital's campus and will have the Blessed Sacrament removed from the hospital's chapel.

Linda Hunt, president of St. Joseph's, said in a statement after the bishop's news conference that the hospital was "deeply disappointed" by the action but would "continue through our words and deeds to carry out the healing ministry of Jesus."

In May, officials at St. Joseph's publicly acknowledged that an abortion occurred at the hospital in late 2009. The Arizona Republic, in its initial story on the matter, also revealed that Mercy Sister Margaret McBride had incurred an automatic excommunication because of her role on the ethics committee that sanctioned the abortion.

"Consistent with our values of dignity and justice, if we are presented with a situation in which a pregnancy threatens a woman's life, our first priority is to save both patients," Hunt said in her statement. "If that is not possible, we will always save the life we can save, and that is what we did in this case.

"We continue to stand by the decision, which was made in collaboration with the patient, her family, her caregivers and our ethics committee," she added. "Morally, ethically and legally we simply cannot stand by and let someone die whose life we might be able to save."

The public scandal resulting from the 2009 abortion isn't the first time Bishop Olmsted took issue with Catholic Healthcare West's adherence to the "Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services," to which all Catholic hospitals in the United States are required to adhere.

Seven years ago, the bishop learned that Catholic Healthcare West did not comply with these directives at Chandler Regional Hospital.

"I have continued to insist that this scandalous situation needed to change," the bishop said. "Sadly, over the course of these years, CHW has chosen not to comply."

During the news conference, Bishop Olmsted detailed other Catholic Healthcare West facility violations of the U.S. bishops' directives.

St. Joseph's Hospital is involved with the Mercy Care Plan -- an organization that provides health care through Arizona's Medicaid program. By virtue of its involvement in the plan, the hospital has been "formally cooperating with a number of medical procedures" against Catholic teaching -- a fact that the bishop said he learned about in the past few weeks.

This cooperation included setting up a structure through which patients receive procedures -- such as abortions and sterilizations -- which are against church teaching, according to Father John Ehrich, director of medical ethics for the Phoenix Diocese.

Learning about the Mercy Care Plan was the "tipping point" in Bishop Olmsted's relationship with the hospital, Father Ehrich said.

The Mercy Care Plan, the largest provider of Medicaid in Arizona, has been in existence for 26 years. In meetings with diocesan leadership, the hospital said it had learned of Mercy Care Plan's cooperation with unethical procedures 16 months ago.

"They hid it from the bishop for a year and a half," Father Ehrich said. The hospital, he said, promised to address the issue but had signed contracts good through 2013.

"It's a systemic problem," Father Ehrich said. "We're not talking about one isolated incident."

Through its involvement in the Mercy Care Plan, the bishop said Catholic Healthcare West has been responsible for a litany of practices in direct conflict with Catholic teaching. These include: contraceptive counseling, provision of various forms of contraception, voluntary sterilization and abortions "due to the mental or physical health of the mother or when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest."

"The Catholic faithful are free to seek care or to offer care at St. Joseph's Hospital," the bishop said. "But I cannot guarantee that the care provided will be in full accord with the teachings of the church."

Bishop Olmsted, explaining his authority to revoke the Catholic identity of St. Joseph's Hospital, cited Canon 216, which states: "No undertaking is to claim the name Catholic without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority."

"I have hoped and prayed that this day would not come," the bishop said. "However, the faithful of the diocese have a right to know whether institutions of this importance are indeed Catholic in identity and practice."

After learning about the abortion earlier in the year, Bishop Olmsted met with hospital officials to learn more about the particular case, he said at the news conference.

"It became clear that, in their decision to abort, the equal dignity of mother and her baby were not both upheld," he said. The baby "was directly killed," which is a violation of the ethical and religious directives.

Throughout the process, St. Joseph's Hospital and Catholic Healthcare West have maintained that the intention was to save "the only life that could be saved," the mother's, according to the hospital.

The bishop responded to the claim in a May 14 statement, reiterating that "the direct killing of an unborn child is always immoral, no matter the circumstances, and it cannot be permitted in any institution that claims to be authentically Catholic."

The U.S. bishops' Committee on Doctrine also weighed in on the issue with a June 23 statement.

"No circumstance, no purpose, no law whatsoever can ever make licit an act which is intrinsically illicit, since it is contrary to the law of God which is written in every human heart, knowable by reason itself and proclaimed by the church," the committee said.

The withdrawal of a hospital's Catholic identification is not without precedent.

Bishop Robert F. Vasa of Baker, Ore., announced in February that St. Charles Medical Center in Bend had "gradually moved away" from the church's ethical directives and can no longer be called Catholic.

As a result of that decision, Mass is no longer celebrated in the hospital's chapel and all items considered Catholic were removed from the hospital and returned to the church. The hospital retained the St. Charles name and a cross remains atop the building.

Police: York woman faked sickness, fled

AMANDA DOLASINSKI The York Dispatch

Police are searching for a York City woman who they say faked an illness to escape from a constable vehicle Monday afternoon.

Arianna Chantel Grier, 20, of the 600 block of Cleveland Street in York City, was being transported for two warrants. She picked up two more charges Monday - escape and theft.

A York County constable was on North George Street near Dewey Avenue in North York around 5:32 p.m. when he reported she escaped to Northern York County Regional Police.

The constable said Grier feigned an illness and complained that she was nauseated. Grier, who was handcuffed with her hands in front of her, was able to put her window down, police said.

As the vehicle slowed for a traffic stop, Grier reached outside and opened the door. She then jumped out and ran toward Prospect Hill Cemetery. She could not be located, police said.

Grier is described as a black female, about 5-foot-6 and weighing 110 pounds. She was last seen wearing a maroon-colored puffy coat and handcuffs.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or use the crime tip reporting section of Northern York County Regional Police Department's website at nycrpd.org.
