(CNN) -- Petrol bombs and stones were thrown at police protecting a gay pride march Sunday in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, an interior ministry representative told CNN.

About 40 police officers were injured, and about 60 people were arrested, the ministry's Suzana Vasiljevic told CNN. None of the marchers were injured.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic had urged people to allow the march to go ahead without incident, Serbia's Tanjug news agency reported Saturday.

"It is very important that the event, which might be disagreeable to most of Serbia's citizens, goes by without incidents," Dacic said in Belgrade.

A gay pride march in 2001 -- thought to be the country's first -- was attacked, resulting in some injuries.

Last year's march was canceled due to security concerns after a wave of anti-gay graffiti appeared before the event, news reports at the time said.

About 1,000 people participated in this year's march, guarded by close to 5,000 police officers, Vasiljevic said.

A number of streets were closed for the event, and international diplomats were scheduled to observe it, according to the interior ministry.

There's a law that bars federal employees from running for office? - CSMonitor.com

That’s right. Almost all civilian employees in the executive branch of the US government are covered by a 1939 law quaintly titled the Act to Prevent Pernicious Politics. This statute makes it illegal for bureaucrats to serve as political candidates, host political fundraisers, and even wear political buttons and T-shirts while on recognizable duty for Uncle Sam.

You might have heard this law referred to by its common name: the Hatch Act. Its main author was Sen. Carl Hatch of New Mexico, a reform-minded Democrat who was disturbed by the way a few federal New Deal jobs officials used their positions to influence votes and solicit campaign cash.

In 2007, it should be noted, the Vatican affirmed that Christ established only one Church and that this “one” Church subsists in the Catholic Church.

Holy See routinely ignored the UN’s edict that one sovereign state should not interfere with the internal affairs

Holy See (the identity assumed by the Vatican when it is engaged in diplomatic activities) routinely ignored the UN’s edict that one sovereign state should not interfere with the internal affairs of another.

One of the OSCE’s three main purposes is the protection of human rights, and Mr Pollock reminded the conference that the Vatican routinely shielded, and abetted the escape from justice of, child abuse criminals.

European Humanists put Holy See on the spot at human rights conference

The President of the European Humanist Federation (to which the NSS is affiliated) has launched a blistering attack on the “undiplomatic behaviour” of the Holy See at a conference of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

David Pollock told the OSCE — the world’s largest security organisation with 55 participating states and over a hundred NGOs — that the Holy See (the identity assumed by the Vatican when it is engaged in diplomatic activities) routinely ignored the UN’s edict that one sovereign state should not interfere with the internal affairs of another.

One of the OSCE’s three main purposes is the protection of human rights, and Mr Pollock reminded the conference that the Vatican routinely shielded, and abetted the escape from justice of, child abuse criminals. Read the full speech and accompanying paper.

Also present at the conference was Vera Pegna who spoke for the Italian Union of Atheists, Agnostics and Rationalists. She, too, was highly critical of the Vatican’s inordinate influence on Italian politics and its threats to the secular constitution of the country. She spoke of the pope’s attacks on “aggressive secularism” and said: “The Pope’s idea of ‘aggression’ is daring to argue for a different opinion from his.”

The representative of the Holy See, Mgr Anthony Frontiero, exercised his right of reply, in which he attacked those who were critical of the Holy See saying that it had a long history of diplomatic relations with other states and therefore no-one had the right to question its participation in the conference. He said that the Vatican was one of the most “ardent defenders” of human rights around the globe.

Msgr Frontiera then deflected EHF’s criticism by the usual tactic of making the Catholic Church into the victim, stating that any questioning of the Holy See’s activities was somehow an attack on the individual’s right to manifest their religion. He said it was secularists’ purpose to “expunge religion from society and cleanse the culture of any religious sentiment or belief whatsoever.”

Naturally, he made no reference to clerical child abuse or the interference by the Holy See in the legislative processes of other sovereign states.

David Pollock said: “We gave out over 50 copies of Geoffrey Robertson’s book, The Case of the Pope, to selected diplomats and NGOs and our side meeting on the Lautsi case (the Italian crucifix-in-Italian-schools case) was well attended.”

Evangelization is not a competition with other religions, pope says

By Carol Glatz

Posted: 10/8/2010
VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- As Catholics pursue their missionary duty, they must understand the church is not in competition with other religious groups or ideologies trying to win over believers but is working to make the Gospel accessible to everyone, Pope Benedict XVI said.

Evangelization is not an attack on religious freedom because it fully respects the freedom to believe and does not impose anything on another person's conscience, he said.

The pope made his remarks Oct. 4 as he met with bishops from the heart of Brazil's Amazon region, an area that covers about 770,000 square miles.

The pope noted the difficulty of evangelizing such vast and at times inaccessible areas.

"Sometimes we find this objection: to impose a truth, even if it is the truth of the Gospel, to impose a way, even if it's the way to salvation, can be nothing but an assault on religious liberty," the pope said.

To answer that objection, the pope quoted Pope Paul VI's 1974 apostolic exhortation on evangelization, "Evangelii Nuntianti," which stated:

"It would certainly be an error to impose something on the consciences of our brethren. But to propose to their consciences the truth of the Gospel and salvation in Jesus Christ, with complete clarity and with a total respect for the free options which it presents -- without coercion, or dishonorable or unworthy pressure -- far from being an attack on religious liberty is fully to respect that liberty."

As all baptized Catholics have the duty to pursue the church's missionary and evangelical activities, they must not develop a superficial concept of mission, Pope Benedict said.

Mission "cannot be limited to a simple search for new techniques and ways to make the church more attractive and capable of winning the competition" against other religious groups or relativistic ideologies, he said.

The church does not operate or work for itself, he said. The church is at the complete service of Christ and "exists so the good news may be made accessible to all people," he said.

Weakened missionary zeal is not the result of limitations or lack of resources; it is caused by neglecting the fact that mission must be nourished and strengthened with the Eucharist, he said.

If missionary activity is to be effective, it must begin and end with the Eucharist, he added.

Hope still remains for Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections - The Carolinian

Democrats should give up their plans for wealth redistribution and government spending. The fact is that Americans today are outraged about the state of the economy, and especially about government spending at all levels. While "hope" and "change" may have been big winners in 2008, with the president profiting politically by threatening to take money from those who have earned it and giving it to those who have not, these messages will not be big winners in 2010. Redistributionist policies have put the economy into worse shape than when Obama took office in January of 2009, with unemployment soaring, and small businesses continually closing their doors. Despite what the president says about the recession being "over," Americans are still facing financial uncertainty at home, and so these policies are just not politically palatable anymore.

Antidisestablishmentarianism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

is a political position that originated in 19th-century Britain in opposition to proposals for the disestablishment of the Church of England, that is, to remove the Anglican Church's status as the state church of England, Ireland and Wales. The word was used by William Gladstone in 1838 in his Church and State, though he changed his position with age, leading to the Irish Church Act 1869 under his administration.

The establishment was maintained in England, but in Ireland the Church of Ireland (Anglican) was disestablished in 1871. In Wales, four Church of England dioceses were disestablished in 1920, subsequently becoming the Church in Wales.

The term has largely fallen into disuse. The question of disestablishment of the Church of England is still current, often tied with the position of the English monarch as "Supreme Governor" of the Church (see Act of Settlement 1701), but there is no popular demand for disestablishment.
