He said: Early in my Jesuit training, if pressed, the most I would have been able to say about him was this: He renounced his father's wealth, founded the Franciscans, loved nature, sang songs, wrote some poems, and undoubtedly died a happy death. (Oh, and he lived in Assisi.)
But as much as I found him a charming figure, my understanding of the world's most popular saint was the rather sentimental one that is common today, as a sort of dopey but well-meaning hippy who talked to birds. As Lawrence S. Cunningham notes in Francis of Assisi: Performing the Gospel Life, such a view is "most completely summed up by the ubiquity of those concrete garden statues with a bird perched on the saint's shoulder found in everyone's garden center." In this conception, Francis was cheerful no doubt, but also a little bland. "Such an understanding is coterminous what I would call spirituality lite."

I think it played very, very well in his district. You could hardly go too far in villainizing BP down in New Orleans and southeastern Louisiana.
I don't think it was a calculated comment. He says it was not. He said it was born out of the frustration that he and everyone else in the area felt at the slow pace of the recovery in plugging the well.
But it served him well, I think. It put him where a politician needs to be in that part of the country, which was firmly on the side of, you know, the little guys against the big oil corporation.

Yesterday morning, I attended the Red Mass here in Washington along with five Supreme Court justices and Vice President Joe Biden. Okay, we weren’t in the same pew – they were in the front rows; I wasn’t.
But all of us heard Archbishop J. Augustine Di Noia, an American who now works at the Vatican, give a homily that instructed those in attendance on how they should feel about same-sex marriage, abortion and the dire threat of “humanism.”
The fact that the mass goes on almost every year just as the high court is coming back in session is no coincidence.

A U.S. federal judge in Milwaukee will serve a summons to Pope Benedict XVI and two other Vatican officials for allegedly covering up the sexual abuse committed by Father Lawrence Murphy at St. John's School for the Deaf in Milwaukee.
The decision by Judge Rudolph T. Randa of U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin in Milwaukee is the first of its kind in seeking cooperation from the Vatican in a church abuse case, according to a statement from the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.
SNAP leader Arthur Budzinski, himself a victim of abuse at St. John's, said in a statement he hopes the "Pope himself, if required, will testify directly under oath concerning what he knew and what actions he did and did not take concerning Father Murphy's crimes against us as children."

Pa. man kills self by lying down in front of train
A Pennsylvania man killed himself Monday morning by lying down in front of an Amtrak train in Middle River, Baltimore County police said.
A police spokesman, Cpl. Michael Hill, said a conductor aboard an Amtrak regional train saw a man step out from behind a pillar about 9:30 a.m. and lie down on the tracks at the Route 43 overpass near the Martin State Airport MARC station. Hill said there was no opportunity for the train to stop before hitting the man, identified as 46-year-old Mark Young of the 400 block of Marion Road in York, Pa.
Barbara Petito, an Amtrak spokeswoman, said there were about 125 passengers aboard the northbound train, which was traveling from Washington to St. Albans, Vt. She said the train was delayed about two hours.
The fatality was the second on the Amtrak tracks in the Middle River area this year. In January, 14-year-old Anna Marie Stickel was killed in an accident while walking along the tracks on her way to school.
