Wikileaks release secret documents citing Bergoglio as Papabile since 2003
Secret documents of U.S. diplomacy leaked by Wikileaks mention the Argentine Jorge Mario Bergoglio, (aka Pope Francis), as the preferred choice the position since 2003. There are eight telegrams published by Wikileaks mentioning Bergoglio. In 2 of them, he is presented as the Vatican favorite to become pope.
Bergoglio was a runner-up to the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at the 2005 conclave that made Ratzinger pope. But he was not even mentioned in many media long lists of the likely papal candidates or “papabile” this time around.
The oldest telegram is dated July 2003 and cites the Argentine as "papabile". The document, written by the U.S. embassy in Tegucigalpa, which is the capital of Honduras, talks about discussions regarding the succession of John Paul II. According to the report, there were chances of a Hispanic being chosen to succeed him, given the growth of Catholicism in the region and the decline in Europe.
Do you see their strategy?
The correspondence speaks mainly about the chances of Honduran Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga to become the new pope. But it also cites Bergoglio and 4 other Latin American cardinals among the favorites (this includes:Brazilian Claudio Hummes, Mexico's Norberto Rivera Carrera and Colombian Dario Hoyos Catrillon and Alfonso Lopez Trujillo).
Another document that cites Bergoglio among
the favorites for pope was written by the U.S. embassy in the Vatican
on April 18, 2005 - which was the first day of the conclave to choose
the German Joseph Ratzinger as successor to John Paul II.
According to the telegram, it was not yet possible to know which of the
cardinals would be elected. It is then presented with a list of favorite
profiles, divided into "Italian", "other Europeans", "Latin American",
"African" and "Asian." For each name, a biography is given with date and
place of birth and positions held throughout their career in the
Catholic Church. In the Bergoglio profile, the following comment is
made: "He speaks Spanish, Italian and German. Bergoglio exemplifies the
virtues of the wise pastor that many voters value. Observers emphasize
his humility." And that the fact that belonging to the Jesuit Order could
"count against" Bergoglio, as some conservative members of the Catholic
Church had fears of the liberal thinking of the members of this group.
