Covering the Conclave
By: Hugh Hewitt
How are American newspapers and networks covering the Conclave? Poorly, if at all. Most of the stories are breathless horserace-style speculations about men they don't know. When American journalists venture into the issues facing the Roman Catholic Church they rightly mention the abuse scandals and then most stop, except for a few who go on about celibacy --which is not going to change no matter who emerges as the new pope. When you next spot an article talking about the slaughter of Christians in the world or the suppression of the Church in China, send me a link. The next pope has enormous issues to confront that most American journalists can't even begin to conceive of much less cover in depth.

60 Plus urges Virginia to keep tax hikes off the table
By: 60 Plus Association
The 60 Plus Association, which represents over 7 million senior citizens nationwide and almost 160,000 in Virginia, urges the Commonwealth’s legislature to keep all tax hikes off the legislative table. Seniors, families and other vulnerable Virginians are already being driven into poverty by spiraling prices and a weak economy. Taking an even larger chunk of money in the form of increased sales taxes, gasoline taxes, and fees will only make their struggle worse.

The Human Toll Behind Out-of-Wedlock Births
By: Michael Goodwin
The numbers are staggering. Out of 120,000 live births in New York City in 2010, more than 54,000 babies were born out of wedlock. The human toll behind the numbers is devastating. Children raised without two parents face much higher odds in every facet of life. It’s as if they are forced to swim with one hand tied behind their backs. Some succeed, most don’t. Now comes the good news. Mayor Bloomberg is trying to do something about this preventable tragedy.

It's "I Told You So" on ObamaCare
By: Jonah Goldberg
"What we've learned through the course of this program is that this is really not a sensible way for the healthcare system to be run." That was Gary Cohen, director of the Department of Health and Human Services' Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, talking. He was specifically responding to the apparently surprising need to halt enrollments in a program designed as a temporary bridge for people with preexisting conditions who couldn't wait until the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) fully kicks in next year. The program was allocated $5 billion, but some estimate it will take $40 billion to fund the effort.

Larger Spending Cuts Would Help the Economy
By: Michael Boskin
President Obama's most recent prescription for economic growth—more government stimulus spending, new social programs, higher taxes on upper-income earners, subsidies for some industries and increased regulation for all of them—is likely to have the same anemic results as in his first administration. Recall: The $825 billion stimulus program did little economic good at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars per job, even based on the administration's own inflated job estimates.

Sen. Paul Reaches Victory Through Filibuster

White House issues answer after Senator’s 13-hour speech

Top 10 Quotes From Rand Pauls Amazing Filibuster on Civil Liberties

Mar 7, 2013
Today, following a historic 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor that ended early this morning, Sen. Rand Paul received correspondence from the White House regarding the legality and constitutionality of the U.S. government using lethal force, including drone strikes, on Americans and in U.S. territory.  Sen. Paul's repeated correspondence to President Obama's nominee to be CIA director, John Brennan, was finally answered today, in part, with the following response from Attorney General Eric Holder: "'Does the President have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?' The answer to that question is no."

"This is a major victory for American civil liberties and ensures the protection of our basic Constitutional rights. We have Separation of Powers to protect our rights. That's what government was organized to do and that's what the Constitution was put in place to do," Sen. Paul said. "I would like to congratulate my fellow colleagues in both the House and Senate and thank them for joining me in protecting the rights of due process."
