Sex abuse victims tell Catholic Church: Stop pretending the worst is over

Clergy sex abuse victims listed a “dirty dozen” potential papal candidates Wednesday and urged the Roman Catholic Church to “get serious” about protecting children, helping victims and exposing corruption.

“We want to urge Catholic prelates to stop pretending that the worst is over regarding the clergy sex abuse and cover up crisis,” said David Clohessy, director of the US-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP.

“Tragically, the worst is almost certainly ahead,” he said, adding that the truth of “widespread, longstanding and deeply-rooted” abuse and coverups has “yet to surface in most nations.”

The organization cited a dozen cardinals from the United States, Mexico, Honduras, Italy, Australia, Czech Republic, Canada, Argentina and Ghana accused of protecting pedophile priests and making offensive public statements.

They are all considered to be contenders to succeed Pope Benedict XVI, who was criticized for his handling of the sex abuse scandals that have rocked the church in the United States and Europe.

SNAP also opposes electing any member of the Roman Curia, the administrative branch of the Holy See.

“We feel no current Vatican ‘insider’ has the will to truly ‘clean house’ in the Vatican and elsewhere,’” Clohessy said in a statement.

“Promoting a Curia member would discourage victims, witnesses, whistleblowers and advocates from reporting wrongdoing.”

Public denunciations of the media for attacking the church and assertions that claims of widespread abuse were overstated were often cited among reasons to blacklist a papal candidate.

Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana made the list for claiming there were few child molesting clerics in Africa because they didn’t tolerate gay people there.

Cardinal Dominik Duka of Czech Republic was cited for claiming that only 10 percent of accusations against priests are proven.

Efforts to maintain secrecy rather than report abuse to law enforcement also led to condemnation.
Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico made the list for claiming there are no “documented” cases of abuse against minors in Mexico and allegedly concealing multiple child sex abuse allegations.

Cardinal Tarsicio Bertone of Italy was cited for saying “if a priest cannot confide in his bishop for fear of being denounced it would mean there is no more liberty of conscience” and blaming the child sex abuse epidemic on the “homosexual infiltration” of the clergy.

Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras was blacklisted for opposing the reporting of clerical sexual abuse to civil authorities and for saying the US media was bent on “persecution of the church.”

Three US bishops made the list for failing to protect parishioners from known abusers and undermining reform efforts: Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington and Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston.

Cardinal Leonardo Sandri of Argentina was dismissed as a “consummate Vatican insider” who publicly supported a notorious Mexican abuser, Father Marcial Maciel.

Cardinal Angelo Scola of Italy was blacklisted for minimizing church wrongdoings and calling coverage of Benedict’s role in the crisis an “iniquitous humiliation.”

Cardinal George Pell of Australia was cited for claiming the church was a victim of “smears,” insisting that there are no cover ups and for trying to seal a potentially damming court file.

Cardinal Marc Ouellet, of Quebec, Canada was cited for refusing to meet with sex abuse victims and brokering a deal which SNAP said let “wrongdoers determine their own punishment.”

Milwaukee sheriff blasts ‘rude’ testimony of pro-gun control police chief

The Milwaukee County sheriff has penned a letter to Sen. Lindsey Graham apologizing for the “rude” testimony in support of gun control delivered by the Milwaukee police chief last week.

Sheriff David Clarke Jr. wrote in the letter that he wanted to apologize, on behalf of his constituents, for the “embarrassing behavior” of Police Chief Edward Flynn.

“Please do not see his arrogance as exemplary of the people in Milwaukee County. His views on gun control are his and he is entitled to them, but he has no constituency of his own,” Clarke wrote.

He was referring to a Capitol Hill hearing last week in which Flynn testified in support of an assault weapons ban, saying most innocent people do not use such weapons to defend themselves.

Clarke accused Flynn of being a “mouthpiece” for a prominent national gun control group, but said he was particularly disappointed by a tense exchange between Graham and Flynn at the hearing.

“I watched in utter disbelief as (Flynn) talked over you and interrupted you,” Clarke wrote to the South Carolina Republican senator.

Clarke and Flynn have a history of animosity in Milwaukee, as they diverge sharply on the issue of gun rights and gun control. Clarke made headlines after he released a public service announcement urging residents to use guns to defend themselves.

Flynn, in response to Clarke’s letter, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he did not want to get “into a feud with a politician trying to raise funds for his next campaign. While David A. Clarke Jr. is certainly entertaining on these important topics he hasn't proven relevant to a serious discussion of the issues.”

White House Silent on Paul Filibuster

By DANIEL HALPER

The White House will not comment on Rand Paul's ongoing filibuster on the Senate floor of President Obama's nominee to be the next CIA director. A Huffington Post reporter remarks on Twitter:

WH declining comment on Rand Paul filibuster.

Likewise, the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from this reporter.

Tonight, President Obama took a group of Republican senators to dinner at the Jefferson Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C. Obama, the White House says, picked up the tab.

The guest's at Obama's dinner included:
Senator Lindsey Graham
Senator Bob Corker
Senator Kelly Ayotte
Senator John McCain
Senator Dan Coats
Senator Tom Coburn
Senator Richard Burr
Senator Mike Johanns
Senator Pat Toomey
Senator Ron Johnson
Senator John Hoeven
Senator Saxby Chambliss
An anonymous White House aide told the pooler, “The President greatly enjoyed the dinner and had a good exchange of ideas with the Senators.”

John O. Brennan – Obama’s 'Angel of Death' for the CIA

Yet another Roman Catholic! Wall to Wall!

'Brennan, the son of Irish immigrants from Roscommon, Ireland, was raised in North Bergen, New Jersey. He attended the Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School, and graduated from Saint Joseph of the Palisades High School in West New York, New Jersey.'

President Obama’s second term does not raise as many hopes as the first one did. This is especially true in the sphere of foreign policy, where expectations of a more pacifist approach to world affairs were largely dashed not only by Obama’s foreign policy moves during his first term, but also by his personnel choices. One of the most controversial ones was his recent decision to nominate John Owen Brennan as the new Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Mr. Brennan in his capacity of the president’s chief advisor on terrorism issues, is considered to be the brain behind the drone attacks. Those same drone attacks that allegedly killed thousands of people in the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Bruce Fein, a former adviser to Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul and an expert on constitutional law, considers Brennan’s nomination symbolic – in the worst sense of the term.

“Brennan’s nomination indicates that Obama’s second term won’t feature any substantial change in his foreign policy approach, which is an approach of an empire, may be an “Empire-Light” this time.

Brennan epitomizes the arrogance of the United States which believes that it is uniquely endowed with an authority to send predator drones to assassinate anyone that the president in secret decides is a danger to the country,” Bruce Fein said.

Ironically, Brennan’s candidacy is being opposed by Republicans in the Senate, with the hawks attacking a hawk, so to speak. Experts believe, however, that the Republicans’ critique of Brennan is mostly due to their political rivalry with Obama, and not to their disapproval of Brennan’s methods.

By the way, Brennan positions himself as a non-party figure, claiming that his program of destroying terrorists at a distance should have bipartisan moral support. Peter Lavelle, a political commentator with the RT television station, sees a sort of jealousy behind the Republicans’ non-acceptance of Brennan’s candidacy.

“It is very interesting that Republicans don’t like him because he is not “from them,” he is not a member of their group. I think it is almost perverse in a way. Here is an angel of death, Brennan, but he is not their angel of death,” Lavelle said.

The problem with Brennan’s drone program is that unpiloted killing planes, now much too familiar to the inhabitants of Yemen, Pakistan and Afghanistan, often destroy not only the terrorists, but also their relatives, friends and often just innocent bystanders. This kind of the so called collateral damage fuels anti-American sentiment in the Middle East, obviously putting new jihadists in the place of the destroyed ones. The possibility of becoming the next aim of a soulless and invisible killing machine does irreparable damage to America’s image in the targeted countries. However, Brennan defended the drone program saying that there is no reliable sociological research that would establish a link between anti-Americanism and the use of drones. Obama sided with his adviser, and The New York Times even reported Obama’s fascination with the concept of “divine war” developed by the early Christian thinker Thomas of Aquines. Obviously, the influence of Brennan, a Catholic by his Irish background and religious education, is at play here. But RT’s Peter Lavelle is not sure this kind of anti-terrorist fundamentalism can make up for a virtual absence of debate on the issue in the United States.

Peter Lavelle: “The window of debate is closing very, very quickly. And this is how American domestic policy will be played out on the domestic agenda – without a real debate. Because there is no foreign policy debate – I have been saying that for a long time time – but now it is becoming evident to many people. And Barak Obama remarkably, ironically enough, remarkably embodies that.”

Even if Brennan’s candidacy is not approved by the Senate, the mere fact of him becoming Obama’s initial choice of the CIA director does not bode well for pacifist forces in American society. The presidency of George Bush the junior acquired a bad symbol in the Guantanamo prison and secret CIA prisons in other countries. For Barak Obama, drone killings may become an even worse symbol.

C4L: Senator Rand Paul is leading a historic filibuster on the U.S. Senate floor

Campaign for Liberty

As I write you, Senator Rand Paul is leading a historic filibuster on the U.S. Senate floor.

http://www.c-span.org/Live-Video/C-SPAN2/

He's protesting the Obama administration's outrageous claim it can use drones to kill American citizens on American soil without any due process or oversight!

Won't you please sign your Stand With Rand petition to the U.S. Senate IMMEDIATELY?

Time and again Senator Paul has called for reinforcements. Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Jerry Moran (R-KS) have come to the floor in support.

But eleven establishment Republican United States Senators couldn't be there to support Rand Paul's filibuster. They're having dinner with President Obama.

According to news reports today, President Obama want to schmooze them into supporting new radical tax-and-spending schemes.

Apparently growing government is more important to these eleven Republicans than standing up for our remaining constitutional liberties - like ensuring our government can't assassinate our own citizens on American soil.

For some, like Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC), this is no surprise.

During the fight over the NDAA - which included a provision saying American citizens could be thrown in prison for life without trial - Senator Graham stated "Shut up. You don't get a lawyer."

Now, you and I see clearly where this type of thinking leads.

An American president is claiming the authority to kill American citizens on American soil without so much as a trial!

And GOP Senators fritter away an evening with President Obama.

The only good excuse for going to dinner with President Obama tonight instead of supporting Rand's filibuster is if they come back with a signed document saying the President has disavowed the killing of any American citizen without trial.

Instead you and I can guarantee they're trying to come up with yet another "deal" to spend even more of our tax dollars.

The establishment's days are numbered.

And as the years progress, they'll be remembered for nothing but their betrayal of those of us who support liberty and limited government.

There's a R3VOLUTION going on.

And it will not end until free markets, sound money, individual liberty, and constitutional principles are restored in America.

It's up to you and me to hasten that day.

Please sign your Stand With Rand petition IMMEDIATELY.

And if you can, please contribute just $10 or $20 to Campaign for Liberty TODAY.

In Liberty,

John Tate
President

P.S. While Senator Paul asks for reinforcements, eleven establishment Republican United States Senators went todinner with President Obama.

This is an outrage. Please help me turn up the heat on the U.s. Senate.

Please sign your Stand With Rand petition IMMEDIATELY.

And if you can, please contribute just $10 or $20 to Campaign for Liberty TODAY.
