Congressional
Democrats and the White House could gain some leverage in their push to
extend federal unemployment benefits amid a failed attempt by
Republicans to pass a separate tax plan. Advocates argue that their

That's what Tagg Romney, Mitt's oldest son, told the Boston Globe for its big post-mortem on his father's failed presidential bid published on Sunday.
“He wanted to be president less
than anyone I’ve met in my life," Tagg Romney told the paper. "He had no
desire to ... run. If he could have found someone else to take his
place ... he would have been ecstatic to step aside.
"He is a very private person who
loves his family deeply and wants to be with them," Tagg continued. "He
has deep faith in God and he loves his country, but he doesn’t love the
attention.”
Romney's reluctance to become
commander in chief has been hinted at by his sons before. Before their
father sought the 2012 GOP nomination, several said they tried to
convince him not to run.
"I tried to convince him not to," Matt Romney told Conan O'Brien in June.
"I think there were a few of us that tried that. I just felt for us as a
family, this isn't the best thing. But ... for the country, we think
it's the right thing."
"Ironic U.S. gun rights campaign to deport me for 'attacking 2nd
Amendment rights' - is my opinion not protected under 1st Amendment
rights?" he tweeted.
The petition, created on Friday, cites his relentless attacks on the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
"British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a
hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second
Amendment," the petition reads. "We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported
immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for
exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage
attacks against the rights of American citizens."
The petition was started by "Kurt N" of Austin, Tex. and already has
over 8,900 signatures. A threshold of 25,000 signatures is required for
White House action. The Blaze identified the petition creator as possibly being "Kurt Nimmo of the website infowars.com."
Morgan, who is a British citizen,
has repeatedly attacked the NRA and members of the gun lobby since the
tragic Newtown school shootings. In a recent exchange, he berated an
advocate of gun rights as "stupid."
Twitchy, a web site that dubbed the CNN talk show host "Musket
Morgan," said the anti-Second Amendment pundit is "beside himself over
this assault on his First Amendment rights."
On Friday, Morgan called the NRA agenda "murderous" and appeared to encourage violence against the pro-Second Amendment group.
“This is your moment, America: The #NRA has 4 million members, your
population is 311 million. Don’t stand for this murderous c**p any
more,” he tweeted.
Brother Paul L. Gauvin removed from current position at Connecticut parish
PORTLAND, Maine —An
investigation by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland has
substantiated an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor brought against a
Catholic brother who served at an Aroostook County parish in the early
1970s.
In a
statement issued Saturday morning, the diocese said evidence was found
to back up a claim by a Maine man who said Brother Paul L. Gauvin , now
73, sexually abused him in the early 1970s when he was an altar server
at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Madawaska. Gauvin was the director of
religious education at the parish at the time, according to Dave Guthro,
a spokesman for the diocese.
Guthro
said the man contacted officials at Sacred Heart Parish in Bloomfield,
CT earlier this year and told them that Gauvin, the parish's director of
liturgy, had molested him over a two year period when the man was 11
and 12 years old.
Before
his assignment at St. Thomas Aquinas, Gauvin worked as an English
teacher at Madawaska High School. The high school employed Brothers of
the Sacred Heart as teachers at the time, according to Guthro. The
religious order left Maine in 1994, he said.
Guthro
said Gauvin was removed from his position at the Connecticut parish
immediately after the allegations were brought forth. The Brothers of
the Sacred Heart have been notified of the investigations findings and
are dealing with the matter with Gauvin, Guthro said. Gauvin is now
being supervised by a religious superior from the order and will have no
contact with minors, he said.
Guthro said the diocese has offered counseling, spiritual support and other social services to the victim.
Bishop
Richard Malone urges anyone who might have additional information about
this or any other case of sexual abuse to contact law enforcement and
Deacon John Brennan, director of the Office of Professional
Responsibility for the diocese at 321-7836.
