| Call it the tale of two elections.
Since Barack Obama won his reelection campaign, his administration seems to be signaling a willingness to engage in talks with Iran and to reduce sanctions in exchange for concessions -- all to avoid the military option. Ron Paul was among the top write-in vote-getters on Nov. 6
Jesus, Jon Stewart, Stephen King and your mom: The write-in vote story in York County
By SCOTT BLANCHARD
Daily Record/Sunday News
York, PA -
Search the database to see who got write-in votes
A couple of Congressmen who weren't on the November ballot polled pretty
well in York County, a tally of write-in votes revealed.
Retiring U.S. Rep. Todd Platts, R-York County, got 315 write-in votes
for offices ranging from president to several state house of
representative seats. He received 288 votes to keep his seat in
Congress.
Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who tried to earn the Republican nomination for
president, got 403 of the 773 write-in votes cast for president in York
County. Virgil Good, a Constitution party candidate, got 46, and U.S.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's name was written in 31 times.
In all, spreadsheets released by the county's voter registration office
show York County residents cast 3,186 write-in votes. There weren't
enough write-in votes in any single race to affect the outcome on Nov.
6.
Some challengers in the April primary showed they still have some
support. For example, Dan Bradley, who lost to 196th district state Rep.
Seth Grove, R-Dover Township, received 27 votes. Kelly Henshaw, who
lost to 94th district state Rep. Stan Saylor, got 54 votes. (Note: the
totals include the most liberal -- not in a political sense -- reading
of the voter's intent).
As usual, the write-in votes reveal voters' anger, frustration, sense of humor and nostalgia. Here's a look:
Comedy is better than political rhetoric
The comedy duo of Jon Stewart and Lewis Black got a vote for president.
Wonder if they knew they were a ticket? Archie Bunker, Stephen Colbert,
Mickey Mouse, Daffy Duck, Donald Duck and Ellen Degeneres got votes for
various offices. And someone from Jackson Township wrote in Finn the
Human and Jake the Dog from the Cartoon Network show "Adventure Time."
Keeping the faith
Jesus received 34 votes for offices from president to congressman to
93rd state representative. God checked in at 24 for a similar range of
jobs. One person wishes the Holy Spirit could be one of Pennsylvania's
U.S. senators.
Why is it so hot, and scary, in this voting booth?
Satan received six votes, all but one from a precinct in Dallastown.
(It's probably just coincidence that Stephen King, master horror
novelist, and York County resident and horror novelist Brian Keene got
votes here, too.)
I liked it better when this guy was in office
George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, Theodore Roosevelt and Harry S Truman received votes.
I'm actually not sure who's in office or on the ballot
Some people wrote in the names Barack Obama and Mitt Romney for president.
The world would be better if it were run by animals
"Ginger, my cat" got a vote for U.S. Senator. Amber the Dog and Samson
My Dead Dog each received a vote to be state representative in the 196th
district. Samson also was a write-in choice for state senator from the
31st district.
Family matters
Did you realize that either "You" or "Your Mom" could have been a U.S.
Senator from Pennsylvania if only you had gotten many thousands more
votes than the one each you received in York County?
Um, I don't really understand this voting thing
Someone in North Codorus Township reported that they were "Happy to
vote," as opposed to actually voting for a candidate in the 196th state
house district.
The phrase "Vote for Obama" appealed to someone in Windsor Township so
much that they wanted it to be the state representative for the 94th
district.
