Victims of shootings were family men

At an afternoon press conference, Sheriff Mike Tregre, flanked by law enforcement officials from the State Police, identified the officers injured and killed in the early morning shooting. Two deputies were killed after they were gunned down at a trailer park, and two deputies were injured in a shooting outside of a Valero plant.

Tregre said the deceased officers are Deputy Brandon Nielsen, 34, with 1.8 years on the force. He is survived by his wife and five children. And Deputy Jeremy Triche, 27, with four years on the force.  Triche worked in the K-9 division of the sheriff's office. He survived by his wife and two-year-old son.

Tregre described the incident that left Nielsen and Triche dead as an "ambush."  Neilsen and Triche were fatally shot at the trailer park after following up on a tip from the initial shooting of two other deputies who survived the shootings.

"Jeremy Triche was a graduate of St. Charles Catholic High School in 2002. I remember him as both a hard-working student and athlete. He excelled here both on and off the field. He will be dearly missed by the many lives he touched. Our prayers are with his family and all of the victims of today's tragedy," said Andrew Cupit, the principal for St. Charles Catholic.

Two other officers injured were Deputy Michael Boyington, 33, said Tregre. He worked for the sheriff's office for three years, recently as an investigator for the district attorney.  Deputy Jason Triche, 30, is a ten-year veteran of the force, recently in the uniform division.

Boyington was taken to University Hospital in New Orleans, and Triche was taken to River Parishes Hospital. Both underwent surgery and are expected to survive.

Boyington and Triche were shot while working a traffic detail at Highway 3217 in the Valero parking lot. The remote parking lot is located in St. John Parish, while the actual plant is located in St. Charles Parish. Tregre said Jason Triche and Jeremy Triche were related, but he didn't elaborate.
