The Obama campaign apparently didn't look
backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, "Forward"
— a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism.
Many
Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and
20th centuries had the name "Forward!" or its foreign cognates.
Wikipedia has an entire section called "Forward (generic name of
socialist publications)."
"The name Forward carries a special
meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used
as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and
publications," the online encyclopedia explains.
The slogan
"Forward!" reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals
that their movements reflected the march of history, which would move
forward past capitalism and into socialism and communism.
The
Obama campaign released its new campaign slogan Monday in a 7-minute
video. The title card has simply the word "Forward" with the "O" having
the familiar Obama logo from 2008. It will be played at rallies this
weekend that mark the Obama re-election campaign's official beginning.
There
have been at least two radical-left publications named "Vorwaerts" (the
German word for "Forward"). One was the daily newspaper of the Social
Democratic Party of Germany whose writers included Friedrich Engels and
Leon Trotsky. It still publishes as the organ of Germany's SDP, though
that party has changed considerably since World War II. Another was the
1844 biweekly reader of the Communist League. Karl Marx, Engels and
Mikhail Bakunin are among the names associated with that publication.
East Germany named its Army soccer club ASK Vorwaerts Berlin (later FC Vorwaerts Frankfort).
Vladimir
Lenin founded the publication "Vpered" (the Russian word for "forward")
in 1905. Soviet propaganda film-maker Dziga Vertov made a documentary
whose title is sometimes translated as "Forward, Soviet" (though also
and more literally as "Stride, Soviet").
Conservative critics of
the Obama administration have noted numerous ties to radicalism and
socialists throughout Mr. Obama's history, from his first political
campaign being launched from the living room of two former Weather
Underground members, to appointing as green jobs czar Van Jones, a
self-described communist.

Romney's Former Lt. Governor Loses Delegate Bid In Massachusetts
Ron Paul supporters flooded the state convention.
McKay Coppins
Mitt Romney's former Lieutenant Governor, Kerry Healey, lost her delegate bid to a Ron Paul supporter at the Massachusetts Republican convention Saturday, an alarming sign about Romney's organization in his old home state.
With the nomination in hand, Romney had put together a slate of Mass. delegates to represent him at the Republican National Convention in Tampa — but a surge of libertarian activists at the convention resulted in the defeat of many of Romney's picks.
More than half of the 27 delegate slots went to Paul supporters, the Globe reports. One of the casualties was Healey, who remains a top Romney supporter.
The defeat is symbolic: Under state rules, all delegates will still be bound to vote for Romney at the national convention, which Romney won handily last month. But the Massachusetts delegates will have the opportunity to make mischief with votes on the party platform and to elect a chairman — a suggestion that Paul could play an outsized role at the convention this spring.
BuzzFeed's phone calls to the Romney and Paul campaigns went unreturned.
SURPRISE! Ron Paul Destroyed Mitt Romney In Massachusetts This Weekend

Paul's wins aren't likely to effect on Romney's all-but-certain coronation as the Republican nominee. Romney won the Massachusetts Republican primary with 72% of the vote, so 38 of the state's 41 RNC delegates are legally bound to vote for their former governor on the first ballot at the convention.
But the losses are an alarming indication that Romney's campaign organization is still woefully underdeveloped, even in the state where he served as governor, and where his campaign headquarters are located. Romney had a full slate of 27 delegates for Saturday's caucuses, and the losers included prominent Bay State Republicans, such as the Massachusetts House Minority Leader Bradley Jones, Jr., and former Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey, according to the Globe.
The Paul and Romney campaigns did not reply to Business Insider's requests for comment.
Massachusetts wasn't the only state where Paul notched delegate victories this weekend. The campaign announced Sunday that Paul supporters will make up 74% of the delegates at the Louisiana GOP convention, putting Paul in prime position to pick up a sizable chunk of the state's national convention delegates. Paul supporters also reportedly made inroads at Alaska's GOP convention, overcoming staunch opposition from the state party Establishment.
Even Paul's campaign advisors admit that, despite the success of their convention strategy, it would be virtually impossible to deny Romney the 1,144-delegate majority he needs to win the nomination on the first ballot. But delegates also vote on the convention chair, the vice president, and the party platform, and Romney could have a hard time controlling those votes if the delegate team he brings to the convention is loyal to another coach.
