1ST AMENDMENT UNDER FIRE

Is library association's 'Banned Book Week' really 'gay' promotion?

Critic calls event a 'hoax perpetrated on the American public since 1982'

By Dave Tombers

The First Amendment that assures Americans free speech has been hijacked for a political agenda that promotes homosexuality and other sexual alternatives to children through the nation's libraries, contends an advocate for safe and secure reading institutions.

The American Library Association this week is conducting its annual promotion of a "gay"-friendly agenda to school children across the nation through its highly publicized "Banned Book Week."

Dan Kleinman of SafeLibraries.org told WND he believes the ALA's list of books "is intentionally and deceptively false and is being used to promote a political agenda."

Linda Harvey of MissionAmerica.org, who monitors homosexual activism aimed at the youth culture, has called "Banned Book Week" a "smokescreen of hypocrisy."

"It's that special time each year when some in the library profession point an accusing finger at parents, especially Christians or conservatives, who might dare to question the value or appropriateness of certain materials available to youth," she has concluded.

Harvey said the ALA "has become a megaphone for leftist values and a disinformation tool to prevent traditional values from getting much shelf space in libraries."

Each September the ALA highlights a list of 10 books that it claims were the most "challenged" books the previous year. Along with "Banned Book Week," the ALA also has declared Sept. 28 as "Banned Website Awareness Day," voicing opposition to any restriction on Web content for children.

Kleinman said the ALA contention that there are many attempts by censor-mongers to restrict children's access to its favorite tomes is not entirely accurate.

He said he contacted Bryan Campbell of the ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom to find out just how many complaints the top 10 "challenged" books receive.

Kleinman said that Campbell was very forthcoming and told him that the No. 1 book on the Top 10 banned book list only received four complaints nationwide in all of 2010.

"The ALA site says, 'There have been dozens of attempts to remove 'And Tango Makes Three' from school and public library shelves,' That is false. The actual number is, are you sitting down, four," Kleinman said.

The ALA declined to respond to WND requests for comment.

"And Tango Makes Three" has been on the ALA's top banned books list for several years. The most recent published on the ALA website is the 2010 list. According to the ALA it "is an award-winning children's book about the true story of two male Emperor Penguins hatching and parenting a baby chick at New York's Central Park Zoo."

But Harvey has pointed out the failings of the book, which is used by homosexuals to endorse the idea that homosexuality is throughout "nature."

She has written that the book is supposed to teach "the valuable lesson that if two male penguins in Central Park Zoo can pair up and adopt a baby penguin, same-sex coupling must be OK for humans, too. Only problem is that the real penguin duo inspiring this story has split. 'Silo' ... discovered his male attraction to a female penguin, blasting the interspecies analogy to bits. Yet the misleading book remains."

A Washington Times columnist also has joined the team of critics over the apparent deception.

Robert Knight wrote that the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the ALA is counting on school districts' budget problems to keep them from fighting threatened lawsuits regarding students' access to pornography.

What if Barack Obama had begun his presidency by enacting a permanent tax-cut bill that further lowered income tax rates, cut the capital gains rate in half and reduced business taxes across the board?

Instead of a $1 trillion spending stimulus that enlarged government and created few jobs, and the other wasteful initiatives he tried and has since proposed that have cost or will cost our economy several trillion dollars, what if he had put that into pro-growth tax cuts to end what has turned into a monster four-year recession with no end in sight?

If he had, the Great Recession would be behind us, the economy would be growing at a brisk clip, unemployment would be declining, federal revenues would be rising, and the deficit would be shrinking by now.

That’s what happened with the Kennedy tax cuts in the 1960s, when that decade ended with a budget surplus, and in the 1980s with the Reagan tax cuts, which ended a severe recession in two years, created millions of new jobs and resulted in surging quarterly growth rates that Mr. Obama can only dream about.

Former President Clinton doesn’t mention it now, but the economy took off in his second term after he signed a capital gains tax cut that unlocked investment capital and led to an explosion of jobs in the high-tech sector and a budget surplus.

But Mr. Obama came into office with the twisted belief that George W. Bush’s tax cuts had worsened if not actually caused the economic catastrophe he inherited. To a large extent, he turned half the voters against tax cuts.

However, the recession triggered by the subprime mortgage debacle was not caused by Mr. Bush’s tax cuts, which carried the economy through some major body blows, including the 2001 dot-com recession, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a series of scandals on Wall Street and Hurricane Katrina.

By 2007, the year before the 2008 recession, federal receipts had risen by more than $800 billion, the national jobless rate had fallen to a low 4.6 percent, and the budget deficit was a modest $161 billion.

That fiscal record was virtually erased from the nation’s public memory by the fierce recession that followed and by Mr. Obama’s false charges that the Bush tax cuts had gotten us into this mess. That’s right, the very same tax cuts that Mr. Obama agreed to extend for two years to give the economy time to recover.

But Mr. Obama’s advisers underestimated the severity of the recession and the need for stronger medicine. Capital investment was on strike; banks toughened lending rules, which made loans harder to get; and businesses large and small were struggling or going under.

In a $14 trillion economy, the 1930s-era idea pushed by Mr. Obama that we could spend our way out of the recession with $800 billion for “shovel-ready” jobs was preposterous on its face. It takes too long to get money into the contracting pipeline, and once it’s spent, the jobs end. That, of course, is what happened.

It’s generally believed that Mr. Obama and the Democrats have poisoned the well on income tax rate cuts despite that policy’s record of success, and many polls support raising taxes on businesses and the richest Americans, just as Mr. Obama proposes to do with his $1.5 trillion plan.

However, other polls suggest the American people are more closely divided on this issue than previously has been reported. When the Gallup Poll asked Americans this summer, “Do you think our government should or should not redistribute wealth by heavy taxes on the rich?” 49 percent answered “No, should not” and 47 percent said “Yes, should.”

“Seven in 10 Americans believe the government should levy taxes on the rich to redistribute wealth, while an equal proportion of Republicans believe it should not,” Gallup said. “The slight majority of independents [who decide most elections] oppose this policy.”

The bottom line: “While a solid majority of Americans, 57 percent, believe money and wealth in the U.S. should be more evenly distributed among the people, fewer than half favor using the federal tax code to do so,” Gallup said.

Redistributing income is at the heart of what Mr. Obama has proposed in his plan to raise taxes on upper-income people - from owners of small family businesses that earn more than $200,000 a year to seniors who live off capital gains and dividends from their retirement funds.

But a tax-hike policy that proposes to divide the nation’s shrinking economic pie into small slices to redistribute it among our body politic is not a prescription for growth. It’s a recipe for economic decline, fewer employers and jobs, less investment and increased poverty.

The Federal Reserve’s ominous statement Wednesday forecast “significant downside risks” ahead for our nation’s economy in the coming months. No one expects things to improve this year or even next under this administration’s impotent tax-and-spend policies.

“The economy is imploding thanks to incompetence in Washington,” says University of Maryland economist Peter Morici, who warns that the economy right now is dancing “along the precipice of a second recession.”

“President Obama is hardly the victim of his predecessors’ mistakes as much as his own decisions,” Mr. Morici says an analysis of the economy’s rapid descent.

We need a policy that deregulates the economy to free it from Mr. Obama’s rigid central planning, that will drill for oil to halt the currency drain to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and that will lift the tax burden that is pulling our country ever deeper into an economic abyss.

2 Tibetan monks burn themselves amid Dalai Lama feud

Two Tibetan monks set themselves on fire Monday in a protest over China's tight rein over Buddhist practices, a rights group said as the Chinese government reiterated it will choose the next Dalai Lama.

The London-based Free Tibet campaign said Lobsang Kalsang and Lobsang Konchok, both believed to be 18 or 19 years old, self-immolated Monday at the Kirti Monastery in Sichuan province's Aba prefectuture.

The monks allegedly called for religious freedom and said "long live the Dalai Lama" before they set themselves on fire, Free Tibet said in an emailed statement.

The official Xinhua News Agency said in a brief report that did not identify the monks by name that both were rescued by police, suffered slight burns and were in stable condition.

Lobsang Kelsang is the brother of Rigzin Phuntsog, a 21-year-old Kirti monk who died March 16 after setting himself on fire, said Free Tibet. Phuntsog's death was seen as a protest against China's heavy-handed controls on Tibetan Buddhism and provoked a standoff between security forces and monks.

A man who answered the phone Monday at the Kirti Monastery's Administration Committee said he was not aware of any reports of monks setting themselves alight. He refused to give his name.

Calls to the county and prefecture-level Public Security Bureau in Aba both rang unanswered Monday.

Aba has been the scene of numerous protests over the past several years against the Chinese government. Most are led by monks who are fiercely loyal to Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled the Himalayan region in 1959 amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule and is reviled by Beijing.

Also on Monday, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said that it has never been up to the Dalai Lama to pick his own successor and that Beijing will identify who is the next incarnation of the Tibetan spiritual leader.

China reviles the Dalai Lama as a separatist and wants to pick a pro-Beijing successor. The Dalai Lama insists he is only seeking increased autonomy for Tibet, not independence, and opposes Beijing's involvement in selecting its leaders.

On Saturday, the 76-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate said that if he is to be reincarnated he will leave clear written instructions about the process. He said in a statement that when he is "about 90" he will consult Buddhist scholars to evaluate whether the institution of the Dalai Lama should continue at all.

But Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily news conference that Dalai Lamas have never decided on their own successors.

"I would like to point out the title of the Dalai Lama is conferred by the central government and is otherwise illegal. The 14th Dalai Lama was approved by the then republican government," Hong said. "There has never been a practice of the Dalai Lama identifying his own successor."

China has said that religious law requires that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama be born in a Tibetan area under Chinese control. The Dalai Lama has said his successor could be born in exile and has even floated the idea of choosing his own successor while still alive — perhaps even a woman.

In his statement Saturday, he said if the institution of the Dalai Lama were to continue, then he would leave behind "clear written instructions about it."

"Bear in mind that, apart from the reincarnation recognized through such legitimate methods, no recognition or acceptance should be given to a candidate chosen for political ends by anyone, including those in the People's Republic of China," he said.

The Dalai Lama has lived in the Indian hill town of Dharmsala since fleeing Tibet. China says Tibet has always been part of its territory, but many Tibetans say the region was virtually independent for centuries.
