The head of a Catholic religious order in the Netherlands has confirmed one of his subordinate priests served on the board of an organization that promotes pedophilia.

The head of a Catholic religious order in the Netherlands has confirmed one of his subordinate priests served on the board of an organization that promotes pedophilia.
Herman Spronck, head of the Dutch arm of the Salesian order, said in a statement Friday the priest served on the board of the "Martijn" organization, which is widely reviled but not illegal.
"Of course we reject this and distance ourselves from this personal initiative" on the part of the priest, Spronck's statement said.
"Membership in such organizations does not fit with the ethos of the Salesian order."
However, RTL Nieuws, which broke the story, published interviews both with Spronck and the priest, identified as 73-year-old "Father Van B.," in which they defend some pedophile relationships.
"Society thinks these relationships are harmful. I disagree," RTL quoted Van B. as saying. He served on Martijn's board from 2008 until 2010, when the organization's founder was arrested for alleged possession of child pornography. That case is ongoing.
RTL quoted Spronck as saying that "formally I always say that everyone must obey the law. But these relationships do not necessarily have to be damaging."
Spronck and his organization could not be reached late Friday for comment.
Thousands of past cases of alleged sexual abuse by priests are under investigation by an independent - but Church-funded - commission in the Netherlands. It is headed by a former government minister, Wim Deetman.
The Dutch church, which has more than 4 million members, first set up a body to deal with abuse allegations in 1995. But the independent commission was formed last year after shocking abuse cases were uncovered here at the same time similar stories were snowballing in neighboring Germany.
Several of the first and most prominent abuse cases that have come to light in the Netherlands have also involved Salesian priests.

A Roman Catholic priest was sprayed with flammable liquid and then set on fire as he said mass at a Lithuanian church, the Herald Sun reports.
Father Remigijus Kuprys, 46, was able to put out the flames with the help of worshippers, but suffered facial burns, according to the paper.
Lithuanian authorities arrested a 42-year-old man for the attack.
''We have reports that he had repeatedly disrupted masses and shouted weird statements. Investigators are deciding on psychiatric tests,'' police officer Mindaugas Juknys told the paper.
The suspect did not resist arrest and could face up to ten years in prison.
No motive was given for the attack.
Kuprys has since been released from the hospital.

Harold Camping, the 89-year-old Christian evangelist from Oakland, Calif., whose Family Radio broadcasts are heard in 61 languages, doesn't just think that Judgment Day will come Saturday. He guarantees it.
"It is absolutely going to happen," said Camping, who has determined after five decades of studying Scripture that May 21 marks the beginning of the end. "We do not have a Plan B at all. There is no possibility that it will not happen, because all of our information comes from the Bible."
So if you haven't made amends with God, cancel your weekend plans, Camping says.
Forget about Phillies vs. Rangers at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday. Disregard the five-day forecast. And it doesn't matter whom you vote for in the next election. The candidates aren't going to make it to the general election in November.
No one will.
The earthquake that rocked Japan in March will be a mere seismic blip compared with the cataclysmic earthquake that will rumble across the planet on Saturday, reaching Philadelphia about 6 p.m., according to Camping and his legion of followers from here to China.

We know what you're thinking: Camping is a certified nut job. Preachers have been ranting about fire and brimstone for nearly two millennia. Anyone can stand on a street corner and predict that the end is nigh.
But this is different. Billboards have been erected around the globe. SEPTA buses are wrapped in Camping's prophecy. Soccer moms have turned their minivans into rolling advertisements. There are bumper stickers. T-shirts. Lawn signs.
"It's the greatest ad campaign in the world," said Robin Harp, 66, a former factory worker who drives a van covered with the Family Radio message. "God's coming to bring judgment, and this earthquake will be like no other earthquake. You want to warn those you love."
People believe Camping's biblical calculations. A lot of people. Normal people. Educated people.
Like Ralph Workman, 50, of Landenberg, Pa., an engineer at Boeing's Delaware County helicopter plant and a Family Radio caravan manager. He organizes a crew that spreads Camping's message in the hope of saving souls.
"People think we're a bunch of crazy coots, but we have a lot of educated people," said Workman, an even-keeled guy who's quick with a smile and patient with skeptics.
Workman runs down a list of sane believers, including a former commercial airline pilot, a medical doctor, a college professor and a mathematician.
"I'd be doing this full time if not for my wife," Workman said, with his sons, ages 10 and 12, by his side -- and on his side of the debate. "She doesn't believe it and doesn't want to hear about it, but we're absolutely certain.
"Yep," he said of his sons. "They both believe. I'm very proud of them."
Workman was among about 150 Judgment Day believers gathered in the basement of a Delaware County, Pa., union hall for the "last Sunday" meeting of the eBible Fellowship, one of the many groups that are promoting Family Radio's message.
You might expect the place to be full of brainwashed freaks like the Heaven's Gate cult, whose members strapped on brand-new Nike sneakers and committed mass suicide in 1997 so they could board a UFO.
Or maybe you'd find them speaking in tongues or handling snakes. Because, let's face it, history has shown that Doomsday prophets are often deranged and always wrong.
Instead, the union hall was full of diverse and rational people who happen to believe in something completely irrational. They sipped coffee and munched on Dunkin' Donuts. They just want to save you.
"People are very concerned about us," said Chris McCann, 49, of Darby Borough, Pa., who runs eBible Fellowship. "They're worried we're going to drink the Kool-Aid. They're worried there's going to be a mass suicide.
"However, when the vast majority of people in the world do not take heed, and they're not listening to God, what have they done to themselves when May 21 comes?" he asked the audience. "They've killed themselves."
McCann knows that much of the world is laughing at him. But he fully expects to laugh last as he's whisked away to Heaven while the sinners face God's wrath. "The concern is not, 'What are we going to do when it doesn't happen?'" he said. "It's 'What are you going to do when it does?'"

Don’t bother with the iris scanner or the fingerprinting machine. Leave the satellite-enabled locators and tell-tale scents back on the base, military manhunters. If an Air Force plan works out as planned, all you’ll need to track your prey is a single camera, snapping a few seconds of footage from far, far away.
Huntsville, Alabama’s Photon-X, Inc. recently received an Air Force contract to develop such a camera. With one snap, the company claims, its sensor can build a three-dimensional image of a person’s face: the cornerstone of a distinctive “bio-signature” that can be used to track that person anywhere. With a few frames more, the device can capture that face’s unique facial muscle motions, and turn those movements into a “behaviormetric” profile that’s even more accurate.
“The proposed work will help identify non-cooperative dismounts using remote sensors, from standoff distances that were previously impossible,” reports Toyon Research Corporation, which also got an Air Force grant for bio-signature development. “This identity information can help intelligence analysts connect specific people to events and locations, and learn about insurgent operations.”
But the combo won’t just help flesh-and-blood airmen keep tabs on their fellow humans, Photon-X adds. It “can help Humanoid Robots navigate and find objects in a cluttered room.”
And it could be used to monitor suspicious behavior practically anywhere. “A brief list of potential industries includes law enforcement, banking, private corporations, schools and universities, casinos, theme parks, retail, and hospitality.”
So the next time you’re at the Bellagio, and a real-life android walks up to you, calls you by name, and asks about what you thought was an extremely private evening — you can thank the Air Force and its tech-enabled manhunters for the experience.
