Catholic college in New Jersey provides “Hindu prayer space”

From ANI
Nevada (US), Apr 3: Saint Peter's College, only Roman Catholic Jesuit college of New Jersey (USA), is providing a "Hindu prayer space" on its campus.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a release today, has commended Saint Peter's College (SPC) and termed this gesture as a "step in the right direction".

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, has urged all universities, colleges and other educational institutions of USA and Canada to provide "Hindu prayer space" for its students.

Rajan Zed pointed out that there was urgent need of allocation of permanent Hindu prayer space complete with a small library of Hinduism books at campuses because of unique requirements of Hindu rituals and prayer traditions; including deities, burning incense and jyots, taking off shoes, sitting on floor while praying, etc. These should be available to students 24-hours a day and seven days a week to meet their spiritual needs.

Various other religious groups reportedly had designated prayer spaces in many campuses, and now almost every campus had considerable presence of Hindu students, Zed added.

SPC also offers an honors course in "Art and Hinduism" in which "students are encouraged to develop an appreciation of Hindu art" and it includes "mandatory" temple visits.

Dr. Eugene J. Cornacchia is president, while Mary Sue Callan-Farley is director of Campus Ministry at SPC, which was launched in 1872. It upholds the tradition of "care for the whole person" and offers over 40 undergraduate and pre-professional programs besides master's and doctorate degrees. Spread over 30 acres in Jersey City and Englewood Cliffs in New Jersey, 55 percent of its students are women.

Hinduism is oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal.

SNAP urges: investigate Jesuit priests

SNAP urges Cook County prosecutor to investigate Jesuit priests in Donald McGuire sex abuse case

SNAP urges Cook County prosecutor to investigate Jesuit priests in Donald McGuire sex abuse case

Victim advocacy group makes request in wake of new claims in men's lawsuit that alleges a cover-up in abuse case

By Becky Schlikerman, Tribune reporter

An advocacy group for people abused by priests on Wednesday asked Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez to launch a grand jury investigation into the Chicago-based Jesuit province.

The plea comes after a scathing addition to three men's lawsuit was filed in Circuit Court alleging that Jesuit leaders in Chicago knew that now-defrocked Catholic priest Donald McGuire was sexually abusing underage boys and that they sought to cover it up and mislead authorities.

"We want the prosecutor of Cook County to investigate whether there is sufficient evidence of crimes committed by the Jesuit superiors," said Barbara Blaine, president of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP.) "It seems as though there's evidence of conspiracy (and) evidence of perjury."

The state's attorney's office has not been able to review the motion added to the lawsuit or SNAP's request and could not comment on SNAP's call for a grand jury probe, spokesman Andy Conklin said.

The Rev. Timothy Kesicki, provincial of the Chicago-Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, said in a statement that the local province would not comment on legal proceedings concerning McGuire.

"I emphasize what we have said repeatedly, we are sorry," Kesicki said in the statement. "We are painfully aware that in the past we did not do enough to prevent abuse of children and vulnerable adults, and that we made mistakes by thinking that restrictive measures we undertook with regard to Donald McGuire would be effective. More important, we failed to listen to those who came forward and to meet their courage in dealing with Donald McGuire as we should have."

The motion for punitive damages filed Monday by three men allegedly abused by McGuire includes excerpts of letters written between Jesuit leaders that indicate they were aware of abuse.

The document alleges the Jesuit community's actions allowed McGuire to continue his sexual abuse of boys for dozens of years before he was sentenced in February 2009 to 25 years in prison.

"It's outrageous when you think of what they did to the children," Blaine said. "Why on earth they would leave more kids at risk?"

The Occult & Secret Societies

The crest of the Vatican featuring a dragon/serpent.

The word Vatican literally means "divining serpent".
Continuing the series entitled, "Know Your Enemy" by Mark Fairley, this selection of videos addresses the occult and secret societies as extensions of the Babylonian mystery religion.

The "enemy" is not a person or even a group of people for we wrestle not against flesh & blood.  The "enemy" is Satan who exerts himself as a spiritual force against that which is of God.

While I am posting a number of videos from this series, these particular ones I happen to believe are some of the most important for Christians to watch.  I hope that you are able to take time to watch them.

There are a number of videos in this series, so feel free to use the arrows on the left and right of the video screen - or the listing of videos at the bottom of the screen - to navigate to the particular topic you wish to review, as listed below:

*Part 23 - Roman Catholicism (This one I particularly recommend)

When Christianity reached Rome, it dropped into a city completely under the spell of Babylonian worship and whose emperor was the current high priest of the mysteries as denoted by the title "Supreme Pontiff". This is why Rome was so intent on brutally persecuting and exterminating Christians. Never underestimate just how much Satan hates God's people nor to what lengths he would go to harm us if he had the power to do so. Because persecution had only made Christianity more formidable, Satan - through Rome - switched to a tactic of manipulation.

In 312 AD, Emperor Constantine signed an edict of Milan which allowed tolerance of Christianity. However, Constantine only did this for political gain and even engineered a false conversion to allow him to use Christianity in furthering his objectives. He appointed leaders in the church as his political advisers and worldliness and corruption began to seep into the church in Rome. Eventually, the title "Supreme Pontiff" which had been reserved for Ceasars in denoting them as the high priest of the mysteries was bestowed upon Damascus, the Bishop of Rome.  This remains a title of the pope of the Roman Catholic church until this day. He is still called the "Supreme Pontiff" as the head of the pagan religion of Babylon, the mystery religion, the fount of satanic worship.

To increase the spread of its mystery religion, the RCC continued to compromise Christian principles in order to attract pagan converts. The RCC simply became a mystery Babylon religion with a Christian facade.

* Part 24 - Catholic Symbols I (This one I particularly recommend)

A review of the Baal, Asherah, and ritual phallic symbolology used by the RCC. It also discusses how Mary is really Asherah or Semiramis renamed. For a detailed review of the Biblical mother of Jesus compared to the Catholic Mary, click here.

* Part 25 - Catholic Symbols II (This one I particularly recommend)

A review of how the RCC openly incorporates satanic and Anti-christ symbolology. The word "Vatican" itself literally means "the divining serpent"; it comes from the Latin word vatis which means diviner or soothsayer.

* Part 26 - Islam & Muhammad (This one I particularly recommend)

Islam's roots are also in the Babylon mystery religion. Muhammad's inspiration for the Qur'an came from what he initially admitted was a demon. Muhammad's wife Khadija then sought direction from her Catholic cousin to explain the spiritual encounter and was told that it must have been a message from God. After that, Muhammad started to think of himself as a prophet who had been visited by an angel of God.  However, as a result of this experience, Muhammad became suicidal and attempted to kill himself multiple times.

Muhammad was thought to be demonically possessed even as a child, and this possession is echoed even in the Islamic holy books (Sura 81:22-25, Sura 69:41-42, Surah 53:21, Hadith of Bukhari Volume 7 #660). There is also overwhelming evidence (including in Islamic holy books) that Muhammad was a pedophile, marrying his wife Aisha when she was 6 years old and consummating this relationship when she was 9 years old. The sexual perversion from which Islam springs is also why Muslim men are promised constant fornication with virgins as a depiction of their paradise after death.

* Part 27 - Allah (This one I particularly recommend)

Muhammad was born into a culture of moon worship who referred to this god as "Al-Ilah", denoting him as supreme over all their other gods.  This name later became shortened to "Allah". Muhammad tried to convince the Christians and Jews that his "Allah" was the same as Yahweh, but they knew such was not the case and rejected his appeals as heresy. As a result, Satan - through Muhammad - switched from Plan "A" (manipulation) to Plan "B" (intimidation) and began to seek the annihilation of both.

This dichotomy is reflected in Muhammad's writings, where the earlier ones (from Mecca) were peaceful to the Jews and the later writings (from Medina) were antagonistic towards them. To explain the many contradictions in the Qur'an, Islam operates on a principle of Abrogation which means that the later writings cancel out the earlier ones.

When appealing to the masses as a "religion of peace", Muslims will often point to the earlier writings of Muhammad in full knowledge that these verses have been effectively nullified by Muhammad's later writings calling for the slaughter of all infidels (unbelievers). The word "Islam" literally means submission and refers to the fact that its goal is to have the whole world in submission to its moon god, Allah.

* Part 28 - The Kabah (This one I particularly recommend)

The Black stone is contained in the Kabah in Mecca, which is another example of Babylonian worship which permeates Islam. Images in tribute to the Kabah can be seen all across the world for its use in worship predates Islam back to the days of moon worship. *For info about the kissing of the Black Stone in the Kabah and its tie to pagan moon worship, click here.  Please excuse the frank nature of the discussion, however considering the sexual rituals associated with Babylonian mysticism which we have reviewed already, this should be no surprise.

*Part 29 - The Islamic Catholic Connection (This one I particularly recommend)

The connections and commonalities between Catholicism and Islam reveal the truth of their shared roots in Babylon. This root will become more clear as the ecumenical movement gains more ground in uncovering the fact that they are both offshoots of the original mystery religion.

* Part 30 - The Dark Ages (This one I particularly recommend)

Occult philosophies coming out of the Babylonian mysteries began to flourish. For a list of many of these occult practices which continue today, see the Fuel Project's Occult Checklist.

The RCC became the most powerful spiritual and political entity in the world. Legal authority over the setting up of kings in Europe was in the hands of the Catholic church. The previous Roman Empire became the Holy Roman Empire as the RCC conquered lands and pillaged the people to grow its own wealth, privilege, and power. They extorted money from the people by selling indulgences (offering forgiveness of sins for money) and allowing salvation to be purchased by tieing it to the invention of purgatory. By discouraging individual study of Scripture as well as preventing it being made available in the common tongue, the RCC kept the people in ignorance and dependant upon itself for "revelations" from its god.

Part 31 - The Information War I

The Reformation (where men started to openly challenge the heresies & corruption of the RCC) combined with the invention of the printing press allowed people to hear the truths of the word of God and break away from RCC tyrany. The Bible then began to be printed in common languages. Although the RCC attempted to burn any copy it found as well as execute those involved in providing the translations, the RCC's control over its empire began to slip. The history of early Bible translations is discussed.

Part 32 - The Information War II
The discussion on the development of Bible versions continues to be outlined here. Henry the VIII broke from the RCC and founded the Church of England or the Anglican Church - including its own English Bible - and the monarchs of England became head of this church. However, when Queen "Bloody" Mary came to power, she attempted to bring England back under Roman authority, burning at the stake anyone thought to be a Protestant. The Reformers were allowed to return to England after the reign of "Bloody" Mary ended.

In 1582, the RCC surrendered their fight against a Latin-only Bible and created its own English version, but based singularly on the already proven corrupt Latin vulgate translation. In many ways, the Church of England is a sister to the RCC in origin, doctrine, and practice, even to the point of persecuting protestants against the church as had the RCC. Although Satan - through the RCC - attempted to establish a heirarchy of knowledge to limit people's knowlede of God and keep them dependant upon that organization, he failed yet again. The Reformers were killed, but because of their moral courage, the RCC stronghold was broken.

Yet Satan never changes. He still wants to control the information flow about God in order to limit people's knowledge of God. The most effective way to control the flow of information today is to control the media. Will we be courageous enough to stand up for the Gospel, even at the expense of our lives?

Part 33 - The Jesuits
As the reformation threatened to take away the power of the RCC, they established a counter reformation to nullify it and reassert its dominence. Therefore the Council of Trent was held to "clean-up" the RCC and reaffirm it as the only true church of God. Fundamental to this movement was the establishment of new religious orders, including the Society of Jesus or as they are commonly called, the Jesuits.

The founder of the Jesuits was Ignatius Loyola. Loyola eventually dedicated his life to an Asherah in a Benedectine monestary in Monserrat and later moved to live in a cave. Like Muhammad, Loyola received demonic visitations in the cave after he spent some time in self-mutilation, claiming that a figure in the shape of a serpent gave him revelation about the secret doctrine of the Catholic church. It is said that Loyola had mystic powers after this time. Loyola and 6 companians formed the initial brotherhood of the Society of Jesus, and he became its first Superior General of the order. Their goal was to reestablish the dominence of the RCC, and eventually, that organization saw the need for such a military order to fight against the work of the Reformation and it became a recognized arm of the RCC.

Part 34 - The Spiritual Exercises
Loyola ritualized his actions in the cave which led to the demonic visions as something called the "Spiritual Exercises".  Every Jesuit was required to go through this initiation. By the end of this process, the Jesuit's mind would be broken and brought into complete subjection to his superiors and the order. According to their constitution, the Jesuit superiors could even command a Jesuit to sin to further their goalds for the Supreme General was to be seen as the vicar of Christ just as the pope is to the RCC laity. Even today, the Spiritual Exercises are promoted within "Emergent Christianity" by individuals such as Tony Campolo.

Part 35 - The Jesuit Oath
The Jesuit Oath commits each member to do any and all of the following in furthering the goals of the pope:

  • Become a "dissembler" or "fifth column" in order to obtain the confidence of and deceive the masses in information gathering;

  • Incite wars and bloodshed in order to disrupt the peace of nations not under RCC control;

  • Obtain leadership positions in religion, government, financial and education sectors in order to render them in service to the pope;

  • Consecrate his labors in blood by executing and exterminating heretics.

The full Jesuit oath may be read here.

Part 36 - Jesuit Deception
The Jesuit is assured that he will never have to be accountable, and is absolved of all personal responsibility - even before God - for any act committed in obeying the commands of those higher up in the heirarchy.

Part 37 - The Rise & Fall of the Jesuits
The Jesuits figured out that controlling education went a long ways to controlling information among the masses and therefore set-up various institutions of education worldwide to mold the "minds and souls of men". However, as a number of European governments grew to resent the Jesuit influence, they began to loose favor. Under pressure from European monarchs, the RCC abolished the Jesuit order in 1773.

Part 38 - The Enlightenment
The wickedness of the Jesuits and the RCC in general ignited a dramatic rejection of Christianity by many in Europe via a movement called "The Enlightenment." Even today many do not understand that neither the Crusades nor the Inquisition were Christian endeavors, but were the workings of the satanically-inspired RCC originization whose primary victims were the true Christians. In an effort to be rid of the type of religious control & corruption wielded by the RCC, people began to desire a type of godless society which would be free of such religious influences.

Instead of looking to God's ways (which they falsely believed were exemplified by the Catholic church), man would look to science and reason for all answers. Like Eve in the Garden, they believed the lie that God was a vengeful, wrathful God who hated man and desired to keep him in ignorance. Also like Eve, they did not know that in turning from the Tree of Life (God) to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil (man), they had been deceived by the "divining serpent" (Vatican). Needing some answer for the very existence of man and even the world in general, but not wanting to acknowledge the Christian God, the school of thought called Deism began to emerge.

Part 39 - Deism
Deism puts forth that there is a Creator, but this Creator is not personally involved with his/her creation. Since there is no direct interaction with this Creator, there is no direct revelation from him/her. In this way, all religions contain some validity and it is up to each person to pick and choose which truths are most relevant for themselves. According to this mindset, there is no such thing as an absolute truth of God. Everyone is right in their understanding of God because everyone has just a small portion of the truth.

Deism was a forerunner to Pantheism which says that not only is God observable in nature, but God is nature itself. In pantheism, God typically becomes female and is referred to as "Mother Nature", "Mother Earth", or "Gaia". Deism is also the roots of Universalism, which falsely teaches that everyone will get to Heaven, such as Carlton Pearson teaches. In its affinity to science, Deism began referring to God in scientific terms and referred to Him as the "Grand Architect of the Universe". The master plan of the Architect would then be accomplished by men as they increased in knowledge. It is around this time that Freemasonry became as a sort of church of Deism, exercising the purist form of Bablylonian mysteries in existence.

Part 40 - Freemasons
The history of lodges and the Freemason brotherhood in using the prinicples of Babylonian mystery religion in architecting a new society and new breed of man, free from religious tyranny.

Part 41 - The Illuminati
Information on the life and teachings of Adam Weishaupt who formed the "Ordo Illuminati Bavarensis" in 1776 as an exclusive sect within Freemasonry. Educated by the Jesuits, Weishaupt adopted many Jesuit principles in his Illuminati organization.

Part 42 - Illuminati Themes
One of the mottoes of the Illuminati is "Order out of Chaos". They create disorder and the bring about the solution to that disorder, whereby they gain control/influence over the minds of the people.

Part 43 - Masonic Symbols I
Occultists believe that once a symbol is created, it generates a power all its own; and the more secret the true meaning of the symbol, the more powerful it is. ALL occult symbols have double meanings to help with concealment.

Part 44 - Masonic Symbols II
A continuing review of the Freemasonry occult symbols.

Donald McGuire: Abusive Priest Had Local Connection "Examining" Boy in St. Charles

donald_mcguire.jpg
Fr. Donald McGuire
A civil suit filed last week in Chicago captured headlines across the nation and brought up more allegations of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, including an incident occurring in Missouri in 1999.

Eighty-year-old Father Donald McGuire, a popular camp director and former spiritual adviser to Mother Theresa, has been serving a 25-year federal sentence since 2008 on charges of molesting minors over a period spanning four decades. The civil suit filed last Monday includes 65 new documents that plaintiff attorneys believe will show that Jesuit officials in Chicago ignored and kept hidden McGuire's sexual abuse despite dozens of warnings about the priest.

One incident involving McGuire occurred in the summer of 1999 when McGuire allegedly brought a 13-year-old boy with him to St. Charles while recovering from hip surgery. Below is part of an affidavit from a Homeland Security Officer investigating that incident.

Warning: It gets pretty strange.

Victim A stated that one of the early trips was to Missouri, where McGUIRE, Victim
A, and some others stayed at the home of a physician who was treating McGUIRE after a surgery. While in Missouri, McGUIRE required Victim A to participate in a "general confession," covering his entire life up to that point.

During Victim A's confession, Victim A stated that he had engaged in masturbation. McGUIRE asked Victim A if he had done any harm to himself, and told Victim
A that McGUIRE would have to inspect Victim A's penis in order to determine whether Victim A
had harmed himself.

After the confession, McGUIRE took Victim A to McGUIRE's room and
locked the door. McGUIRE had Victim A remove Victim A's clothes. McGUIRE told Victim A
words to the effect of, he had "developed nicely," and used a magnifying glass to examine Victim
A's penis. McGUIRE then sprayed the inside of Victim A's penis with baby oil, telling Victim A
that this was so that McGUIRE could better tell if there had been any "damage" from the
masturbation.

Victim A stated that after what happened in Missouri, McGUIRE's sexual abuse
continued to escalate. Over time, the sexual abuse included discussion of sexual topics, McGUIRE's purchasing and showing various forms of pornography to Victim A, McGUIRE's "massages" of Victim A's body and genitalia with various oils, McGUIRE's requiring Victim A to "massage" McGUIRE's body and genitalia with various oils, McGUIRE's requiring Victim A to shower with McGUIRE, McGUIRE's digital penetration of Victim A's anus, and McGUIRE's performing oral sex on Victim A. Victim A stated that McGUIRE engaged in some combination of these activities with Victim A practically every night between approximately May or June 1999 and August 2003, when the two were together.
The affidavit continues that after many years of allowing McGuire to stay in his home, the Missouri physician asked him to leave "primarily because he
believed that McGUIRE was exercising inappropriate control over Victim A."

Bishops agree child sex abuse rules

Bishops agree sex abuse rules
By John Burke Public Affairs Correspondent
Irish Catholic Bishops have privately agreed new guidelines which will establish for the first time a common approach to compelling priests accused of clerical sex abuse to stand down from ministry.

The Sunday Business Post has learned that the bishops have consented to a proposal that would change the longstanding rule under which individual bishops unilaterally decide what level of evidence must be produced before a priest is forced to take what is termed ‘priestly leave’.

The existing rules are based on a historic instruction from the Vatican which alludes to the unilateral power which a bishop possesses over the priests of his diocese.

Under these rules, a bishop or the head of a religious order effectively has the power of deciding whether a cleric should be forced to take priestly leave, when accused of a sex offence. In practice, this has meant that different bishops and heads of orders have applied widely different standards and interpretations when dealing with abuse accusations.

In some cases, bishops have forced priests to stand aside after relatively questionable accusations while, in other cases, bishops have allowed priests to remain in full ministry for long periods after a number of complaints had been made against them.

The bishops are understood to have accepted a set of new proposals made by Ian Elliott, the chief executive of the Church’s National Board for Safeguarding Children (NBSC).

The proposals would see a widespread standardisation being applied to how bishops respond to such accusations and the conditions under which a priest must be placed on priestly leave.

The bishops are understood to have consented only recently to the change, which is likely to be approved and applied quickly. It is believed that the new guidelines would involve bishops retaining the ultimate power to determine what action should be taken and when; but it would set out an agreed best practice against which the actions of the bishops could be ultimately benchmarked. The guidelines are expected to be made public once formally approved.

The NBSC has just begun conducting a series of audits into child protection across all Catholic dioceses, after which it will conduct similar audits among the religious orders and other congregations in Ireland.

The audits will focus on the application of existing child protection guidelines.

This review process is expected to last until the end of the year, with a mid-term report expected from the NBSC as early as next month, to coincide with the board’s annual report.

The move comes as the Church is preparing for a series of difficult weeks ahead, with the impending publication of the Commission of Investigation into the diocese of Cloyne.

Gay pastor settlement with Catholic U

Rev. James St. George

A Pennsylvania professor and cleric, who was forced to leave Chestnut Hill College because he is gay, has reached a settlement with his former employer, and has landed a new teaching job at the University of Pennsylvania.

Rev. James St. George confirmed last week he is co-teaching a course on religion, social justice, and urban development, together with another member of Penn’s teaching staff. He said he was invited to co-teach the course with professor Andrew Lamas, and that Lamas compensating him directly, not the University.

St. George, who was dismissed from his teaching job at Chestnut Hill College on February 18 after the college learned he was gay, recently reached a settlement with the Catholic college.

The college terminated St. George after he made “public statements of his involvement in a gay relationship with another man.”

St. George had written about his 15-year gay relationship on his personal blog.

“There are no hard feelings on my part,” St. George said regarding the settlement with Chestnut Hill College. “We all own our own stuff and can move forward and not hate each other.”

Asked if he received a monetary settlement, St. George said: “I can’t comment on anything with Chestnut Hill College. I’ve never in my life sued anybody, or went to court, or wanted to get money from them.”

Chestnut Hill College, a private Catholic school, said that when St. George was hired, it was unaware he belonged to a branch of Catholicism not associated with the Vatican and that allows priests to be actively gay.

The church where St. George is a pastor — the St. Miriam Church in Blue Bell, Penn. — is affiliated with the Old Catholic Apostolic Church of America, which vows not to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, and performs commitment ceremonies for gays and lesbians.

The media’s sex-abuse double standard

Amplify’d from dailycaller.com

The media’s sex-abuse double standard

Yet another Catholic diocese has come under a deluge of criminal and civil suits from individuals claiming to have been sexually abused by priests. On February 16, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia agreed to reopen 37 possible cases of child sexual abuse mentioned during grand jury proceedings. The grand jury also recommended charging Monsignor William Lynn with two criminal counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and pressing other criminal charges against three priests and a Catholic school teacher. Several priests were placed on leave of absence after having been accused.

The phenomenon of priestly sexual abuse has been a deeply disturbing problem for the Church in the United States and abroad. In the United States, Ireland, and Germany, clerical abuse and the subsequent cover-up by bishops has been a terrible source of scandal.

Certainly, no amount of child sexual predation is tolerable, and Catholic priests have to be called to a higher standard. However, the manner in which the media has reported on the matter has been both dishonest and biased. The media’s dishonesty is shown in its refusal to call the problem what it is — a problem of homosexuality among the clergy. The media’s bias is shown by its near-systematic refusal to report on the much worse problem, both in terms of volume and in terms of percentages, of sexual abuse by public school teachers.

The relationship between the abuse crisis and homosexuality among Catholic clergy is not difficult to see. According to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice report on clerical sexual abuse, published at the request of the American bishops in 2002, 81% of children in alleged cases of sexual abuse were males; further, most of the cases involved post-pubescent children. Thus, the problem is not even one of pedophilia, in most cases; rather, it is an issue of pederasty. A priest accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy, something much more consistent with homosexual behavior, is in a different league from someone molesting a seven-year-old.

It is well documented that after the Second Vatican Council, the Church in the United States and in many countries throughout the world began admitting more and more seminarians with known homosexual tendencies, something that would have been viewed as shocking before the Council. Studies and news reports on the subject have varied in their estimations of the number of homosexual priests, but it is consistently estimated that the percentage of homosexuals in the priesthood is higher than in the general male population. A number of books and news reports, most notably author Michael Rose’s best-selling Goodbye, Good Men, discussed the appalling lack of discipline in Catholic seminaries, which in some cases became hotbeds of homosexual activity. The Vatican attempted to combat this issue early in Pope Benedict’s pontificate by issuing a document preventing admission to seminary of men with deep-seated homosexual tendencies.

Beyond the mischaracterization of the crisis, the media has narrowly focused on the priesthood while ignoring more serious problems of abuse in other sectors of society, particularly in public schools. A few media reports have indicated that sexual abuse by teachers in public schools utterly dwarfs the problem of priestly abuse, in a system where dismissing a teacher is exceedingly difficult. In New York City, for example, public school teachers are ten times more likely to abuse children than are Catholic priests. Teachers, Boy Scout leaders, foster parents, counselors, and physicians all have higher rates of child abuse than do Catholic priests.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York has consistently called out the media for biased reporting on this issue, believing that hatred for the Church is at the heart of much of the unfair coverage. He has particularly pointed out the failure of the New York media to report on abuse by ministers of other religions, particularly by Jewish rabbis. Clearly, the Catholic Church is being singled out beyond other religious congregations.

There is no doubt that the media has helped the Church to initiate badly needed reforms in priestly formation and child protection by shining light on the problem of priestly sexual abuse. At the end of the day, however, the media’s double standard of coverage all boils down to the Catholic Church’s opposition to abortion and homosexual sex acts. Religious institutions that fail to take strong stances on such issues (for example, most branches of Judaism) do not undergo the scrutiny the Catholic Church does. The media would serve the public much better, and help to protect more children, if they ditched the double standard.

John Gerardi is a student at Notre Dame Law School. He writes on topics relating to religion and society.

The alleged clerical sex abuse victims have accused the Maltese Church of further delaying their quest for justice.

Lawrence Grech, spokesman for the alleged victims, accused the Church of delaying tactics pending the outcome of the criminal court case.

“The Church’s best weapon is silence. Why are we facing more delays when the Curia has already admitted we have a case?” he told The Sunday Times.

The Curia said last October that following investigations by its Response Team, there was enough evidence to support allegations by eight men that they were sexually abused as minors and the case was referred to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith for evaluation.

Last January, the Vatican had instructed the Maltese Church to set up a tribunal to conduct the judicial process into allegations that three priests sexually abused boys, aged 13 to 16, at an orphanage two decades ago.

Judges from the Metropolitan Tribunal were meant to be involved in the tribunal, which the Curia had said would be set up within days.

The development was seen as a major step towards the conclusion of Church proceedings against three priests accused of molesting children in their care at St Joseph’s Home in St Venera in the late 1980s. One of the priests died last January.

But Mr Grech said the men had been kept in the dark about the case since The Sunday Times reported last January that a tribunal had been set up.

“It’s been nearly a year since we met the Pope, and since then we’ve met the Archbishop and (Vatican official) Mgr Charles Scicluna – and yet we still have no results.”

The men had a private audience with Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Malta a year ago, in an encounter which was reported in the international media. The alleged victims also wrote to the Pope last December to express their dismay over the delays.

“I was raised by priests and we’re part of the Church but this is too much. Some of my friends have forgiven the priests for what they’ve done, but I haven’t. The priests should have long been defrocked,” Mr Grech said.

Joseph Magro, another of the alleged victims, questioned if the promised tribunal had in fact been set up.

“There seems to be complete disinterest from the Curia, which appears to hope the problem will disappear. The least I would have expected is to go testify again,” he said. The men’s only consolation appears to be the criminal case, which has been expedited in recent months.

Mr Grech said he believed it was thanks to the media’s attention to their plight that the court case was proceeding well, with a verdict expected in August.

When contacted, the Curia said in a terse response that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith had directly appointed one of the judges from the Metropolitan Tribunal as a delegate “to execute an administrative penal canonical process”.

“This process is still going on,” a Curia spokesman said.
