Thermal Heat Map Images of Fukushima

Amplify’d from bigdustup.blogspot.com
Japanese NHK TV showed these images today (22 March in Japan). Some areas are supposedly 128 degrees C. They also mentioned a core temperature, but I must have heard it wrong. I thought I heard 300-some degrees C. Can't be right.  Black smoke has been coming out of reactor 3.

Fukushima Reactors 1 through 4 in false-color IR.  Blue and green are cool, orange and red are hot, white is very hot

Closeup of Reactor 3

Reactor 3.  The building appears to have been almost totally destroyed.  I can't imagine that the spent fuel pool is intact.  It is located fairly high in the structure -- and there is nothing left much higher than the surrounding low buildings.  I wonder if the reactor vessel top has been crushed or broken off.

Highway to Hell

By RoboMonkey

“The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.” One has to wonder why people so willfully refuse to see where their intentions are leading… thus making it impossible for them to turn, slow down, or stop.

U.S. To Evacuate 87,300 U.S. Citizens

Amplify’d from www.staradvertiser.com

Evacuees' destination unclear

U.S. and state officials do not know whether U.S. citizens will be flown into Hawaii

As the State Department flew its first group of evacuees out of Japan yesterday, the top U.S. military commander in the Pacific said the United States would be prepared to evacuate as many as 87,300 U.S. citizens.

Adm. Robert Willard, head of the Hawaii-based U.S. Pacific Command, said the U.S. is operating four commercial aircraft out of Narita Airport near Tokyo for citizens who want to leave the country.

The 87,300 people include U.S. military personnel and families in Japan, including the large naval base at Yokosuka, Willard said in a news teleconference from Camp H.M. Smith to the Pentagon.

Meanwhile, officials were uncertain how many American citizens fleeing Japan might end up in the islands.

The Pacific Command had no word yesterday on whether to expect any military members stationed in Japan 'Aî or their families 'Aî from the evacuation, spokeswoman Navy Lt. Theresa Donnelly said.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie's office also had no idea whether planeloads of U.S. citizens in Japan were expected to arrive in Hawaii. The Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki, which caters to the military, said it had no large numbers of sudden bookings from Asia.

The State Department has urged Americans in Japan to consider departing while authorizing the voluntary departure of families of U.S. government employees in Tokyo, Nagoya and Yokohama.

The first flight of fewer than 100 dependents of State Department employees in the northeastern region of Japan left yesterday for Taipei, and more flights are expected today.

Thousands of military dependents could head for the United States, the designated 'safe haven."

The authorization for their departure provides for a temporary stop in South Korea, where U.S. Forces Korea is preparing temporary accommodations, the Department of Defense said.

The University of Hawaii said it has been in contact with 27 UH-Manoa students and an additional eight from UH-Hilo who are in southern Japan on study-abroad, exchange or graduate studies programs, spokeswoman Lynne Waters said.

'We are in communication with them, and are actively assisting them in abiding by this travel warning from the U.S. State Department," Waters said in a statement.

Brad Glosserman, executive director of the Honolulu-based Pacific Forum for Strategic and International Studies, said the statements from the State Department and Pentagon were carefully worded to not be seen as critical of the Japanese government 'Aî while looking out for the interests of U.S. citizens.

'They're walking a diplomatic tightrope,"'Glosserman said. 'They don't want to be seen as expressing lack of confidence or suggesting the situation is other than what the Japanese government says it is."

Glosserman supported the language in the statements.

'The last thing you want to say is, 'Get on a plane and go home.' That causes panic and it may not be right," Glosserman said. 'We want to be careful but we don't want to overreact."

Victoria Jackson: Homophobic Rant?

Media Homophobic Rant? Former SNL Star Victoria Jackson Slams ‘Glee’

In a column for WorldNetDaily.com, conservative comedian Victoria Jackson had a provocative reaction to the latest episode of Glee, the hit TV show about high school outcasts who find social solace singing and dancing together.

The show is peppered with gay themes–in last week’s episode, for instance, two gay characters exchanged a long-awaited kiss.

Jackson writes:

Did you see “Glee” this week? Sickening! And, besides shoving the gay thing down our throats, they made a mockery of Christians – again! I wonder what their agenda is? Hey, producers of “Glee” – what’s your agenda? One-way tolerance?

Liberal websites like the Huffington Post are calling Jackson’s remarks a “homophobic rant”–which is perhaps an overstatement. Her comments could be interpreted as criticism of Glee’s overt political themes, which are far left and politically correct.

The HuffPo is also denouncing what it calls her “anti-Muslim and Arab diatribe” from the same column. Her offending paragraph appears below:

This new al-Qaida magazine for women has beauty tips and suicide-bomber tips! Gimme a break! That is as ridiculous as two men kissing on the mouth! And I don’t care what is politically correct. Everyone knows that two men on a wedding cake is a comedy skit, not an “alternate lifestyle”! There I said it! Ridiculous!

Jackson is an active member of the tea party.

Chernobyl Opens For Tourism

Chernobyl Opens For Tourism

Next month marks Chernobyl's 25th anniversary and the site is now accepting tourists. Christie Nicholson reports

Listen to this Podcast

Japan’s ongoing nuclear crisis is a gruesome reminder of another nuclear accident, the worst in history: Chernobyl is approaching its 25th anniversary. And, believe it or not, the area is open for tourism.

Just last week Scientific American contributor Charles Choi visited. He was accompanied by physicist Vadim Chumack of the Research Center for Radiation Medicine at the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

So how safe is it to put Chernobyl on your Eastern European itinerary?

Of the four radioactive materials released, Iodine-131 was gone after three months. But cesium-137 and strontium-90 both take about 30 years for their quantities to be halved. And plutonim-239 has a half-life of 24,000 years. Nevertheless, a day trip was probably okay by five years after the accident.

Choi reports that tourists are strictly limited to certain areas, avoiding such hot spots as the concrete shelter that seals off the damaged reactor. And visitors may

catch glimpses of wildlife. Birds and insects have suffered, but some mammal

populations have thrived, probably because of the conspicuous lack of people.

“Who The Hell Do You Think You Are?”

“Who The Hell Do You Think You Are?” Farrakhan Blasts Obama On Libya Bombing

Amplify’d from www.prisonplanet.com

Final Call

Sunday, March 20, 2011

“Well, today our dear brother (Obama) has to be very, very careful in this decision that he and his Secretary of State, and [French President Nicolas] Sarkozy and [British] Prime Minister [David] Cameron and others are planning. They would love to go into Libya and kill Brother Gadhafi, and kill his children as they did with Saddam Hussein and his sons, Qusay and Uday. You must remember, dear people of America, that whenever government wants you to think and act in a certain way that would bring justification to an action that they are already planning to make, they must make the person that they hate a ‘boogey man,’ ” he said. Col. Gadhafi, who led a bloodless coup against a U.S. ally over 40 years ago, has seen constant negative publicity and was once called the “Mad Dog of the Middle East” by American leaders and analysts.

“Who The Hell Do You Think You Are?” Farrakhan Blasts Obama On Libya Bombing Africa Libya map 2

‘Is it that you’re (U.S. officials) so concerned over the blood that is being shed in Libya, when you looked the other way when the Israeli Defense Force was bombing the innocent people of Gaza, unarmed men, women and children?’

People unhappy with government are not solely in Libya, he pointed out. Many are unhappy with Mr. Obama, he said.

The U.S. government has a long history of deposing leaders of other nations in order to get natural resources, more specifically-oil, he continued, saying the imperialistic forces are not interested in saving those being killed, it is just a “noble motive to hide your (the U.S. government’s) wicked agenda!”

“When George W. Bush was president, he said they wanted regime change in Iran, in (North) Korea regime change-how do you get regime change America? How do you do that? Congress, the Congress of the United States, voted to spend $150 million to replace the government in Iran that America doesn’t like, so they send their agents in to work among the dissatisfied. So when they had this election, and the people in Iran rose up, they have legitimate grievances, all right-but stimulated from the outside,” Minister Farrakhan continued. “Well, what about Libya? How much money is being spent to arm the so-called rebels? They’re dissatisfied! Well, what is their dissatisfaction about? Do they (Libyans) have jobs? Yes. Do they have food? Yes. Has Gadhafi used the oil money to build Libya? Yes. Did Gadhafi use oil money and discover water under the Sahara Desert, and brought that water to the surface; and brought water from Benghazi all the way to the border almost of Tunisia? Did he impose farming in the desert so that they could feed their own people? Yes. Are there billions of dollars that he’s spending building homes, building apartments for his people? Yes. So something is under this!” said Minister Farrakhan.

“Is it that you’re (U.S. officials) so concerned over the blood that is being shed in Libya, when you looked the other way when the Israeli Defense Force was bombing the innocent people of Gaza, unarmed men, women and children? … You looked the other way when the Israeli Defense Force went into Lebanon thinking that they were going to have an easy victory, then you had to come out with your tail between your legs?”

Minister Farrakhan said Col. Gadhafi has been investing money in Africa, enjoys international friendship, and should not be killed simply because he is not America’s friend.

“Now, I want to warn you, in the Name of Allah, that this is more complex than what you think! Go into Libya if you want to. The Libyans do not want foreign occupation on their land. And when you make that kind of move, if you’re not careful, you’ll unite the Libyan people against you!”

Inside America members of the Branch Davidian religious sect were killed in 1993 in Waco, Texas, by federal law enforcement, while men, women and children of the MOVE organization were killed when police bombed their home during a 1985 standoff in Philadelphia, he said. Current American outrage is nothing but hypocrisy, the Minister said.

To President Obama, Minister Farrakhan delivered a pointed warning: “Don’t let these wicked demons move you in a direction that will absolutely ruin your future with your people in Africa and throughout the world. They don’t like the way you handled (former Egyptian President Hosni) Mubarak! They don’t like the way you’re handling the situation in the Arab world! So I would advise you to be careful-and move with wisdom and skill.

And then, Minister Farrakhan offered President Obama some divine advice.

“Why don’t you organize a group of respected Americans, and ask for a meeting with Gadhafi? You can’t order him to step down, and get out-who the hell do you think you are, that you can talk to a man that built a country over 42 years, and ask him step down and get out? Can anybody ask you? Well, well there’s a lot, now, [that are] going to ask you to step out of the White House, because they don’t want a Black face in the White House,” said Minister Farrakhan.

“Be careful, brother, how you handle this situation because it is coming to America! It has already started. Look in Wisconsin! Look in Ohio! Look at what’s going on in your country! And remember your words because the American people are rising against their own government: It’s not Muslims; it’s not Black people! It’s White militias that are angry with their government, and they are well armed. Are you going to tell them-’Put your arms down, and let’s talk it over peacefully?’ I hope so. But if not, America will be bathed in blood, not because Farrakhan said so, but because the dissatisfaction in America has reached the boiling point. Be careful how you manipulate the dissatisfaction in Libya and other parts of the Muslim world,” he warned.

FLASHBACK: Farrakhan’s recent speeches suggest he is coming to the realization that the enemy is not the white man, but the new world order that seeks to dominate, brutalize and degrade people of every color and creed throughout the world.

Japanese Told Not to Drink Tap Water

Japanese Villagers Told Not to Drink Tap Water

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's Health Ministry says it has advised a village near a crippled nuclear plant not to drink tap water due to elevated levels of radioactive iodine.

Ministry spokesman Takayuki Matsuda said Sunday that radioactive iodine three times the normal level was detected in Iitate, a village of about 6,000 people 30 kilometers (19 miles) northwest of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. That's still one twenty-sixth of the level of a chest X-ray and poses no danger to humans, he said.

A health scare was sparked this weekend when officials said they had found traces of radiation in the water supply in Tokyo and other parts of Japan, as well as in spinach and milk. They also said there were tiny amounts in chrysanthemum greens and canola.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

TOKYO (AP) — At a bustling Tokyo supermarket Sunday, wary shoppers avoided one particular bin of spinach.

The produce came from Ibaraki prefecture in the northeast, where radiation was found in spinach grown up to 75 miles (120 kilometers) from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. Another bin of spinach — labeled as being from Chiba prefecture, west of Tokyo — was sold out.

"It's a little hard to say this, but I won't buy vegetables from Fukushima and that area," said shopper Yukihiro Sato, 75.

From corner stores to Tokyo's vast Tsukiji fish market, Japanese shoppers picked groceries with care Sunday after the discovery of contamination in spinach and milk fanned fears about the safety of this crowded country's food supply.

The anxiety added to the spreading impact of the unfolding nuclear crisis triggered when the March 11 tsunami battered the Fukushima complex, wrecking its cooling system and leading to the release of radioactive material.

On Sunday, the government banned shipments of milk from one area and spinach from another and said it found contamination on two more vegetables — canola and chrysanthemum greens — and in three more prefectures.

There were no signs Sunday of the panic buying that stripped Tokyo supermarkets of food last week. Instead, shoppers scrutinized the source of items and tried to avoid what they worried might be tainted.

Mayumi Mizutani was shopping for bottled water, saying she was worried about the health of her visiting 2-year-old grandchild after a tiny amount of radioactive iodine was found in Tokyo's tap water. She expressed fears that the toddler could possibly get cancer.

"That's why I'm going to use this water as much as possible," she said.

The government said the level of radiation detected on spinach and milk was minuscule and should be no threat to health. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said he had received no reports that would require special measures to be taken regarding tap water.

Tainted milk was found 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the plant on Saturday, a local official said. Spinach was collected from six farms between 60 miles (100 kilometers) and 75 miles (120 kilometers) to the south of the reactors.

On Sunday, authorities found contamination at additional farms in Fukushima and on vegetables in Chiba, Gunma and Tochigi prefectures, said Yoshifumi Kaji, director of the health ministry's inspection and safety division. He said it was possible some tainted foods already have been sold.

Authorities expect to decide by Tuesday on a comprehensive plan to limit food shipments from affected areas, Kaji said at a news conference.

Farmers and merchants expressed fears of their own that public anxiety might hurt even producers of goods that were free of contamination.

"There will probably be damaging rumors," said farmer Shizuko Kohata, 60, who was evacuated from the town of Futaba, near the Fukushima complex, to a sports arena in Saitama, north of Tokyo.

"I grow things and I'm worried about whether I can make it in the future," Kohata said Saturday.

Chiyoko Kaizuka, who with family members farms spinach, broccoli, onions, rice and other crops on 20 hectares (49 acres) in Ibaraki prefecture northeast of Tokyo, said the combination of earthquakes and fears of radiation have her on edge.

"I don't know what effect the radiation will have, but it's impossible to farm," the 83-year-old Kaizuka said Sunday as she stood along a row of fresh, unpicked spinach that was ready to go but now can't be shipped.

On Sunday, an official of Taiwan's Atomic Energy Council said radiation was detected on fava beans imported from Japan, although in an amount that was too low to harm human health. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to deal with the press.

Japan's food exports are worth about $3.3 billion a year — less than 0.5 percent of its total exports — and seafood makes up 45 percent of that, according to government data.

Experts at the World Health Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization were working Sunday to gather more facts to assess the situation, but an FAO spokesman in Rome said that the picture was not yet clear enough for them to release any specific recommendations.

However, the agencies praised the Japanese government for taking steps to test foods and monitor exports for radiation contamination.

In Tokyo, others said they weren't concerned and put the crisis in perspective with other calamities.

"I experienced the war, so if there is enough food for a day or two, I feel we can get by," said Nagako Mizuno, 73, originally from Iwaki, a city in the quake zone, but has lived in Tokyo for 40 years.

"You can't go on living if you worry about it," she said. "It's all the same if everybody ends up dying. I'm not concerned."

Fears of radioactive contamination hurt sales at the Tsukiji market, a vast maze of aisles where merchants at hundreds of stalls sell tuna, octopus and other fish fresh off the boat. The market was unusually quiet over the weekend, a time when it is normally packed with shoppers and tourists.

Traders have been hit hard by power cuts and an exodus of foreigners, and they worry about long-term damage from public fears over possible contamination of fish stocks.

"The impact would last long, like a decade, because people would not eat fish," said merchant Mamoru Saito, 72.

The market had plenty of fresh fish despite the destruction of much of Japan's northeastern fishing fleet in the tsunami. Whole fish and shellfish were laid out on wooden tables washed by a flow of cold water. Fishmongers sawed slabs of frozen tuna into steaks.

At a restaurant adjacent to the market, sushi chef Hideo Ishigami said the nuclear scare and transportation disruptions due to power cuts have cost him business.

"I have a massive drop in the number of customers," said Ishigami, 72.

Associated Press writers Mari Yamaguchi and Elaine Kurtenbach in Tokyo, Debby Wu in Taipei, Taiwan and Margie Mason in Hanoi, Vietnam contributed to this report.
