Glassy Metal Set to Rival Steel

Glassy Metal Set to Rival Steel

Super-resilient material is the first to combine strength and toughness.

Nature

By Zeeya Merali

A metal alloy masquerading as a glass is the first material to be fabricated that is as strong and as tough as the toughest steel. The feat could eventually see such materials replace steel in buildings, cars or bridges.

The terms 'strength' and 'toughness' may be used almost interchangeably in everyday life, but until now, no materials have been found that display both these characteristics. Some materials, such as glass, are strong -- that is, they are scratch-resistant and it is difficult to permanently bend them out of shape when you place a heavy load on them -- but they also tend to be brittle. Others, such as metal, are tough -- that is, they are more difficult to shatter -- but they are generally more malleable.

"The challenge has always been to achieve both high strength and toughness," says Marios Demetriou, a materials scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "But until now we have always had to compromise between the two."

Demetriou and his colleagues have developed an alloy that combines the best features of both by turning to 'amorphous metals'. Their work is published in Nature Materials today.

Strength in weakness

Normal metals are weak and malleable because their atoms are lined up in a crystalline structure and easily slip past each other when placed under a heavy load. Amorphous metals are stronger. They are made by rapidly cooling molten metal, so that its atoms are stuck in a disordered arrangement -- resembling the structure of glass. It takes much more energy to permanently shift these atoms around.

Unfortunately, for a long time these 'glassy metals' also seemed to be inherently brittle. This is because they contain small defects that can clump together into bands, as the material begins to fail, says Demetriou. These bands can rapidly turn into cracks, and the material shatters.

However, materials scientists now know that, ironically, generating an extremely large number of these bands could have the opposite effect -- making the material tougher. "If you dramatically amplify the number of bands, they start to interlace and form networks," says Demetriou. "When new cracks evolve in the glassy metal, these networks cluster around the crack tips, blocking them from growing."

Workings unknown

On their 109th attempt, the team finally struck on the right mix for a glassy metal that can generate a large number of these bands. The successful recipe was mostly palladium, with a small fraction of silver and a smattering of other elements. "We don't yet know why this particular composition works -- it will take a deeper investigation to find out what chemical properties have been altered that affect the material's toughness," Demetriou says.

The team tested the glassy metal's toughness by monitoring how quickly and deeply a crack could move through it. "We found that it is as tough as the toughest steel," he says.

"It's unique to see this combination of strength and toughness in a single material," says John Lewandowski, a materials scientist at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. It's now important to investigate whether adding more elements to the mix -- to create small crystalline regions in the material -- could improve its toughness further, without sacrificing strength, he adds.

Lewandowski also notes that because palladium is a precious metal, it will be too expensive to use the material widely.

Demetriou acknowledges that problem. "It will be most suited for making strong and tough dental and medical implants, because their very high fabrication cost can often justify a high material cost."

However, the team plans to look for a cheaper version based on copper, iron or aluminium, says Demetriou. "If we find it, that material will take over from steel in large-scale engineering forever."

John Boehner offers prayers, help

“To the members of the house and their staffs, I ask that you, on this Sabbath day, that we keep Gabby and her staff in our thoughts and prayers,” Boehner said. Mr. Boehner hasn't even been speaker of the House of Representatives for a week, and already he is expressing the very same things that I fear he will (would) have MUCH more to say about very soon: The Sabbath; NO, Not the real Sabbath, but his Church's mark of authority, SUNDAY. LISTEN CLOSELY, AND YOU'LL HEAR THE DISTINCT VOICE OF THE DRAGON!

John Boehner offers prayers, help

House Speaker John Boehner said the lower chamber is ready to assist in the aftermath of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords being shot, and asked lawmakers and staff to keep her and her aides in their prayers.

Speaking from his hometown of West Chester, Ohio, Boehner struck a somber tone, reflective of the situation he confronts just days into his speakership.

“To the members of the house and their staffs, I ask that you, on this Sabbath day, that we keep Gabby and her staff in our thoughts and prayers,” Boehner said. “Public service is a high honor but these tragic events remind us that all of us in our roles in service to our fellow citizens comes with a risk. This inhuman act should not, and will not, deter us from our calling to represent our constituents and to fulfill our oaths of office. No act, no matter how heinous, must be allowed to stop us from our duty.”

That risk was realized in the Giffords shooting, and reflected by the Republican majority with an altered schedule this week, which will push of the vote to repeal Democrats’ health care reform.

TSA Unconcerned About Dead Dogs on Planes Unless They Are Also Bombs

TSA Unconcerned About Dead Dogs on Planes Unless They Are Also BombsOn Tuesday, a passenger informed airport security that he was bringing a dead dog in a cardboard box on a flight from Newark to Los Angeles. This was fine, until officials realized it hadn't been properly screened for explosives.

A man taking a 3:30 p.m. flight from Newark Liberty to Los Angeles International Airport brought a box to the TSA checkpoint in Newark. When a TSA employee asked the man what was inside, he replied that it was his dead dog.

TSA officials requested that the deceased animal in the box go to the Continental cargo facility for screening. While the plane was in the air, the TSA in Newark was notified that the dead dog was never screened.

The risk wasn't thought great enough to call back the flight. But now all terrorists know the best way to smuggle a bomb on a plane is inside a dead dog. Air travel just got a lot smellier and more dangerous at the same time.

Was the Arizona Shooting the Product of a Three-Year-Old Grudge?

Was the Arizona Shooting the Product of a Three-Year-Old Grudge?
22-year-old Arizona shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner planned ahead. According to court documents, police found evidence of an assassination plot against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords at Loughner's house, including a 2007 letter from Giffords herself.

The letter thanked Loughner for attending a Giffords event and was found stashed in a safe in his house. From the criminal complaint:

Was the Arizona Shooting the Product of a Three-Year-Old Grudge?

According to former high school classmate Caitie Parker, Loughner was fuming after his encounter with Giffords at the 2007 "Congress on Your Corner"—the same kind of event Giffords was holding when she and 19 others were shot yesterday. Loughner "asked her a question, and he told me she was 'stupid and unintelligent,'" Parker said.

A friend recalled the meeting in the Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Loughner said he asked the lawmaker, "How do you know words mean anything?"... Mr. Loughner was "aggravated" when Ms. Giffords, after pausing for a couple of seconds, "responded to him in Spanish and moved on with the meeting."

This brief, weird exchange may have made an outsized impression on Loughner.

“Tucson” Shooter Part of a Military Mind Control Program?

“Tucson” Shooter Part of a Military Mind Control Program?

The Intel Hub

By Shepard Ambellas

Sources such as Fox News are reporting this morning that the suspected Tucson shooter was quoted as saying that he “was recruited by the Army”; however officials say “he was not recruited by the Army”.

This obviously adds even more suspicion to an already horrible tragedy that took place Saturday during a political event at a Tucson grocery store.

Was this a random psychopath or a mind control subject created by a secret black budget program similar to MK Ultra?

Witnesses to the crime took note of the shooters skills, noting that he was well trained, took almost all head shots, and was preparing to reload according to eyewitness reports.

Suspects YouTube Profile listed in "past tense" form.

Some of the most startling information lies within the suspects alleged YouTube channel. Upon close examination, everything is worded in a “past tense” as if someone else or some agency created the YouTube channel for the suspect. Could this be yet another sign of an MK-Ultra mind control operation?

It also raises an eyebrow that the suspect does not appear in any of the videos on his channel. All of the videos on the channel were made using text only.

The suspected killer is due in court Sunday morning. We will be updating you with the current status and details of the case.

Police have also released a description of a “person of interest” that may be involved in the murders.

Paul Joseph Watson of the alternative news website Infowars.com details the suspected shooters online habits in the article below.

Jared Loughner, the gunman who shot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and numerous other victims including a Federal Judge and a nine-year-old girl during a political event in Tucson today, was a US military recruit who was obsessed with mind control, mirroring the circumstances of many other mass shooters in history.

Loughner’s You Tube channel contains several rambling text-based videos which discuss his fascination with mind control.

In one of his online rants, Loughner said that he was a “United States Military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix”. Reports suggest that he also may have been deployed to Afghanistan at one point.

What Repeal Of Healthcare?

Repeal Of Healthcare? Or, Health-scare?

No way! They have their work cut out for them...
They will instead 'work' for another type of effort.

This coming week Congress will be engrossed in another type of concern, Hate Crime Laws.

Watch the usual suspects make a mountain out of this issue; They will target The Tea Party, The Neo-Conservative Talk-Show Hosts:
Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, etc.; When the shooter of Arizona was an anarchist, probably a mind-control candidate, not a right-wing fanatic...

The Sheriff of Pima County has already started the ball rolling by blaming the horrendous shooting on the lack of discourse, the lack of civility:
Democrat Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik exploits Gabrielle ...‎

I wonder if the recent bomb (parcel) threats in Mary-Land were a harbinger of Saturday's attack?

Six People, Including Police Officer, Shot Near Baltimore Nightclub
By Staff, Associated Press

Baltimore (AP) – A police officer and another man died after shooting erupted early Sunday outside a Baltimore nightclub where a fight broke out, leaving one other officer and three women wounded by gunfire, police said.

No arrests were immediately announced.

Authorities said police were called to the downtown establishment Club Select for a report of a fight and shots broke out shortly after 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers who initially arrived at the nightclub notified other officers of a large fight and called for backup.

He said some officers fired weapons and investigators are trying to determine whether there was any civilian gunfire.

Guglielmi says no arrests were immediately made but dozens of people had been taken to a police station and were being questioned.

"It was a pretty significant fight from what we understand. A large fight and a number of officers responded," Guglielmi told The Associated Press. "It ultimately spilled outside into the parking lot."

The police spokesman said the dead officer was 33 but he declined to give his name. He also did not give the name of the other male victim, adding details were sketchy and investigators were on the scene trying to determine what happened.

He said the second officer was shot in a leg and was expected to recover. He added all four of the civilians were in their 20s but he had no further details early Sunday.

A dispatcher answering the phone at the University of Maryland Medical Center's shock trauma center in Baltimore said seven people were brought there after the shooting. But she declined to identify them by name or provide further details.

"We are investigating the circumstances of the shooting," Guglielmi said. "We know some officers discharged their weapons. All we can say is multiple people were shot: four civilians, two police officers."

"It's unclear, the shooting part. We know officers fired their weapons and we're trying to root out why and whether there was any civilian gunfire," he said.

He added that the dozens of people were undergoing questioning, adding "we have a lot of ground to cover, a lot of people to talk to."

Catholic destruction of the Word of God

Catholic destruction of the Word of God

What havoc has been made of books through every century of the Christian era? Where are fifty gospels, condemned as spurious by the bull of Pope Gelasius? Where are the forty wagon-loads of Hebrew manuscripts burned in France, by order of another pope, because suspected of heresy? Remember the 'index expurgatorius', the inquisition, the stake, the axe, the halter and the guillotine.
[John Adams, letter to John Taylor]
