Parental Stress Affects Genome · December 22, 2010

The field of epigenetics is beginning to reveal the relationship between parental lifestyle or stresses and their effects on children and grandchildren. Historically it was thought that family genetic inheritance involved the DNA through the genes only. Now however, “increasing experimental evidence, now leads scientists to believe that other factors allow genes to be switched on and off in response to environmental stimuli. The consequences of which may affect subsequent generations.”

Genetic diseases it has been discovered may have been transmitted because of the circumstances of the mother or father, or both at the time of conception or at other times during the pregnancy cycle. And in the case of some genetic diseases, prior to conception if the father contributed the genetic deficiency.

For instance, a small deletion of a chromosome can transmit one disease if the mutation comes from the mother, but a different disease if the same mutation comes from the father.

“Professor Wolf Reik, Developmental Geneticist, Babraham Institute Cambridge helped unravel the control process. He noticed that when a mouse embryo was placed in a culture dish some of genes would be switched off and wondered whether this could also be true for human embryos during In vitro fertilization (IVF)”

Reik discovered that changing the embryo’s environment can could make epigenetic alterations, causing genes to be turned on an off. In experiments with mice, he learned that these changes can be inherited from one generation to another.

Professor Jonathan Seckl, Edinburgh University, studied the ‘transgenerational effects’ and showed “that exposure to stress hormones caused raised anxiety in their offspring, and in generations thereafter.”

Professor Rachel Yehuda, of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York studied women who were pregnant on September 11, 2001 when the terrorist struck New York’s twin towers. She found that those women who were in the last trimester of pregnancy at the time of the attack had lower levels of the hormone cortisol, which assists with coping with stress. Their children were also born with lower levels of cortisol too, which indicates that stressful events in the last trimester of the mother’s pregnancy can change a child’s ability to cope with stress.

While this result is not confirmed until further studies are done, it appears to indicate that environmental changes during pregnancy (at least certain periods of pregnancy) can pass on genetic alterations to children.

Studies in Sweden have even demonstrated that “life expectancy of grandchildren was directly affected by the diet of the grandparents. Fatal childhood diabetes was often associated with their father’s father living during a period of reduced food supply. In a further development, the records revealed that triggering of a trans-generational effect was dependent upon the time in the grandparents’ lives when food had been in short supply. For the grandfather it was just before puberty and for the grandmother it was the moment of conception, crucial moments in the development of sperm and egg. These observations suggest that environmental information, in this case supply of food, was being imprinted on the DNA of the sperm and egg, providing strong evidence that epigenetic inheritance occurs in humans.

In further work, Mike Skinner exposed a pregnant rat to a high dose of a common pesticide. He found that the offspring passed on an array of diseases, such as; tumors, kidney disease and immune dysfunction from generation to generation. This evidence suggests that there are a whole series of environment events that might possibly trigger transgenerational affects and effect future generations.

“Great care should be exercised to have the surroundings of the mother pleasant and happy. The husband and father is under special responsibility to do all in his power to lighten the burden of the wife and mother. He should bear, as much as possible, the burden of her condition. He should be affable, courteous, kind, and tender, and specially attentive to all her wants. Not half the care is taken of some women while they are bearing children that is taken of animals in the stable. Adventist Home, p. 257

“The race is groaning under a weight of accumulated woe because of the sins of former generations. And yet with scarcely a thought or care, men and women of the present generation indulge intemperance by surfeiting and drunkenness and thereby leave, as a legacy for the next generation, disease, enfeebled intellects, and polluted morals.” Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 4, p. 31.

“As a rule, every intemperate man who rears children transmits his inclinations and evil tendencies to his offspring.” Mind, Character and Personality, Vol. 1, p. 135.

As we inch towards Christmas most of us are busy shopping and looking forward to spending the holidays with our friends and family.

While Americans flock to retail stores throughout the nation, the Department of Homeland Security is busy implementing a completely different agenda. This Stazi type agency recently launched their Orwellian “see something, say something” campaign which is aimed at getting everyday American citizens to spy on their neighbors.

As outrage against these ridiculous measures has continued to grow, the threat of terror has once again become an everyday mainstream media talking point. From attacking the food supply to suicide bombers, we are being lead to believe that Al Qaeda will carry out an attack in the very near future.

As noted by Activist Post writer Michael Edwards, we need not be afraid of the actual attack but the establishments response to that attack.

WTF? OMG, LOL! CIA gives WikiLeaks taskforce naughty name

US spy agency forms taskforce to assess fallout from 250,000 leaked US cables

The CIA has launched a taskforce to assess the impact of 250,000 leaked US diplomatic cables. Its name? WikiLeaks Task Force, or WTF for short.

The group will scour the released documents to survey damage caused by the disclosures. One of the most embarrassing revelations was that the US state department had drawn up a list of information it would like on key UN figures – it later emerged the CIA had asked for the information.

“Officially, the panel is called the WikiLeaks Task Force. But at CIA headquarters, it’s mainly known by its all-too-apt acronym: WTF,” the Washington Post reported.

WTF is more commonly associated with the Facebook and Twitter profiles of teenagers than secret agency committees. Given that its expanded version is usually an expression of extreme disbelief, perhaps the term is apt for the CIA’s investigation.

You Are Being Warned! Freezing Temps Worldwide May Lead To Food Shortages

***Update:
American Free Press is reporting that during September and October commodity staples like cotton had already risen by 54 percent, corn had climbed 29 percent, soybeans 22 percent, orange juice 17 percent and sugar by 51 percent. The rise in prices have NOT shown up in Supermarkets because none of the big food corporations wants to be the first to raise prices so dramatically. This cannot continue.  Add the freezing temps to the situation and it could get ugly.

IMVA

Dr. Mark Sircus

This strange weather phenomenon, which you will see in the video below, happened in Newfoundland where the waves were actually frozen as they crashed on the beach. This is exactly what one would expect at the end of the warmest year on record, right? Are we freezing because of global warming? The media is still ranting that one of the effects of global warming is colder, wetter winters. Yes and building seven at the world trade center collapsed on its footprint from a burning ember? Or was it from a burning Rolls Royce engine that was catapulted from one of the planes. Was there ever a reasonable explanation for what was obviously a controlled demolition?

Global warming is why a low temperature record of 42 degrees that had been in place for 169 years in Fort Lauderdale was broken on December 7. Global warming is why people are freezing to death in the northern hemisphere and why they are increasingly finding themselves buried in deeper and deeper snow. Global warming is now an insanity that has been implanted deep into the consciousness of the masses, meaning no matter how cold it gets, it’s getting warmer in the minds of the press and those who control it.

Dr. Willie Soon, astrophysicist and geoscientist at the Solar and Stellar Physics Division of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said, “It’s close to being insane to try to keep insisting these changes in carbon dioxide are going to create all of the disasters that the politicians and doomsayers are trying to tell us. Saying the climate system is completely dominated by how much carbon dioxide we have in the system is crazy—completely wrong. Carbon dioxide is not the major driver for the earth/climate system.” Obviously the sun is the major driver, but then we have other factors like air pollution from human and volcanic sources blocking out more light and thus heat, and now we are also having a breakdown in the Gulf loop current as well as a diminishing of the Gulf Stream. What we have, ladies and gentlemen, is heart-thumping climate change that is going to take a frightening toll on humanity.

Britain for is experiencing some of the

most severe winter weather in a century.

And look at Monday’s report from the Christian Science Monitor. “An early winter snow and ice season just got a little more peculiar over the weekend as a weakening regional high-pressure system over the Pacific allowed huge pockets of warm moisture onshore as part of a weather effect seen only every 10 to 15 years, meteorologists say.” That’s a meteorological expression that means totally freak storms are massing against the west coast with one after another coming ashore with a flurry of precipitation that is both frightening and dangerous.

There are spot reports of power outages, trees falling on cars and houses, cars stalling in water, and families trapped temporarily in their homes because of rushing water.
image

The white marks snow coverage.

“The storm dropped 2.3 inches of rain in Los Angeles—an amount not seen in the dry valleys since 1921. By the time it reached California’s higher altitudes, the rain had turned to snow, dropping 9 feet (now two days later it’s 13 feet) of the white stuff on Mammoth Mountain. In the east, a high-pressure oscillation situated over Greenland has forced more Arctic air than usual down from Canada, creating unusual early winter conditions throughout the East—the same system that has brought blizzards to Britain and Scandinavia. A diminished regional high-pressure system over the central Pacific, which usually helps divert storms away from California and up into Washington and Oregon, means the West, too, is beginning to see some unusual weather, reports the Los Angeles Times.”

And now, after days of relentless rain, Southern California is awaiting the most intense storm system yet, where a monster storm was expected to bring torrential rain, thunderstorms, flooding, hail and possible tornadoes and water spouts. Forecasters warned of possible rainfall rates of .75 inch to 1 inch an hour and thunderstorm rates of 2 inches an hour in the region and predict this storm will march right across the entire continental United States.

Germany is brought to near standstill

by 12 hours of solid snowfall.

Climate change is obviously quickly taking on a new dimension in the northern hemisphere this autumn. After the record heat wave this summer, Russia’s weather seems to have acquired a taste for the extreme. Forecasters say this winter could be the coldest Europe has seen in the last 1,000 years. The change is reportedly connected to the speed of the Gulf Stream, which has shrunk in half in just the last couple of years. Polish scientists say that it means the stream will not be able to compensate for the cold from the Arctic winds. According to them, when the stream is completely stopped, a new Ice Age will begin in Europe. Some are saying that day has come and gone already, meaning Europe, at least, is in for some very big trouble. I reported a few weeks ago that indications are the stream has completely stopped in terms of completing its journey to Europe.

Americans Will Eat Fewer Tomatoes

Florida tomato growers are assessing the damage caused by this week’s below-freezing temperatures. Consecutive nights of unusually cold weather threatened produce growers across the state. In Hillsborough and Manatee counties, the results are severe. At Frank Diehl Farms in Wimauma, not a single tomato plant survived the bitter air. “They start breaking down and deteriorating like this,” Diehl explained to FOX 13, showing one of the countless destroyed tomatoes. “Then they won’t ripen, so you end up throwing them away.” The cold snap wiped out the entire tomato crop at Diehl’s farm. All 600 acres are destroyed; Diehl says nothing can be saved. “Our own operation, we’ve probably have lost 400,000 boxes,” he said.

Five nights of below freezing temperatures have severely damaged Florida’s 2010 sugarcane crop. Actually many crops have been hurt, damaged, or utterly destroyed and this is all food taken right out of the population’s collective stomach. Row crops across the state of Florida have been virtually wiped out. Not much about this though in the mainstream news.

So what’s going on with our world today? Bloomberg News says, “Earthquakes, heat waves, floods, volcanoes, super typhoons, blizzards, landslides, and droughts killed at least a quarter million people in 2010—the deadliest year in more than a generation. More people were killed worldwide by natural disasters this year than have been killed in terrorism attacks in the past 40 years combined.”

Prices are expected to increase due to inclement weather patterns influencing international commodity production and demand. Extreme cold snaps and heavy snowfall in Europe and the United States are increasing demand for oil and destroying or hurting crops; droughts and deluges in Australia are wreaking havoc on sugar and wheat production; Argentinean corn production is being threatened by weather patterns; and parts of China are expected to run short of oil and even coal in the coming winter months.

“Things” are getting more expensive. That is a fact.

Energy, metals, and the ‘softs’ (grains and cotton) are all headed higher both in the US and elsewhere across the world.

In India food inflation is taking off like a plane off a runway, and China is not far behind. India’s annual food inflation went up again for another week on the back of rising prices of fruits, vegetables, and milk and stood at 9.46 percent for the week ending 4 December. Food inflation was 8.60 percent in the previous week. This is the second consecutive week of rise in food inflation. While prices of rice rose by 1.47 percent, vegetables went up by one percent, milk by 17.76 percent, and fruits by 19.75 percent on an annual basis. Pulses and wheat prices declined by 4.24 percent and 11.46 percent, respectively. Onions became costlier by 29.93 percent on an annual basis.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has alerted developing countries about possible steep rises in food prices during 2011 but they have not warned citizens of the first world that even their access to food will be curtailed by a quick run-up in prices. According to FAO, “with the pressure on world prices of most commodities not abating, the international community must remain vigilant against further supply shocks in 2011.” World cereal production is likely to contract by two percent during 2010 and global cereal stocks may decline sharply. The price of sugar has reached a 30-year high while international prices of wheat increased by 12 percent in the first week of December 2010 as compared to their November average.

Collapse of cities and even societies is possible in the near future though almost no one anywhere is entertaining the idea that where they live today might not be livable in the near future. Ecosystems can and will fail. Predictably we will see failing infrastructure; food, water and fuel shortages, infectious disease, war, civil disobedience and conflict, and outright collapse of livable climate conditions. Extreme climatic events (including extreme rain events, floods) can do more to level humanity than nuclear attacks.

I received a call from a friend in Germany. She told me that it is a

complete disaster over there. They had just gotten buried yet again but

this time by one of the worst storms she can remember. This one dumped

50-60cm of snow. They are approaching five feet of snow for the month.

If December is repeated in January and then

February, March, and April you will not be

able to find these houses on this German street.

“Is it possible that everything we do is dwarfed by the moods of the star that gives life to the world? The Sun is incomparably vaster and more powerful than any work of man. We are forged from a few clods of solar dust. The Sun powers every plant and form of life, and one day the Sun will turn into a red giant and engulf us all. Then it will burn out. Then it will get very nippy indeed,” writes The Daily Telegraph.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/Thermohaline_Circulation_2.png

The Thermohaline Circulation (THC)

This “thermohaline (from the Greek words for heat and salt) circulation” is an important part of the Earth’s climate that includes not only currents at the tops of the oceans, such as the Gulf Stream, but also currents deep under the water. The system is global and includes water that sinks around Antarctica.

The North Atlantic is dominated by the Gulf Stream—currents that bring warm water north from the tropics. At around 40° north—the latitude of Portugal and New York—the current divides. Some water heads southwards in a surface current known as the subtropical gyre, while the rest continues north, leading to warming winds that raise European temperatures by 5°C to 10°C making Europe warmer than it would otherwise be.

The slowing down or stopping of these currents could result in catastrophic changes in the world’s climate. Seems like this is already happening as the Gulf loop, and now Gulf currents weaken, and miles above, even the Jet Stream seems to be affected, which perhaps is causing the strange phenomena in this next weather video.

It is not normal for storms to travel from the east coast back to the west. The Gulf Stream is part of a global system of ocean currents, which, the generally accepted theory says, is driven at least in part by salty, cold water sinking in the northern Atlantic. As the water sinks, more water flows north to replace it, which means if anything slows down the sinking, the Gulf Stream would slow down and maybe other currents would slow down.

Way back in 2005 scientists (Nature (vol 438, p 655)) were already finding problems with the Gulf Stream. A study of the ocean circulation in the North Atlantic found a 30% reduction in the warm currents that carry water north from the Gulf Stream. Harry Bryden at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK, whose group carried out the analysis five years ago, was not sure if the change is temporary or signals a long-term trend. Whatever was going on seems to have been exacerbated by the huge Gulf Oil spill and the unprecedented usage of dispersants that has had the effect of sinking the oil and affecting of destroying the gulf loop.

At this site there are several of these animations sourced from satellite data. One has to watch repeatedly to get a feel for the weakening current. This one above demonstrates real data from the last seven years.

What’s the bottom line? For the first time there are seven billion people on the planet and we have just reached, these past few years, what could be called peak agriculture. We are growing and consuming more food than ever. We were already heading downward in output, though, and world food stocks are shrinking dramatically. Even during these years of peak production the United Nations says a billion souls are going to go to bed hungry most nights. Now we are facing dramatic decreases of food production from climate change as well as rapid increases in prices.

The cold is coming on quicker than a rabbit can eat a row of carrots and even the big boys at the top of the human heap probably were taken by surprise. The movie is being made in the real world today and we all have to watch it until it catches up with us no matter where or who we are. Life is about to get a whole lot more difficult.

Special Note: Again my voice issues a strong warning and again I urge all who can to stock up on superfoods for survival do so. Rejuvenate, which I use in my concentrated nutritional medicine protocols, makes the best survival food one can imagine. It has a shelf life of approximately two to three years and can provide nourishment to the whole family in the best and worst of times. Green gold is actually better then the yellow stuff so please think seriously and plan for worst case scenarios. I have always called Spirulina green gold and most of the Rejuvenate products have spirulina and chlorella as well as a host of other organically sourced super food items.

Rothschild-Sponsored Third Party Effort Unveiled

American Free Press

By Michael Collins Piper

LATEST IN AN ONGOING SERIES

James Tisch

Yes, the Rothschild dynasty-connected billionaire families and financial groups who own the mass media in America—interlocked with the banking interests controlling privately owned Federal Reserve System that dominates the world economic system—are planning to spring a “centrist” third party on the American people.

All-new revelations now appearing in the self-styled “mainstream” press fully confirm what AMERICAN FREE PRESS—alone among the media—first asserted seven months ago in a four-page exclusive special report published in its May 31 issue.

The opinion pages of the two most powerful newspapers in America—The New York Times and The Washington Post—have been rife with repetitive rhetoric about the need for the American people to reject both “the left” and “the right” and stand behind “centrists,” who will “end partisan gridlock.” But there has also been—behind the scenes—an ongoing, long-standing, carefully crafted scheme to set a “centrist” party in

motion.

As AFP noted on Nov. 15, the first formal notice came in The New York Times on Oct. 3, when influential columnist Thomas L. Friedman, generally perceived as a “liberal,” noted grandly in a column entitled “Third Party Rising” that he knew of two separate efforts to launch such a “centrist” movement which he made clear was something he endorsed. Friedman tantalized readers by mentioning no specific names, but it was clear Friedman was writing from an “insider” standpoint.

On Nov. 28, writing in The Washington Post, Pulitzer Prize-winning “conservative” writer Kathleen Parker finally and formally lifted the veil of secrecy surrounding the third party venture in a commentary entitled, “Who will lead the centrists?” Her column revealed a new group, called “No Labels,” was being launched. Asserting “dissatisfaction with Washington’s systemic failings,” Ms. Parker wrote that “when the porridge is either too hot or too cold, the moment for something in between is ripe,” adding that “centrism has a place at the table by virtue of the sheer numbers of middle Americans, the depth of their disgust and the magnitude of our problems.”

Ms. Parker concluded that “There’s little appealing about either party dominated by a base that bears little resemblance to who we are as a nation or the way most of us live our lives. . . .” She then asked the question: “What if there were an alternative?” and added pointedly:

“All that’s missing from a centrist movement that could be formidable is a leader. Anyone?”

The Post columnist noted that among the key financial backers of No Labels is James Tisch. Although grass-roots Americans who might be attracted to a “third” party alternative probably don’t recognize his name, Tisch is a member of the billionaire family which grabbed control of the CBS media conglomerate in 1986, asserting its purpose was to ensure especially favorable coverage of Israel at a time of growing uneasiness with Israel’s Middle East intrigues.

An influential figure beyond question, Tisch has been president of the Jewish Communal Fund, was founding chairman of the Jewish Leadership Forum and serves on the executive committee of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the New York affiliate of the London-based Royal Institute of International Affairs, the foreign-policy-making arm of the Rothschild banking dynasty.

To underscore the importance of the No Labels venture, The Washington Post followed up Ms. Parker’s commentary by one published on Dec. 3 under the title “A grass-roots answer to gridlock,” written by two of the high-level founders of No Labels.

The two figures in question—a “liberal” Democrat and a “conservative” Republican—demonstrate the ostensible bipartisan (and distinctly internationalist) nature of the “centrist” effort: David Frum, a former special

assistant and speechwriter to President George W. Bush and William Galston, a former domestic policy advisor to Bill Clinton.

Frum—a neo-conservative pro-Israel hard-liner (and hardly a “centrist”)—is infamous for coining the term “Axis of Evil,” which he inserted into a speech he wrote for Dubya Bush, who popularized the phrase as part of the “war on terrorism.” But, more notably, Frum once published an extended attack on nationalists who reject American globalism and warmongering (which just happen to be the central components of the New World Order agenda).

Likewise, the ties of Frum’s No Labels colleague, Galston, further illustrate the origins of the “centrist” scheme being unleashed. Galston is now a courtier to the publicly little-known, but globally influential Rothschild- allied billionaire Zilkha family and holds the chair in “governance studies” at the Brookings Institution, a post funded by Baghdad-born New York-based Ezra Zilkha, another key figure in the Council on Foreign Relations.

The heir to Khedori Zilkha—once described by The New York Sun as “a towering figure who bestrode the financial landscape of the Middle East, Europe, America and Asia and became an important player in international

banking”—Ezra Zilkha was described by the Sun as “a living legend” in his own right, who assessed his own ancestry thusly: “My family were proud members of the Jewish community that Nebuchadnezzar established. When the Babylonian captivity ended and many Jews returned to Jerusalem, my ancestors stayed behind. I am always conscious of history. My sensibilities are rooted in antiquity.”

In their Post commentary, Galston and Frum announced that No Labels is engaged in organizing in every state and congressional district and that there will be a major national meeting held in New York on Dec. 13. They also revealed the underlying propaganda nature of their program. Over the next two years, No Labels operatives will be taking to task any and all who do not abide by their agenda. According to Galston and Frum:

They will highlight those officials who reach across the aisle to help solve the country’s problems and criticize those who do not. They will call out politicians whose rhetoric exacerbates those problems, and they will establish lines that no one should cross. Politicians, media personalities and opinion leaders who recklessly demonize their opponents should be on notice that they can no longer do so with impunity. . . .

In short, the purpose of No Labels will be to enforce a new “political correctness” enforced by public and media pressure, ensuring that anyone who goes beyond the approved “pale” and ventures into rhetoric and political discussion deemed unseemly will be held to account, subjected to widespread opprobrium.

For example, those who question the official government version of the 9-11 terrorist tragedy, or raise concerns about U.S. bias in favor of Israel in the conduct of Middle East policy, or object to unending budget-busting foreign military ventures, will be savaged as inimical to American national interests.

Frum and Galston claimed No Labels is “not a nascent third-party movement” nor a “stalking-horse for an independent candidacy” and that “it is not a front for anyone’s agenda.” However, the obvious political nature of the venture—which includes the formation of political action committee fundraising efforts—belies these protests. No Labels is clearly what it appears to be, another attempt to internationalize and bankrupt America with Israel coming out on top.

A review of the No Labels website at nolabels.com lists a growing array of “advisors” who constitute a broad-ranging selection of journalists, pundits and publicists— few nationally known but all of whom have outreach in their own particular realms. And this marks a movement that could be especially influential.

The clique of media voices promoting the “centrist” movement has been hyping rhetoric referencing “American national greatness” and “American exceptionalism”—which rings soundly in the hearts of patriotic Americans—but these are terms that have a deeper meaning than might appear.

In fact, these terms have their origins in the writings of a host of so-called “ex-Trotskyite” agitators—now called “neo-conservatives”—who have energetically worked to suppress traditional American nationalism in the effort to remake the United States into a globe-straddling empire with the blood and treasure of the American people used to set in place a New World Order. The “conservative” internationalists and the “liberal” internationalists have bound together to work to bring this into being, and the “centrist” endeavor is at the foundation of what can only be described as a conspiracy, vastly inimical to America’s interests.

TB spread in prisons, ups TB elsewhere

VERCELLI, Italy, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- The spread of tuberculosis in prisons increases the incidence of tuberculosis in the general population, researchers in Italy and Britain say.

Iacopo Baussano of the University Amedeo Avogadro in Italy and the Imperial College London and colleagues suggest improvements in prison TB control would not only help to protect prisoners and staff, it would help reduce national TB burdens.

Using data from previous studies and the World Health Organization, the study authors calculated the ratio between the incidence rates for TB and latent TB in prison and in the general population.

The average incidence of TB in prisons was 23 times higher than that of the general population, and for latent TB, was 26 times higher in prisons than in the general population.

The authors estimated the fraction of TB in the general population attributable to within-prison exposure to TB and found that, on average, one in 11 cases of TB in the general population was attributable to within-prison spread of TB.

"These data may prove useful to inform the development of rational policies to control TB transmission in correctional facilities," the study authors say in a statement. "Future studies should assess the population attributable risk of prison-to-community spread and describe the conditions in the prison that influence TB transmission."

The findings are published in the journal PLoS Medicine.

Pearland Man Pleads Guilty to Attempted Distribution of Child Pornography

Pearland Man Pleads Guilty to Attempted Distribution of Child Pornography

HOUSTON—William Scott Nelson, 63, of Pearland, Texas, has pleaded guilty to one count of attempted distribution of child pornography before U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison, United States Attorney José Angel Moreno announced today.

The investigation began on Feb. 3, 2009, when a Houston Police officer working with the Houston Metro Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force, accessed a file-sharing program. The officer saw that a computer had available for sharing 74 files, most of which appeared to be child pornography and some of which matched known child pornography images. The officer determined the computer was using an Internet service subscribed to William Scott Nelson at a residence in Pearland.

Files contained in the shared folder were available for anyone using a similar file sharing program to download at any time Nelson’s computer was logged on to the Internet. Officers determined that some of the videos available for sharing depicted prepubescent girls engaging in oral and vaginal sex with adult males.

A search warrant was prepared and executed on Aug. 5, 2009, at which time Nelson voluntarily went to the Pearland Police Department for an interview. During the search, officers recovered a computer, hard drives, a Kodak digital camera, and magazines that contained photos of nude juveniles and approximately 200 35 mm slides of a nude female juvenile. An examination of Nelson’s computer revealed that he had approximately 5,000 images and hundreds of videos downloaded to his computer and hard drives. The images included prepubescent females along with bondage, penetration, oral sex, and masturbation.

Nelson admitted to being a nudist and believing that photos of nude children were not wrong. Nelson also discussed how he searched for child pornography on the Internet and how he stored it and collected it over many years.

Nelson faces a minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment up to 20 years and a maximum fine of $250,000 as possible punishment at his sentencing, set for March 15, 2011. Upon completion of any prison term imposed, Nelson also faces a maximum of life on supervised release during which the court can impose a number of special conditions designed to protect children and prohibit the use of the Internet.

The charges against Nelson are the result of an investigation conducted by the Texas City office of the FBI, the Pearland and Houston Police Departments, and the Houston Metro Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force. Nelson was arrested in March 2010 on the federal charges and has been detained in custody since his arrest.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Stabe.
