Pope says abuse scandals 'devastating'

UPI POY 2009 - News and Features.

VATICAN CITY, Italy, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI says the ongoing sexual abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church had reached an unimaginable dimension, and the Church must take action.

In a Christmas message, the pope said the church must reflect on its failures, help the victims, and prevent potential pedophiles from becoming priests, The New York Times reported Monday.

"We must ask ourselves what we can do to repair as much as possible the injustice that transpired," the pope's message said. "We must ask ourselves what went wrong in our message, in our entire way of being Christians, so that such a thing could have occurred."

He and the Catholic Church were "devastated" by the extent of child abuse by priests, the pope said, and expressed his gratitude to those priests who helped the victims of the abuse, the ANSA news agency reported.

The Vatican has said it is developing guidelines for bishops around the world on how to handle abuse cases, including reporting incidents of abuse to civil authorities in countries where it is required.

"We are aware of the particular gravity of this sin committed by priests and our corresponding responsibility," the pope said.

Proposal would let states repeal fed laws

Proposal would let states repeal fed laws

WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- The people behind lawsuits seeking to undo the healthcare law say they're also backing an amendment that would allow states to repeal federal law.

Under the proposed "repeal amendment," any federal law or regulation could be repealed if two-thirds of state legislatures vote to do so, The New York Times reported.

First backed by Virginia lawmakers and Tea Party groups, the repeal amendment now has the support of legislative leaders in 12 states -- and incoming House majority leader, Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va. It was introduced earlier this month by Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah.

"Washington has grown far too large and has become far too intrusive, reaching into nearly every aspect of our lives," Cantor said. "The repeal amendment would provide a check on the ever-expanding federal government ... and get the government working for the people again, not the other way around."

Randy Barnett, a Georgetown University law professor who helped draft the amendment, told the Times it could win ratification -- which includes passage by Congress plus 38 state legislatures.

"This is something state legislatures have an interest in pursuing," Barnett said, "because it helps them fend off federal encroachment and gives them a seat at the table when Congress is proposing what to do."

He said he was contacted by Tea Party groups in Virginia. Then Virginia's governor, attorney general and speaker of the House, all Republicans, expressed support.

Sanford Levinson, a constitutional law professor at the University of Texas, said the proposal would give the same weight to small states as large ones, allowing those with a relatively small proportion of the national population to have influence.

"You can bet the ranch that there are enough state legislators in the large states who will not consider it a good idea to reinforce the power of small parochial rural states in which most Americans do not live," Levinson said.

Hundreds arrested in election protests

Hundreds arrested in election protests

MINSK, Belarus, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Police in Belarus arrested hundreds of demonstrators, including presidential candidates, who protested presidential election results, observers said Monday.

Witnesses said dozens of protesters were injured in clashes after being beaten with batons

Seven presidential candidates were arrested as they protested the results of Sunday's elections in which incumbent Alexander Lukashenko was declared the winner, the BBC reported.

Official results announced Monday gave Lukashenko 79.7 percent of the vote.

Several hundred people were detained when police broke up a demonstration involving at least 10,000 anti-Lukashenko protesters in Minsk, police spokesman Konstantin Shalkevich said. Demonstrators tried to storm a government building but were turned back by riot police.

Reports indicate seven of the nine presidential candidates were among those arrested, the BBC said. Witnesses said opposition candidate Vladimir Neklyaev was removed from a hospital where he was being treated after having been beaten by police.

The United States condemned methods the Belarusian government employed to "undermine the democratic process and use disproportionate force against political activists, civil society representatives and journalists, and we call for the immediate release of all presidential candidates and the hundreds of protesters who were detained" Sunday and Monday, the White House said in a statement.

The United States can't accept the announced results of the presidential election "as legitimate," the statement said.

"We are also concerned by indications that independent Internet media have been disrupted and call on the government of Belarus to take measures to protect its citizens' right to free media," the White House said.

Recalling the U.S.-Belarus Joint Statement from Dec. 1, the White House said further development of relations is contingent on Belarus's respect for human rights and the democratic process.

"The actions taken over the last 24 hours, however, are a clear step backwards on issues central to our relationship with Belarus," the statement said.

Amnesty International denounced the use of force.

"The events of the last 24 hours obliterate the fragile signs of openness in the runup to the presidential election," said Heather McGill, the group's expert on Belarus. "The Belarusian authorities must investigate all allegations of disproportionate use of force."

2 children found dead in Edmonton

EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A man was in custody Monday, the day after two children who were under government supervision were found dead in an Edmonton, Alberta, home, police said.

The names of the young boy and girl and the 31-year-old man, who had non-life threatening injuries, were not being released pending autopsies on the children, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Edmonton police found the children's bodies after being called to a townhouse at 11:30 p.m. Sunday to check on the welfare of its occupants, the CBC said.

The Edmonton Sun reported a Children and Youth Services spokesman said the children were "under our care" when they were killed.

"It is very sad, a tragedy," Sam Tarabain, a neighbor, said.

"They have not been here long. My children have not played with them."

Another neighbor, Patricia Antony, said the family had seemed peculiar, the newspaper said.

"They never used the front door and covered the windows, I've never seen them," Antony said.

"This is the first time something like this has happened. We have had small things but never a situation like this."

Chaput Throws Weight Behind DREAM Act

Chaput Throws Weight Behind DREAM Act

This article comes from the Catholic News Agency.
Archbishop Chaput lends his support to the DREAM Act

Washington D.C., Dec 17, 2010 / 07:24 pm (CNA).- Archbishop Charles J. Chaput joined his brother bishops in expressing support for the controversial DREAM Act – a bill that would grant citizenship to many children brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents. The bill is expected to be voted on by the Senate on Dec. 18.

Joining coadjutor Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles in endorsing the legislation, Archbishop Chaput issued a statement on Dec. 17 urging Catholics to contact their local lawmakers to vote in favor of the measure.

The act's full title is the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act. It would allow young people who entered the United States before the age of 16 to apply for legal permanent residence and eventual citizenship, as long as they have finished high school, have no criminal record, have lived in the U.S. for more than five years and have completed two years of college or military service.

While Democrats largely support the measure, Republicans have criticized it for encouraging illegal immigrants to bring their children across unsecured borders. The House has already passed the act, but the Senate vote on Saturday is expected to be close.

Archbishop Chaput said the bill “is about fairness to high school graduates who were brought to this country unlawfully through no fault of their own, since they came with their parents.”

He added that those who would benefit from the act are “talented, intelligent and dedicated young persons who know only the United States as their home.”

He called the bill “a practical, fair and compassionate solution for thousands of young persons in our nation who simply want to reach their God-given potential and contribute to the well-being of our nation.”

“This important piece of legislation is critical for the lives and hopes of thousands of young people across America,” the Denver archbishop said, urging people to contact their federal senators and representatives. Voting in favor of the act “is the right and just thing to do,” he said.

Adding to Archbishop Chaput's support of the bill, several U.S. bishops held a teleconference on Dec. 17 urging Congress to pass the legislation.

Those who participated in the conference included: Cardinal Roger Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles, Archbishop Gomez, Bishop John C. Wester of Salt Lake City and Bishop Edward J. Burns of Juneau, Alaska.

Benedict Calls for a "New Class of Intellectuals"

Benedict Calls for a "New Class of Intellectuals"

This article comes from Zenit.
Benedict XVI Calls for New Class of Intellectuals

Delivers Christmas Greeting to Rome's University Students

VATICAN CITY, DEC. 19, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Italy needs "a new class of intellectuals," according to Benedict XVI.

The Pope said this Thursday in his annual pre-Christmas gathering with Rome's university students, held in St. Peter's Basilica. Some 5,000 students and professors from the universities of Rome attended the event, which was begun by John Paul II in 1979. Also present was the Holy Father's vicar for Rome, Cardinal Agostino Cardinal Vallini.

In his homily, Benedict XVI underscored the necessity of profound educational action and a continual discernment, which "must involve the whole academic community, promoting that synthesis between intellectual formation, moral discipline and religious commitment."

"In our times," he stressed, "one sees the need for a new class of intellectuals who are able to interpret social and cultural dynamics and offer solutions that are not abstract but concrete and realistic. The university is called to play this irreplaceable role and the Church is its convinced and active supporter."

At the beginning of the celebration, Renato Lauro, rector of the University of Rome "Tor Vergata," addressed a brief word of greeting to the Pontiff, emphasizing that "believing is not opposed to thinking and intellectual commitment, but it demands it and employs it in a new way with other motivations, as the past 2,000 years of the history of the West have demonstrated through philosophers, theologians, artists and men of science who were profound believers."

In his homily, Benedict XVI invited those presence to fix their gaze upon the stable of Bethlehem and to set out on that path to the Lord who was born to free "the heart from every ferment of intolerance and false expectation," which can always develop if one forgets "that God has already come, he is already at work in our history" and "he asks to be heard."

"Returning there, to that humble and august place, is not a merely ideal journey," he warned, "it is the journey that we are called to take experiencing today God’s nearness and his action that renews and sustains our existence."

"We too must travel to Bethlehem," he encouraged them, "with our gaze turned to God who is patient and faithful, who knows how to wait, who knows how to pause, who knows how to respect the seasons of our existence. That child who we will meet is the full manifestation of the mystery of the love of God, who loves, giving his life, who loves in a disinterested way, who teaches us to love and only asks to be loved."

At the conclusion of the prayer event, a delegation of African university students handed over the icon of Mary Sedes Sapientiae to a group of Spanish students, symbolically initiating the pilgrimage of the icon through all of Spain’s universities ahead of the 26th World Youth Day that will take place in Madrid in August 2011.

Sex and Soup

By Greg Stier|Christian Post Guest Columnist

“Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.” Genesis 25:34

You know the story. Esau was hungry so he sold his invisible birthright to his little brother for a steaming bowl of lentil soup.

It better have been yummy.

To help you realize the significance of this you should understand that, in this culture, being the firstborn son meant you inherited the lion’s share of blessings from your dying daddy. If he had land you got most of it. If he had sheep you got most of them. The rest of the brothers got whatever was leftover.

Suffice it to say, it was way more fun being son number one.

Esau knew this when he came in from a long day of hunting and just had to have a bowl of his brother’s mouth-watering stew. Jacob bargained with him for the ultimate one-sided swap, his soup for Esau’s birthright. “Throw in a piece of bread and you got yourself a deal Jacob!”Esau negotiated. “Done!” said Jacob with a twisted smile.

The younger sibling knew what this birthright was worth, while Esau had no idea or, at the very minimum, didn’t value it. With every spoonful of delicious soup that made its way into Esau’s mouth and down his throat, his rightful blessings were making their way out of his future and down the toilet.

Which brings us to our subject of sex and soup. Hebrews 12:16 makes the not-so-subtle love connection between this unlikely couple, “See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.”

This verse makes it abundantly clear that the temptation of sexual immorality is just like a bowl of hot, steaming stew waiting to steal a believer’s birthright.

What is this birthright? 1 Peter 1:3,4 gives us a powerful glimpse into its worth, “In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you….”

Hot sex with someone (other than your spouse of course!) may be tasty for a moment, but it has lasting and devastating consequences. Not only is the pipeline of God’s blessing cut off in this life, but the unimaginable inheritance God has reserved for us in the next life shrinks.

The writer of Hebrews goes on to say this about Esau’s not-so-great soup exchange, “Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done.” Hebrews 12:17

Esau mourned when he realized that his dying daddy had no blessing for him because he had sold it to his brother for a quickie lunch. We too will mourn when we realize the full implications of selling our sanctification for a bowlful of lust…devastated marriages, dysfunctional families and destroyed lives.

And that’s just on this side of eternity.

As a traveling evangelist I am very aware of the temptations that are on the road. From airports to hotel lobbies to late dinners at Chili’s, a pretty woman is difficult not to notice. So, whenever I see one, I try to remember Esau and his bowl of stew. I try to remember the birthright I would exchange for a small bowl of instant gratification. I remind myself of the wife and kids God has blessed me with on this side of eternity and the blessings God is reserving me on the other side.

The trade is just not worth it.
