The Developing Image of the Beast

I shall read two astounding statements that should stimulate every Seventh-day Adventist to speedily prepare for the enactment of the image of the beast in America, as foretold in Revelation 13. The first quote is taken from The Washington Times of April 16, 2001, p.A02. “In 1960 John Kennedy went from Washington to Texas to assure Protestant preachers that he would not obey the Pope. In 2001 George Bush came from Texas up to Washington to assure a group of Catholic bishops that he would obey the Pope.” And what did John Kennedy get for his honesty and true leadership? – A bullet in the head.

The second quote is taken from the Catholic paper called Peter’s Voice. It reveals the same determination by President George W. Bush to obey the Pope. In his speech, given during the opening of the John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, Bush said, “The best way to honor Pope John Paul II, truly one of the great men, is to take his teachings seriously; to listen to his words, and put his words and teachings into action here in America.” And what has George Bush to gain from such a promise? – Approval and support from the Papacy in the development of an image to the beast.

This brings to mind the warning from the Holy Spirit through His servant, Ellen White, when she wrote in Testimonies for the Church, Volume 1, p. 451, “When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with spiritualism, [then], under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehood and delusions.”

Let us pray. Our loving Father, we have learned that the President of the greatest Protestant nation on earth is committed to surrender Protestantism to Catholic doctrine. We are about to be plunged into the affliction and distress of Jacob’s Trouble. We pray that Thou wilt give us the fullness of Thy Holy Spirit, that we may seize the remaining freedom that we still have to prepare for the final conflict. In the name of Jesus, we ask, Amen.

This sermon is based on God’s word found in Revelation 13:11-18. “And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,

“And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

“And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”

The purpose of this study is to reveal the notable trends now taking place in the United States of America in the development of an image to the beast. We must know what to expect when the image becomes fully developed. I do not have time in this presentation to give full proof as to who the beast and his image is. The details are clearly presented in my book The Antichrist , in which each of the following inspired indictments are proven, revealing that the papal power is the beast of Revelation 13. And the United States of America is to become the image of the beast.

I will list twelve indisputable Bible facts as to who the beast is.

1. It was to arise among ten divisions of the Roman empire (Daniel 7:8).

2. It was to destroy three of the ten kingdoms (Daniel 7:8).

3. It would speak great words against the most high (Daniel 7:25; Revelation 13:6).

4. It would wear out the saints of the Most High (Daniel 7:25; Revelation 13:7).

5. It would be guilty of blasphemy (Revelation 13:6, Daniel 7:25).

6. It would attempt to change the divine law of God (Daniel 7:25).

7. It would exercise its power over all kindreds, tongues and nations (Revelation 13:7).

8. The dragon would give him his power, his seat, and his great authority to this beast (Revelation 13:2).

9. It was to continue in world domination for a period of 1260 years (Revelation 13:5; Daniel 7:25).

10. It would then receive a mortal wound (Revelation 13:3).

11. It would amaze the whole world for its deadly wound would be healed (Revelation 13:30).

12. This beast has a mark of its authority. Anyone who refuses to honor this mark will be persecuted and finally sentenced to death. (Revelation 13:15-18).

We are also given the following identification of the image of the beast: It must appear among the nations of the world as a world power when the deadly wound was inflicted in 1798 (Revelation 13:10, 11). Unlike all previous world powers ruling over nations and peoples, this image must begin to develop in a region of the world where no civilization existed (Revelation 13:11). The image would begin with dual power symbolized by its two horns representing a government of Republicanism and Protestantism (Revelation 13:11). But the image would change its form of government, and the laws providing individual freedom, to that of a government based on the power of the dragon in which the world would once more be forced to obey the antichrist or be killed (Revelation 13:11,15). And to remove any possible doubt God has given us the number 666 which identifies the beast to which the image is to be made (Revelation 13:18).

At this point it would be well to examine the dictatorial power of the beast which the world experienced during the Dark Ages for some 1260 years under the iron hand of the papacy. Divine inspiration has revealed that the image of the beast will force the people of the world to once again live as subjects of this beast power under which all freedoms will be revoked until Jesus comes.

First, let us consider what the daily life was like during the Dark Ages of the papal rule. We shall start with how this evil power came into existence. I’m going to quote from the papacy, which tells us as follows: “Long ages ago, when Rome, through the neglect of the western emperors, was left to the mercy of the barbarous hoards, the Romans turned to one figure for aid and protection and asked him to rule them. And thus, in this simple manner the best title of all to kingly right commenced the temporal sovereignty of the popes. And meekly stepping to the throne of the Caesar, the Vicar of Christ took up the scepter to which the emperors and kings of Europe were to bow in reverence through so many ages.” James P. Conroy in The American Catholic Quarterly Review of April, 1911.

As a result of this power, and her attempt to force everyone to accept the teachings of the state church, Europe was bathed continually in a wave of persecution. History has recorded these conditions for us as follows: “The horrors of the Inquisition, ordered and maintained by the popes over a period of 500 years in which unnumbered millions were tortured and burned, constitute the most brutal, beastly and devilish picture in all history.” Halley’s Bible Handbook , printed in Grand Rapids, MI by Zondervan Publishing House in 1965, p. 731, 732.

This beast power that ruled the world is seen today in a vastly different light than now professed, as you read this letter written by Pope Nicholas in the year 1860, to the king of Bulgaria. “A king need not fear to command massacres when these will retain his subjects in obedience, or cause them to submit to the faith of Christ, and God will reward him in this world and in eternal life for these murders. We order you, in the name of religion, to invade his states, burn his cities and massacre his people.” This letter was taken from the book A Woman Rides the Beast by Dave Hunt, printed in Eugene, Oregon by the Harvest House Publishers in 1994, p. 153.

In the book Great Controversy p. 234 – 236 inspiration reveals the following, “The first triumphs of the Reformation past, Rome summoned new forces, hoping to accomplish its destruction. At this time the order of the Jesuits was created, the most cruel, unscrupulous, and powerful of all the champions of popery. Cut off from earthly ties and human interests, dead to the claims of natural affection, reason and conscience wholly silenced, they knew no rule, no tie, but that of their order, and no duty but to extend its power….There was no crime too great for them to commit, no deception too base for them to practice, no disguise too difficult for them to assume. Vowed to perpetual poverty and humility, it was their studied aim to secure wealth and power, to be devoted to the overthrow of Protestantism, and the reestablishment of papal supremacy. When appearing as members of their order, they wore a garb of sanctity,…but under this blameless exterior the most criminal and deadly purposes were often concealed.

“It was a fundamental principle of the order that the end justified the means. By this code, lying, theft, perjury, assassinations, were not only pardonable but commendable, when they served the interest of the church. Under various disguises the Jesuits worked their way into offices of state, climbing up to be the counselors of kings, and shaping the policy of nations. They became servants to act as spies upon their masters….The Jesuits rapidly spread themselves over Europe, and wherever they went, there followed a revival of popery. To give them greater power, a bull was issued re-establishing the inquisition…and atrocities too terrible to bear the light of day were repeated in its secret dungeons….Such were the means which Rome had invoked to quench the light of the Reformation, to withdraw from men the Bible, and to restore the ignorance and superstition of the Dark Ages.”

As the Reformation developed so also the persecution of Protestants increased. Life became so terrible under the Jesuits of Rome that many people decided to flee from Europe to another country. Thus we find the Pilgrim fathers fleeing to America, to a land where they hoped to find the freedom their hearts longed for.

We read in Revelation 13:11 concerning America’s rise to world power, “I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb.” This new world power, the United States, was represented as having two horns like a lamb. Throughout the Bible, horns stand for power and kingdoms, but these lamb-like horns were uncrowned. When our Pilgrim fathers landed here and began to build a government they saw to it that it was different than those of Europe. They founded the government of the United States of America on the Christian principles of civil and religious freedom. Church and state were to be separated. This is the secret of democracy. What the world had not seen for centuries was a state without a king and a church without a pope. Republicanism and Protestantism were the foundations of this country.

Ellen White had this to say, “The lamb-like horns indicate youth, innocence, and gentleness, fitly representing the character of the United States when presented to the prophet as ‘coming up’ in 1798…. Republicanism and Protestantism became the fundamental principles of the nation. These principles are the secret of its power and prosperity. The oppressed and down-trodden throughout Christendom have turned to this land with interest and hope. Millions have sought its shores, and the United States has risen to a place among the most powerful nations of the earth.” Great Controversy p. 441.

The Constitution of the United States guarantees these great concepts. Let me briefly review the facts. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Declaration of Independence. “The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government.” Article 4. Section 4 of The Constitution of the United States . “No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” Article 6. The First Amendment provides further guarantees of freedom. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Bill of Rights Article 1.

But now consider this: What I am about to say sounds unbelievable but it is a fact. The papal church hates the Constitution of the United States for it is contrary to every political aim of the papacy. In the book Fifty Years in the Church of Rome , p. 284, Charles Chiniquy, a former priest, in seven statements he clearly reveals the papal differences from that of the government of the United States. And furthermore, what the Vatican plans to do when she seizes control of America. Listen carefully:

1. The most sacred principles of the United States Constitution is the equality of every citizen before the law, but the fundamental principle of the Church of Rome is the denial of that equality.

2. Liberty of conscience is proclaimed by the United States; a most sacred principle which every citizen must uphold even at the price of his blood. But liberty of conscience is declared by all the popes and councils of Rome as a most godless, unholy and diabolical thing which every good Catholic must abhor and destroy at any cost.

3. The American constitution assures the absolute independence of the civil from the ecclesiastical (or church) power. But the Church of Rome declares through all her pontiffs and councils that such independence is an impiety and a revolt against God.

4. The American constitution leaves every man free to serve God according to the dictates of his conscience. But the Church of Rome declares that no man has ever had such a right, and that the pope alone can know and say what man must believe and do.

5. The constitution of the United States denies the right to anybody to punish any other for differing from him in religion. But the Church of Rome says that she has the right to punish, with the confiscation of their goods or the penalty of death, those who differ in faith from the pope.

6. The United States have established schools all over immense territories where they invite the people to send their children that they may cultivate their intelligence and become good and useful citizens. But the Church of Rome has publicly stated that these schools are forbidden and children attend them under pain of excommunication in this world and damnation in the next.

7. The constitution of the United States is based on the principle that the people are the primary source of all civil power. But hundreds of times the Church of Rome has proclaimed that this principle is impious and heretical. She says all governments must rest upon the foundation of the Catholic faith with the pope alone as the legitimate and infallible source and interpreter of the law.

By now I trust you have become fully awake for there is no question as to the intent of the papacy as we read the following unimpeachable documents from which I quote. “The Church is, of necessity, intolerant. Heresy she endures when and where she must, but she hates it and directs all her energy to destroy it. If Catholics ever gain a sufficient, numerical majority in this country religious freedom is at an end. So our enemies say, so we believe.” The Shepherd of the Valley ,the official journal of the Bishop of St. Louis, on November 23, 1851. Again, “No man has a right to choose his religion.” New York Freedom , official journal of the Bishop Hughes, January 26, 1852. I continue, “The church does not, and cannot accept, or in any degree favor liberty in the Protestant sense of liberty.” The Catholic World , April 1870.

I hope you are beginning to think this through carefully. Note, the Vatican condemned the Declaration of Independence as wickedness and called the Constitution of the United States a “satanic document.” (Taken from the book, Footprints of the Jesuits by R. W. Thompson in New York, printed by Hunt and Eaton in 1894 p. 146.)

This great statesman and patriot, Richard W. Thompson, was at that time the Secretary of the Navy of the United States. In his admirable work The Papacy and Civil Power , in which he states, “Nothing is plainer than this. If the principles of the Church of Rome prevail here our Constitution would necessarily fall; the two cannot exist together.”

Then from The Freedom’s Journal, the official journal of the Bishop of New York, we read, “We will rule the United States and lay them at the feet of the Vicar of Jesus Christ that he may put an end to their godless system of education, and impious laws of liberty of conscience which are an insult to God and man.”

Now these quotations reveal the real purpose of papal power in their determination to control America. I again quote from the ex-Secretary of the United States Navy in his book Footprints of the Jesuits , p. 29. “They believe that the conditions of mankind during the Middle Ages, (that the pope’s Dark Ages) staggering under the weight of feudal oppression, were preferable to modern progress and enlightenment; that human happiness would be promoted by a return to that period.” What astounding information! Can you imagine the plans of the Vatican to change our way of life to that of the Dark Ages? No wonder the Bible describes what is to come in this world as ‘a time of trouble such as never was.’ Daniel 12:1.

Now I want you to join with me in some very serious thinking about the developing of this power here in America. The beginning of the formation of the image to the beast started when Ronald Reagan was president and he sent an ambassador from the United States to the Vatican. Consider this quote, “The appointment of the pope’s nuncio (that’s an ambassador) to Washington as a result of the high treason of President Ronald Reagan, informally recognizing the sovereign state of the Vatican City, in 1984, with Knight of Malta, William Wilson, being the first legal ambassador to the Vatican since America severed all relations in 1867 as a result of the Jesuit black hand in the Lincoln assassination, could be compared to the instillation of a foreign general obeying orders of the head of an aggressive alien state. The nuncio will also become the arbitrator between the two major political parties of America. Both Republican and Democratic parties, from now on, must be extremely attentive to the reaction of the papal nuncio. Political wooing would be done at the papal nunciature in Washington, the political center of the Catholic Church in the United States. Politically she is looming ever larger at the White House. She is a power in the Senate, a force at the Pentagon, an invisible secret agent at the FBI, the most subtle, intangible, prime mover of the US wheel within a wheel, the Central Intelligence Agency.” The Vatican Moscow Washington Alliance by Avro Manhattan, 1986, p. 353, 354.

We have been told by inspiration that the last movements will be rapid ones. Any Bible student must be amazed as George Bush started his presidential campaign by a papal visit to the Pope. Five days after election to office, President Bush paid a visit to Washington Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick. Next he flies to Miami to visit Archbishop John Favalora, then back to Pittsburgh to see Bishop Donald Wood, and then to Philadelphia so he could visit Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, then swinging to St. Louis for a visit to Archbishop Justin Rigali.

But that’s not all. On his first trip to New York he awards the Congressional gold metal to the late Cardinal John O’Connor and later that month Bush meets with Pope John Paul II the second time. How amazing the actions of our president of the greatest Protestant nation on earth. On March 21 Bush entertained more than 120 Catholic leaders in the East Room of the White House. The next day he surrounded himself with cardinals, reaffirmed his opposition to abortion and he presided over the ribbon-cutting at the museum named for Pope John Paul II. I ask you, are you getting the picture? Is it any wonder that I could hardly believe my eyes when I read President Bush’s words, “The best way to honor Pope John Paul II is to listen to his words and put his words and teachings into action here in America.”

What did the scriptures state in Revelation 13:14 concerning the United States of America? – “That they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.” At this point it would be well to see how the emerging image to the beast has reacted to the recent terrorist attack in New York City. Immediately after the terrorist attack on September 11 in New York City a declaration of war was supported by all but one member of Congress, with 24 standing ovations during President Bush’s speech to the joint members of Congress. The president did not call on Congress to declare war, he did this himself, and declared it will be a long and difficult war.

In the light of Revelation 13 you must be amazed that the image has now reached such power that its word is almost law to most of the nations of the world. Immediately Saudi Arabia and the United Arab countries severed diplomatic relations with Afghanistan. Even nations considered as our enemies, such as China and Russia, joined in the coalition. All nations on earth were challenged to join the United States or suffer the consequences.

Financial institutions were commanded by President Bush to cease all dealings with the terrorists and their organizations. Every nation was commanded to do so, or they would be cut off from the world’s largest economy. The seven richest nations of the world complied, revealing that the image has now become so powerful that its word is law to which every nation on earth must follow. President Bush implied such power when he said, “Either you are with us or you are with the terrorists.”

It is also apparent that the citizens of the United States are now ready to sacrifice their civil liberties to win this war. Attorney General John Ashcroft of the Justice Department has asked congress for greater power which can only mean the people will lose much of their liberty. Ellen White clearly states that the time would come when every article of the Constitution would be made void.

From the recent Remnant Herald of November, 2001 I quote the following, “In his video, ‘Prophecy and the New Times’ (that’s in 1997) Ted Flynn, the Roman Catholic devotee of Mary, reported that in an apparition Mary stated that terrible disasters were about to strike America. She stated that they were the result of sin and that the only solution was for Americans to return to God. The solution offered was to close all shops on Sunday, to ban sporting fixtures on Sunday, to attend Mass and Confession, and to say the Rosary.”

Make no mistake, such deceptions of Satan will play a pivotal role in turning secular mankind to religion but they will not sanctify the soul. A religious zeal will ensue. How easily this will generate Sunday laws as a means of regaining divine favor. Such religious zealots, unsanctified in heart, will not hesitate to persecute faithful seventh-day keepers in a vain effort to restore security and prosperity. Already the United States Supreme Court in 1961 by an 8-1 decision ruled that Sunday laws do not violate the First Amendment of the US Constitution which guarantees religious liberty. (See Warren Johns , Dateline Sunday USA , Pacific Press, 1967, p. 119 – 159.)

In 1990, the Supreme Court by a 5-4 majority in the case of Smith vs. the State of Oregon “went far beyond the case and declared that when religious rights clash with the government’s need for uniform rules, the court will side with the government.” Los Angeles Times , April 18, 1990. Anyone can see day by day the fulfilling of Revelation 13: 15-17. Surely the image to the beast is beginning to flex its muscle.

Never were the words of the Spirit of Prophecy so meaningful. “The nations are in unrest. Times of perplexity are upon us. Men’s hearts are failing them for fear of the things that are coming upon the earth. But those who believe in God will hear His voice amid the storm, saying, ‘It is I; be not afraid.’” Signs of the Times , October 9, 1901. Inspiration warns us of what is soon to take place. “The tempest is coming, and we must get ready for its fury by having repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord will arise to shake terribly the earth. We shall see troubles on all sides. Thousands of ships will be hurled into the depths of the sea. Navies will go down, and human lives will be sacrificed by millions. Fires will break out unexpectedly, and no human effort will be able to quench them. The palaces of earth will be swept away in the fury of the flames. Disasters by rail will become more and more frequent; confusion, collision, and death without a moment’s warning will occur on the great lines of travel. The end is near, probation is closing. Oh let us seek God while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near!” Messages to Young People p. 89, 90.

“In the last scenes of this earth’s history, war will rage. There will be pestilence, plague, and famine. The waters of the deep will overflow their boundaries. Properties and life will be destroyed by fire and flood. We should be preparing for the mansions that Christ has gone to prepare for them that love Him.” Maranatha p. 174.

“The end is near, and every city is to be turned upside down every way. There will be confusion in every city. Everything that can be shaken is to be shaken, and we do not know what will come next. The judgments will be according to the wickedness of the people and the light of truth that they have had.” Manuscripts 1, p. 248, 249. “O that God’s people had a sense of the impending destruction of thousands of cities, now almost given to idolatry.” Evangelism p. 29. While God is holding back the winds of strife, let us work with greater diligence and sacrifice for our Lord. “In the great closing work we shall meet with perplexities that we know not how to deal with, but let us not forget that the three great powers of heaven are working, that a divine hand is on the wheel, and that God will bring His purposes to pass.” Evangelism p. 65.

“I asked my accompanying angel the meaning of what I had heard, and what the four angels were about to do. He said to me that it was God that restrained the powers, and that He gave His angels charge over things on the earth; that the four angels had power from God to hold the four winds, and that they were about to let them go; but while their hands were loosening, and the four winds were about to blow, the merciful eye of Jesus gazed on the remnant that were not sealed, and He raised His hands to the Father and pleaded with Him that He had spilled His blood for them. Then another angel was commissioned to fly swiftly to the four angels and bid them hold, until the servants of God were sealed with the seal of the living God in their foreheads.” Early Writings p. 38.

“My dear brethren and sisters, let the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ be in your minds continually and let them crowd out worldly thoughts and cares. When you lie down and when you rise up, let them be your meditation. Live and act wholly in reference to the coming of the Son of man. The sealing time is very short and will soon be over. Now is the time, while the four angels are holding the four winds, to make our calling and election sure.” Early Writings p. 58.

Let us pray, Our loving Father, as we see the image of the beast actually forming before our eyes, give us courage to be faithful and to daily be ready for the final test. In the name of Jesus, we ask, Amen.

Gays - All That Glitters Isn't Gold (Part 2)


The gay bar scene or high risk promiscuous sex... Is
it so happy-go-lucky? Something so sweet and wonderful we'd "wish you
were here?" Or is it actually something you wouldn't wish upon your
worst enemy?


Is it simply a matter of being well-adjusted? Or
resigned?
What's so gay about it all anyway? Who ever dreamed up that label? What
about truth in advertising? Some want their money back. Were they sold
a line? Is homosexuality a victimless crime? What about their minds?
Aren't they victimized? When they refuse to even "think straight" -
aren't they denying themselves the opportunity to change? After all,
isn't the brain the biggest sex organ?


God has provided for
proper sexual satisfaction in marriage; but there's always that allure
of the unknown, the forbidden zone. It arouses our curiosity, attempts
to lower our resistance, and seduces our weakened will. In such a
state, intoxicated with lust, we could engage in a deadly liaison and
only discover later what a fatal attraction it really was (Prov. 5:11).
"You play, you pay" (Prov. 6:27). Don't let a one-night stand be your
fall. But isn't that the main purpose for going out to the bars? And if
there's any such thing as gay community centers, they'd have to be THE
BARS! They're the familiar haunts, pick-up joints, and popular
retreats; everything from your local dive to those pulsating places
that are practically cities under a roof - something for everyone.


The
bars - hallowed be their names - are a place to go when you're bored, a
welcoming-wagon for the new kids on the meat block, and somewhere to
let your hair down and unwind, enjoying the company of your substitute
family. The promiscuous gay lifestyle definitely revolves around these
dark dens of
iniquity. Such a polluted environment naturally encourages drug and
alcohol abuse ("communion"), sexual abuse in a casual way with careless
partners ("confirmation"), and verbal abuse (Prov. 4:24) in an overflow
of raunchy talk ("fellowship") and gossip - jes' dishin' the dirt....


"Out" On the Town


Your
first experience "out" on the town (with the boys) could be
exhilarating - or bizarre! You might see wonderful men dressed to kill,
or hunks in tank tops and T shirts; enter a wet jock-strap contest or
watch gyrating male strippers, or view the make-believe world of
make-up queens trying to steal the show, a different person on
stage.... Then there's the games people play, the vicious backbiting
and hair-pulling of the young and breastless, or the S & M
(stand
& modeling) crowd who love themselves and lots of mirrors.
Quite a
carnival atmosphere.


But it kind of puts a damper on your
evening's fun when you go into bars and find yourself greeted by
pornographic posters (trying to get across the point about "safe-sex"),
or see a fishbowl or platter filled with assorted colors of
"life-savers" (condoms); or to order yourself a strong drink and notice
AIDS
donation jars staring you down: L'Chaim
suddenly becomes more
personal. And then there's the endless ads in all the gay mags about
HIV testing, "understanding doctors" who'll screen you in private,
surgically remove your hemorrhoids, laser your anal warts, counsel you
about your problems, ad nauseum. Makes you eager to jump in bed, eh? Or
run scared! But welcome to the real world - the good, the bad, and the
ugly. But jump from bed to bed until we all drop dead? Is that what
life's all about?


Isn't it stupid to keep playing this deadly
game (of Russian roulette) until someone doesn't shoot blanks? DEATHBED
takes on a whole new meaning. The next time you want to get "laid" -
hope that it's not in a grave! So what if you can trick with every Tom,
Dick, and Harry if you become just another name on the AIDS quilt (a
"grave-blanket"). Don't sell yourself short (John 8:36; Heb. 12:16).


Eventually,
the wear and tear, the abuse of your mind and body, is going to take
its expensive toll. All of the cheap, mechanical, meaningless,
sexploitation has got to affect you. How could you not become
desensitized? If you deviate from the strait and narrow, how can you
not get lost? If you forget or pervert the original purpose of sex, how
can you escape confusion? You'll condemn yourself to wander in your
sexual bewilderment, experimenting with everything since "anything
goes."


Look around you the next time you go out (if you haven't
had enough of that tired crowd and empty scene). From drag-queens to
muscle men, welfare alcoholics to executives on cocaine; the homosexual
world is as diverse and perverse as the "straight" world. Some men
acting like women, some women acting like men; worlds in collision, an
identity crisis, suicidal tendencies - but have another drink, what are
friends for?


Are "gay" people really so happy? Or just putting on
a front? Beneath the smiling faces, love and laughter, you'll too often
find broken hearts and lost dreams. And although the clubs are usually
full, there are too many empty individuals who are lonely and aching
inside; but the show must go on, drinking and dancing, until another
burnt-out dawn....


One-Night Stands


And what are
one-night stands, really? Other than quick sex with "no strings
attached," it's a cheap counterfeit of what we're actually looking for:
true love, undivided attention, special affection, and sincere
compliments. We're starved for love and yet dying from "fast-food."
What we're really hungry for is some "good ol' home-cookin'!" But once
you've lost your looks (if you ever had any), you won't have to worry
about any more "strangers in the night" - unless you're able and
willing to pay them for their time and trouble.


The bar-scene
brazenly worships at the altar of youth, and devotes itself to the
beauty that's only skin-deep. Everyone else is thrown on the human
heap, scrapped and abandoned. Of course, there's some "hope" for these
discarded lives: they can join the lonely hearts club of dashed hopes
and lowered standards. The only requirement is to be desperate and
dateless. If I've overstated this case, it's only to emphasize the
point that sex sells - and without your youth and/or looks you're flat
broke. It's twisted values, but reflective of our troubled times.


Happy and in Love?


Many
gays will protest that God is a "God of love," and they think that as
long as we're happy and in love - how could something so right be so
wrong? They feel God couldn't condemn such relationships and wonder how
anyone could think He would. But mortal thoughts and opinions aside
(Prov. 14:12; Isa. 55:8), if there is a Creator God, and if the Bible
is His Instruction Manual for mankind, we'd better base our beliefs
solely on what's revealed within its pages. Faith must have a
foundation (Rom. 10:17).


If the homosexual argument that "as long
as we're happy and in love" is valid, couldn't the same defense be made
to sanction incestuous relationships? Or premarital experiences or
adulterous affairs? Do we always know what's best for us? Couldn't we
be like grown-up teenagers who think they know everything, when in
reality they don't?


Hasn't it been said, and true at times, that
"love is blind?" Is it just a matter of feeling happy? Can't feelings
fool us sometimes? Isn't that why family and friends have cautioned us
to "keep your head above your heart?" Is all love proper? Are all
affections good and healthy? What about being "lovesick?" Shouldn't
there be some form of standards to judge by or criteria for character?
Isn't there any game plan? Hasn't love too often been confused with
lust (2 Sam. 13:15)?


Satan is "love!"


If we look
into the Bible (not Freud, the latest sexual survey, or some kinky
report), we'll find that it does condemn: the love of vanity (Ps. 4:2),
of simplicity (Prov. 1:22), of excessive sleep (Prov. 20:13), of
religious lies like Christmas
and Easter (2
Thes. 2:10), illicit sex, improper lovers, and
"foreign affairs" (Ezek. 23:11, 17, 22; 16:37), of evil (Micah 3:2),
drunkenness (Hos. 3:1), self-righteousness (Mat. 6:5; 23:6), of money
(1 Tim. 6:10), this present world system and its ways (1 John 2:15),
spiritual darkness (John 3:19), the kick-back of wrongdoing (2 Pet.
2:15), of ourselves in an unhealthy way and of cheap thrills (2
Tim.3:2,4), violence (Ps. 11:5), strife (Prov. 17:19), and even having
a greater love for family or friends than for God (Mat. 10:37).


Therefore,
the Bible clearly reveals that various forms of love and feelings are
wrong, that certain human relationships are forbidden and condemned
(Lev. 18), and that true love must be consistent with God's character
and commandments (1 John 5:3). Any other "love" isn't from God, but
from Satan who is (such) "love!" He's the clever counterfeit; the snake
who confuses the issues and twists the truth. It's precisely because
God is Love (1 John 4:8) that He wants to protect us from those
Canaanite customs, perverted practices, and harmful ways that would
ultimately undermine our land and lives (Lev. 18:30).


Still, some
would angrily question how anyone could allow some old-fashioned Book
to dictate their lives; after all, it's thousands of years old! But who
would argue that the time-honored commandments against murder, or
prohibition that protects private property or safeguards marriage and
minds, or upholds honesty and virtue and being content are outdated?
They're tried, tested, and true. Naturally, it's easier to accept
something as long as it doesn't hit home or step on our toes. It's
still typical, "A man (or woman) convinced against his will is of the
same opinion still." Don't waste your time confusing them with the
facts (Mat. 7:6; 15:14).


This booklet's intention is to make the
plain truth about homosexuality known and available. It's to assist
those who really want to consider what the Good Book has to say.
Obviously, this is a very sensitive subject. If someone does become
convinced or converted to the truth - great!


More power to them.
But if others choose to continue in their contrary lifestyles, dying
for sex rather than living for God and His Kingdom
- that's their
choice. God gives us all the prerogative to do as we please, but He
strongly recommends and encourages us to "choose life" (Deut. 30:10);
an even more appropriate message considering the high risk of AIDS.
It is so
difficult to TRANSCEND HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS - but we must, if
and whenever it's necessary (Mark 10:28-30).


Living Responsible
Lives


Is
the first "gay" decade of 2000 fulfilling prophecy? The "last days"
are supposed to be reminiscent of earlier times, "as it was in the days
of Noah," and "as it was in the days of Lot." How was it in days of
yore? Just like today. Apparently, ignoring the dire need to make
drastic changes in their lives, they conducted "business as usual" and
fiddled about or got carried away with less important things (Deut.
32:47; Mark 4:19). It's recorded that they ate and drank, got married,
and went to work everyday - until they were consumed by their burning
desires and swept away by their sins (Luke 17:26-30).


What's
wrong with eating and drinking or working? We might very well wonder.
Didn't God create us with an appetite and a thirst, as well as a need
for physical exertion? Yes, but certain tastes, desires and
relationships should be nipped in the bud; not allowed to grow or
develop or take root (Jas. 1:14-15)! Many things are good of and by
themselves, and not wrong, but God's imposed conditions, restraints and
guidelines for us to live by.


We're meant to enjoy those foods
that God has blessed and offered us, according to biblical
dietary laws
and Peter's
vision
that confirms them (Lev. 20:25; 1 Tim. 4:5), and even
have an occasional drink, if we want. The Bible condemns gluttony, not
eating; drunkenness, not drinking; greed, not need. It's what we do
with what we're given. And we are instructed to work and be productive,
but we're also commanded to remember the Sabbath
(seventh day) to keep it holy. It's counterproductive to become too
busy earning a living, that we neglect learning how to live (2 Pet.
3:18).


Although we're at liberty to do almost anything, within
reason (Gen. 2:16-17), we're to remember that we're held responsible
for how we handle ourselves and manage our new-found freedoms (Gal.
5:13). We're not to abuse our privileges (1 Cor. 8:9), but be careful
not to get caught up in things that could too easily get out of control
(2 Pet. 2:20). A night of good, clean fun can quickly degenerate into
an atmosphere of "just like the old times." We're entitled to time-out
with the boys (or girls), just don't let your diversion become an
obsession (1 Cor. 6:12) - as my mother once warned me!


Keep Your Head Above
Your Heart!


Is
it - as some would charge - being cold and cruel, even inhuman, to be
in control of your mind and emotions? Isn't it rather mature to
exercise proper self-control, sick and tired of giving in to
compulsion? Isn't it judicious to carefully cross-examine every
thought, thereby destroying the defense of our death sentence,
commuting it in Christ (2 Cor. 1:9; 10:4-5; 1 Cor. 11:31)?


Doing
what just comes natural or seems normal might excite Nietzsche; but
it's not good enough for God. God wants us - mere mortals made out of
matter - to come to resemble, think and act like Him. "Like Father,
like Son." Why? Is God on some big ego-trip and wants a bunch of clones
to come along for the joy-ride? No, but because it's the only way
that'll work. He ought to know the secret for living happily ever after.


Mankind,
after all, was created in the image of the Godkind, and shares the
awesome potential to become composed of God's Spirit - after we've
developed His characteristics (1 Cor. 15:53). God's eager to award us
all the Diploma of Divinity after we've finished the course of
conversion (2 Cor. 3:18) when we're born again at the resurrection
as God-Beings.



  
Therefore, instead of just doing what
comes
natural - we're to do the supernatural! As Christian individuals, we're
to turn the other cheek instead of busting their jaw; forgive rather
than fume; pray for our enemies rather than immediately swear revenge.
We're
continually called to be different - in contrast, not conformity, to
this world (Rom. 8:29).


Tough-Love


There is a time
and a place for "tough-love." We're not to show the "mercy of fools"
for welfare frauds or lazy bums (2 Thes. 3:10), or have compassion on
cold-blooded murderers or hardened criminals, despite their many
appeals (1 Sam. 15:32-33; Rom. 13:4).


We shouldn't refuse to use
corporal punishment (Prov. 13:24). It might hurt for awhile, but
hopefully the lesson (that actions have consequences) will last a
lifetime (Prov. 19:18; 23:13; 29:15). It could keep them out of worse
trouble later (Ecc. 8:11).


We're also not to allow our emotions
for loved ones to lead us to Hell
(Deut. 7:3-4; 13:6-9), or wrong
relationships to get in our way. Despite the grief of saying goodbye,
and the pain of tearful separation (2 Sam. 3:14-16; Ezra 10:3), you've
got to do what you've got to do. Why make it any more difficult? Don't
procrastinate and prolong your misery. Get it over with and get on with
your life! We don't have time to waste in no-win situations (Ephes.
5:16).


We shouldn't try and be more understanding and tolerant
than God, but refuse to even associate with a Church member who's
living in sin without any apology or shame (1 Cor. 5:1-2, 9-13). And we
should NEVER entertain any notions about ordaining such people!


Of
course, we shouldn't cop a self-righteous attitude (Gal. 6:1), but
realize the prayerful purpose is to help restore everyone to their
senses (knowing that ongoing sin results in an eternal separation). If
and whenever such a person "comes to" (Luke 15:17, 20), he's to be
welcomed back with wide-open arms (2 Cor. 2:6-8). A little
love can go a long way
(as Mama
Evans

used to say), and encourage us to do even better - rather than give up.
But sometimes the situation calls for "shock-treatment" (tough-love),
as well as private counseling. "Different strokes for different folks,"
so to speak (Luke 12:47-48).


The moral of this story? Don't get blinded
by the light: the glitter of "love," the hot-flash of emotion, and the
gleam of relationships (2 Cor. 11:14). The going price for fool's gold
is too high to pay. Walk away. It's not worth it.

Homosexuality.... Is it a matter of choice? Are some
born that way? And if so, then how could God condemn it? Or does He?
Does it make a difference? Who offered it as an "alternative
lifestyle?" Are same-sex drives due to conditioning? Are gays and
lesbians a quirk of nature? Something queer to jeer? Would it have been
better to have never been born? All of these questions and more are
only a few of the many that race through people's minds; causing
controversy, heated arguments and emotional wounds, as words fly back
and forth carelessly.


It could be safe to say that homosexuality
is the result of many factors. But who's to blame? Must we even lay a
guilt-trap at anyone's door? Maybe mother, then again there's the
father who didn't figure for too much. Society? Genes? The stars? Most
people know their sexual orientation by their teens. They don't just
suddenly discover they're "straight" and "come out" about it. Let's get
real.


Who's to accept the responsibility for our actions? Some
have felt "gay" ever since they were very young and therefore imagine
that they were born gay. Others seem to pick up, adopt or assimilate
homosexual tendencies through association. They must have already had
an inclination towards it. It rubbed off on them. Then there are those
who were bored and needed a change. They wanted to try it and see if
they liked it.


Sometimes, due to "force" of circumstances, men in
prison, boy's homes and/or monasteries, might resort to homosexual
activities. Later, as soon as possible, some of them revert to
heterosexual ways, while others continue to enjoy the "best of both
world" as a bisexual. 


Are "bestiality is best" fans born that way? Or
are incestuous relationships something innate? Do we have a
predisposition chemically for incest? Are we set up for such a fall
from birth? Would that justify or excuse us? Is promiscuity merely a
part of man's "animal instincts?" Is the challenge of the chase a
primeval hang-over from the "days of the hunt?" 


Actually, ALL of the
above are simply DISTRACTIONS! It's not a question of who or what we're
most comfortable with, prefer, like or are attracted to; those are only
attempts to sidestep the real issue.


God isn't only the Creator,
but the Sustainer of the entire universe. As such, his Majesty's
Government - headquartered in the highest heaven - has issued (at Mt.
Sinai) various health rules and regulations (Malachi 4:4); The
Creator-King has predetermined, in His infinite wisdom, which "food and
drugs" are safe and sound for our consumption.


If we keep
uppermost in mind the reason for our mortal existence, the SUPREME
PURPOSE for our human being; to establish contact with our
Superior-Being and develop a relationship with Him and ultimately be born again
divine - then we'll know
and understand that everything God does is for our benefit.


God wants
to help us, not hinder us. He enjoys encouraging us to attain our goals
and fulfill our potential (Luke 12:31-32). Father does know what's
best: what He has in store for us is beyond our wildest dreams (Ephes.
3:20; 1 Cor. 2:9).


The High Cost of Living


Whoever
chooses to be a card-carrying member of the homosexual community is
entitled to all of it's privileges and persecutions; but you should
first COUNT THE COST to see if it's too high of a price for you to pay,
like Christians are told to do (Luke 14:28).


If anyone decides to
engage in illicit sex or become entangled in "foreign affairs," they're
living a lie if they think that God could possibly approve of their
improper conduct, and they're compounding their problems if they lead
others astray by attempts to endorse such flagrant sin (Rom.
1:32). 


Do
what you want, but don't misrepresent God and His clear-cut Biblical
teachings. Don't try and put words in His mouth or censor what He's
actually said (Rev. 22:18-19).


Yes, GOD IS LOVE! That's why
He hates certain practices with a passion. He frowns upon a dishonest
life of stealing, an unfaithful habit of "cheating" on our spouse, a
disrespectful attitude towards our parents or persons in authority,
religious holidays (like Christmas
and Easter)
that are hollow and don't hallow His name, senseless
killings and character assassination, idolatrous distractions that come
between God and us, an endless trivial pursuit and preoccupation with
ourselves and others, instead of putting God first. 


God loves us and
wants us to love Him too, but He considers love more than a four-letter
word: love is an attitude exemplified by actions, words that are backed
up with deeds (Jas. 2:26). That's why Jesus said that if we really
loved Him, we'd show it and not just say it (John 14:15).


Safe-Sex


Since
God is love, and Father knows best, He wants us to practice safe-sex. A
safe-sex that's good and wholesome, clean and pure, and only available
within a marriage where both partners keep their vows and honor their
commitments (Heb. 13:4).


Sexual intimacy, cuddling and coitus, belongs
in the bedroom (of the biblically-bonded), and it's to involve the
union of both minds and bodies (Gen. 2:24). Married couples are
challenged to become compatible in every sense of the word. A marriage
certificate doesn't have to be "just a piece of paper" or become
another broken record! God does recognize the fact that marriage isn't
for everyone (Matt. 19:11), and it's clearly only for heterosexuals
(Matt. 19:4-6) but expresses His will that singles remain
celibate (1 Thes. 4:3).


God only promises to bless those foods
(or relationships) that are sanctioned by His Word (1 Tim. 4:4-5). He's
not unsure of Himself or His ways, He's not fickle or foolish, and His
Word is reliable, dependable, and not subject to change. This hasn't
caused the scriptures to be too popular at times, but they refuse to
succumb to peer pressure and remain true to themselves. They're not
what needs to change anyway. We do. God hasn't lowered His moral
standards or compromised with His food laws, but offers to help raise
us to His God-Plane. Christ can cleanse us of our unclean lives (Acts
10:15, 28), because God hasn't called us to remain in Egypt but to head
for the Promised Land. Don't just stand there, get a move on it! And
leave your excess baggage (sin) behind.


Kosher Food


Although
God created us with a hunger drive, an appetite, He doesn't want us to
become gluttonous pigs.  Neither does He want us to act like
horny dogs
(1 Cor. 6:13). God's also shown us that just because various food items
have been mislabeled "delicacies," we don't have to shove them into our
mouths (Lev. 11, Deut. 14). And for the record, Jesus
upheld the biblical dietary laws
, as did the apostles for
Jews, Israelites and Gentiles.


We're expected to be mature, not act childish. God
warns us to guard the doors of our mind, don't set ourselves up for a
fall, and discern what we digest (Ephes. 4:27; Heb. 5:14). We're
instructed to scrutinize our food for thought and remember "we are what
we eat" and "we become what we think" (Prov. 23:7). God doesn't only
want us to watch what we put into our mouths, but what we allow into
our minds (Philip. 4:8).

We're
not supposed to remain raw material. God's given us a brain to become
refined and keep our baser "instincts" in line (2 Pet. 2:12). The Holy
Spirit offers us the help we need to accomplish this job (John 1:12).
We should refuse to be reduced to an animal level, simply sensual
creatures, choosing a higher standard of living instead. The "if it
feels good do it" and "if it looks good eat it" lack of mentality ought
to be regarded as an insult to those striving for God's higher
intelligence.


Regardless of why you're gay, bisexual or
"trysexual" (you'll try anything once), whether or not you've had any
choice in the matter - you do have a choice to exercise proper
self-control. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A SLAVE TO YOUR SENSES (John 8:34),
or allow sexual temptations to dictate mindless reactions (Gen.
19:4-11).


You're not forced to act upon every thought that enters
your
mind. You can resist suggestions and reject impulses (2 Cor. 10:5).
Every fleeting thought, random idea or stray notion doesn't have to
take root and grow if you don't give it fertile ground (Jas. 1:13-15).
You can consider its source and nip it in the bud. A "NO TRESPASSING!"
frame of mind can be developed to defend you against intruders.
Protection is possible. You can say NO! You can curb your appetite! YOU
CAN CHANGE!

I’m reading a book that a friend of mine gave me entitled Forever His by Marvin Moore. This book is all about the practical application of Romans and teaches us how to have a joyful and unbroken relationship with Jesus Christ. In the second chapter, Mr. Moore describes something that I’ve been feeling for some time. He writes:

Any misunderstanding we have of God will damage our relationship with him. The first commandment says, you shall have no other gods before me. Some false gods consist of images of wood or stone; the problem with these gods isn’t merely that they are made out of stuff that can be seen and touched. The root problem is that they create a false picture of the true God in the minds of their worshipers. Actually, any misconception of God that we hold is a false god.

It’s been nearly 10 years now since I’ve begun my God quest. I was sick and tired of playing the Christian game and I wanted once and for all to learn who the true God of the Bible is. One thing you will learn very quickly if you ever start a God quest is that it’s very easy to make a God in your own image. I learned that I had God in a box and he very quickly tore that box to shreds as he showed me that nothing could contain him. You see, every misrepresentation that you believe about God not only makes a false idol, but also has a corresponding consequence. I believe it was Andy Stanley that said, “If you believe God will heal every illness here on earth, you will be disappointed with the God you have created.”

What kind of false god are you holding on to? It might be time for you to examine the God you serve to make sure you have the one true God.

The forgotten scourge

What a mixed up age we live in today. Abnormal behavior is promoted as “normal” by special interest groups who aggressively press forward their agenda with public demonstrations, litigation, and organized pressure to accept what was, for millennia, considered taboo in society.

There seems to be an insatiable appetite for aberrant sexual behavior.  For most of mankind’s history, such perversion was practiced secretly, avoiding attention and public scrutiny. Now, it is openly portrayed as normal behavior in entertainment, on the stage, in movies, in books (even textbooks) and magazines

By taking the tack that their so-called “sexual orientation” is a civil right, they have been successful in getting laws against sodomy and other sexual perversions repealed or ignored.  The courts of the land are full of cases testing the sanctity of marriage as being between a man and a woman.

In all this publicity and social pressure to accept such behavior, something very important is left out of the discussion.  It is seldom, if ever, mentioned by the mainstream press in any of the extensive coverage given to the subject.  What am I referring to?  The scourge of AIDS, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, caused by the HIV virus; a debilitating, fatal disease that burst onto the world scene a generation ago. The first case seems to have been identified in 1959. Within a few years, the fatal disease was rampant in many parts of the world.

Where did it come from? Scientists think it spread to humans from primates such as monkeys or chimpanzees.  Once the virus was in the human population, it was spread primarily by sexual activity among homosexual men.  As the disease spread to epidemic proportions, it got into the blood supply and, tragically many people were infected from the tainted blood. Then unrestrained, unprotected heterosexual activity in many parts of the world, especially Africa, infected millions of people.

An official of the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA, which carefully monitors the health of the USA, stated at the HIV Prevention Conference in August of 2009, “…that in the United States AIDS is fifty times more prevalent among men who have sex with men than the rest of the population.” FIFTY TIMES more prevalent!  And yet, you do not hear anything about this alarming fact in any news media in the context of homosexual activity. Oh, but many will say, “There are treatments for the disease today, so it is no longer a threat.” Do your homework and you will find that while there are cocktails of powerful drugs to control the symptoms of AIDS, there is no cure and the side effects of the drugs are often horrendous.

The Apostle Paul addressed the subject of homosexual activity in his letter to the Church of God in Rome in about 57AD. He wrote, “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due” (Romans1:26-27). The cosmopolitan city of Rome obviously had this kind of behavior going on, and Paul exposed it as shameful and ungodly.

This condemnation of the sinful behavior did not mean that Paul hated the sinners, nor should we. Quite the contrary, Paul also wrote to the Church at Corinth acknowledging that some of them had been engaged in that lifestyle before their conversion to Christianity. “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11). It is obvious that with God’s help, homosexuals and other promiscuous persons can change and become repentant, forgiven Christians.

While society in the main seems to have forgotten the scourge of AIDS, it is still extant; causing misery, suffering and eventually untimely death for many who have ignored the facts that are available to all.

Sure, the military’s been uncomfortable with troops posting their wartime videos to YouTube, for all to see. Who knows what classified — or embarrassing — information could be viewable worldwide? Quick solution: Create a YouTube visible only behind Defense Department firewalls.

That’s MilTube, the brainchild of a Maryland-based Army communications office that’s basically recreating the entire world of social media into a military-only format, which launched Monday. If you’ve got a Common Access Card — that golden ticket behind the military firewall — you can view MilTube.

Its creator is quick to point out that it shouldn’t be seen as a YouTube competitor, even within the military. “YouTube serves a purpose and this serves a purpose,” says Justin Filler, deputy director of the Army’s MilTech Solutions Office. MilTube will cater to a “more targeted audience to communicate on official [Defense Department] business.”

That means you shouldn’t post your videos of you dropkicking your buddies or racing Humvees when you get bored. MilTube is for unclassified-but-sensitive material like “training videos [or] meetings,” Filler says. “People can highlight different conferences, different speeches that generals or others give.” In other words, users should expect a more professional and less-goofy video-sharing and viewing experience.

MilTube is the latest addition to a two-year old series of military-only knockoffs of social-media tools like MilBook, MilWiki and MilBlog that Filler and his colleagues have created. Known as MilSuite, it’s about “secure communities of practice,” using online tools that servicemembers enjoy using in their unofficial capacities or “working on at home,” he says, in order to discuss work-related issues and pool information. (No word on whether MilTweet is in the works, though.)

The Army’s currently worrying about how to keep its communications tools current for a generation of soldiers that grew up online. MilSuite, which claims 88,500 members, is one option. It’s also a solution to the military’s constant exhortation that troops shouldn’t talk about work through open social media. While a WikiLeaks-style security breach is “always a possibility,” Filler isn’t concerned about MilTube’s privacy-protections: “We’re a credited DOD system,” complete with authentication mechanisms to keep out adversaries or curious journalists.

That means it’s also likely to avoid the panic that higher-ups have shown over social media. YouTube isn’t always viewable through military networks. Those networks have even denied access to the military-friendly TroopTube video site, due to “content and/or security issues associated with potentially malicious file extension.” By keeping it secure — and professional — MilTube shouldn’t run into those pitfalls, though it also won’t have any Keyboard Cat or Double Rainbow.

And don’t worry: MilTube’s masters won’t comb TroopTube or YouTube looking for videos that should be behind the firewall. They’ll remain the place for showing off how you ghostride an MRAP, even if your commanding officer would really rather you didn’t.

Take a picture, go to jail.

It may seem absurd, but since 2005 that scenario or something like it was playing out with surprising regularity on public streets in Britain, where draconian anti-terror legislation declared photographers “suspicious” merely for carrying camera equipment.

At its height, a tweed-wearing photographer was branded a terrorist by a London Tube worker, police deleted a young Austrian tourist’s photos “to prevent terrorism,” an Italian student was arrested for filming in London’s financial district, and an architectural historian was detained for photographing a building designed by his grandfather.

Now, the tide is turning. The suspicious-photo law was suspended this summer, and September saw the release of Street Photography Now, an anthology of famous and not-so-famous works by street photographers from across the globe, aimed at highlighting the substantial artistic merits of the form.

The Prevention of Terrorism Act passed into British law in 2000. Section 44 established the authority of police officers to stop and search members of the public. In 2005, the law was revised to declare carrying photography equipment suspicious behavior.

The tension reached a tipping point in 2008, when London’s Metropolitan police launched a poster campaign singling out the act of photography as suspicious — a tactic since repeated by the TSA in the United States. The photo community rallied, organizing campaigns such as I’m a Photographer, Not a Terrorist, and educating one another on their rights through bodies such as the National Union of Journalists’ London Photographers Branch. Photographers also used flash-mob tactics in acts of civil disobedience in Trafalgar Square and at Scotland Yard, London police headquarters.

Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner John Yates issued a reminder in December 2009 that no laws prevent people from photographing buildings. By January 2010, the stop-and-search powers granted under Section 44 were ruled illegal by the European Court of Human Rights. Section 44 was finally suspended this summer. British lawmakers are now rewriting it.

A photographer’s experience on the streets of Britain is better now than it was one or two years ago, but issues remain. The website I Am a Photographer, Not a Terrorist reported following the suspension of Section 44:

Unfortunately there are still a swathe of laws that police can and will still use to harass photographers, most notably Section 43, which is similar to Section 44 but requires an officer to suspect that you are a terrorist, and Section 76 which makes it illegal to ‘elicit information about a police officer’ which includes photographing them.

“For a while in the U.K. we started to get into a debate about ’security’ which took attention away from the really good work that was being produced by street photographers,” says Street Photography Now co-author Steve McLaren. ”Now that the book is out there I’m hopeful that the conversation will resort back to the images themselves and why they might be interesting records of our time.”

Along with the book, McLaren has launched a year-long weekly-assignment Street Photography Flickr project, where aspiring street photographers can contribute their work.
